Summer House Recap: Birthday Hex

Summer House Reca[ BY: POPCULTUREKELLY

It’s the day after the Super Bowl, A.K.A.  Summer House recap day! I’m still on cloud 9 after that amazing halftime performance. In the words of Mary J. Blige: Let’s get it percolatin’ in this dancery! We pick up at Amanda’s birthday party with Paige and Andrea in the bedroom. Awe, Mya feels slighted by Lindsay not letting her go out with her. They’re both single so Mya figures they should have each other’s backs. Hopefully they can talk it out. Lindsay comes home from her night out dejected. The guy she was talking to ended it. In the morning, Mya scoots into bed with Ciara and Paige. Andrea delivers coffee but doesn’t  bring Mya one. He didn’t realize she would be there. Mya is starting to feel left out of things. Even though it doesn’t seem intentional, I hate to see her hurt, even a little.

Dirty Ungifted Thirty

Kyle gets Amanda’s flowers to deflect from not getting her an actual gift. He tells Amanda that he’s taking her out to dinner later. How thoughtful lol. They all head to the beach. Danielle vents to Kyle about her relationship with Robert. She’s starting her own business and feeling the stress of it all. She left her corporate job to start a fashion app. Kyle understands the pressure. Lindsay, Danielle and Mya talk.  Lindsay explains to Mya that she couldn’t get her on the list at the club. Andrea calls Mya “Lexi” which sends her over the edge. She tells Ciara that she doesn’t fit in. Ciara knows how Mya feels. Mya says that she went to school with one other girl who was black. Even though they looked nothing alike, Mya was constantly called by her name. Ciara hugs her as she cries. I want to hug Mya too.

Everyone heads home from the beach. The guys grill while Paige, Mya and Ciara nap. Kyle and Amanda go out to dinner. More talk about their relationship. He tells Amanda that he doesn’t have a gift for her. When asked, Kyle can’t remember the last gift he got Amanda. I’m not a materialistic person at all. That being said, on Christmas and birthdays there should be a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive. One of my favorite gifts is a photo album Husby had made for me. It doesn’t take a lot to show you care Kyle! Amanda tells Kyle she wants a dog, or wants to continue fostering them. Kyle says it’s because he doesn’t make her happy. A cute dog walks by at that moment. For a second Amanda thought it was her gift.  In real time they recently adopted two dogs. At least she’s happy now!

Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes

Back at the house, the gang gets ready for a night on the town. Mya doesn’t feel like going out. She tells Paige that she feels invisible. Mya is feeling sad and anxious.  She wants the gang to try to understand  what it’s like to be a person of color in the Hamptons. She doesn’t know how to talk about it. Mya stays home while they all go clubbing. Oh to be young and hot in the Hamptons! They dance and have a great time. The next morning Craig calls Paige. Craig tells Paige that he spoke with Kristin.  Kristin doesn’t want to look stupid with him dating Paige while hooking up with her. Too late Kristin, You ALL look stupid. Paige is giddy that Craig kept pressing her about Andrea.

As they get ready to leave, Ciara and Mya sit the gang down to talk. Ciara begins, telling  everyone how intimidated she was when she first came to the Summer House. It’s a predominantly white town (and show). She felt like an outsider, through no fault of anyone in the house. Mya pinpoints Andrea not knowing her name after 4 weeks as hurtful. Andrea sincerely apologizes. Alex then speaks. He tells the story of being harassed by some jackass at the big pool party. The guy thought he worked there because he didn’t look like everyone else. Alex had to keep telling him that he lived there. What an absolute piece of shit! Danielle tells us that she thinks Mya is so courageous. Danielle felt all that Mya feels but never talked about it. Both Mya and Ciara feel they are thought of as less than. Until they prove otherwise.

Summer House RecapThe Kids Are Alright

Andrea is grateful that Ciara and Mya spoke their feelings. Kyle says if they are uncomfortable, they all  should be uncomfortable with them. Paige cries. She says they will never understand what it’s like to be women of color. She says it shouldn’t be up to Ciara and Mya to bring it up. They should be checking in with them. ATTENTION BRAVO: THIS IS HOW TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT RACE. Ciara and Mya were raw and honest. The gang LISTENED and rallied around them in an empathetic, caring way. None of it felt pushed or false, it was honest and real. This is too important to fuck up yet again (looking at you Southern Charm and RHONY).Thank you Summer House for proving that we can have hard, necessary discussions in thoughtful and caring ways. I feel like a proud parent!  My heart is sad, yet full tonight.

Next time on Summer House : There’s a bondage theme party. Carl and Ciara kiss. NO! Kyle tells Danielle that he’s miserable with Amanda. Danielle tells Paige and Ciara that Kyle says the only thing he and Amanda have in common is Loverboy. That’s a wrap. What a great episode! Heavy, honest but hopeful. Let’s discuss more in the comments!

I cried with Mya. I felt her anguish. I know people get frustrated with what they feel is the constant intrusion of race into everything. Believe me, I am tired of it too. But I had the sense that Mya was feeling outside. I got the same feeling with that young woman of color from the winter house, I thought she was sidelined too. I think Ciara kind of dodged the bullet because she came in as an interest of Luke, which gave her an instant storyline, and made her seem attractive to the other males. I am trying to remember how other non women of color fared when first coming in, atm I can’t remember.
Idk, I know it was Lindsey’s birthday and she should have been allowed to celebrate where she wanted, but I would have done something else, I mean jeez I would have thought a minor bravolebrity could have wrangled something. As for Andrea, le sigh. A real gentleman would have at least offered to get her a coffee, then he compounded his error by appearing to not even bothering to remember her name.
I think the biracial health nut guy suffers from a degree of invisibility too. Its like if one of the main people don’t give you a connection, you are doomed to the sidelines.
Here’s hoping that everyone does a better job about being inclusive. Or we can keep watching middle-aged Kyle doing the same stuff.

Racism, unfortunately, is still a topic because it’s still here. I was so proud of Mya, Ciara, Alex and Danielle for sharing their feelings. Mya especially. It’s not a blame thing here, it’s learning. And thankfully the gang was responsive and eager to learn. My heart hurts for anyone who feels left out. Mya got me last night. I wanted to hug her and smash the hell out of anyone who ever made her feel less than. It takes courage to speak the truth. I’m just so proud of her/sad that we still have to these conversations. Necessary conversations but we should be more evolved by now.

I have very little sympathy for Amanda because she knows who Kyle is, she knows the issues they’ve had throughout their relationship, and she married him anyway. I did feel sorry for her at the restaurant because for that split second when the dog was walking through the restaurant, she really did think that was her gift — and so did I. I don’t know if he acts the way he does because he secretly wanted her to end their relationship or if he’s just that ignorant, but I hope that marriage improves his character. I’m glad that Ciara and Mya sat down with the group to discuss being women of color. That group needed to hear what was being said. I’m also glad that Alex mentioned what happened at the 4th of July party. You’re right, PCK this is the way to handle discussions about race. I don’t think any of the Housewives of any city are mature enough to have a rational conversation about race. Another great recap.

Thank you!! I agree with all you said. Amanda and Kyle deserve each other at this point. It was so unexpected what happened at the end. I cried, wanted to give hugs then had hope with the group hug. It was a roller coaster I didn’t expect but was so glad it happened. This is the perfect group to have these kind of talks with. They may be a mess but there isn’t a bad heart among them. They’re our mess ❤️

Bravo summer house for showing the housewives how to talk about race. I am embarrassed for my generation that Luanne and Ramona could not tolerate simply listening to Ebony. And to those that say why did Ebony have to arp on the race issue. It was because she could not get those 2 to listen. If people listen and at least try to understand the conversation can be completed in one attempt.

Enthusiastically cosign. The group took a beat to listen to a thoughtfully uncomfortable dialogue without acting like they were somehow the victims. Well done.

Great recap. WTF is going on with Kyle and Amanda that sucks so bad and yet they marry soon afterward? I don’t get it. But anyone who fosters dogs gets a big bye in my book. It takes a very special person to foster any animal, but especially a dog.

That talk at the end was very moving. It showed that this group is a lot more than a bunch of drunken partiers.

I sure hope Mya sticks around. And maybe meets a nice new man.

How great and moving was it to see Maya explain her feelings and then having her housemates just listen. There was absolutely nobody that got defensive. (Looking at you Sutton and Ramona) I would have liked Danielle to share more, but maybe she’s not ready and that’s okay. It seriously made me emotional and proud. (OK – maybe due to pregnancy hormones but still!)

I wonder why Ciara didn’t feel like having the conversation the first time she was in the
house, or the next season. just a thought.

I would guess that she didn’t feel comfortable doing so by herself. With Mya, she has someone who she has common ground with and can draw strength from. It’s not an easy subject to deal with so it was nice to see them come together to talk about what is a really hard subject to discuss.
