So, I feel like no one is reading these MAFS Houston recaps. /tap tap Is this thing on? This is such a good show I wish it got the attention here that Bravo shows do. I live for the weekends when I have time to catch up on all the great things that are not on Bravo. Anyway, we are at the halfway point on this episode as the couples have been married for a month.
Rachel & Jose
These two started out like gang busters but Jose’s domineering personality has become too much for Rachel. Especially since Jose locked her out of the house on the last episode. She’s all the way over him. They meet to talk. But no one really wants to talk. Jose is lying about “accidentally” locking her out of the house. He knew she had gone outside and locked the damn house. He needs to admit that. Jose is kind of an ass. Rachel needs to run. But instead she takes his half-assed apology. Much later, Jose gives a really good apology and agrees to handle himself better. He seems ready to accept responsibility for his behavior and do the work.

Jose takes Rachel to a baseball diamond for a lovely lunch for their anniversary. Rachel is a huge baseball fan. He also has baseball gloves and baseball team shirts made for them. She’s very touched that he did something for her that reflects he knows her. They play catch and it’s very sweet. Holy crap! What are they eating? Its a ton of meat on a HUGE BONE! I’ve never seen anything like it! Jose relents on the one joint account rule he tried to put into place. He’s starting to loosen up his control a bit. They are back in a good place.
Brett & Ryan
Ryan makes a scavenger hunt in their apartment for Brett. It ends with a gift card. Is that the anniversary celebration? I feel like this is the annual mismatch of the season they do just for drama. Oh no, Brett’s dog has severe kidney failure. I can’t with sick dogs storylines right now. 🙁 Oh no! She had to put her dog down. But off she goes to her one month date with Ryan at the movie theater. They have the whole place to themselves. It’s a fancy theater! I can’t handle the dog conversation at this moment. The “movie” is a highlight reel of their wedding. Smart move by production. Ryan needed this. But, it doesn’t seem to be working. He’s just not that into her.

Myrla & Gil
Gil takes Myrla for some salsa dancing lessons. That’s something that he enjoys. Is THIS the anniversary scene or just an outing? Michaela and Zach join them. Myrla does great with the lesson but Michaela just can’t seem to pick up the steps so she quits. That leaves Zach to dance with the instructor. Who is male. Michaela is being ridiculous. I am starting to understand why some of y’all think Micheala is the problem in her marriage now. She’s petty. She tells Gil that her marriage is at a stalemate. Zach says he thought they were moving forward. She says they are actually moving backward. Apparently, she is pissed that Zach in a previous assignment said he was unable to see their future.

Gil takes Myrla to a winery for their anniversary. Myrla is actually impressed! She points out they have never had an agrument. That is because Gil is the most patient man on the planet. Gil says that the falling in love feelings are coming. Myrla is very happy in the relationship! Well, wonders never cease! But wait! There is more! Gil comes home to a house covered in rose petals and candles! Who is this new Myrla who thinks about her partner! I like her! There is champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! She’s quite proud of her self. Gil gave her a t-shirt that says, “I am everything” and one for him that says “I have everything I need.” So sweet. They get a picture of their vows and a photo album from the experts. Gil got her a pooper scooper for walking the dog. LOL.
Bao & Johnny
One of the great things about this couple is that they are both risk takers who love to try very adventurous activities. First it was parasailing and now for their one month anniversary they are going skydiving for the first time! It was something on Bao’s bucket list and Johnny somewhat reluctantly has agree to do it with her. They both LOVED it. They are so sweet when Johnny isn’t getting cold feet. Afterwards, they go out to eat. Johnny tells Bao that he is 100% in this relationship. Then, Johnny starts rambling about sex and I totally have no idea how to recap that because it makes no sense. Bao talks about needing Johnny to give her a comforting hug sometimes when she is stressed out by work. Bao needs more physical touch.

Johnny goes to visit his friend Kim. He needs advice. He complains about Bao. Kim does a confessional where she says that Johnny needs to stop focusing on the negative. She encourages Johnny to initiate intimacy. Meanwhile Bao talks to her friend about Johnny never initiating romantic activities. She suggests more communication.
Michaela & Zach
After arguing with you guys for months, about who is at fault for the issues of this relationship, I’m now joining the side that says Michaela is the problem here. For their anniversary, Michaela set up a night for them in a recording studio covered in rose petals. Zach plays the baby grand piano. Sadly, I suppose for copyright reasons, we didn’t get to hear it. But, FINALLY these two seem happy. Michaela says she has learned to stop getting in her own way. Zach is learning to see things from other people’s perspective. So they are on again!

Later these two go for a romantic night in a hotel room. They toast with champagne and Zach compliments Michaela for being the one to hold things together. Damn! Then Zach gives Michaela a Tiffany charm bracelet with a charm engraved with their wedding date. Zach has good taste! Now Michaela loves him. LOL. Tiffany can change a lot of things. They went to bed and apparently worked up an appetite because two hours later they were at an all night restaurant getting their grub on. 🙂
Group Dinner
The couples all come together for a fancy dinner to celebrate their one month milestone together. They all talk about where they stand. Zach says he can see himself falling in love with Michaela. Michaela says she is in love with Zach. Racheal says she is in love with Jose. He sort of goes along with it. Ryan is upset that he is not having those feelings. Brett says she is still hopeful and her heart is open. Gil says he is in like but is definitely falling in love with her. Myrla says she made the choice to love her husband.

Bao says she feels like she is still growing “in like” with Johnny. She starts rattling off how she makes gourmet meals, and bakes and does a lot of things to please Johnny. Johnny is visibly pissed. He tells the camera that none of that is true. She’s cooked one time and she plays the victim card too much. Then she starts saying that she has learned Johnny needs her to initiate more in the romance department. WHO SAYS THAT AT A DINNER PARTY?
Johnny looks like he’s wants to shoot her in the face. When it is his turn to speak, he says there is a lot he wants to say. But, he wants to say it to his wife first. Ut oh. I think he might bail on the marriage. Then he sort of bails on the dinner and excuses himself to the bathroom. Even though he just went. He goes outside for some air. Jose goes after him to check on him. He let’s Jose know that Bao is full of shit. We get production footage to back up the fact that she never cooks. Production calls an Uber to get them out of there.
I want to share something but I think it might be a spoiler. So I won’t. But I did hear something that suggests the scenes we see with Bao and Johnny are not what they seem.
Well, you got me hooked on MAFS-so keep the recaps coming! I anxiously await them–it makes sense now that you get caught up on the show on the weekend–so I won’t be waiting for them on Thursday!
Yeah, weekends are when I catch up on most of the non Bravo stuff. And I prefer to watch 90 day and MAFS on the weekends when I don’t have three other shows to get up, so I can enjoy it. This is my source of income so I have to prioritize recaps by the most viewers not by which show I would rather watch first. Plus, on Saturday, I consider that my day off (it’s not really but sorta) so it feels like less of a job I have to complete on a strict deadline, and more like a conversation with a smaller group of friends. 🙂 Way less pressure. I can pause and have lunch or walk the dog. I do enjoy my job, but sometimes it can be very hectic! I’m trying to get up Bravo recaps as fast as I can because the faster the recap the more people want to read and comment. People like to comment as soon as the show ends.
But on Saturdays, I can take my time and enjoy the shows more than I do during a rapid recap. 🙂
Yes I’m like you. I’m Totally ADDICTED. I love this show and it actually is teaching me how to be a better partner. I love your recaps, keep them coming please. You do a great job. We need to get your recap out more so people can see this. Anything I can do to help with that. Let me know if I can share it somewhere. I couldn’t stand Marla in the beginning but I’m starting to like her because she is being much kinder to Gil. He’s an amazing patient man. I adore him. Have a great day.
Thanks Judy, you can always post a link in your social media.
I love this show, and love your recaps you always catch things I’ve missed. Thank you for the recaps
TT, please continue to recap this show. I’m reading your recaps just too lazy to comment on it. I’m happy Myrla is coming around–she knows she has a good thing; she was probably testing him to make sure he was genuine before letting herself really like him–her carefulness came across as bitchy (I’m an optimist under all of this cynicism- LOL)..
I was shocked when Jose gave a genuine apology- especially after he wouldn’t admit he locked her out. He sees his wife is a catch and it’s promising that he is willing t apologize and compromise.. I’m rooting for these two– but he has only ONE more chance.
I am not interested in Johnny and Mao-stay together or don’t –they come with a lot of baggage.
Michaela—I’m looking at her out of the corner of my eye after her behavior at the salsa class. That was extreme and I’m glad Gil pressed her and got to the bottom of her childish, selfish behavior. We’ll see what happens.
Oh I am MOST interested in Bao and Johnny. It will continue to get curiouser and curiouser. I accidently stumbled across something when searching for photos. I REALLY wanted the one of him at the dinner party tearing up the flowers. I feel like I understand the truth in all the other relationships but I do not know what is going on here. Last week we saw them kissing each others navels, and this week we went from making out after skydiving to raging hatred.
I’M FASCINATED.
TT, that’s why I just can’t with Johnny and Bao. They confuse me . But I’ll pay more attention to them now based on your interest in them.
Thank you
I agree that I just don’t get what is going on with not only Bao and Johnny but also Michaela and Zach. There isn’t that much real time that has passed between episodes is there? Yet with both couples one minute they are getting along and the next they are bitchy toward one another. First we see Michaela at salsa dancing refusing to fully participate and unsure about her relationship with Zach and the next she is giddy over her bracelet gift and declaring her love for him at the group dinner.
Both Bao and Johnny were inappropriate at the group dinner. Who calls out their new husband in front of the group the way Bao did? If she wanted to be open with the group she could have said something more tactfully. I could see Johnny being upset that she was critical of him in public, but I didn’t totally get his anger. He was livid that Bao was lying about things such as cooking gourmet meals but didn’t we see footage of her doing just that? He was right about one thing when he said he had a lot to say but would do so in private. It just looked like he was having a temper tantrum in public though. He could have controlled himself in front of the other couples or made a joke to save face.
I do like Gil. It’s funny how he has become the moderator for the group and keeps asking the couples probing questions. I guess that could be seen as cute or intrusive. It seems like he is doing what the experts should be doing more of.
The show should allow couples such as Brett and Ryan to opt out gracefully before decision day. They just don’t click and it is doubtful a few more weeks will make any difference. Why didn’t he go with her when she took the dog to the vet? Did she say he was at the gym? Even a friend would drop everything to go with her and help her through such a difficult time. Is it me, or does it seem like they are not living together full time? Also, did production tell him to rent the theater to show the wedding video? We saw one of last season’s couples do the same thing only the venue wasn’t a theater but maybe a restaurant.
Production handles all of the “special dates” they supposed set up for each other. The newlyweds just go where they are told. They don’t choose ANY of the dates.
Yes TT I AGREE WITH YOU. There relationship has me so curious of what is going on. I can’t wait to see this week’s. It can’t come fast enough. Johnny liked like a tomatoe his face was so red I thought he was going to explode. I thought this… maybe Bao is saying that’s the things she wants to do and she always did those things and she is expressing it as she is doing it now. Maybe she is using the wrong words like I do these things… “meaning” that what she always did get whole life and Johnny thinks she means she is doing this things now. I don’t see her as a compulsive last so I how she explains what she actually means by all those things she said at the table. I feel really bad for Brett she is in love with Ryan and I how he doesn’t hurt her. TT I love your recaps. You are awesome. Keep them coming.
Watching for sure, and appreciate the updates:)
Thanks Jessica. There are some shows on this site like Big Brother, Survivor, MAFS, 90 Day Fiance where it is a nice little intimate group of us. I hope you will chime in. I’m generally way nicer in these smaller group settings. 🙂
TT you’re doing a great job recapping all these shows. I watch every single one you mentioned along with a few others. I think Bao and Johnny have unnecessary drama. He reminds me of the character Seinfeld. All he ever does is focus on what bothers him and then it becomes overwhelming. Michaela has an anger problem .. period.
TT, excellent recap. Everything was exactly how I feel! Except that bao is never going to be with anyone until she stops lying and stops being such a damn victim. How can Johnny stand being around this. She’s horrible. That salsa dancing scene? What’s wrong with michela for not even trying????? I bet NONE of these people make it. Ryan looks like he can’t stand Brett. I think this show needs better psychologists…
I read something as well about J and B. I am interested in seeing how it plays out.
The recaps are excellent. Please don’t stop. 😊
Well the ads for the season show Johnny at the decision filming… so I doubt he leaves for good next week. Although Chris was there on the Atlanta season. So who knows.
Watching Bao emasculated Johnny while continuing her “gourmet meal” lie, was painful.
I kinda hope you heard what the audience is figuring out. Bao isn’t nearly as innocent as she seemed. She admitted to get friend that she only cooked once and has no time to bake but continuously feels the cast that she cooks regularly.
But. Maybe they’re a happy couple and doing all this for the show…but dang. Embarrassing Johnny was unnecessary.
Why did she lie like that? I have to pay better attention to Johhny and Bao. She is sabotaging the relationship. Is she still upset about the time he rejected her in college years ago?
Please keep recapping TT. Life has been so busy lately that I don’t have time to watch and I depend on you for the info. Thanks for that! I may not comment as much but I’m reading.
I’m totally reading your stuff and watching. I love your point of view. Sometimes you point out things I completely missed. Love your content!
Johnny is conceited, Bao is not the “pretty” girl type he normally dates. His disgust at her “childish talk” or picking at her appearance. Him and Ryan never should have gone on this. The matchmakers look inside more than outside. No blonde bimbo types for Ryan or a “pretty girl” for Johnny. Both ladies are a good fit on paper only.
I don’t buy that fake apology from Jose. He intentionally set out to hurt her. He is not a good man. He wants control a 1950’s type submissive. Rachel is not that type. I loved how she stood up for herself! She threw down her boundaries and hard no’s. Rooting for this couple to bust.
Nooooo don’t stop recapping, TT! You’re the one who got me into the show in the first place! I came on just to see what you thought about Zach now….I was with you that he’s either got a side piece or on drugs. But now I”m not so sure, he actually does seem more & more sincere. Dying to hear the scoop you have on Johnny & Bao & how it might not be as it seems!
I watch too, please do not stop recapping 🙂
I am SUPER curious what you found out about J & B! I really do want Myrla/Gil to work out.
I get strange vibes from Jose but can’t put my finger on what exactly. I am happy that Rachel verbalizes how she feels about him (having controlling tendencies etc).
Brett wants to be wanted by her husband so badly but I don’t see that happening. It sometimes seems that he is not down with trying anymore.
Michaela & Zach – I mean…I go back and forth on who is more at fault for their issues.
Can’t wait for next week!!!
I’m watching and reading along too! I just haven’t commented because so far this season is kind of a snore for me so I haven’t had much to say. But now I’ll keep a better eye on Johnny and Bao. So curious what the potential spoiler about them is, I tried to snoop around a little but I didn’t see anything juicy.
I have phased out all the Bravo shows for the shrieking self-involvement, the drunken sloppiness, and the fake story lines of inane women. MAFS is interesting more from a clinical standpoint because it shows what is wrong with so many relationships. The UK and New Zealand versions are much better and the Aussie version would be if all the women had not gone to the same cosmetic surgeon.
Yes I’m with you. I don’t watch those Bravo shows. They are so fake and there is too much drunk moments and just pure sloppiness. I don’t like these type of shows. But I love MAFS, 90 Day Fiance, all of them. I love The Family Chantel, it’s coming on tonight at 8 or 9pm est. I love Darcy and Stacy, great and funny show. They crack me up. Watch the ones I just mentioned they are great.
I cannot get into the shows like the “I love a momma’s boy” because this is just 100% wrong and pure discusting. I could never ever go to my sons honeymoon, WRONG. I don’t like how the one mother is always telling her son how sexy he looks and she is always touching his arms and chest and it creeps me out. They need to take this show off completely.
I can’t wait for the next recap TT. Thank you! 😊
I love your recaps! In fact, I read them before I watch. MAFS is one of my favorite shows. Please continue recapping!!
As far as Zach and Michaela are concerned, she does get in her own way. Sometimes I believe she likes the idea of being married but doesn’t want to put the work in to making it work!!! Besides Zach is fine!!!!
Jose and Rachael need to chill as well, especially Jose. He has a wife now, not a child and he needs to treat her accordingly. Rachel should relax.
I feel bad for Brett, but one of the experts did tell himthat some of his expectations and the “ feelings” he is suppose to have is unrealistic! Give the girl a chance and just let things flow!!!!
Your commentary on these shows are so good, I don’t even watch this show, but I’m fully invested in what happens. I think the only show I don’t read about is your Big Brother recaps. I used to watch it, but for some reason I didn’t find it entertaining. Maybe it’s just a”Me not turning the channel” thing. LOL
That meat Rachel had in her plate looks like it came from the Flintstones. I wondered what animal was that from
That was a Tomahawk steak – a trendy new thing.
That was NOT a Tomahawk steak. While both are big, this looked like more of a dinosaur rib and not a Tomahawk. It was like something from the Flintstones.
My teenage son has gotten into watching MAFS with me, and we are a few episodes behind. While I haven’t watched yet, smoked beef ribs (often called “dino” ribs for the reasons you described) are quite a thing at many BBQ places in TX. Pinkerton’s in Houston is quite famous for them.
