Project Runway Recap: The NYFW Finale

Final Four (Photo by: Greg Endries/Bravo)

Well, boys and squirrels, it all comes down to this on the finale of Project Runway. I’m not ready to stop writing Project Runway Recaps but as I pulled up the tag list for this show I realized it’s been a pretty long season. I saw designer names on there and was kind of shock that was actually this season. Meg, Octavio, Zayden, and I’m not even sure who Darren is. That all seems so long ago. I’m going to miss this season. Now let’s go see who wins! But first, Banjo needs to go out in the rain again, even though he just came in from the rain five minutes ago. Le sigh.

Hometown Visits

Christian goes to visit Shantall in Miami first. She has been working in a Miami art institute space due to living with a toddler. Shantall’s collection is true to her past work. She has lot’s of texture and color. Christian suggests that she is using up a lot of time patterning her own print. He suggests she go with her woven looks. Christian doesn’t like her pale yellow look. He wants the yellow out and the grey in. Next, Christian is off to Houston to visit Chasity. She has no theme for her collection. She’s a mess. Chasity (NOT ME!) gets really chocked up when her daughters ages 7 and 12 (how is that possible, she’s a baby herself!) talk about how proud they are of her.

Next we are off to see Coral. She has a ton of art in her house and lots of plants hanging in … wait for it… macramé containers. LOL. Even her curtains are macramé and she stores her fruit in macramé hangers! She is focusing her collection on her Mexican heritage. Christian is very impressed by the amount of work she has done. He does say that there is a lot of macramé which is too expected. She needs to go a bit more abstract. Then, she teaches Christian how to do macramé. Finally, we are back in Queens to visit Kristina. She has a lot of graphic designs but not many actual pieces. Christian suggest one silhouette that is very different from anything she has ever made.

Three Months Later…

After several months to create their designs the final four return to NYC. They all really want to win. It’s sad there can only be one winner. They are all super happy to see each other, and sniff out the competition. The runway is in 48 hours. That is a lot of pressure. They need to pick their models. Katrina wants someone who can ride a hover board. Chasity wants ten strong black models. Her theme is “the black sheep.” Shantall wants diversity. Coral wants models who look like warriors. And she needs one male model.

Kristina has a few completely sheer outfits where the models breasts are fully visible. And the hoverboard has a high probability of going very wrong. Yet she is not deterred by either of Christian’s suggestions. Shantall looks like a clear frontrunner. Or not. Her collection is starting to say “office wear.” It’s not sexy. Somehow Christian manages to fix it. Chasity just loves Christian so much. It is so sweet. She was already missing him last week before she even went home.

The Runway

It’s time for the runway. Why am I nervous for all of them? I don’t really have anyone I want to win over the others. Whoever wins will be a worthy winner out of this bunch. Usually, there is a designer I don’t like but not this season. Elaine is not there for fashion week? She must have Covid! Tommy Hilfiger is the guest judge. It seems like the audience if family and previous Project Runway contestants.

Next, Kristina is up first with her “Lead Me To Life” collection. Her excited parents are watching via livestream. I can’t say I am a huge fan of Kristina’s looks. I will say her collection is cohesive for the most part. But, it is also kind of repetitive at the same time. I do like the black and white look. And the colored prints are growing on me. The hoverboard was the final look and WOW! That was a look. That model is amazing. The hoverboard actually was a brilliant idea!  Seeing all of her models at the end together, she did a really great job with the way she ordered the collection. Nice job.

Up next is Shantall and her first look is AMAZING. Some of the other looks are a bit disappointing. Others are beautiful like the gray suit with the corded pants. Her plus size model look is amazing. Her black and white looks look very expensive. I’m not a fan of the red material. Dear god her final model was amazing. Have I said amazing enough? LOL.

Who Is Going To Win?

Chasity is up next and she is already crying talking about being the black sheep. Loved her plus sized model look. She’s really got a shot at winning this thing. Her looks are all very cohesive but different. Damn. She has a couple of gowns that took some WORK! They are lovely and youthful, and very Chasity. I’m a little emotional. Again.

Coral is up last. That’s interesting. Let’s see what she’s bringing. Bless her hear she sees like a little kid up there. I love that her first model is male. I would also quite enjoy some alone time with that model. lol. He’s so hot I had to watch him twice. Okay maybe three times. Or four. I’m very impressed with everything she is sending down the runway. Macramé and all. Also the hair stylists have all been crazy good for this runway show. Her finale look with the headdress was breathtaking. For me, that was the best look of the night. I feel like she is going to win. I would have never guessed that until now. The model was outstanding. I’m emotional again. I kind of woke up that way today. The eliminated contestants all gave her a standing ovation!

The Judges

If the judges could not choose last week, how the hell are they going to choose after that. It was an excellent runway from all of them. Whoever they pick deserves it. I’ve been a Chasity fan all season but I might have to give to Coral.

Nina loved the hoverboard in Kristina’s runway. Brandon hated it. Brandon loved Kristina’s graphic prints and styling. Tommy Hilfiger said some of her looks seemed very couture but the prints were not going to sell a lot of garments. Coral is up next. Brandon loved the menswear. He said her show was laced with soul all the way through and that is a rare gift. Tommy was not big on the macramé. But he loved the tailored pieces particularly, that last look. Nina was not a fan of her black pieces but loved her tailored pieces with embroidery

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Brandon said nice thing about Chasity’s look. Tommy says that she should be making costumes for the stars. He seems to love her. But he doesn’t like the ruffle pants. Brandon says he will take the ruffle pants and sell them on Instagram. I agree with Brandon. Nina says it doesn’t all have to be beads and ruffles. She needs to have more range. Brandon says that Shantall had a signature look the whole was through. Her final model was one of the most stunning looks of the night. Tommy Hilfiger agrees. She is wearing a look that she took out of the collection. They said she should have changed it out for the red thing she sent down the aisle. That red look was bad.

Designed by Shantall Lacayo — (Photo by: Greg Endries/Bravo)

And The Winner Is…

Nina already wishes they could all win. I think so too. Brandon says Coral has one of the strongest points of view and yet she has never won a challenge. Tommy loves Shantall. Especially the gray suit. Tommy is judging based on the ability to sell mass quantities rather than the fashions themselves. That is not how Project Runway judges make decisions. I miss Elaine. Brandon doesn’t really like Shantall’s looks that much. Tommy likes Chasity.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

And Shantall, who seemed destined to win by every other designer that worked with her did indeed win. I would have chosen Coral. And I was annoyed with Coral most of the season. I was the least impressed by Shantall this week of all weeks. Funny how that works. But if you go by the entire season, then yes, she is the winner.

Wow, I know that everyone on the show has been coming for Shantall all season. But, the other three girls could not seem to find a kind word to say about her. Shantall on the other hand was very kind when speaking about them. In other news, it is annoying as hell that this after show is up with the winner announced and the pictures likely won’t go up ON THE SITE FOR MEDIA until tomorrow! UGH.

This was a long season. I was watching the marathon of project runway yesterday thinking they were showing the previous season. Forgot that the designer who makes the crazy clown costumes was still this season. I think the right designer won. I really hope that Chasity takes Tommys advice and designs for celebrities. I did miss Elaine and hope she’s ok. Not sure how long ago it was filmed. Seems like she could have participated virtually

Oops. Looks like the finale was filmed very early in her pregnancy since she was 20 weeks in November. Maybe she was taking extra precautions and who can blame her? She was missed, though.

Project Runway Season 19 Finale was filmed in December of last year. The reason why we didn’t see Elaine Welteroth at the finale was because she tested positive for covid-19 at the time they were filming the finale. She’s doing well though!! This is one the best seasons in Project Runway history.

When you say December of last year — do you mean December 2021? I was thinking based on weather, this was the September 2021 Fashion week, so I am curious.

I liked all 4 ladies, but Shantal’s collection was my least favorite. It was boxy and one-note.
I too was surprised the ladies didn’t have anything nice to say about Shantal. You could feel that they would have rather ANYONE ELSE to have won.

I noticed that too, but Shantall made a comment early on about winning being her focus and I think that left a bad taste with the rest of the designers. She said it very bluntly and I think that rubbed some of the designers the wrong way.

Shantall is very sweet, I don’t think she said it in a “cutthroat” wat m but it came across like that to the other designers.

Coral’s collection took my breath away and, to me, was the standout collection by far! I liked her throughout the season but did not think she had that in her.

I did not understand the admiration from the judges for Kristina, but this runway show I felt was her best work and I loved the prints.

Chasity’s work is great, but I was more inspired by her story than I was by her clothes on the final runway.

Shantall had my least favorite overall collection, but I felt that she deserved the win for how amazing she was the entire season. Plus, she had a few looks in that final collection that were some of the best overall!

This was such a great season. I missed Elaine being on the final runway show!
Very bummed to see how bitter Chasity and Kristina were but it was kinda immediately after the result, already having little-to-no sleep, putting together a runway show, and losing in the same day so its understandable.

Hope a lot of this season’s designers come back for an all-star season!!

The choice of Tommy Hilfiger as the finale judge was an uninspired choice and HUGE mistake. This was not a “design a capsule collection to be sold on Amazon” contest — it was a RUNWAY contest. Hilfiger is wildly successful — also ends up at TJ Maxx— because he makes (courtesy of Tim Gunn): clothes, not fashion.

The designers GET IT — almost every season, there is some sort of haute editorial look combined with a “marketable” look. This was the HAUTE LOOK contest!

Coral was robbed. Her collection had EVERYTHING the judges SAY they want. AND MORE! Including COLOR! Why do so many PR designers shy away from color? Did they never play with Crayola 64? I wish she would use her son as a muse for an entire collection of menswear.

Kristina… more gimmicks, as her entire season was … I HATED the fucking hoverboard AND the final look. Loved the poppies (apropos as I am ordering my poppy seeds!). Did Hilfiger REALLY think she would use them every season! (BTW, Tommy: Chanel had her camillias and incorporated them in multiple ways over decades.)

Chasity does not need to show more range. Lots of designers have their niche. The only thing Hilfiger got right. Keep doing gowns, Chasity! One word: Marchesa!

I liked Shantal, but did not love it. Some pieces, not the collection. Her craftsmanship was evident, but nothing SINGS, nothing that would make a woman feel special — EXCEPT for that SUBLIME long black dress. She owes her win to one thing (person) — DD! DD’s exuberance sold that look; sold the whole collection!

I loved Coral through the whole season and she was the clear winner for me. I loved the black and hot pink look. I think she could do a lot more with that. She’s generated a lot of buzz and I hope she does very well for herself out of this. Chastity too — I think she’ll have generated a lot more work for herself.

Even though I picked Coral, Shantal’s two black & white looks were some of my favorites of the night, and that black column dress inside the black & white coat… how in the world did that simple shape look so amazing? I actually gasped when I saw it. And the judges were blown away by it too. I can see her having won on the black column, the black & white items, and the gray suit alone. Agree that the red was terrible. I hated the huge buttons and the huge earrings. Brandon was like, is it so bad that it’s good?, and I was like NO – it’s BAD!

I couldn’t quite catch what Kristina was saying on the After Show. I know she was disappointed, but did she say she should have won, or Shantall shouldn’t have won? Christian was sweet with them.

I loved all of the designers but the one that absolutely rubbed me the wrong way was Chasity. I’m happy that she didn’t win. If a white contestant would have made the statement “I want to make sure that all of my models are strong and white to promote the white culture”, it would have been a national issue. Why does she get a pass with all of this new CRT and sensitivity stuff being pushed now? Is it only white people that need to be sensitive these days? I completely understand pride all the way around. Just not sure why it doesn’t go both ways sometimes.

Thank you Gingerella for “getting it.” Chastity was not trying to disparage the White models, she was simply stating how she feels and I’m glad that someone who isn’t Black got it too because I totally felt what she was saying. White designers have been designing for white people since forever — while many art disciplines throughout history steal from Black creatives and “elevate” their ideas of beauty, fashion, music and beyond when a white person does it.

A Black designer designing for Black women and showing that on a National platform is powerful when you don’t grow up seeing that — only a handful of tokens and exceptions that made it.

CRT and sensitivity have nothing to do with political correctness, it’s acknowledging real history and it’s influence on society even to this day. The purpose of being PC is to not offend. The purpose of CRT is to understand and acknowledge.

Everyone of of us needs work to understand the past and be more inclusive in the present. We can all do work!

I hope they bring back a model as host next season. Stylists and designers definitely know their craft, but an actual model perspective is necessary. That’s just my non-couture, boring housewife opinion though lol. Love this show and always enjoy your recaps!

I was happy Shantal won, but really would have been okay with any of them winning. Some of Chasity’s looks reminded me of things I have seen before. Didn’t someone else do the big ruffle dress and the ruffle pants in a previous season? Jay? Austin? I know Christian has done an ombre wedding dress like that. It has been bugging me since the finale. I swear I have seen those pants on Project Runway before. Although I have been home for weather closures, and therefore day drinking and I am also a few months away from having to write my address in the back of my underwear with a sharpie because I can’t remember sh*t! HAHAHA!!! I snorted coffee through my nose but am definitely stealing your idea about the sharpie! Ugh … I used to blame it on becoming a mom but 20 years later, here I am with a worse memory than before!!

I think the 3 “non-winners” on the after show spoke volumes about what happened behind the scenes. I thought Coral was the only one who came across as gracious and happy for Shantell.

I think all of them were great but wonder if the winner would’ve been different if Tommy Hilfinger hadn’t kept the conversation and the focus back to the actual competition. It’s like they are investing this prize in who can get up and running with a marketable product each year. That’s my take and Shantell was it! (Or Coral honestly). The other 3 are incredible (although not a fan of Kristin or whoever the poppy girl was .. see? Can’t remember her name).

Shantell was rightly saved by Christian and listened to him. And she acknowledged that many times. I bawled my eyes out for all of them. Except “poppy” girl. She came across as bitter. Not a good look

I loved Coral’s looks but think having macrame’ everything was a little hokey. If she had embroidery or home made lace, or specially sewn suede on her clothes, maybe. and I am someone who can literally macrame’ a plantholder with my eyes closed. I stopped when it fell out of style, but those wallhangings are coming back! That said, she did make some beautiful clothes, and her last look was majestic.
One of my favorites was the hot pick gown that Kristina made that was so long and fluttered in the back as the model walked. I would have loved to see that dress on a hoverboard! I loved the idea of the board but that final dress was terrible.
Chastity makes beautiful dresses, i loved her collection, but I dont think it was unique enough to win,
I am not surprised Shantell won, she had some great tailoring, though I did not love her last collection. I will miss this show but I hope it means Top Chef is coming back? I hope I hope

Shantall got into trouble several years ago at Miami Fashion Week. She was scheduled to do a runway show through a design platform called Nicaragua Diseña, presenting Nicaraguan designers. Nicaragua Diseña was funded by the Nicaraguan Tourist Agency and co-founded by Shantall and Camila Ortega Murillo, daughter of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Ortega is well-known for his repressive regime, and things were particularly bad at that time. There were protests by Nicaraguans living in Miami and Shantall cancelled the show.

I’m wondering if this might have been a reason the other designers were not crazy about Shantall. Seldom a good thing to an authoritarian dictator.

hahaha–Seldom a good thing to be associated with an authoritarian dictator.

Also, I was rooting for New Yorker/Russian Kristina, but I think she was living in a fantasy bubble if she thought she could have her models walk down the runway in sheer material.

So glad Shantell won! I picked her as the winner from the second episode. What I am pissed off about is the immaturity of the 3 runner ups who couldn’t find a kind word to say about her. Then, how about when the 4 of them were sitting around the table??? The 3 runner ups toasted each other but not Shantell. She has the maturity to carry her brand into the future. Until tonight, the only one I didn’t really have the warm and fuzzies for was Kristina (I didn’t like the way she always poo poo’d Christian’s suggestions like she knew more than him……um NOE YOU DO NOT KNOW MORE THAN CHRISTIAN FUCKING SERIANO ). After seeing them all on the final after show and hearing underlying insults from them I feel that all 3 are sore losers. Congratulations Shantell, you deserved that win!

The looks for the night were Kristina’s hoverboard and floating blue gown, coral’s breathtaking embroidered gown with crown and Shantals black dress and long coat. I liked some of Chasity’s beaded dresses, but not a fan of the ruffles. Shantals work was the most marketable and I suspect that influenced the judges. She seemed pleasant enough during the series, if always focused, so I don’t know why the other competitors were so hostile. Not just the ladies, Bones too. Anyway ladies, it’s not a good look, nor is criticizing the judge’s decision.

I thought Coral was going to win! Shantal’s collection was not inspiring and the grey dress she was wearing was not cute. And the styling of her collection ~ the earrings ~ Nope. I do not think that it’s fair that Tommy Hillfigger all of a sudden judges on marketability of the garments. I watched it all and I never heard any instructions for the final collections to be marketable. That aspect was frustrating. I wonder how things would have turned out had Elaine been there. Coral’s collection was absolutely beautiful and I thought the fact that her colleagues (ALL of the designers from the show) gave her a standing O was notable. Also her hair and make-up selections were edgy and beautiful. Having said all this, I really liked them all and wish them much success.
Now … Bring on Top Chef!

This was a fabulous runway. All four designers stayed true to themselves and presented beautiful work.

I was so happy Kristina did not send 10 one-sleeved layered outfits down the runway, it was a relief to see those different designs. Christian was hysterical trying to persuade/force Kristina to not send her model(s) down the runway with her breast exposed. The owe “she’s from France” cracked me up.

I loved Chastity’s collection and can see several of those looks on the red carpet of the Grammy awards and also alongside Bones designs on a Met Gala red carpet. I fell in love with Chastity’s daughters and their love and pride in their Mom moved me to tears.

I liked the majority of Shantall’s designs but thought they did look a bit boxy and more corporate than was necessary. My least favorite dress was the gray dress she wore in the finale. Maybe it needed tailoring, but I thought if hung on her poorly and was just way to boxy.

Coral’s collection was beautiful, and fully deserving of the standing ovation. I really thought Coral was going to win.

My two favorite pieces of the night were Coral’s final piece with the amazing jacket and headpiece and Shantall’s long black dress and white coat. Both were simply stunning.

Agreed about Hilfiger as a judge – maybe during the season, but not the finale, he was too focused on retail sales — and carrying one or two techniques forward year to year.

I did love this season — and TT you are correct about the length, I forgot Katie (crazy patterns/design girl) was this season and I think Darren was the young man who hit on Christian in the first or second episode…and did not make a dress in the first episode so Bones made his dress too. Why did our lovely Zayden cover his face? I missed seeing his handsome face.

TT thank you for another great year of recaps. I will miss this show.

I was actually underwhelmed by the finale this season. Each of them had a few pieces they were very nice but overall there was not one collection that wowed me. I was definitely not expecting Shantal‘s collection to win even though I know the judges favored her. Coral should have taken this one! After watching the after show and seeing how sour the other ladies were though, I was kind of happy for Shantal. I would however like to know what it was during the season that made them so standoffish toward her because we did not see the reason televised….or I missed it…

I was happy with the end result of the show. Kristina being as bitter as she was that she didn’t win was so childish and nasty.

So I watched the recap from Christian before the actual episode. Kristina I think is her name seemed so catty to me on it. Yeah bad attitudes, who wants to work with that! Seriously these people need to realize they are representing themselves to future buyers, if you have a bad attitude, good luck with that! Sorry to say Hilfiger was right about prints unless their classics. Shantall seem to have the most commercial collection with few changes needed. And I knew as soon as I saw that long black sheath, she won hands down. While the rest of the ladies presented beautiful collections, chantal was the most ready and easier to work with, accept changes more readily than others.

I wasn’t rooting for anyone heading into the finale but, for whatever reason, I liked Chantalle’s collection the most. Not sure where all of the Chantalle dislike is coming from, but I found her collection elegant, lovely, striking, and extremely wearable- and I’m not sure why that’s a bad thing. I did love Coral’s collection (particularly her final look) and, based on the audience response and the fact that her collection was presented last, expected her to be the winner, but Chantalle was hands-down the MVP of the season. Chastity was extremely likable and I was actually expecting her to win prior to the final episode. Unfortunately, I just didn’t dig her NYFW collection— all of the crystals and dark ruffles on most of her looks. I realize it connected to her theme, but for me it just all felt so heavy and one-note. (Though I LOVED the electric blue top and wide-leg pants outfit. I wish she had created more outfits in that vein because I thought that was beautiful!) Completely turned off by Kristina’s sour attitude and comments during the after show. Aside from the fact that her collection was, by far, my least favorite (and that I don’t think she deserved to be in the finale), I find it ironic that she was the reason Chantalle was eliminated initially (due to the fact that Kristina had immunity during the team challenge during which they were paired and it was HER poor design choices that caused her team to lose) yet she STILL did not posses the humility to acknowledge that Chantalle was an amazing designer who did an incredible job. Just gross. I hope she regrets how she came across in that interview. Coral seemed kind and sincere but the others, I don’t know… I am very happy with the outcome as I feel the most deserving designer won.

TT, thank you for your recap. Anyone could have won and it would have been deserved.

I was happy for all of the ladies. Kristina—no surprise-insisted on keeping true to her vision. It was better than I expected but hoverboard was unnecessary. And nipples do not equal sexy, Kristina.
Shantall was good, 2 pieces were great but I was surprised we didn’t see more fitted designs. Her nod to the 80s was evident. She’s a great designer but rubbed her colleagues the wrong way early on, they haven’t forgotten it.

Coral almost won, she listened to Christian and went beyond her macrame. I’m happy to see her growth.

My girl Chastity is rainbows and beading, I love fancy , sparkly things so I loved her collection.

I just looked at the aftershow. Shantall was sitting with her arms crossed. I think Shantall is and has been laser focused on winning, not getting close to the other designers. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just her way while being on the competition.

I actually liked all 4 ladies and though I wanted Chasity to win, I knew going into it tonight that Shantal would probably win and was OK with that too because I liked each designer’s aesthetic. HOWEVER, IMHO, CORAL should have won it all. Her collection was LITERALLY breathtaking and each of her looks sincerely made me happy just looking at them. With that being said, a couple of things come to mind. 1. Yes, the 3 designers who didn’t win (especially Christina and Chasity), could have been kinder to the winner. They SHOULD have been kinder and more gracious because it is decent and shows a modicum of etiquette to congratulate the winner regardless of what you think of her. 2. They DO seem to have iced Shantal out, but like Bones said in one of his interviews, we the audience, are only privy to a small fraction of their time together and we really don’t know what type of attitude Shantal was giving them. 3. If she WAS in fact giving them bad vibes, I really believe the language barrier was probably a factor too and she may have come off a lot more aggressive and brusque than she actually is. LASTLY BUT NOT LEAST….let’s give a standing ovation to the men in their lives!!! Coral’s son was ridiculously handsome and looks like her slightly younger brother (Coral looks every bit of 26 or 7 to me. Shantal’s husband was quite easy on the eye too and appeared to be supportive. AND CHASTITY’S FIANCE` was so handsome he even perked Christian up and had him asking “who is this amazing looking man” or something like that. These ladies were ALREADY WINNING long before they came to Project Runway with these gorgeous men in their lives.

Coral’s collection was the best. Also her dress was the best design in the photo challenge.
Shantall has a very winning attitude, and if I may say: it did not look like Coral took so much space and acts very humble. Too bad she never won a challenge!
