The cast for the new iteration of RHONY with younger, fresh faces was announced at Bravocon over the weekend. Most of us have no idea who they are, but Brian Moylan over at Vulture has the tea. I would link you, but I do not subscribe to Vulture, as much as I love it I am over subscribing to any more things. However, I do get their weekly newsletter and Brian was kind enough to break it down for us there. Here is what he said.
Guys. Guys guys guys guys. Jenna Lyons is going to be a Real Housewife of New York.
I don’t know if it has fully registered with everyone that the super-chic, lesbian former design head of J.Crew (and the host of the not-entirely-successful reality show Stylish with Jenna Lyons) is one of the new Real Housewives of New York. This is exactly what we were looking for when the fans sent Andy Cohen and the Bravo execs back to the drawing board to get us a cast of chic, aspirational, and diverse Housewives to represent the most chic, aspirational, and diverse city in America.
As a certain president and founder of a certain Real Housewives Institute predicted, the biggest announcement at BravoCon was the new RHONY cast, and, contrary to all the gossip-blog leaks leading up to the announcement, not a single person called Jenna Freakin’ Lyons. I am a little sad that “Page Six”’s No. 1 guess, Lizzy Savetsky, who just recently moved to the city, is a member of the cast. All due respect to the Eileen Davidson Accord, but I hate her thirst already.
They are joined by Jessel Taank, the founder of fashion-and-beauty PR company the Know (current Instagram follower count: 14), who will be the first Indian Housewife across all franchises. (Which reminds me, not enough of you are watching Family Karma.) Sai De Silva, an Afro-Latina content creator also in the fashion space, and Ubah Hassan, a Canadian former model and current hot-sauce-trepreneur, will also help give the first season of the new RHONY more melanin than we’ve seen in every season of the first iteration combined. Erin Dana Lichy, a New York real-estate agent, bucks the fashion-centered trend, as does Brynn Whitfield, another PR-and-marketing maven whose client list might not include a runway show among them.
Brian is certainly not alone in being excited for Jenna Lyons, lots of people are very excited, one new housewife is already the reason for swirling controversy around the show. Particularly, because Ramona’s perceived racist behavior against Eboni was the downfall of the old regime. That sent the suits spinning to finally give us a more diverse cast and it seems they have done just that!
That Problem is Elizabeth “Lizzy” Savetsky. She fancies herself an influencer on social media but at first glance I do not see any endorsements. What I do see in her bio is the words, “PROUD ZIONIST.” That is problematic. If you are not familiar with the Palestinian situation (and if you follow me on Twitter you should be) #FreePalestine I am often sharing horrific acts that Israel imposes on Palestinians. Palestinians who they have displaced from their own land, but I’ll spare you the history lesson.
Lizzy posts about stopping Anti-Semitism. That’s a great cause. There is no reason for all the hatred against Jews. Well unless you are Palestinian and getting shot at and attacked on the daily. And again for those of you new to this whole situation a Proud Zionist could mean a lot of things. Zionism represents the revival of violent tendencies in Judaism now that Jews once again have a state. In religious Zionism, the endorsement of violence is due to the belief that Jews are chosen, that God promised them the land of Israel, that the messianic period is approaching, and that non-Jews are evil. Secular Zionism does not subscribe to the literal meaning of these premises, but it has translated them into nationalist ideals that have also inspired violence.
Basically, it is the violent treatment of Palestinians that we see in the news, if we are looking, every day.
Here is just one headline from today:
Nablus, occupied West Bank – On the morning of October 4, dozens of Israeli settlers raided the Huwwara Secondary Boys School, south of Nablus city in the occupied West Bank, beating staff members and students and smashing cars and class windows before retreating.
School principal Abdulhameed Shehadeh said the sense of safety and security he tried to ensure for his 350 students was shattered in the wake of the violent attack, during which one of the settlers pulled out a gun and pointed it at the teachers and students.
So for this reason, there appears to be something about Lizzy that Bravo either overlooked or didn’t seem to care about. There are A LOT of Bravo fans who are Palestinian living in the USA. And they are already boycotting the season. I’m pretty irked about it myself.
I realize this is a political hot topic and hope we can keep the comments respectful. Please try and behave, I am going back to bed.
