Survivor 42 Recap: Game Of Chicken

April 28, 2022 by tamaratattles 35 Comments

This Survivor 42 Recap will probably be brief. I am mentally exhausted by the RHOC Reunion recap. Thank God that season is over. And sadly Survivor gets very little love on this site and the people who do come have seen the episode. So forgive me for being a little short on the recap if that is how it works out.

We start right at the end of tribal council. Romeo is pissed because he had three votes. He tells everyone there are no hard feelings. But, he has hard feelings. Can we PUHLEASE get rid of Tori this week? Hai is also pissed because someone voted for him. Dude. Calm down. Take a page from Romeo’s book and simmer down! I like Hai and want him to stay! He seem to know it was Romeo. The Bros alliance, Hai, Rocksroy, Jonathan and Mike meet up and Hai says he wants Romeo gone next. Rocksroy complains to the camera that the bros are literally feeding everyone and that has put a target on them. Not really. These are four strong players that the rest of them need to get out ASAP. They were fools for not getting rid of Jonathan when they had the chance.

The Bros Alliance

The four bros want to bring Omar and Romeo into a full on male alliance and send home all the girls. I’m not sure that Omar and Romeo will be down with that. HOWEVER, Romeo and Omar and the four remaining girls could pick off the other four guys. And neither Omar or Romeo want to join the Bros. We go straight to the Immunity Challenge. Is there no reward this week? These people need food! It looks like another attempt to drown the remaining ten. They have to balance on a triangular platform with very little room to balance. Smaller than most of their big twos. Two people will win immunity and two people will go home! They will be divided into two teams. One person on each team gets immunity. One person on each team goes home in two different immunity challenges. The last one standing wins food for their team.

I don’t think this will be Jonathan’s challenge. The blue team is Drea, Tori, Jonathan, Maryanne and Lindsey. I think Tori could win this and they could vote Jonathan out. The orange team is Mike, Rocksroy, Omar, Romeo and Hai. So a guy is totally going home tonight. When the game starts, Maryanne falls, Rocksroy falls, Omar falls, and Mike falls in like the first five seconds. So the Orange Team is down to just Romeo and Hai. The ocean is so rough this challenge is almost over in the first minute. Romeo touches the float so he is out and Hai has immunity for team Orange. But he needs to keep fighting for food for his team. The blue team is down to Lindsey and Jonathan. Lindsey falls. Jonathan has immunity. But Jonathan and Hai still battle it out for food. Hai falls and Jonathan wins the food. Mike wants to send Romeo packing. But, my money is on Rocksroy leaving. No one gets along with him really.

Survivor 42 RecapThe Two Teams Discuss Who Needs To Go

The teams go back to different camps. That will certainly make it more interesting. The orange team is all male. Romeo is sure he is going home. But I still feel like it will be Rocksroy. He’s abrasive. Omar and Romeo want to send home Rocksroy. Hai is the swing vote. Romeo is really worried. Hai is worried that he will lose his alliance with Mike if he votes out Rocks without telling him. So he goes to talk to him. Mike thinks getting Rocks out tonight will make them look not loyal to the bros. But Hai is Mike’s number one. So we shall see.

Meanwhile over on the blue team they are munching down on the kebabs they won and deciding who needs to go. Suddenly, Jonathan is being nice to Maryanne again even though he offered her up on a silver platter a few days ago. He tells her he wants to get rid of an idol. Not hers but Drea’s. Drea has FOUR ADVANTAGES though. So I hope she uses some of them at his tribal. Jonathan says that the two of plus Lindsey can get Drea out. But then he says they are going to have Drea vote for MaryAnne. Oh HAIL to the no! I do not trust this guy. Maryanne is all the way over Jonathan now. YAY! I hope the girls team up to vote out Tori and Jonathan is the hinky vote for Maryanne.

Survivor 42 recapJonathan Is Kind Of A Dick

Then Jonathan tells Drea to vote out Maryanne and she seems to agree. It’s too bad he has immunity in this game. Then he tells Tori that the plan is for the three of them to vote out Drea. But, Tori points out that if they vote out Drea, and she plays her idol then their “alliance” would lose Maryanne’s idol and an extra vote. Now Jonathan is confused. Jonathan is treating all the girls like children. So Maryanne and Lindsay talk about sticking together with Drea because Maryanne and Drea both have idols and advantages. They all want to vote Tori out. YAY!  But no one has talked to Drea yet other than Jonathan? Jonathan THINKS he is running the show, but he is not.

It’s Time For TWO Tribal Councils

Up first is Mike, Rocksroy, Omar, Romeo and Hai. It really will all come down to who Hai votes for. Either Hai are Rocksroy. Rocksroy says there were no conversations to amongst the guys about who to vote out. OUCH! Whenever you think that on Survivor, It’s you dude! Rocks votes for Romeo. Everyone else votes for him. When he goes to the jury he says to Chanelle, “Hai and Romeo got together and did this. I hope they freeze.

Now the other tribe is brought in. All of their jaws drop to see Rocks sitting in the jury. They all can’t believe it. Maryanne looks like she might cry. She is shaking like a leaf. Then, she starts talking too much. Drea says it is unfortunate that there were four black players and not it seems like they are all being voted out. Then, she says, she is playing her idol tonight so she can stay in this game. Clearly she is not going to vote out Maryanne. So YAY! Goodbye Tori! Then Jonathan whisper to her and asks her what she wants to do. She says she wants Tori out. Jonathan whispers to Maryanne, but we are not told what he said. I do not trust this guy. But, Maryanne nods in agreement. Then Jonathan whispers to Lindsey that Drea wants Tori out and tells her to tell tells her to tell Tori it is still Drea. Again, I do not trust this guy. Then Maryanne tells the other girls she cannot write Drea’s name down.

This Is Hearbreaking!

Then Maryanne says it out loud in front of everybody. This is such a simple tribal. VOTE OUT TORI! Now I am worried for Maryanne. Then Jonathan has to open his big dumb mouth and argue with Drea and Maryanne about whether or not it is racist sending the black people home one after another. Know when to shut the fuck up Jonathan and just be glad you have immunity. Because you are also a misogynist. Then he basically calls Drea and angry black woman. Oh Lord. Drea cries. This is so heartbreaking. I hate this still happens in our world. Maryanne says she is going to play her idol in unity with Drea because if they don’t the viewers will say the played the race card. She’s right. I think that is a strong move and Drea has more advantages she can share. I think Maryanne also has and extra vote.

Maryanne gives an amazing speech. Jeff asks if going upstairs to vote will be traumatic and they could all do it right there. Jonathan asked if they would turn in their idols first. What a prick he turned out to be. They both get up immediately and play their idols. So now it is down to Tori or Lindsey. This should be an easy vote. Everyone is going to vote for Tori so she is going to play her shot in the dark. That’s not exactly how it works. But whatever. Nothing is going according to plan tonight. If Tori gets her shot in the dark, then Lindsay is going home. Please God let Tori go home. YAY! TORI IS GONE! Is there a Ponderosa this season? Because I need to know what is going on over there. But first I need to go watch Beyond the Edge. I’m an emotional wreck at this point.

Me, too. When Jonathan started white mansplaining, I about lost it. I literally cried after Drea and Maryann spoke their truth. It broke my heart. Powerful and poignant. I’m with you TT. I hate that this still goes on. When Maryann sat down and was shivering so bad, I just wanted to hug her, rub her arms and warm that child up. I am glad that Jonathan was hugging Drea when she started crying. I am always reading but don’t have time to comment that much anymore. Hugs to you too TT. I know you are really going through it and am glad you feel the love from everyone here.

Completely agree. Was never about race , religion or anything but personality. Its a shame that the game was turned into race platform, there’s a place and time for everything and that was the wrong one . We can’t have race free fun tv anymore

Well, that sounds privileged. The four black Survivors were so happy to have FOUR players this year when there is usually either none or one. And they frequently go home after older female players. EVERYTHING IN THIS COUNTRY is about race. The only people who don’t get that are some white people who don’t understand that unfortunately discrimination is still a thing. It’s everywhere and every part of life and yest that includes TV show. Also, what exactly do you mean by “race free”?

Jonathan/Fabio makes me yell at the tv. First, stop being so fucking male. You don’t have to be the winner the strongest the loudest the whole world in a hairdo. God, he exhausts me.

I refuse to rep for Puerto Rico, so I am moved by DREA and MA. I have zero sense of “I am my race/ethnicity.” I think I am lucky that way. Maybe not.

that was a really good recap! I now cant stand Jonathan. Dude, if you dont know what it is like, SIT your Ass Down! He again was thinking of how this makes HIM look, and it is not about HIM. Listen to how Drea and Maryanne feel, they have valid points, and if you dont live their lives, you dont know.
I am actually sorry to see Rocksroy go, but he was pretty awkward, he was not getting the social game.
buh bye Tori, glad she is gone.

Great recap! Not loving this season to be honest. I’m so disappointed in Jonathan. I don’t remember such an unlikable amount of people in one season. I can’t stand Romeo. Lots to unpack from this episode. That tribal was heartbreaking and I have to say that Jonathan and Tori, and I assume probably many viewers, still don’t get it. IMO, it makes me ashamed to be white and those who still don’t understand are just willfully obtuse. It was painful to watch but I’m very proud of Drea and Maryanne. Pissed that Tori and Romeo even made it to jury. I guess I’m pulling for Hai now but the previews for next week don’t look great for him. In my best Ken Todd voice,”Goodbye, Kyle!”(I mean Tori, lol)

Here is what I don’t understand, Drea was one of the 7 people to vote for Chanelle out. She was partially responsible for her being the first just member. Then the group of 5 males that voted off Rocks, aren’t they all POCs? Except maybe Mike? So how was race an issue at all?

    Thanks for recapping!
I still like Jonathan even though it was cringe to watch. here’s why:
Tribal is pretty long and we get the edited version of course. So, recognizing all different life experiences, levels of intelligence and the variability of good communication, I like that the producers included some comments from Jonathan. I don’t love that he’s being bashed because he has a right to be who he is ( which I surmise from Drew hugging him and the rest of what we heard, is not a racist) and make comments. Because I think he learned something! I know I did by him adding his comments and then hearing what Drew and Maryann said. If we can’t speak openly, we can’t learn and grow and I wish people were more tolerant of those who aren’t fully enlightened yet. I thought it was really difficult to watch and heartbreaking for the ladies. Probation did a good job with the vote and being sensitive to how emotional and hard this was for everyone. Won’t miss Tori!
I did wonder if anyone was going to( or did and it was edited out ) point out that Channell s and Rocks weren’t the first out, just the first on the jury. There were 6 people out before them, all of whom I assume were voted out for legit game play reasons .

Sorry for the autocorrect. My tablet was very slow. It’s Drea and Probst, not Drew and Probation😊
I also wanted to add that Jonathan was more annoying to me when he was talking over Lindsey before Tribal. Especially because she was 100% correct that Drea would play her idol and Jonathan never thought through it that far. That said, not a dreadful strategy to go hard when you have immunity. Although we,ll see how well that worked for him next week! Love Survivor and thanks again for recapping TT!

Survivor is one of my all-time favorites but I was disappointed when race was brought up during tribal council. Ellie is right–there were several that were voted out prior to Chantell. Were Jenny and Swati eliminated because of their race or ethnicity?

I get what Mary Ann and Drea are saying but I think Chantell and Rocksroy became candidates for elimination in the first place because of their gameplay and relationships (or lack of) with the others and not because they are Black. Rocksroy benefited from the situation after all was said and done. I hope this is not the path that the rest of the season goes down.

This may be controversial but in the TV show competition everybody gets voted out except for two people. It isn’t racism if a POC gets voted out. Let’s focus on real racism at the workplace being passed over for promotions because of the wrong color of your skin. People that use derogatory words for POC. Game shows aren’t racist.

I agree with you. Rocksroy was voted out because of his lack of social game. Chanelle was booted because people didn’t like her game play. I believe that she was voted out by Drea or maybe Maryanne. I don’t recall. They wanted to vote Drea out to flush her idol. Their second choice at least from Jonathan’s perspective because she had an idol too. This all worked out just fine for Jonathan because he was able to flush TWO idols. Hopefully the girls find another one. Drea still has three advantages and I believe Maryanne still has an extra vote.

That said, their emotions when they saw two black people sitting side by side and Drea knowing she was going to have to use her idol. I think it was just upsetting for them that the four of them were going all in a row. You can’t discount their feelings and emotional response to seeing that. They are both playing good games although Maryanne needs to reel it in a bit. When everyone is freezing to death at night and starving during the day, PERKY is more annoying than ususal.

As for Jonathan. I was rooting for him until this week. He seems to think he can mansplain to all the women to get them to do whatever he wants. In the end, he got more than he wanted with two idols flushed so in a sense his plan worked better than he had hoped.

I agree that Jonathan became a real disappointment on this episode. He is now a big target, but he did it to himself. Personally I was delighted that Tori was voted out and Drea remained. Not a matter of race, I just couldn’t stand Tori and I think that Drea is a far better player socially. I really love Survivor and would prefer more game and less social commentary. The sensitivity factor kicked in last season and I saw the writing on the wall. What a shame.

Believe that the perspective of Maryanne and Drea was that they were so happy to have FOUR black players for the first time ever. Then walking in to see two of the four were the last ones voted out and that Drea was next unless she played the idol and the second choice would be Maryanne was painful. Drea is playing a fantastic game. I can’t say the same for Maryanne, but I just love her. I normally hate “perky” but she seems genuine and she makes me happy even when I have a few reasons not to be.

Kind of like you guys. You all make me feel better and I am so grateful for you all. EVEN YOU, LURKERS! You should join us in comments. We need more Survivor fans for sure. We don’t bite. Well… we don’t bite very hard…. LOL.

I have been a fan of Survivor since season one. Your site, with your astute comments and recaps are my favorite by far. I never miss reading them but I don’t comment.

Since I am here I do have a few comments regarding Jonathan. Before this episode I found his brawn impressive but didn’t get much info about his character. It’s clear to me now he is a misogynist bully and not a very bright one. He told his plan to Maryanne and Drea in a way it was apparent it was not to be challenged or questioned. When Drea pointed out the obvious flaw in his master plan he was startled as his limited self didn’t think that far ahead about the consequences if Drea used her immunity idol. He then got defensive and lashed out at Drea. His words were not thoughtful nor thankful, in his mind he was angry that a woman pointed out something that did not occur to him. At this point he is looking like a typical dumb jock who spends most of his time developing his body but not his intellect.

Thanks Rebecca. I appreciate all the comments on the non housewives shows. I too have watched every episode and the first few seasons I was a spoiler. I like to think that the Ponderosa is because of me (even though lots of others were doing it) I used to literally call and ask for contestants at their job. If they were back I knew they were out. Also, I was the first person to know the season that Mike? whoever it was that fell into the fire and burned his hands. Not bragging. Okay yes I am. It makes me feel like I am shouting into the abyss when people don’t comment. xo ~tt

I was so on the fence with this one. From a game standpoint, Drea leaving would have been wise. However, their faces and heartfelt concern touched my soul. However, unpopular opinion here….will this cause future players to be scared to vote off legitimate threats for fear of being called racist? Are we going to keep players because they are POC? Like are they seriously going to get together and say ‘you know we can’t do that’.?Really is a fine line. For LEGITIMATE THREATS. Not speaking about pple that just have no social gameplay, or someone ppl find annoying for choosing to always be happy (Maryann)

Wow. Wow.Wow! Tribal Council was intense! Mad respect for Maryanne’s move to ensure they got to control the narrative of what went down. So proud of her! I am also very happy that Drea and Maryanne’s additional advantages are still unknown to all. Bring it on Bro Alliance!
I was so sure with the luck Tori has had lately winning immunity challenges and escaping eviction, that she would luck out with the shot in the dark. Yay! See ya Tori. Don’t let the palm frond hit ya on the way out. At least that went right!
Jonathon was one of my favorites… until the Bro alliance. Now the grunting, testosterone convos shall dominate. He’s gotten it into his head that he controls all the narratives, the girls have to go, choosing which bros are staying, yadayadayada. That target on his back just grew hugely in the girls eyes, and they have more idols! Never underestimate the power of a woman scorned Jonathon.
