Project Runway Recap: Haute Hair

January 14, 2022 by tamaratattles 66 Comments

Project Runway RecapReally, this Project Runway Recap is going to be about coordinating hairstyles with their looks? Don’t they do that every week? Why do we need to bring in hair designers? This hasn’t really been my favorite Project Runway season. I’m mean, it’s good. It’s just not great. I’m sick of the designers being pair with some other sort of designer. Just let the fashion designers make good fashion and put it on the runway. It’s not rocket science. It’s fashion. The final six are all super nervous in there quest to make it to final three. Each designer is matched with a hair designer who gives them a specific hairstyle. They draw for Bones and he gets DD. That’s a leg up for him right off the bat. Has DD even lost a runway she walked?

Lots of the designers are doing gowns or at least something upscale with all the elaborate and gorgeous hair designs. Except for Aaron. His inspiration is a play on a rain coat? Because nothing says beautiful hair like getting you style rained on? Oh Aaron, you really need a win this week. You may need to rethink that.

Aaron Celebrates A Birthday

Back in the designers townhouse, the final six celebrate Aarons birthday with a doughnut birthday cake. You know what would be a great birthday present for Aaron? A win. Next, we are off to Mood. They have thirty minutes and $500. Shantall wants to make a white leather suit for her model. She envisions a rapper going to an MTV event. Oh Lord, here we go. Christian tries to dissuade her. But this is the season of no one listening to Christian. Christian actually likes the raincoat idea. There are a LOT of weird ideas in the work room. Christian is really supporting Aaron. Seems like a lot of editing for an Aaron win.

Kristina has way too many black and white prints happening at once. I’m worried about her. Christian guides her to do less of all the prints with her black pants. Coral doesn’t seem to have a connection between her look and her models pony tails. Bones is doing a huge red carpet dress. Something to do with his father’s death from heart disease. Bones is going full on literal heart with his red dress. There is way too much fabric involved. Even DD can’t walk in this dress. I’m worried. Aaron’s raincoat is not getting done fast enough. It’s only a one day challenge, dude.

Too Many Ideas, Not Enough Execution!

Kristina is going to be in the bottom. Shantall’s white leather pants ripped on the model during fitting. Who even wears white leather pants.  Christian is in full on I told you so mode about the leather. The models leave and everyone is sort of in the weeds. This whole challenge is not going well. I haven’t seen one really great look at this point. Chasity’s look is more of a tiger costume. But, she is determined to get it straightened out. I am not sure what Kristina is even trying to do to fix her design. Literally everyone is worried. There is way too much left to do and time is almost up.

Aaron likes his look but he is also running very low on time. We are not seeing much of his look. I am expecting Aaron’s first win. Speaking of Aaron, it’s still Aaron’s birthday and everyone gets their frustrations out on a birthday piñata. It seems like this episode is very short on filming the actual looks. Probably because no one seems close to getting something done to send down the runway.

Runway Day

The final six wake up with three hours until the runway. Chasity gets a facetime home with her kids and we learn that her mental health has been so bad in Covid that she has suicidal thoughts. I hope none of you are that far in the hole. I know things are difficult especially for those of us who are alone. So if you need to talk to someone you can call The national suicide hotline 800-273-8255. They are there to listen. And so are we. Chasity was very brave to share that.

With two hours to go, Aaron is basically starting his jumpsuit over. He’s making new pants. I really think Katrina is goin home. Aaron’s new pants are worse than the first one’s so he ditches them. And now he has yet another hot mess on his hands with twelve minutes to go. So, may even go home. The good news is I haven’t seen the judges do a close up look all season. Have you? Did I just miss that part? I have never seen the designers struggle this much with a challenge. All the looks are bad really. Chasity’s and Aaron’s are sort of coming together last minute. But none of the designs are going to drop the judges jaws in a good way.

The Runway

Kristina comes out looking like a supermodel. Her look and hair should have been on the runway. Elaine compliments her and asks if that is one of her paddies? patties? I have no clue what that means. Someone is going to have to explain it to me. Model, Precious Lee, a model and advocate for size inclusivity is the guest judge. Her boobs look painful. I am SHOCKED that Bones got the first look. The first and last looks are usually the ones production thinks are best. I mean, it’s red. so there is that but the is A LOT of fabric going on here. But DD makes this look seem like it really does belong at the Met Gala. DD is a queen. There are actually three separate looks with two reveals. So, Bones is probably in the top.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Out next is Coral’s look. It looks a LOT like a black version of what she did for Leah McSweeney last week. Did she just dye the “flesh” tones black and reuse the material? Somehow, Shantall’s white leather look is beautiful! I didn’t see that coming! The pants needs some hemming. But, she could be in the top!  OMG! Chasity’s look is AMAZING! How is it that these looks all turned out so well. Chasity could win the whole thing too! It’s not a tiger costume anymore. It’s very elegant! And the hair is AMAZING! Aaron is embarrassed by his design. His model has camel toe. Could the real Aaron edit mean he is going home? How the hell is Kristina’s look closing out the show? Her look is awful! WAY too much fabric.

Pictured: Coral Castillo — (Photo by: Greg Endries/Bravo)

The Judges Critiques

The judges start with Kristina. Wait, they like her look? I hated everything about it. At least Brandon and Precious Lee point out the poorly constructed bra top on the plus-sized model. How is this one of Elaine and Nina’s favorite looks? Next up is Coral. They are not as impressed with Coral’s look. They don’t think it goes with the hair. Whatever. They LOVE BONES LOOK! He even has yet another way the look can be worn. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this look on the runway. And once again, DD worked it. Oh Nina didn’t like Bones look. She thinks it was trying too hard. These judges are all over the place. Brandon thinks Bones had too many ideas.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Up next is Aaron. They love the coat, but the jumpsuit is “tragic” according to Elaine. This may be the end of the road for Aaron. 🙁 They want to see it without the raincoat. It’s a totally shit show in the back. But the LOVE the raincoat. Precious Lee really wants the raincoat. Up next is Chasity. They LOVE LOVE LOVE her Tiger dress. It is black girl magic and stunning. She is clearly the winner. Or perhaps not, Elaine doesn’t like the print and thinks it overpowers the hair. Good grief, these judges are more all over the place than the looks! Finally, we have Shantall’s look up for critique. The all seem to agree that they liked her outfit. But it is hard to even know who won at this point.

Pictured: Shantall Lacayo — (Photo by: Greg Endries/Bravo)

The Judges Decisions

The judges say the middle two are Bones and Shantall and they are both safe. Chasity is in the top. Elaine again refers to the entire look as black girl magic. How the hell is Kristina in the top with that soggy boob tube on a plus sized model? Seriously, that look was a hot mess that should be sending her home! And she is on the top? I don’t think that Precious Lee liked the look either. She only mentioned the beautiful finger waves. Someone make it make sense!

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Aaron is on the bottom. The jumpsuit was AWFUL.  And so is Coral. Coral’s outfit was chaotic. I agree with sending Coral home. But, I am worried about Aaron. I don’t think he was the worst. THANK GOD CHASITY WON! SHE DESERVED IT! It’s her third win. She’s on her way to the finale.

And sadly it is Aufweidersein for Aaron. Coral is broken hearted that Aaron is gone. Aaron is taking it better than Coral is. Or frankly better than I am. I am really sad that Aaron is out. Next week is the editorial challenge with Coco Rocha as the model. That should be amazing. But right now I have to go watch the exit interview with Aaron. 🙁

The interview has only been up for a hot minute and all the comments were FURIOUS that Aaron went home over Coral.  But, did Aaron leave with a new man? Fun fact, pretty much every eliminated designer says the Shantall is going to win the whole thing.

Sorry for the delay, I waited up until 2 am hoping for photos. They didn’t show up until noon today. I’ve been clicking since I woke up. I’m off to the Mexican Drive Thru where you order food, pay for a bag of stuff and go home and see what they actually put in your bag. Hint, it is never what you order. I keep saying never again, but today, I’m feeling lucky!

When Aaron pulled neoprene as a fabric at Mood, I knew he was doomed. I yelled at my television — NOOOOO not the neoprene!” He went out of his fabric comfort zone and paid the price.

As for the rest of the looks, I usually love Kristina’s look but not this time, I hated this look — not only did I think she did not meet the challenge, but it in no way looked like what she described during consultation with the hair designer. Kristina said she was thinking “Great Gatsby” but not literally…well, I do not think that was even close to a roaring 20s style. Hair, yes absolutely, roaring 20s…all the striped fabric, no.

Coral’s look was beautiful, but went completely against the hair style. I though because she too did not closely meet the challenge she would go home, but her clothes were beautifully constructed while Aaron’s was a hot mess. Had Aaron done a simple shift dress under the coat, he would have at least been safe. I admire risk taking, and I guess it is good to go home on a risk?

Shantall’s look was stunning, I could totally see that on Alicia Keyes and I really liked Bones’ look as well. I love Bones, he is a very good human.

And Chastity, woo hoo. Simply beautiful. I kept thinking, Queen, when her model walked down the runway. Chastity killed this challenge. I am so pleased she won.

Could this be the first all female finale?

Tamara — thank you for sharing the National Suicide Hotline phone number, Chastity is brave to share her story, perhaps together you and Chastity will safe a life.

Once again I feel like the judges and I watched a different runway! How could that black and white mess be on the top????
    And Bones’ drapery mess? Middle?
Aaron would have done better to make a neoprene shift dress and just let the coat be the focus.
So disappointed that he went home….
And honestly, Chasity’s look was really all about the hair. The hair was incredible! The dress was Flintstone couture!

Nope, you’re not alone. I didn’t agree with the judges on this one. Kristina’s outfit was awful. How can hemming a few straps of fabric and hanging them on the model be one of the judges top picks? How did that mess go with the models hair?

Chasity’s look was a costume complete with rips lined with glitter in a poor choice of fabric. The model’s hair was amazing. The outfit should have been safe. Great tailoring.

Aaron’s raincoat was so cool. The hair was great. If only he would have made a quick tube dress with those 12 minutes — or hemmed a bunch of boring fabric and throw it all over his model. **eye roll

Shantall’s outfit went will with the hair. But, really, it was a pair of white pants that were too long and a cute crop shirt and a so-so jacket. Nothing innovative or special. Maybe I’m salty because Aaron went home but his jacket was so much better than Shantall’s outfit that we could go buy off the rack today. Pretty sure Yolanda has those pants and they weren’t too long on her.

Bones outfit was great but the rope on the top confused me. I normally like his fashion but this was — what was that on the models chest? The model came out looking like she was carrying a bunch of beautiful red fabric. I liked the skirt and color and choice of fabric for the top. He should have won, IMO. It worked overall better than any of the other runway outfits.

Corals jacket was great and overall tailoring made the outfit. That hair wouldn’t go with anything. I’m not sure what outfit would go with that hair. Overall it was not a rood runway outfit.

This week the only things I loved besides most of the hairstyles were Aaron’s rain jacket, Bones’ overall look without the jacket.

Bones was taking a very literal approach to a heart. I believe the ropey stuff was supposed to be arteries.

I HATED his inspiration and all the fabric. But when his look went down the runway, I thought it was FANTASTIC and INNOVATIVE.

Bones is making me a fan, something I never thought possible.

Even though I loathe animal prints, I thought chasity excelled at making an interesting dress that meshed well with the hairstyle. I liked Bones and Kristina’s looks too. Yes, the boobs needed support, but the contrasting patterns and draping were flattering to a plus size model.

I will miss Aaron, he seemed so sweet and unassuming, as well as talented. Totally over Coral and her strings. Her look would have worked better with slick, rather than messy, ponytails.

I agree the season is not as exciting as in the past. I miss the attention to detail by Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs, the supportive comments of Tom Gunn and the distinct personalities or point of view of the designers. I hope the hair/dress challenge doesn’t mean it’s jumped the shark.

This year, if they check the actual tailoring or craftsmanship up close, we don’t see it. The closet they have come was calling out the hot mess under Aaron’s raincoat. When Aaron first said raincoat I was worried that the raincoat would send him home. Oddly the raincoat might have won with better undergarments.

Here’s what bothers me. Shantal’s jacket that literally had the same wavy design as her shirt she was wearing. I guess if your going to do that, don’t wear it, kinda gives me the one trick point this week vibes. I thought Bone’s look showed promise early on but those snake looking swirls that coincidently the one judge happened to be wearing as well, better but still, again, what the hell! This week was just ehhh. I think they needed the night off versus here we go again, seemed to stifle their creativity. Don’t get me started on that tiger print cut out monstrosity, he let’s add some ugly beading to the slashes like that was always the plan. This show had promise, I was eager to see how they all turned out to a universal whompwhomp across the board! I think macrame should have gone home mainly since the challenge was all but ignored, at least Aaron did think about the hair! Who wants a one shoulder coat with that poor unsupported model in the stripes. Seriously do these designers hate her, they always seem to do her dirty. Last week the cups were too small on Wendy and now the designer never though, hmmm a build in support system maybe. Yep it’s a bit of a let down so far.

I’m gonna get in trouble for saying this BUT, the only reason I can think of for Kristina to be in the top is because that model is almost ALWAYS in the bottom and several designers have gone home designing for her. If it happened one more time they would have to admit that having just one designer trying to design for a large woman when others get oh say DD, is not fair and a bad idea. I agree that designers should be able to design for all body types, but it would be much more equitable for there to be several challenges where everyone is designing for larger women. All of the models should be within about a 3 size range in order for the judges to discern the design and compare the skill levels.

      💯!

I think that when someone like Christian Siriano designs awards gowns for curvy women (especially when others designers refuse to) that is A BEAUTIFUL THING.

BUT, and here come the haters … clothes mostly look better on the extra tall and thin freaks of nature. That is WHY they used them as fit models for years.

If *IIIIIIII* were a designer, I would have my clothes come down the runway on the tall, thin ladies and then do my final lap with “real women” dressed in the same clothes.

Nothing against her personally, but obviously they’re dealt a different hand than the rest and clothes look best on super skinny tall models. Sorry I’m not sorry.

Again, I feel like we are not getting the upclose viewing of the looks from the judges. Or the taking into account the entire body of work of the bottom two. As ALL the commenters say on Christian’s after show, this was Aaron’s first fuck up. I think he was ROBBED of several first place finishes in prior episodes. For reasons we don’t know it seems they decided that Kristina, Shantelle and Chasity would be top three. Kristina isn’t the best designer and she doesn’t work well with others. Maybe she is related to someone powerful. Bones has gotten sweeter over time. The snake hot dog dress was meh. The black and white dress on the plus model was awful

Shantall has a very good energy and I like that she feels so inspired when designing. I think though that her not-so-happy- I won again attitude was a bit too much for some other contestants😄. Liked her look here but the front with the buttons did not look as cool as the pants with those cool pockets.

I LOVED Chasity’s look. The bold tiger was perfectly scaled for a long dress. The beading and cutouts were the perfect amounts and the perfect placement, but my favorite parts were those DIVINE POCKETS. The loops were both a mini pannier and created visual resonance with the loops in the hairdo. If there had not already been the phrase “Black girl magic,” this look could have started it.

Aaron … WHYYYYY (in Nancy Kerrigan whine)? WTF? At least he had a great, unique trench. It went with the hairdo, THAT was the grist of the challenge. But Coral, who had incongruent pieces that judges said was a TOTAL FAIL with the hairdo… REALLY? Aaron goes home. At least he WILL SHOW — along with nine others — at NY Fashion Week! Yay!

Kristina should have gone home. The fabrics, heinous (and I LOVE mixed prints). The top was horrendous. The pants were MEH at best and unflattering. The half kimono/coat was STUPID! The fucking emperor has new FUG clothes! WTF? The combo of the oversized baggy clothes with the skull-hugging finger waves made the model look like a pinhead. So the clothes did NOT nail the challenge. Did the judges have ergot poisoning, take mushrooms, fall under the influence of Kanye West … oops, YE? WWTS? What Would Tim (Gunn) Say?

I believe Tim Gunn would say that Kristina did NOT make it work.

ETA: Also there was a season when a male designer always seemed to randomly wind up in the top and he was allegedly blowing one of the judges. Kristina reminds me of that drama. IJS. There has to be an explanation somewhere.

Sam was adored by Isaac, but I also think I recall there was something between a guest judge and Sam happening.

When is someone going to dress that beautiful “curvy” model with the short hair in a design that flatters her and other women with big breasts? Has Bones had her as a model? It is outrageous and really freaking sad that no one has really made her shine on the runway. They put so much material on her so we can’t really see her figure. Or that face.

This! Can NONE of these designers make her a dress? I hope that Christian Siriano makes her one to make up for this weekly humiliation. I need someone in the top three to CHOSE HER as one of their models. But, I’m not holding my breathe. #BigGirlLove

Coral should’ve been the one to go home! Her looks all feel the same to me, no ingenuity from one week to the next. Aaron on the other hand had so much more range. On another note, I hope his love connection works out….:)

Well, as usual I ordered a ton of food, because I know I will only get half of it. THEY HAD TAMALES! THEN NEVER HAVE TAMALES. THEY ARE NOT EVEN ON THE MENU. GOD ONLY KNOWS HOW MUCH THEY COST. I SHOULD HAVE ORDERED SIX. WHAT WAS I THINKING? I stupidly only ordered one and then added one when I got to the window. I knew I was probably fucked. I got the ten dollar quesadilla and the chips and cheese dip. I don’t even like their chips. But, this is real Mexican food and they don’t each queso or put cheese on anything so I have to get the queso and add to to everything. I also ordered a taco and two bottles of Mexican co-cola. (It sucks that I live in ATLANTA the home of Co-Cola) and have to pay huge prices for Mexican Co-Cola to get THE REAL THING. But it is what it is.

I got everything I ordered except for the taco. All I cared about when opening the bag was ARE THE TAMALES IN THE BAG. And they were. They were very small. And quite delicious. I’m struggling a bit to eat the quesadilla but I’m heating up the other half today. It is HUGE.

Fun fact. I’ve ordered the shrimp tacos ( when they have them, it’s a sometimey thing like tamales) at least five times and never gotten a shrimp taco. I usually get “a taco” but not a shrimp taco.

This place is EXPENSIVE. So I go maybe once a year. It’s also a place I am afraid to drive to. It’s within walking distance except it is on a huge very busy highway. I have to drive past it, and then make a left and turn around in the Tattoo shop (down the street from the sex shop, because my hood is CLAZZY) so it’s a whole anxiety thing. I’m just thankful that they put anything in the bag even though I could go a fancy restaurant and get a steak dinner with one drink for the same price. lol.

We have a farmers’ market and there is always a tamale stand. But then Mexican food is not hard to find here. I love the Mexican sodas.

We have TONS of Mexicans here but not enough real Mexican food. There is a Mexican ice cream store next to the yellow store (corner store) but I’m more of a savory person. Finding a homemade tamale is damn near impossible. I should have gone back today for more .Instead I need to try and eat the quesadilla and the avocado that is probably already going bad. I am struggling to eat again for some dumb reason. The tamale went down fine, the quesadilla not so much. I wish we had a farmers market with a tamale stand. I’d be their best customer.

When I taught school, I had a book called Too Many Tamales. I asked my Mexican parents to bring Tamales. (I had no idea the work I was asking at the time) and they all showed up with tamales and I showed up with the American kind in a can. LOL. They were very confused.

Of course, I got in all kind of trouble AS USUAL with the admins. for having an unauthorized “party.” IT WAS A READING ACTIVITY LOL. And it didn’t stop any of the teachers OR THE ASSHOLE ADMINS from enjoying a tamale or two… IJS. #RebelWithACause

I thought Chasity’s look was tacky! The print, the cutouts, the glitter beads. . .and it was a silhouette that has been done before and done better. Was very surprised she won, even though I love her. That said – I am sitting here judging her in a ratty purple bathrobe with a mismatched tie and old slippers!

That sounds like the height of fashion. I’m snuggled up in a faux jaguar print fuzzy throw with slippers to match.

I wouldn’t wear that out in public though.

Sadly, all of my wonderful neighbors have had to look at me in this ensemble! I have no pride and will wear it as I schlep to the mailbox or haul the garbage and recycling cans out to the curb. Although it might be why THEY always bring my cans back in for me– so they don’t have to see it again!

Y’all. Me and Nanette have a complicated friendship. SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING. And I like to think I KNOW EVERYTHING. (spoiler I don’t). So when we agree on something? IT IS THE TRUTH, and those of you who do not agree are just plain WRONG. The planets have aligned. Me and Nanette agree! On this anyway. I still need her advice on a lot of shit that I will ask for and then ignore. She’s a very patient and forgiving person. 🙂

So sad my favorite went home 😢😢. Coral definitely should have left for that awful look. Aaron was always in the top 2 or 3 and is so good! While that jumpsuit was a mess, the raincoat should have saved him.

I agree! The raincoat was awesome! He just should have kept it simple underneath. I enjoyed him and do hope like someone else has suggested, that he will be on All-Stars. Anyway, I still miss Praje and will always think of his beautiful flower gloves. That’s the sucky part of Project Runway, there can only be one winner. I do think Coral should have gone this time. I love Bones, his heart creation was pretty. DeDe could rock a trash bag and be stunning but the red was beautiful on her. If I remember correctly the plus size model that Christina had showed up to the fitting with no bra in the first place. I think that influenced Christina’s end result for the worse.

Yes, I remember the no bra as well. It’s hard to imagine someone that size with large breasts walking around braless. Is that why the designers keep putting her in weird bandeau like tops? A simple flapper style dress in gold or silver with those breasts up where they should be would have been amazing with the finger curl hair design.

I do not mean to dog on the plus size models, but if someone gets a size 24 model, they should get more money for fabric than everyone with size 2 models. It’s just simple math that two or three times the fabric is needed.

I would think that the models would be REQUIRED to carry a tote bad with different styles of bras and underpants. Especially good would be one of those convertible bras that can be crossed straps, halter, strapless, etc.

You are right that Kristina said her model did not have on a bra. I was wondering if she were wearing a top/dress that had built in cups or support.

Chasity’s look spoke to me on several levels. When I was young, mothers straightened our (little Black girls) hair with a straightening comb that was heated over the open fire on the gas stove. We held our ears and prayed that our mothers (or hairdressers) didn’t burn our ears or neck (or God forbid a little water get on the straightening comb and the steam burn our necks), and learned at an early age that beauty is sometimes pain. They braided our hair, at the latest, until we got out of elementary school and then it was all about straightening your hair with a comb or a perm. I applaud the young girls and ladies of today for embracing the natural styles though adulthood and actually coming up with natural styles that are appealing, THE HAIRSTYLIST CHASITY HAD WAS AMAZING!!! That hairstyle was everything and was perfect for Chasity’s print. I wish I were young enough to pull that entire ensemble off because I promise you it would give me my WHOLE LIFE. I loved it and I loved that it UNAPOLIGETICALLY celebrating Black girls. I hate Aaron left. His work was DEFINITELY not the worst of the night, and I love his spirit.

I agree about Chaity’s hair stylist. It was amazing.

I’m not Black but have the curly girl problems. My sisters would use an iron to straighten their hair. I’ve used the perm to straighten my hair. It does work, but I’m always using something to straighten it.

I’m know in the minority and wasn’t sad to see Aaron go. I understand why many people feel like this was the first time Aaron screwed up so he shouldn’t have been sent home. However, the designers should be judged on the look they do for each week. Not their body of work. Like the tag line says “In fashion one day you’re in. And the next day you’re out” Also I wasn’t over how Aaron treated Bones. A major….character flaw that I hope Aaron can correct. I’ve also liked Bones from the very beginning, so my thoughts about a person’s character are probably questionable.🤣

Tamara patti is a nickname for a wig. I believe it’s because Patti LaBelle use to rock wild wigs back in day. So Elaine was referencing Kristina’s wig.
