Project Runway Recap: The Last Straw

Project Runway Recap
PROJECT RUNWAY RECAP Pictured: Prajjé Oscar Jean-Baptiste — (Photo by: Greg Endries/Bravo)

It’s time for another Project Runway recap and I am trying to be excited for it. But honestly, I’m not sure what is going on in the universe but everything seems like a struggle these days, for pretty much everyone I know, myself included. So, I am ready for a much needed distraction. Plus! It’s the unconventional challenge!

We start at the designer’s house where Anna is still very upset that her bestie Octavio was voted out last week. She had bad dreams all night. I feel you on that one, girlfriend. Coral is still freaking out about being on the bottom. That was just ridiculous that she was even there in the first place. The final eight get a text form Christian Siriano to meet him at a bar for mimosas to celebrate their win. Hey, I’m no stranger to beer for breakfast, but Isn’t it like 7am? I do not do 7am anymore. I’m more like a “breakfast” at 4:30 pm kind of person at this point. What? I work the night shift! LOL! Prajje already knows something is up.

So Now What?

So off they all go into a trap of some kind. The guys start popping bottles and Christian arrives with Brandon. Brandon explains the history of cocktail dresses.  Then Christian tells them it is the unconventional challenge and they will make a cocktail dress out of anything they can find in the cocktail bar. Chasity is excited. She often uses “weird stuff” to make clothes. They have twenty minutes to grab stuff. Brandon advises them to PLEASE watch the hot glue. That means someone is going home for hot glue. At least it is a two day challenge.

Everyone is randomly assigned models as their “bill.” The designers procedure to ransack the bar. I love Prajje. He grabs some shit and then goes back to drinking champagne and he put a bottle in his bag!

Back at the workroom, no one seems to have a plan. Bones is using broken glass as some sort of mosaic. Shantall’s black straws plan seems interesting.  Prajje has leather from the couch he destroyed and lace. Chasity is all straws and bottle caps. Aarron is relying heavily on a red straw fringe. Anna is crying over the Octavio elimination instead of focusing on the task. Ut Oh. Christian comes in to help. He is not happy with Anna’s tin foil boobs dress. He shifts her to her EXIT sign. Kristina is struggling. Christian gives her a lot of advice. Christian encourages Bones to focus on the broken glass stuff. Bones actually listens for a change.  Prajje’s dress is not impressing Christian so far. The end of day one, no real looks are appearing.

Who Wants A Model?

I do! And it needs to be DD. I am fading fast tonight you guys and I slept in super late. I’m just trying to hang til the end. But it’s a struggle and this is my favorite episode of each season. Shantall’s dress out of black straws is stunning. For some reason she want’s to add sleeves. Christian Siriano and I don’t think that would be good addition to what is already great. Oh wait, I lied. Christian wants a sleeve. I do not. OMG, is this Prajje? The dress is HIDEOUS. I love Prajje and don’t want him to go home! Chasity’s dress is nothing but muslin. She could be the one going on for hot glue and I don’t want to see her leave either! Bones seems done really early.

Anna is in trouble too. I don’t hate her THANK YOU dress made out of plastic bags but she wants to add some exit signs to the dress somehow in ways that I do not as of yet understand how that would work. Christian is not thrilled either. Is Coral the one who macramés sort of as her signature? Because she is doing it again. Kristina is melting plastic to make crystals. Sound like a good idea in theory. Then she tells a story about how Crystal’s killed her parrot or something. I’m having a bird crisis. I do not care for birds. You know how when you have a laptop there is something programed to put up a lovely photo when you log in? Well in the last few days mine has been crazy ass  OWLS!  I am DEATHLY AFRAID OF OWLS. How do I make it stop???

It’s Runway Day! (And A Hot (Glue Gun) Mess

After another night of sweet bonding with the designers at home, and an impromptu fireworks display, it’s runway day.  Bones dress looks great! So does Aaron’s and Shantall’s.  My girl Chasity is in trouble. Like ask your model to help you make shit kind of trouble. NOE! Kristina’s look is really lovely but did she rely too much on hot glue? Oh God. Christian calls Prajje’s dress a “doily dress.” I do not need a sad ending to this runway. I just can’t today! OMG Christopher John Rogers is the guest judge! the stakes are high y’all.  Shantall is the first one up and I think she is the winner without seeing any of these other looks. It’s amazing. All black made out of straws. Brandon’s jaw literally dropped. It’s the clear winner. No one can beat this look. We can cancel the rest of the show.

But wait, Anna’s Thank You Exit dress is also very exciting. These designers are finally coming thru! Then comes Bones! Also incredible! Elaine remarks to Christopher, “It almost looks better than fabric from mood. Are we finally getting to see the “best designers ever” as previously adverstised? Well so far, yes! Then out comes Coral’s dress! I love it too! This has to be the best unconventional challenge EVER. Next up is Chasity, also good. Not the winner but surely safe. Or not with this level of competition. Aaron’s look is also good. Perhaps not the winner, but good none the less. Oh Prajje, my love, you is in danger! NOE! Kristina’s look is lovely, but I don’t see how anyone beats Shantall. Brandon seems very impressed though so you never know.

The judges agree. Best unconventional challenge EVER!

The Judges Decision

Bones and Coral are safe. How the hell are they going to put three people in the bottom for this challenge? I already know they are sending Prajje home! Why put two other people in the bottom?

Top Three:  First out is Aaron. They love it. It is on closer inspection very well crafted. Christopher says that the caplet is unnecessary. But, he loves the dress. Shantell is in the top. They love her dress. I love her dress. She needs to win. Nobody did it better. Kristina’s dress is beautiful. But her model is very exposed on closer inspection. Oh God the judges love Kristina’s look. Shantell better win this.

Bottom Three: Sadly Chasity is on the bottom! Some of the popcorn on her dress did fall off though. Oh no, Nina said “Too much of a glue gun did her in.” She’s in serious peril here. She is already crying. Anna is in the bottom? Anna? Why do these judges hate her so much???? This is ridiculous how they treat her every damn week! Christopher hates it too. Prajje will be the third and we will sadly lose him. 🙁 His dress does sort of look like those dresses people make out of toilet paper at a bridal shower though.

Who Won And Who Is Auffed?

Oh hell no the next challenge is to create a reunion look for the housewives. And Andy fucking Cohen is not a guest judge for women’s fashion? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And it look like we are done until January 6th. 🙁

Shantall obviously won making her Siriano save worthwhile. She was FANTASTIC this week. She sobs when she wins. I’m not crying you’re crying. I lie. I am crying most of the time these days. It’s Auf Wiedersehen time for sweet Prajje. Also, I wish men would stop wearing nail polish. Straight men at least. Christian was very sweet to Prajje.

I’m heartsick over losing Prajje.he seems like such a decent human being and losing him so soon after losing Zayden is just too sad. I wish them both Japanese and much success in their design careers and Iife.

That dress was an absolute joke though. No way they could’ve let it slide. I physically cringed and let out a groan when it came on the runway.

I wonder why Bones only scored “safe”? Was it maybe because he used real fabric so a bit of an easy way out?

At the end of day one I was muttering “this is a shitshow” to the tv.

Unfortunately, Prajje’s dress reminded me of those TP holder dolls you see on the back of grandma’s toilet. But man, the top 3 dresses were stunningly gorgeous!

Amazing runway! How did they all knock it out of the park using restaurant material, yet completely bomb when asked for leisure wear?! That I shall never understand. However, well done to all, especially Shantall.

With the exception of Prajie & Chastity’s looks, this was an amazing runway. Even Bones put up something stunning. But the top 3 all were amazing. Kristina’s was absolutely stunning as was Aaron’s. But Chantelle making that “fabric” and sewing everything with not one bit of hot glue was a-fucking-mazing! The fit was extraordinary. Right winner, right loser. I don’t know what Prajie was thinking. That was just a fugly, awkward dress. That poor model is just being abused. Why he thought the underdress should be that stiff leather was a good choice. Oy! It’s a shame really because he does have talent. Looks like it will be an all female runway because the 2 males left are just not strong enough. I like Aaron a lot but unless Christian is there to mentor him, he has a tendency to go mumsy. I do think the final 3 will be Anna, Kristina & Chastity. And maybe Chantelle.
And that was the best unconventional challenge ever!!!!

I may be wrong but hasn’t the same model worn the eliminated looks for the last two weeks? She may be difficult to fit but she doesn’t show the fashion very well. It may be just a coincidence.

Yes – the designers who get the very slim models almost always do better. You have way more flexibility for design on a thin body, and in this case, way less fabric to create. Which is never discussed but is blindingly obvious.

Having said that, Prajje should know better than to put a busty woman in a dress that goes right up to her neck.

I am finding that these contestants have no idea how to dress a plus sized woman. It is sad what they have come out wearing this season. Look at what happened last week! They need to step it up there, but otherwise doing some great designs. Now we can really look towards who might take this all the way. Maybe Chantel has is, maybe Aaron. Sorry about Praje, they need a last chance sewing room

This is the case every year, unfortunately. It’s sad that it’s still so hard for designers to design anything other than a size 0.

Chastity’s design was flattering for her plus size model.

I think the designers can design for plus size but they get fixed on their original ideas and don’t adjust their idea for the model’s body type.

Think of designing a shift for a paper towel holder tube compared to a bottle of Dawn detergent. It’s easier to do straight. If the dress forms were the exact replica of the models, it would help. I HATE when they get dinged for FIT. Ask Brandon or Christian how long they spend getting things to fit perfectly.

Plus, thinner models, were — before SUPERMODELS — considered “clothes hangers,” curvy models are more uniquely shaped. I understand this is not a popular opinion, but FOR THE SAKE OF TIME, I wish the models were all traditional fit size. I cannot even imagine the designers trying to FIT, let alone PLEASE, the fucking Real Housewives. I smell MAJOR MELTDOWN around the bend.

The have forms FOR THE SIZE OF THEIR MODEL. It’s not any different. The problem is they don’t know what works on full size models and just want to make a larger size of what the “coat hangers” wear.

Very favorite unconventional challenge ever! Shantell deserved her win but Aaron’s was my second favorite, followed by Kristina. Chasity had a really close call! Praje’s look really deserved the loss but he’s a really nice guy and I’m sure we’ll be hearing about him again. Next week looks like a fustercluck, High maintenance housewives and Andy 🙄

I really wanted Aaron to win this one, but I have to admit that Shantall’s is the best of an amazing set of designs. I was impressed by the work they all put into it. I think Prajje needed time to step back and reassess, but he never had the time. He probably could have done something with the leather or the doily flowers, but they didn’t work together. And there is no way that doily flowers were going to win against what the other designers were creating with their fake beading.

In other news, I just got back from the pharmacy with a package that had a $3 coupon that I forgot to peel off and the checkout kid didn’t notice or didn’t bother. I hate that. I buy the item because the coupon makes it a good price and then I overpay. Whatever… not going back to the pharmacy in the days of covid. Especially with people coming in looking for the rapid test which was sold out.

Stay home if you can and stay safe, everyone!

A designer needs to be able to design for all sizes and shapes of women. They know this coming in. They have been having a variety of models sizes for the last few years. The model is never the cause of anyone going home. It is however sometimes responsible for someone’s win.

Yes, but the judges never take into consideration that it’s simply harder to do high fashion on a plus-sized figure, rather than a very tall thin one with very wide shoulders and very slim hips, let’s say….

When I look at Shantal’s beautiful design again, I liked it better WITHOUT the sleeve — and those two straps. The sleeve is I’ll-fitting and looks like the model has one Popeye arm! Still, the WINNER. I cannot believe she did ALL of that in two days.
