Project Runway Recap: Flower Power

Project Runway Recap
PROJECT RUNWAY Recap  Pictured: Aaron Michael Steach — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

I’m sort of in slow motion today my brain is slow, my typing is slow and I am hoping that knocking out a Project Runway recap will change my mood and inspire me to maybe do a couple of other (very late) recaps. I hate that there is less than an hour of daylight left. When do we fall back?

We begin with Chasity getting love letters from her daughters after he big win. Bones is upset that he was in the bottom. His look was awful but he loved it. Everyone heads to the workroom. It has been covered in beautiful flowers. Lewis Miller who is apparently a floral designer who does “flower flashes” all over NYC. The designers will work with a graphic designer to create their own floral fabrics. They have two days for the challenge. There is supplemental fabric available. But, that should not be their primary fabric. I already feel like someone will be in the bottom for using too much of the premade fabric.

Print Designs Are Made

My homeboy, Zayden, always designs his own prints. And they look amazing. Hopefully, he can pull out the win this week. I hate this free for all model grab they keep doing every week. I think the top three from the previous week, or even the bottom three should get to pick first. There needs to be some order to this process. Shantall, who I literally have no memory of, is making a print that doesn’t really scream floral. She could be in trouble. Darren‘s pattern is very bold. I’m rooting for him to have a good week. One of the girls, Katie, is working with a graphic designer where there seems to be a language barrier. This is not good. I love how all the designers have such different backgrounds this season.

Darren is the baby of the bunch and some of the other designers give him the side eye. Apparently, he is really into Sponge Bob Squarepants. The next day, the designers are all mostly happy with their fabric. All the gay guys are in love with Anna. I do not like Shantall‘s fabric. But, she loves it. Kristina’s fabric is very nice and I think she’s going to make sort of a kimono, which should be lovely. Octavio has a plus sized model with a 47 inch bust. He seemed prepared for the challenge. His fabric is black and white which is either a really good idea among all the brighter florals or a really bad one.

Christian Siriano Weighs In

Is it me or do these episodes seem really rushed? I’m 24 minutes in and it is already near the end of the second day! Sabrina is doing a jumpsuit with a “modern burka.” Christian loves the idea. He does want it to be a bit more elegant. Coral is including leather accents with her floor. Kristina’s look is not exciting Christian. He says it is very boudoir. Again, Christian is not giving out much advice. He does give Zayden some advice regarding the seams on the front of the dress. I hope he listens to that. Christian says that Octavio is giving his plus sized model a sack dress.  As a fat girl, I love me a sack dress. But, I do see Christian’s point. Christian hates Bones crop to with a fit and flare skirt.

Christian says Katie’s look is Doris Day goes to the mall. Also, he says her look is more of a clown costume. OUCH. She decides to change the pants to a skirt. She is really doubting herself this week. He also eviscerated Aaron’s look. Shantall’s print is barely floral at all. That’s a problem. Prajjé’s print didn’t come out the way he wanted it to. Christian says the print is “a little couchy.” He says is going to paint over the fabric. The models come for their fitting but some of the designers have so many changes to make that they don’t have a completed look for fitting. I love Darren’s look, but Christian hates the skirt.

Runway Day!

The day of the runway, Shantall gets really emotional because it is her son’s second birthday and she can’t be with him. Her son has a speech delay and isn’t speaking yet. With only three hours to the runway, the designers are really stressed to finish their looks. There is a lot to do. Katie is really behind. OMG! It as been dark for eight minutes and already there are noises in the kitchen. I CANNOT! UGH! Octavio’s look is disappointing. Prajjé had decided not to paint on his fabric. Everyone is super stressed trying to get something down the runway!

Gigi Hadid is the guest judge. I thought it was Drew Barrymore. Yes, I know I have serious facial recognition issues. LOL! Brandon heaps compliments on Gigi saying she is “the most recognizable face in the fashion industry. Yeah, not so much.

Time To Walk The Runway!

I always feel like the first and the last looks are going to be top three. So I am surprised that Shantall’s barely floral look comes out first. It’s not a bad look, it’s just that Shantall didn’t understand the assignment. It is a beautiful three piece suit though and her model is excellent. I didn’t see a lot of Aaron’s look in the workroom but I love the yellow floral look he sent down the runway. He has a shot at top three. Anna’s look is weird. And weird on this show is usually called “very couture.” So she might have a shot at the top even though I don’t like the dress or the fabric. Bones has a plus sized model who looks great. But he made a black skirt and only used his floral on the top. We’ll have to see how that goes over.

Coral also did black pants with a floral top. Again, pretty but they black might get some points deducted. Chasity’s look is sort of floral meets BDSM. She’s not happy with it. She ran out of time, but she has immunity. I LOVE Darren’s look. If nothing else it will keep him safe. It’s youthful. And his model is perfect for the dress. Octavio’s model rocked the black and white dress. He loves it. I’d mark him as safe. Safe-ISH. Sabrina’s look is a bit too much. She accented the model’s lady garden and added a hajib that was a step too far. She could be in trouble. There is also a lot of shiny pink fabric going on.

Katie’s look is still kind of clownish. She knows she is in trouble. Prajjé’s look doesn’t appeal to me, but the fit is nice and he loves it. Oh no. I do not like homeboy Zayden’s look either. The dress is way too short! I hope he makes it through! Kristina’s look is sleepwear? That’s a no for me, dawg.

Tops & Bottoms

Kristina, Sabrina, Darren, Shantall, Prajjé and Katie are the six tops and bottoms. Everyone else is safe. Yay! Zayden lives to sew another day. Kristina is somehow in the top! I think she used too much of the supplemental material. Okay. The judges are on crack this week. Shantall and her NOT AT ALL A FLORAL PRINT is in the top as well. Prajjé is in the top.

Oh no! Darren is in the bottom. Backstage Aaron says he likes Darren but every challenge he has done a circle skirt. The judges  do not like the print. Or the skirt. Or any of it. Sabrina is also in the bottom with her lady garden disaster. This should send her home. She cries about her little sisters from Afghanistan. Gigi loves it all but the skirt. They say she might have won by leaving the pink shiny skirt off. Katie is in the bottom. Her look is hideous. I hope Darren lives to see another day.

When the judge’s deliberate, Elaine points out that Shantall did not highlight the floral look. The judges seem to really hate Katie’s look. Somehow Shantall wins anyway. I STRONGLY OBJECT!  No! Darren goes home! I’m heartbroken! Darren takes it better than I do.

Next week, looks like an ice skating costume challenge with Johnny Weir as the guest judge.

That Golden Girls nightgown look was AWFUL. I loved Shantall’s outfit but it was definitely not floral by any stretch of the imagination. I was sorry to see Darren leave. Katie’s looks have been terrible from the beginning. In my opinion she should have been the one to go home.

TT, glad you rallied. And yes, set clocks back tonight…..Ya know what I think about this season? I think because of covid, the usual crop of really incredible designers said forget it. So they have the second tier. The flower girl? With the cut outs that look like something my 6 yr old niece would wear? Um, no. This is not designing. This is crafting. The one who won with the microscopic flowers? Why? These designers aren’t good. Period.

I keep wondering why the judges say it’s the best group of Designers they’ve have had on Project Runway. Maybe I’m to fashion challenged to see what they see?

Don’t they say that every year? I think it’s just something they say, because I really don’t see how this group is the “best group ever.”

Interesting because they keep saying, these are the best designers we’ve ever had. And I know they always say that, but they seem to be saying it even more this time.

So far, the only challenge that really impressed me was the Halloween/Haunted one. Many beautiful designs in that one. But the other challenges haven’t wowed me in the same way. Not that I’m a designer or fashionista by any means. I have 2 modes — black pants with a nice-ish top for work, or black cotton jersey pants with t-shirts at home.

Yup. It’s tonight. I liked Shantall’s look, but I didn’t feel like it met the challenge criteria. I felt Praje should’ve one. Also I would’ve sent Katie home. Blaming Christian for your look being in the bottom? That’s as TT would say a No for me dawg

I agree with you on all accounts. How can you win a floral PRINT challenge with only a hint of floral, regardless of the addition of petal sleeves!

I loved Prajje’s dress and thought it should have won. Shantall– that was not a focus on flower print, no matter how much the judges liked it. Total BS that Shantall won. And I liked Darren’s outfit. Guess that’s why I’m not a fashion judge.

I didn’t think Darren even needed to BE in the bottom! Shantall’s looks was GREAT. She’s a good designer BUT IT WASN’T A FLORAL PRINT. For that she should have been in the bottom (but not sent home) as a warning.

I forget how the model choices used to be done, but this random brawling over cards is ridiculous.

I hate when the person who doesn’t follow the brief wins. They call the person brave or daring – when they should be called “OUT”. They show these amazing flower bombs – and the no flower designs wins. it was an insult to Flower Bomb guy.

Based on the theme, the guest judge should have been Drew Barrymore! I was kinda disappointed in Gigi. She was sitting all slouched over, I yelled at the TV “Sit up straight, you are a freaking supermodel!” Am I the only one that noticed that?

I loved Shantell’s design because she did to a very bold but subtle interpretation of a floral print. I like bold but not floral. I also loved the 3 pieces. Not that I wear anything but yoga pants and a T-shirt anymore. Prajje should have won though because he definitely fit that model. Didn’t matter the print, it was gorgeous. Katie should’ve gone home … for blaming Christian. He said it looked circus. It still looked like a circus. Sabrina learned about editing and I think her culture made her cover up more. I thought Christian read your recap last week because he was much better this week. He’s not a teacher, he’s a designer. But I think the problem with this season is that all the designers seem to be focused on their final collection and not on each challenge. That’s the difference I see. I don’t think Tim Gunn would be able to communicate with these people. It’s a different time than season 1,3,5, etc.

For this challenge I thought immediately about Matthew Williamson and his richly floral designs.

Katie’s look was bad, she is so Craft and not Fashion.

Whenever I see Gigi off a runway being interviewed or, like here, I see her more like this super sporty girl being part of a basketball team or something!

My favourite season is still the first one, it was hilarious. Also to see the one when Christian Siriano won is interesting, he complained so much! He really listened to the Tim and the judges though.

I am really enjoying the show so far. To replace a one of a kind like Tim G you needed another one of a kind and that is Christian. I thought he gave a lot of good advice this week. The pictures of Katie’s clothes are beautiful. But on the show everything she does seem forced and for her style she needs it to be natural and free flowing. I loved Shantell’s clothes and her clever flower design. It was original and I think the judges liked that. I think flowers are tough to do for high end fashion and not seen a lot on any runway, —but hey I could be wrong. I think season 3 and 4 were the best in terms of talent and creativity.

That boudoir look–I thought that designer would surely go home because when she first spread out her fabric, it looked like a bloody bandage (that’s a less-gross analogy to what I really thought). And then Eileen said her outfit was a show-stopper or something like that. Must not have translated onto TV–hated it.
I was surprised that most of them basically took a photo of flowers and put them on a colored background. There wasn’t much abstract interpretation except Shantall’s. I loved her look even though it did border on too subtle for the challenge.
Loved Aaron’s yellow and Octavio’s designs.
Bones’ was a black pencil skirt and a piece of fabric tied like a scarf around the top of his model. I didn’t see much design there.
I get psyched when they say it’s a 2-day challenge but everything still seems incredibly rushed. I miss the scenes where there are no models or mentor and the designers are just sitting, idly hemming and talking amongst themselves. You get the nuggets like Santino doing his Tim Gunn impression.

I was really looking forward to this challenge. I love flowers and the last two challenges have produced some spectacular looks. This was a FLOWER BOMB, but not of the good variety.

Prajje’s dress: I do not see why they RAVED, unless they are grading on a curve. We have seen mermaid dresses with a flared bottom and a gathered bottom, both with giant sleeves. NOTHING NEW OR INNOVATIVIVE. The print was very 1980s Laura Ashley.

I agree completely that Kenneth had a HORRENDOUS look — and should have gone home. But, I do not agree with Nina about the print. I thought it was one of the most original prints and I liked his use of color. I will miss him, but he was out of his league.

Katie, when she is good, is very good, IF YOU LIKE THAT STYLE, and there are LEGIONS of women who do, I do not. Check out Marimeko and Oilily for that genre done well. But when she is bad, she is VERY bad. Her skirt was hideous and overdone, but the pants she started with would have been WORSE! And the top was worse than either bottom.

NOW … the MAJOR ISSUE I HAVE is with Shantell’s print. Not that it was barely floral, which is true. BUT, in her ITM interviews she is wearing a blouse in a VERY SIMILAR PRINT. Same harlequin checks, just smaller and in paler versions of her colors. Instead of sprigs of flowers, there are stylized roses. SO … UNLESS SHE DESIGNED that print, she should have been disqualified. The first look at that blouse is 7 minutes into the show.

Thank You so much for the recap TT!
It’s still too early in the season, with so many contestants still in the game, I cannot remember anyone’s name (except Katie).
I LOVED the yellow. Burst of color, bold florals and very well constructed. I think that designer is one of the best!
I agree with most, Katie’s looks are, thus far, cut-and-paste crafty. She must be more talented than she’s been able to show and the judges are giving her chance(s) to stay in the competition.

In my opinion, Katie definitely should have gone home. How bad of a design was it that leather looked like a cheap applique? I also think that Darren’s look would have been much better if he had continued to use the tulle, but Christian told him not to, and Darren listened. Darren did not have the best look, but it was better than the arts & craft look presented by Katie.
