Once again, the Bravo website doesn’t even list the title of the show or give up any previews making a Top Chef recap more difficult. I remember when I first started this website, Bravo kept offing me gifts like pots and pans or free online cooking lessons to cover Top Chef. I wasn’t interested in either. And I was boycotting recapping over some chef I hate. I forget who it is now. LOL. Some yankee who had the audacity to come to Atlanta and open a “southern restaurant” I believe he has one in Athens, home of my alma mater UGA there too. No, siree Bob Johnson.
Ah! Media Village had some photos. YAY! Now on to the show. We get to go to the Houston farmers market. I think that should be my goal for leaving the house. In Spring/Summer/September (IWIDT?) 🙂 my town has a farmers market. I need to check to see when it starts because I can buy tomato plants there early on. It’s small but it is a pleasant hour or so in the sunshine. And there’s food! This one is huge and not exposed to the weather. I would go there if I were in the area, but I prefer mine where a short little street is shut down on the town square and everyone just walks around. It sounds like the first challenge will involve fajitas that apparently originated in Houston.
The best fajita will win $10K . They have $50 to shop and only 45 minutes to shop and make their fajita. Why is Jae making crepes instead of tortillas? Nick is the only one that seems to actually be making tortillas. WTF? This if final six! At least TRY to understand the assignment. This is Evelyn’s challenge to lose. Ashleigh is still just wandering the market aimlessly. Get it together, girl! She ran out of time. She was in the bottom with Demarr and Jae who also ran out of time. Nick won. He was the only one who made tortillas.
The Immunity Challenge
We go straight into the next challenge. Padma introduces the guest judges. First, is Marcus Samuelsson! I love him! And Melissa King. The challenge is to make food for astronauts that doesn’t make crumbs or have liquids that can spill. So the chefs all head over to the space center to meet some astronauts and learn what they eat. This is going to be a hard challenge. The trip to Mars will have astronauts in space for three years. Then they get some video from the international space station. That’s pretty cool. I would make some kind of a cheese cake with fruit of some sort.
I’m kind of rooting for Ashleigh. But, I really love the final six. Jae could go next and I’d be fine with that. Just because she doesn’t always get the assignment and just tries to make a Korean dish ever week. That said, this would be a good challenge for a Korean dish. They have a lot of latitude. At Whole Foods, Demarr has no idea what he is making. Get it together, dude! Budda is making pavlova with fruit and whipped cream. That sounds smart. Wow! His wife is a pastry chef at 11 Madison Park. Someplace I’d like to eat someday. I’m worried about Ashleigh’s tinned fish idea.
The Top Chef Kitchen Has Been Transformed Into A Space Station!
The top six all get to work making their dishes. Evelyn is making Guiso Rojo, a Mexican pork and chili stew. YUM! I just wish I could roll my r’s. I am r rolling impaired. Budda has an entire science experiment going on. Jae is make Gulgogi as a taste from home. It’s a dish with thinly sliced beef and I presume lots of yummy Korean spices. I’m hungry. Demarr is also doing a dish from home, rice with chicken gravy and chicken and chicken livers. I love fried chicken livers but no one really sells it anymore. Nick is making a Mississippi gumbo. Yes please! Ashleigh is preparing a fish dish in coconut water and using a lot of hot sauce. This also sounds good to me. BTW, I need a good recipe for grouper if anyone has one.
I love this season so much. It is a shame so few of you seem to be watching with me. Jae seems worried about her dish. Ut oh. Budda is going to win this one I think. He is even making his pavlova shaped like the golf ball that was hit on the moon. Demarr has overcooked his rice. He is in trouble! NOE! Ashleigh has her fish in a tin with the sauce in a bag. Now that is making sense.
Time To Taste The Food
The judges arrive to try the food. In addition to Marcus Samuelsson there are several astronauts there. The is also an actual moon rover and several space suits in the dining area. It’s really cool. Evelyn and her spicy stew is up first. One of the astronauts ate every drop. Budda introduces his dish as Pavolva 14. I think he should have gone into more details about Alan Shepard hitting golf balls on Apollo 14. I thought that was really creative. Perhaps it was edited out. They loved Evelyn’s presentation, but her fish was bland. She’s in trouble. Tom says Budda told a great story, so I imagine it was edited out. They loved his dish too. Ashley put scissors and a packet and an open tin on her dish. All I want is Nick’s Mississippi gumbo. YUM! Marcus LOVES the gumbo.
Jae is not happy with her dish. So Ashleigh has a chance. Demarr has overcooked his rice, TWICE! How hard is it to set a timer? He is screwed. I will miss him if he goes. LCK is AMAZING this season and the challenges are HARD! No spoilers please. I am watching but I hate spoiling others. Back to tasting. Jae barley was undercooked and he beef was very mushy. Demarr’s rice was over cooked. So, maybe Jae can go and save Demarr and Ashleigh?
Evelyn, Budda and Nick are the top three. The photo above made me think that the astronauts would decide the winner and loser but it appears at least at this point to just be a promotional pick. Any of the three of them would be worthy winners. They are all great. Budda won. They loved the tie in to Apollo 14. This is his first individual win. I am shocked by that! And now for the bad news. Ashleigh, Demarr and Jae are all in the bottom. OH WAIT VOTING FOR FAN FAVORITE HAS ALREADY STARTED! How do you even pick a favorite from this amazing cast? The top four right now are Evelyn, Damarr, Nick and Budda in that order. I don’t think I can choose just one. Maybe Nick? I don’t know!
Jae was eliminated. Thank God. I was worried for Ashleigh and Damarr. I’m off to watch Top Chef Junior an the FINALE of LCK! I think is one one of thoses blind smell tests for spices. Thanks for reading please comment and tell me who your favorite chef is. I love them all. xo~tt
