UPDATE! 4:12 PM PT — Sources who were present at the Oscars tell TMZ, the 2 Academy officials who told Will Smith to leave were David Rubin, the President of the Academy, and Dawn Hudson, the CEO. We’re told they were “furious” at Will, and there was plenty of “yelling” and “heated conversations” backstage with Will’s reps after the incident. As one source put it, the Academy officials were “apoplectic.” We’re also told they told him to leave shortly after the slap.
Things are getting even worse for Will Smith. This whole thing is crazy and sad and tragic and hard to process for me. Every day I read about this my opinion shifts. At this point, I don’t know what to think.
Today, the academy met to discuss disciplinary actions on Will Smith. “Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the academy said. “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
According to the New York Post, “The academy’s board of governors met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct. The academy said Smith has the opportunity to defend himself in a written response before the board meets again on April 18. The academy said disciplinary action for Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.
“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television,” the academy said. “Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”
He is totally going to lose his Oscar and is going to have to become best friends with Jussie Smollett. This is such a dumpster fire. He may be done in the industry period. And that is sad that one bad decision could end your career. But it is what it is.
This musical interlude seems rather appropriate. Plus it is FANTASTIC!
