I’m cooking and listening to the victim statements given behind George Floyd’s family. It’s just heartbreaking. I hope the families will be satisfied by whatever sentence the judge hands down today for Derek Chauvin. I wish for closure for this family who has spent an entire year with the death of their beloved family member popping up on social media and television. They had to grieve publicly. Their pain is unimaginable. The state is of course asking for the maximum sentence. They discuss four aggravating happens. Even one aggravating factor is enough to double the maximum sentence allowed. They have four. I wonder if any of this has an effect on the judge. Does he already know what he is going to sentence Derek Chauvin to?

Also, I am way behind so the verdict may already be out there. Derek’s mother is now pleading for the life of her son. She can barely speak. Can you imagine having to do this? I feel sorry for her. She says he is not a racist. Also, she says Derek Chauvin is a loving and caring man. He didn’t just murder someone. He destroyed his mother’s life. She says she and his father will probably be dead when he gets out. She says that she has read numerous letters from people around the world who believe in his innocence. Who the hell are those people? It’s hard to read his emotions with a mask on.
Derek Chauvin’s attorney says that he has received thousands of emails, letters and phone calls in support of Derek Chauvin. That’s kind of terrifying. I’m going to fast forward through this. The Derek Chauvin gives his condolences to the Floyd family. He says that he has other legal matters that proclude his from speaking about the case.
Derek Chauvin Was Sentenced To 270 Months!
The judge is back! Here we go! The judge says he has a 22 page memorandum he will attach to the sentencing decree. So he is going to only make a brief statement and let the memorandum explain how he arrived at his sentence. So yes, he knew his sentence before this hearing began. The judge recognizes the pain of the Floyd family. He stresses that he followed the law and not the court of public opinion. He was sentenced to 22.5 years. I think that is reasonable. He is 45 years old. The judge based is sentence on his abuse of authority and cruelty. He is not allowed to own guns or ammunition for the remainder of his life. Derek Chauvin seems shocked.
The crowd outside seems like they don’t think that is enough. What do you think? I’m going to post this now. And add more in comments when the family speaks.
Oh Lord, here comes Al Sharpton and Ben Crump. I’d be shocked if Phaedra didn’t complete the triad of stupid. Al says that the the sentence is the longest sentence they have ever gotten. But, it’s still not enough.
Al just introduced Ben Crump saying that he has been with the family, even when the cameras were not there. SMH. Al and Ben both speak before they let the Floyd family speak, because they have never seen a camera they didn’t love.
Al Sharpton and Ben Crump are the worst!
Let the family speak and then leave them alone!
Sharpton, who grew up in Queens and Brooklyn, dropped out of Brooklyn College in 1975 and didn’t attend a seminary. He preached his first sermon when he was 4 years old, was ordained when he was 10 and was called the “Wonderboy” preacher before he toured with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.
Like it or not, the family likes Crump and Sharpton, and I’ve read somewhere that Crump is actually a cousin of Mr. Floyd.
They’ve got a lot of people fooled, and always have. Couple of charlatans.
I’m there I justice for the family but I am tired of the two ambulance chasers
I meant I am happy there is justice for the family
He got less time than I hoped for but more than I expected. I have no sympathy for his mom who cried that she will be dead by the time her son gets out of prison. Floyd’s family will never see him again.
I have sympathy for his mom. She didn’t do anything.
I have sympathy for the mother as well. As a mom, my life would be destroyed. This is not her fault
I have very little sympathy for his mother. She raised a racist and doesn’t see that he did anything wrong by murdering George Floyd. She is part of the problem here. Sorry, not sorry.
Agreed. Zero sympathy for the mom. She didn’t even acknowledge Floyd’s family and what they are going through. She will be able to see her son. He is where he belongs and she can visit and have phone calls. Where was her empathy for the family when she got up there to speak. Next
I totally get how you feel, and basically agree. But, it has to be hard to admit you raised a son to be a racist, murderous asshole. She’s clearly in denial. It was clear that Derek destroying his mother was pretty much the only thing he regrets.
The other three officers trial was moved to March 2022 and the four Federal cases against the officers are not currently scheduled. The Judge Cahill is hoping for plea deals to lesson the trauma to the family about having to continue to testify and attend court proceedings.
I have no sympathy for the mom. She saw the same video we did.
She claims not to be a racist. In the next breath, she tells the judge about all the cards and letters of support she has received from her new racist friends all over the country,
Al Sharpton owes tons of money to hotels around the country. He does have a mistress he travels with? I am more interested in the collapsed condos in Florida.
Al Sharpton according to Wikipedia attended Brooklyn College but no mention of graduating. He is not a lawyer. He’s an activist. And yes, he’s ridiculous.
I can’t stand him since the whole Tawana Brawley bullshitery!
Umm I can’t stand him but he travels with his long term girlfriend. I worked at a hotel he frequents. So no mistress that I’ve seen.
22.5 is not enough for murder, IMO, but it is a step in the right direction.
Can someone make Ben STFU so we can get to the actual attorneys who won this case?! Or the family. Not these political pundits who had nothing to do with this trial. Even after he finally shut up, two more Floyd Family attorneys spoke how many do they have? Finally the brother speaks. He basically restates his victim impact statement. He thanks the protests that were literally worldwide. He tells Derek Chavin’s mom that he loves her. He’s a very classy guy for that. Philonise Floyd says all lives matter. He’s way more eloquent that Ben and Al. Ben goes right back to the microphone to ramble on some more while the other brother of George Floyd patiently waits to be allowed to speak. Ben still rambles on.
Terrence, his other brother speaks briefly and basically says the fight can’t stop now. George Floyd’s nephew speaks next. He says 22.5 years is not enough. The family received a life sentence. He is not celebrating the sentence but he says that he will celebrate. The conviction. Next up is George Floyd’s other brother Rodney. He says the sentence is a slap on the wrist. He encourages people to get out and vote.
Oh Look Ben is back rambling Derek still has Federal Charges against him and they are hoping for a life sentence.
In other sort of off topic but not news. The Justice Department is suing the state of Georgia for our racist voting laws, and I am here for it!
Not enough time. He can parole out in 15 years. He will be 60. This is unacceptable and sad that we have to be “happy” with it because it’s more than anyone has received before. And the only reason we are getting this is because of the brave witness who filmed this horrible murder! There are black people serving more time for first time and non violent drug offenses. As his brother stated, happy with conviction but unhappy with sentence.
Yay for GA DOJ! I had hoped for the maximum but given that he will likely be in solitary (for his own protection), it’s enough. I do have sympathy for the mother. Ben and Al are trying me!! Let the family speak! I agree his brother was eloquent.
George Floyd did not die in vain. He galvanized a nation. Thanks, Tamara, I appreciate your coverage.
Y’all! Black Twitter is dragging the HOLY HELL out of Van Jones right now!
Good.
I meant I am happy there’s justice for the family.
Not enough time, he will be out way too soon. He will probably be in protective custody and have it easier than being in general population.
My understanding is that he has been and will continue to be in solitary. He cannot mix with the gen pop.
I would have liked to see more time but I am glad he didn’t off. The feds will get him.
I’m sorry but that was cruel what he did to George Floyd. Very cruel.
