Someone from here recommended The Banshees of Inisherin an Irish movie that just premiered on HBO. It has been nominated for a whole bunch of awards. I fell asleep during it three times, but to be fair it was 3 am when I was trying to watch it. Today, I watched the whole thing through. IDGI. I went on Google to figure out what I was supposed to take from it. First of all, it is referred to as a dark comedy. Have I lost my entire sense of humor? This movie starts out kind of normal. Then, it gets creepier by the minute. I just finished watching it and I am in a dark place. Apparently, we were supposed to get that it was an allegory for the Irish civil war. That apparently didn’t end well for anyone either.
I usually like an artsy fartsy movie but this one left me skeeved out. Did anyone else watch it? Did you laugh even one time while watching? There were deaths and a suicide and self-mutilation. Does that sound funny?
I’m hoping, but not hopeful that some of y’all watched this. Am I missing something? I’m almost afraid to ask. But has anyone watched anything good on HBO or Showtime lately?
I’ve been seeing the adverts for “George and Tammy” on Showtime. It’s a biopic of George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s relationship(s). I haven’t watched yet, but planning to. I believe it’s a limited series. I love biopics, historical dramas, and period pieces. I’d be perfectly happy only watching those things- even war movies and political dramas. That’s my jam. But I do stop by here at last weekly to see what’s up in the reality genre, as I used to be a Bravo addict.
On a personal note, I’m hoping for you to start felling better. You’re in my thoughts. It’s scary when we start falling apart and especially when it’s a mystery requiring so many visits and tests. I’m an RN of 26 years in Intensive Care, Coronary Care, and Cardiovascular ICU. I’m at my best when caring for sick people, but I am very uncomfortable being the patient. It’s the ceding of control I think. So I can relate to some of your experiences lately. Do get better. I’m pulling for you.
Jeez…please pardon all the autocorrect misspellings.
I watched it on Saturday and LOVED it! Maybe it’s the Irish in me? My father was from Mayo, not too far from one of the islands where it was filmed. Mom was from the North. I’ve heard stories…Yes, it’s dark at times but I laughed my ass off at times. I found it genuinely funny. I thought Colin Farrell did a phenomenal job playing a bit of a half wit who doesn’t know that he’s one. Brendon Gleason is always amazing. Ii have told so many people to watch it. I hope they don’t hate me, lol.
I loved it too!
I agree wholeheartedly! My paternal roots are in County Mayo, Clare Island, and it must only be the Irish who will enjoy this film.
All the actors were incredible, especially the young man who played Dominic. And Colin Farrell of course. Hopefully he will win that Oscar this year.
We watched the Christmas Story Christmas update on HBO. It was very sweet and poignant. Lots of Easter eggs to the original so watch the credits to make sure you caught them all!
I loved the series “Gentleman Jack” based on a true story. And I also loved “Hacks” and “Julia”. Not new but enjoyable if you haven’t watched them.
I went to the movie theater to see it. They advertised it as a dark comedy. If that was a dark comedy, I can’t fathom what a drama would be considered. By the end of the movie, I was mentally drained. It felt like all the joy had been sucked out of me and all I wanted to do was go home and cuddle with my dog. That being said, I thought the acting was great and the scenery made me want to hop on a plane and visit Ireland again.
I had high hopes for this film. I watched it and had no idea it was a comedy. I was depressed by the end of it and told my husband not to watch it. It was well made and the acting was great but talk about a downer!!!
I agree Barbara R! How the heck was that a comedy? TT we watched Fisherman’s Friends on Prime. It’s based on a true story of English fishermen that form a singing group and are discovered by a talent agent. It was cute and light. Not like the depressing Banshee!
Yes I mentioned it as a movie I wanted to see as I had heard good things! I’ve taped it but haven’t watched yet.
I’ve watched the first 3 episodes of george and Tammy on showtime and it’s pretty good. Diagnosed with covid today so will veg out on the couch watching TV the next few days. Worst part so far is the never ending cough
I’m so sorry you are sick Lisa. It sucks to be sick around the holidays. Do you have to quarantine from family? 🙁
We, ‘feckin’ loved the Banshees of Inisherin! Colin Farrell touchingly portrayed an animal lover and now absolutely must have a miniature donkey! The entire B.I. was so well cast. Viewed the film in a retro-movie theater in Denver before the General Election, had thee best popcorn and atmosphere to enjoy the film with other like-minded folks. I have hardly been to a movie theater since the pandemic, it was such an enjoyable outing for us!
I do not want anything dark after the Britney Spears stuff. Perez Hilton made an ominous video about her this weekend and that’s all TikTok wants to show me now. All of these conspiracy videos and I was up all night so disturbed. I hope she’s okay. Otherwise I’ve been sad and just look for light things to watch. Cooking competitions I haven’t already watched. Making The Cut with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, which I really enjoyed. Covid kind of took away the spark of the first season, but I still liked it and am looking forward to a new season.
Happy Holidays everyone!
What channel is Making the Cut on?
It’s on Amazon Prime if you have streaming. They traveled around the globe for the first season, which really added to the show. The second and third seasons were still good, but had to stay in LA. I hope they can go back to traveling next season. It’s actually really good.
I just watched it this weekend. I was actually enjoying it until fingers started being cut off…at one point I was like yelling at the screen begging Colin Farrell’s character to stop talking to him. Then when it ended I was mourning the two hours of my life that had just passed. I know it’s getting all these kinds of awards but I guess I’m not fancy enough to understand why or whatever humor there was in the movie…
I enjoyed the documentary Miss Cleo Call Me Now on Hbo. Remember all those info mercials during the 80’s ? Interesting woman & a really informative piece of nostalgia. Real Housewives of Miami on Peacock is also must see television. This reboot is everything !
I fell asleep both times I attempted to watch the Banshees. I may try again…who knows. I did enjoy The Amazing Attorney Woo (Netflix) and 1923 (the Yellowstone spinoff) starring Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford and Jerome Flynn (Bronn in GoTs).
OH!!! I also enjoyed the HBO documentary Pelosi in the House.
I saw Banshees Saturday. I was really looking forward to it. I am still reeling from it – way too dark for me! The acting was great; loved the scenery. The story just didn’t make sense. I love all types of films (especially quirky ones) and this one will haunt me & not in a good way. My husband was out after the first “cut”.
We did watch a new Christmas movie last night for our movie night – Spirited w Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds on Apple. Their take on A Christmas Carol. Cute! It’s a musical so hubby was grimacing…. 🤷🏻♀️
And while we are on movies – what is everyone fave Christmas movie(s)???
Our family loves Four Christmases – I always watch A Christmas Story – fun fact the house is less than a mile from me! I always watch White Christmas – just love that movie!!
Thanks for the head’s up everyone, now I know what movie I won’t be seeing. I love Colin but hated his other movie “After Yang”.
I loved it- thought it was hilarious. This is the second super-weird movie I’ve seen with Colin Farrell, the first being “The Lobster,” and I think he should exclusively do only strange films from now on.
I have Showtime, for some reason. They won’t let you just cancel it like the old days, you drop down a “tier” and lose other stuff too. WTF?
After getting burned by The Affair, and the one that had Kirsten Dunst in it about a cult in FL,and that one about the comedians in LA, I kind of lost interest in investing in these series. It’s like they can make one good season, maybe two, and then it sucks. Didn’t even try White Lotus for that very reason. George and Tammy..meh. Maybe I just already know the story too well.
I tried that Everything Everywhere movie and..no. Just no. I’m too old for it, I guess. I find myself rewatching stuff more and more. New stuff just isn’t landing for me, unless I’ve missed something stellar and just don’t know. That Banshee movie sounds like too much of a downer to me. And I don’t give a damn about superhero movies. So, yeah. Reruns and old movies. I watched The Apartment (Jack Lemmon and Shirley Mcclain) on TCM last night. Great movie.
“Wednesday” is classified as these genres:
supernatural
mystery
comedy
horror
I saw no comedy. What did I miss?
I really liked Banshees. As another commenter said, maybe it’s the Irish in me. It made me giggle in several place. Went back to Ireland for 2 weeks last summer, had planned it for 2020 but we all know how that turned out. Such a beautiful country. Highly recommend it.
I laughed out loud when the guy at the pub, after hearing Brendon Gleeson’s plan about his fingers, said ‘should we give it a go just to see if he’s serious?’
I too now want a miniature donkey.
Just checking in. Watched X? and Marge Go Large. It’s mindless, not going to win any awards, but it won’t skeeve you out like Banshees either. I still can’t erase all of that from my brain.
Just didn’t want anyone sending the fuzz to my house for not posting. I’m just not feeling well.
Tamara, I never hear anyone but me say “the fuzz” anymore, so thank you for that laugh!😹 I hope you are able to get some rest tonight.
I thought it was the worst movie I’ve ever seen! I’ll never get those 2 hours back.
I was also out after the first cut in the Banshee movie. So dark. I read the plot on the internet so as not to have to go through it. I need sunnier movies! LOVED beyond all imagination Everything Everywhere All at Once & I hope Michelle Yeoh and the cast and movie win ALL of the awards. I have ALWAYS wanted a movie to portray fighting people with kindness and compassion and this one finally did for funny & amazing results. Trying to find other awards nominees on streaming if anyone knows where to find more? Thanks! I’m w you, Tamara on Banshees & hope you feel better, too. XO
I watched this and loved it, but it was so fuckinf sad most of the time. There were some parts I laughed out loud, but mainly this made me think about depression, loneliness, and life in general. I can see how they meant for this to be an allegory for the irish civil war, but it seems like they really stretched to make it so.
I loved the gilded age on HBO and White Lotus of course. I rewatched Insecure and I loooove that show. It was even funnier the second time
around.
Watched it and I concur it was awful. Dark comedy? Nope. A couple of semi funny lines and the allegory was a fail. Overall it was awful and entirely too long for a bad movie.
I also watched the Pelosi documentary. While I’ve not agreed with her on everything over the years, I respect the hell out of her. She definitely had TFG pegged early on. The doc was by her daughter and it was a good watch, especially given the timing of her stepping down. Still appalled by what happened to Paul. It on HBO.
We should have a movie thread since so many shows are on hiatus for holidays. For some reason Netflix had an older movie called Prisoners (2013? 2017?) trending. I watched it and it was good. Recommend to my kids and was informed that I already had watched it with them years ago! I swear, I have consumed so much content, my brain just discards it immediately to make room for more. The alternative is that I have dementia so I’m going with over consumption, lol.
Just watched it last night and concur, def not worth the hype. I did love the Irish countryside.
