LOS ANGELES — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Friday that Will Smith would be barred from attending the Oscars for 10 years because of the “harmful behavior” he displayed when he struck the comedian Chris Rock during last month’s ceremony.
That’s all I have in me at the moment.
Just saw this one come through on my Newsfeed. Daaaaaaaaaaaammmmnnnn Son.
So does that mean he can not use the term “Academy Award or Oscar winning actor” in promotions for ten years as well?
If it does than the punishment seems fair, if not no.
I think he should still be able to use those phrases. They are true, after all. He won that award fair and square before he slapped Chris Rock.
Then why bother banning him at all? That’s like a gift to not have to attend. Taking away his right to use their name in his promotions should be part.of the ban.
He won the award. It’s his.
Goodness! Well. Dang. Let this be a lesson, I guess. I have read so many opinions about this and there are still a lot of people who don’t think that what he did was any big deal, which disappointed me in that people had really normalized his reaction to what was said and minimized the slap by saying “Well I would have done the same thing if he said something about my wife” but on the other hand…wow. 10 years is a really long time!
So he can still be nominated and win Oscars?
Yes, which makes this whole thing a joke.
Yes, but he cannot attend the show in order to receive the award.
Like Polanski, hah!!
That’s a reward in my opinion! He should have to sit in a room by himself and watch from 6pm to 12pm with no bathroom breaks. Every year for the next ten years.
Now THAT…..would be a punishment!!!
I’m going to let my good friend explain all of that but basically if he wins he cannot accept.
Yep – so what’s the punishment exactly? Remaining an Oscar winning best actor? Not having to sit through boring awards ceremonies for the next 10 years? Still being able to be nominated, win and attend after parties in future? Having resigned from the academy and therefore not having to sit through watching all the terrible nominations across all categories each year?
Another example of rich, famous, and untouchable. The shared psychotic disorder that was the standing ovation that night still makes my blood boil.
Hopefully his hip pocket can keep get hit for a few years so there are some actual repercussions.
There are natural repercussions. His reputation took a major hit. I don’t think the money guys will be as willing to hire him going forward, knowing that bad publicity will follow.
Not enough.
I agree entirely. It still makes me sick.. As does the audience response to him.
I think resigning from the academy means he can’t be part of nominating or voting for the nominated actors.
That’s correct:
Wonder who will produce the made for TV Movie ??
Maybe Chris Rock can play Will?
LOL. Does he have any acting skills? Can he do anything besides insult people with bad jokes?
The one thing we know about Chris is that he can’t sell a movie by himself like Will. Chris is box office poison.
Its a pretty significant punishment imo. Imagine that if he does get to make another movie and he happens to get nominated, which I doubt, the minute his name is mentioned, the first thing people will remember is the slap.
I think everyone has forgotten Robert Downey Jr being found nude and drugged out in someone’s home. Will will be contracted again and he will be successful. That’s just the way of things. People like Will and pay to see him.
Robert Downey Jr. didn’t assault someone on national TV. He hurt himself and is 100 times the actor that Will Smith is. Will Smith is toast. His career is over.
Resigning backfired on him. I think they gave him 10 years instead of a suspension because he resigned.
Personally, I think 10 years is a little over the top. I do not support ‘the slap’ as it was performed. Perhaps if Will had approached Chris later and they’d had a discussion (or a fight) – man to man, it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. A news article and then moving on. What Will did though was absolutely outrageous – he knew they were live, he knew he was acting a fool in front of his friends, peers, future employers, fans, etc… and he still did it. I believe he should be punished but… 10 years? What I’ve outlined is pretty serious, but I just think it’s a lot (10 years) for one incident. No one stopped him, no one made him leave, no one made him apologize, no one tackled him – the Academy is just as much to blame for not protecting Chris (and Will from himself). Had Chris Rock hit him back, and a brawl ensued, then maybe… I don’t know… I just can’t help but feel that 10 years is a LOT.
Not enough as far as i’m concerned. But honestly? With all that is going on in this world, who cares about this over-rated moron and his hissy fit. Strap on a vest and some battle gear and take your pent up anger to Ukraine. Show us what a man you really are.
OH MY GOSH. Poor Will Smith. He can’t ATTEND THE ACADEMY AWARDS./s He can still be nominated. He can still win. Woody Allen has never been a member of the academy. Another fine fellow. /s
This is nonsense. They should have dealt with it in the moment.
If there isn’t a “Ten Years A Slave” parody imma cut someone.
Added another video to the post.
Will’s self-satisfied smirk was second, only to the slap.
Jada’s laughing was heinous.
But when than entitled, self-important son of his added “That’s how we do it!” to his bio on Instagram, was disgusting.
The faces of the four family members at the Vanity Fair party said it all! “We are special motherfuckers who can do whatever we want and get away with it.” BECAUSE … SPECIAL. The obnoxious line been deleted.
I 100% agree with you Nanette He disgraced the Academy. Total classless moves on him and his family.
Forgive me but I am beyond over this BS. Unless his wife was physically assaulted he did NOT need to respond physically. With everything going on in the world right now we should not waste one second on this idiot and his idiotic behavior. Our media has spent countless minutes on this nonsense and how many on the UN Report on Climate Change?!?! If they are correct, Will Smith will be lucky if there is a functioning planet that can sustain life in 10 years, much less an Academy to cater to his ego.
My reply is BFD. He should have had a harsher penalty. He basically assaulted Chris Rock on national TV.
