Somehow it is already time for another MAFS Boston Recap. It’s time for us to go back to Boston and try our luck again there. The last time we were in Boston, MAFS only matched three couples. It was season six and the MAFS track record was really bad, so they were thrilled when Shawniece Jackson and Jephte Pierre ended up staying together. They are also one of the few couples that have stayed together and are still together. Hell, they may actually be the longest surviving couple. Oh no, I forgot about Jamie and Doug, who barely made it down the aisle on season one. They seemed like the worst match ever. And yet, they are still together to this day. Hope springs eternal. Let’s see what we are dealing with here.
Lindsey & Mark
Lindsey, 34, has always looked up to her grandparents’ relationship they have been married for more than 70 years. She also knows what she wants and what she brings to the table, and firmly believes the experts will be able to find her a life partner. Lindsey goes to tell her dad and her brother that she is getting married. Lindsey has crazy eyes. But, see seems like fun. Her last LTR, she was engaged and her groom cancelled the wedding five days before the ceremony. She is estranged from her mother.
Mark, 37, has wanted to be married for years and has been on multiple dating apps, but only seems to have met women who aren’t ready to be a wife. Nicknamed “Mark the Shark,” he applied to Married at First Sight the last time the experts were in Boston and truly thinks the show will be his ticket to love. Mark thinks women should be ready to move in after six to eight months. He also has three cats. He seems desperate. And that scares women off. Mark has found out he is getting married and is off to a cookout to tell his friends. His father is dead and his mother is in assisted living due to dementia.
Katina & Olajuwon
Katina, 29, has spent the last two years on a self-love journey. She’s always dreamed of being a wife and mother but has struggled to find the right partner. She believes this process works and is ready to grow old with someone. When Katina tells her girlfriends she is getting married in two weeks, they are shocked and excited. Katina is a reformed party girl. Or at least she is about to be reformed. She did not have a father growing up. She’s had no relationship models.
Olajuwon, 29, is a self-proclaimed ex-playboy. As a playboy he went by Isaac. Now, he wants a partner with whom he can share life and hopes to have a family of his own one day. He went to school with Jephte so he has faith in the process. Olajuwon announces to his entire family at a huge cookout. They are all very excited. But one of his brothers thinks he has lost his mind. He is a self proclaimed Mama’s boy. His father is deceased. This guy wants a wife to cook and clean. Olajuwon says that if his wife can’t cook, that’s a wrap.
Noi & Steve
Noi, 33, is known to friends as someone who loves easily and freely, a quality that has gotten her into some trouble in the past. She’s choosing to get married at first sight because she’s tired of being let down and trusts that the experts will have her best interests at heart. Noi really wants to start a family. Noi announces her engagement to her girlfriends. She has their full support. She has done a lot of international dating. Then she tried moving from the West coast to the east coast to change dating pools. She comes from an immigrant family from Laos. I feel like I am missing something about her. She’s really pretty and seems normal. What’s her roadblock?
Throughout his life, Steve, 38, has had incredible examples of healthy, happy marriages. Recently, he found out his grandparents, who have been happily married for over 60 years, had an arranged marriage. So, marrying his future wife at first sight does not scare Steve. He’s hopeful the experts will be able to find him a match who will make him as happy as his grandparents. He also has and aunt and uncle who had an arranged marriage. Steve announces his engagement at a large dinner with his family. The news goes surprisingly well. He also wants lots of kids. He may need to stop driving around the country in a van and get a job for that to happen.
Jasmina & Michael
Jasmina, 29, knew early on that she had a passion for children, so she dove into her career helping local youth as an early childhood education teacher. Her last partner had a baby with someone else while they were dating. She is the third oldest of nine children. When she was two, her biological mom walked away from the family. WOW. When she was seven her dad remarried. Then at some point they got divorced and he moved to Jamaica. But, she asked her stepmom to adopt her and her sister and she did. Jasmina says she’s done the work and healed from her trauma. Jasmina meets with her family to share her good news. The news pretty much lands with a thud.
Michael, 28, has tried all the dating apps with no substantial results. A heart-to-heart conversation with his sister led to him signing up for Married At First Sight. He wants a wife and family and can’t wait to find out who the experts have picked for him. Michael wants a big family. Michael’s father died when he was eleven. His brother also died. And when he was in college, his mother died of breast cancer. He’s been sort of a lone wolf ever since. He has trouble opening up to women. He’s afraid to open his heart again. His sisters are very supportive of his decision to marry at first sight. His brother says he needs to be prepared to compromise with his spouse.
Alyssa & Chris
Alyssa, 30, devotes her time to rescuing animals all over the world, leaving little room for dating. Her last relationship ended in heartbreak after her ex was ready to propose and suddenly dumped her. She believes Married At First Sight is her opportunity to find the one. She is pretty, athletic and she seems like a good person. She’s a catch. Alyssa’s mom tries to put up a brave front and seems hopeful about her getting married at first sight.
Chris, 35, has had back-to-back long-term relationships since he was in high school. He feels like the relationships end once the honeymoon stage is over. He is heading over to tell his mother he is getting married at first sight in two weeks. Apparently, she doesn’t even know he applied. He has told his mother that the cameras will be there because his company is filming a real estate show. Once he drops the bomb, his mother thinks she is being punked. Once she believes him, she has lots of doubts.
The Brides and Grooms Meet Up
I’m not even halfway through this recap. I just realized it is THREE HOURS LONG! UGH! It’s going to be a long night. The grooms are all really worried their brides won’t like them. The brides mostly talk about their families and their mothers in particular. This causes Lindsey to burst into tears since she is estranged from her mother. Noi is so sweet. Seeing Lindsey upset has her tearing up. The guys seem less than thrilled with Olajuwon and his playboy stories. He’s trying to settle down. But, honestly? He doesn’t seem ready. The guys are skeptical. The guys are worried that Michael is too picky. There isn’t much of anything wrong with Jasmina. Michael better not hurt her.
Next the girls and fam go dress shopping and the guys go for tux fittings. Michael seems super nervous. His brother is worried that Michael has a tendancy to shutdown. I’m worried because Michael says he just wants everything to be perfect. Again, he better not hurt my girl Jasmina. Jasmina’s dress is beautiful.
Then, the bachelor and Bachelorette parties begin. There is a drag queen or two at the bachelorette party. Lindsey is sort of a party girl. She’s going to be a handful for Mark. I’m not sure he is ready for all of this. Katina is much more reserved. She’s not into sex toys and is more into vanilla sex. Cut to Olajuwan rubbing up all over the strippers and doing sexy dances at the bachelor party. Ut oh. Then Olajuwan says wants his wife to go to the strip club with him. He’s so not ready for this experience. He’s going to be the asshole groom of the season. I’m calling it now.
Noi is wanting to get it in on the wedding night, Steve wants to wait a long time for all that. Noi and Katina need to swap husbands. Alyssa socially isolates with her friends and ignores the other brides. Chris isn’t down with the strippers either. That should work.
It’s Time For The First Wedding
It looks like that is going to be Lindsey and Mark. Lindsey is a handful. I’m not super optimistic for Mark. Lindsey’s dad is there to walk her down the aisle. Mark’s mother seemed indifferent about her son getting married. It’s not really clear what sort of “rehab” she is actually in. So, Lindsey doesn’t need to worry about explaining why her mom isn’t there either. She was worried about that. She should be worried about all the champagne she is guzzling in the limo. She’s wasted. Also, she has to pee again before going down the aisle. And, she can’t find her vows.
Somehow, the wedding is going well even though neither of them are legal to drive at the moment. They both seem to have good first impressions of each other. Lindsey’s hands are swollen and Mark can barely get the ring on her. Lindsey keeps on talking through the ceremony. They seal it with a real kiss. That went as well as could be expected under the circumstances. They go straight for more champagne. Lindsey goes to bed early and she was worried about that. He says he changed his workout schedule recently so he goes to bed early. Mark is a bit overwhelmed by her energy.
Next time, the weddings seem to have a few more issues. Who would have thought, Mark and Lindsey would be the easy couple?
