Tonight is finale night of Mare of Easttown. And I am so stoked. At first I thought I was going to fall asleep before watching but I got a second wind somehow. I’m probably not going to have a lot to say about this show here. But, I feel like we are going to want to say a lot in comments. If you haven’t watched the show, and you have HBO then go binge it, then join us in comments. Sadly, it is only seven episodes. I can’t believe Kate Winslet did this. But I am so happy she did! It’s really good.
It’s still about thirty minutes to the finale. But, I’m going to go ahead and put this up.
I’m obsessed with this show. I just finished the finale and there were so many twists and turns that I couldn’t figure out who the killers was. I’m looking forward to season 2 and I’ve always been a Kate Winslet fan.
Correction, im watching the finale now, it’s still on.
Correction, im watching the finale now, it’s still on.
There isn’t going to be a season 2
Well here we go. I must admit I’m really not smart enough for this show. There are lots of things I do not understand. Like why is the police chief trying to get Mare on the phone? I used to be way smarter than this. But my brain is mush.
I’m clearly slow and I don’t really get how John and Billy fit into anything. I really need someone to explain shows like this to me. Perhaps it is a short attention span? I thought it was going to be Mare’s ex husband. I’m going to watch the whole thing again. I’m so confused. Is this the priest guy she is talking to now? I am so confused.
Damn, Mare is going to end up raising a baby that is not related to her? And probably lose the one who is? I am not smart enough for this show. How did John get Billy to admit to murder? It’s all so crazy.
Why do I think that everyone is going to kill themselves?
I am just going to post this because I have no idea what is happening and none of it is good.
Bof you’re not slow at all, it’s a lot to digest. He is trying to get Mare on the phone because one of the brothers had confessed to killing Erin ( the dead girl found in the woods). Mare is not going to end up raising Erins baby, the brothers wife is. Mare is raising her sons son. Her son committed suicide. I think Billy was going through a lot and just said F it. But, to be honest, I don’t think John killed Erin, it was his wife. Did you catch when mare was watching the video of the confession and he claimed he didn’t remember what gun he used? I may be wrong about that one. I knew it wasn’t going to be her ex, I thought it was the priest, but I was wrong.
I literally just started watching this yesterday and got two episodes in. I’m at where the young woman was murdered, her father just killed the guy he thought did it (who he thought was the father of her baby), but then it was intimated that Mare’s ex husband Frank was actually the father of that baby (and he had just gotten engaged). So now of course I’m thinking he was behind the killing (cuz he just got engaged). But it seems like it will twist again based on these comments. Gonna have to binge more today to catch up.
Well this is depressing. 🙁
OMG this is way heavier than I’d like.
So John is NOT THE KILLER? Didn’t he confess? WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? I don’t get the whole thing. Clearly I am a moron. None of this makes sense to me. I’m just not smart enough for this show.
God, you are confused. It was not John. It was John and Lori’s high school son Ryan. John confessed to protect Ryan. Lori found out after the fact but lied to Mare. The old guys whos wife died…and that they called Mare all the time….was a cop. He had a gun out in his shed. Ryan mowed his lawn. He took the gun and threatened Erin. Since John had other affairs he wanted Erin to stop. They fought and Erin was shot. Since John was DJs dad, Lori ended up with the kid. Ryan went to Juvenile Detention.
And the mother of Mare’s grandchild started using drugs again. She admitted herself back to rehab. So Mare still has the kid.
Did anyone catch that the mother of Mare’s grandchild was played by Sosi Bacon, the daughter of Kyra Sedgewick & Kevin Bacon?
If by “confused” you mean dumb as a sack of bricks, then yeah. I had no idea what was going on the the last two episodes. I blame recapping Bravo crap for the last decade or so. I literally could not follow this.
For once, no argument here ! .
Okay, I am over this whole show.
Ohhh I didn’t know about this show. I am def going to binge it tomorrow.
What an ending! The sins of the father… talk about trans-generational trauma. Kate Winslett is such a pleasure to watch. And also the actress who plays her mother. I looked forward every Sunday to another episode. Now what?
That is the FAB Jean Smart, who used to be on Designing Women.
This show was filmed where I grew up!
I’m rewatching now. It’s making more sense. Maybe I had too much wine before. lol
I swear it is like watching it for the first time. I literally remember none of this.
I literally don’t know what I watched last night but it was not this.
What an ending.
I didn’t watch this show but your comments are EVERYTHING!!!! I know exactly how you feel but not over shows … all of life in general. The Bravo comment made me snort. I can’t get enough of you!!
Okay something is wrong with me. I can’t remember anything. I’m watching Pose and I guess it is a new episode but I remember not liking the last one. My brain is not working.
I’m late to the game with streaming channels, but am finding that for the heavier, better quality shows on these channels, it’s better if I watch during the afternoon on weekends, because if I have even a glass of wine in the evening, I don’t follow them as well. I can have brainless Bravo on in the background at night, while sipping a glass and mindlessly surfing the net.
Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! If Kate winslet doesn’t sweep awards season something is wrong. When John said he didn’t know what kind of gun it was, I knew it was Ryan and he was just protecting him by saying he did it. The acting was so freaking good. Kevin bacons daughter was mares addicted daughter in law by the way. I’m sad that this is just one season. I want more!
Speaking of Kevin Bacon. Have you seen City on a Hill ? (SHO) Kevin Bacon plays an FBI agent And he is the sleaziest, corrupt and arrogant guy you have ever seen. He does such a great job.
No, but I’ll check it out!
Even if you don’t watch the whole series just check out Kevin Bacon. He is such a scheming bastard.
Really? I didnt realize she was a actress. That bathtub scene with her soon was so stressful!
I’ve just finished it. I’ve watched so many shows the last year that I enjoy watching then hate the ending. Not this one. Lots of twists and turns and a satisfying ending. Kate Winslet was wonderful, so nice to see her play her age and no glamour.
Any other Aussies here? I kept thinking how much she looks like Claudia Karvan.
Have you watched The Gloaming? Set in Tasmania. It looks really beautiful. It gets to be kind of a lot at the end, but I do not want to spoil it.
The entire Mare series was believable. The only “weirdness” was the people and their foibles. Not all fake supernatural like Nancy Drew. These overly supernatural sci-fi things are a lazy way to nit develop characters.
Lori dropping to the kitchen floor was Oscar worthy. This actress was outstanding. Imagine losing your son to a charge of murder, raising your husbands illegitimate baby….great series.
When Lori had the baby at the Drs she was looking at the baby really weird. I was really afraid she was going to do something to him. She had been through so much shit. Then to have the baby to raise. When the husband asked her to take him, she should have kicked in the dick first.
YES!!!!! That was such a heartbreaking moment.
I liked it until I didn’t. I am over shows that use Christ’s name in vain SO much you cannot but help notice it. People don’t really talk like that but it is put on so much that it is hard to ignore. I rarely comment on things like that because there is no tolerance for it but it’s just too much. It’s not about forcing respect but about allowing people something sacred not to be abused for entertainment.
Also the fact the child turns out to be a killer just felt that it was pushing every ugly thing they could: dead naked girl check. Child killer check.
My views.
It totally did not notice it. And you should probably stop watching TV and pray for yourself more. And moreso to you false prophet Trump. We don’t tolerate idiots here.
GOD DAMN THE TRUMPSTER FOOLS WHO ARE TRYING TO KILL OUR DEMOCRACY AND WHO ATTACKED OUR CONGRESS. FUCK OFF AND DIE,THESE ARE NOT PEOPLE WHO WORSHIP GOD. THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO CAN BARELY READ AND WORSHIP A REALITY TV HOST. MORONS.
Tamara I’m not a Trump supporter or even American. It was my perspective on what jumped out at me. But it’s your site so I won’t comment again
Okay.
Your views are odd. Incest and adultery are okay but saying Christ is what upsets you? People say it all the time. Not sure what bubble you live in but its pretty common.
J, I thought the same when she was in the doctor’s office. The boy that played Ryan was brilliant. “Mare knows……” I know Mare did the right thing, but letting Ryan get away with it wouldn’t have been the worst choice. Honestly, I would have turned the other way. Don’t judge.
Good, thought it was just me. Since so much bad happened I thought she would hurt the baby. No judgement. You had to feel bad for Ryan. Let the dad take the heat. It was his fault anyway. Actually, the whole cast was really good. I loved Jean Smart the mom. She did a great job and added some levity to a very serious show.
I can see that. John should have taken the fall.
I still don’t get a lot, like why John made Billy confess when he in fact knew he didn’t do it.
My theory….The cops including Mare thought that Billy killed Erin. John was going to kill Billy when they were out fishing. Make it look like suicide. That way the blame would be on Billy and not Ryan or John. Mare stopped them. Then John tried to shoot himself but Billy stopped him. Ryan ( son ) had John pick him up after he killed Erin. So John knew the whole time who killed her.
Billy was seen as a drunk, single, without a family, etc. He was expendable in John’s eyes…even though he helped move the body to cover for his nephew and brother.
Not me. Ryan would have had to live with what he did and it wouldn’t have ended well. He needs to pay for what he did or it will eat him alive. I’m sure there was a deal made where he would get out at 18.
I’m out there pulling weeds and K, I was having a conversation with myself about this. I agree. Family secret would destroy him and Lori. He came clean. With therapy he can move forward instead of being stuck…like Mare who wasnt able to go to the attic. Lesson there for all…
How do you slam a kid with the lunch tray in the school cafeteria and not get expelled? The kid did deserve it. Just dawned on me that Ryans sister was the bully’s target.
I think that scene was foreshadowing to show that Ryan was capable of violence to protect his family. It’s a writer’s technique that you seldom recognize until the end is revealed. I didn’t catch it at the time, just wondered why the scene was there.
Great observation, Miz. I thought it was a reaction to his pent up anger from killing Erin.
Mary, the reason I thought it was foreshadowing is that if the scene hadn’t been there, the audience might have felt cheated afterward, that the writers had just pulled the solution to the mystery out of their derrieres, & that would not have been fair. To be fully satisfied, the mystery viewer or reader must feel that if she didn’t solve it correctly herself, at least she COULD have if only she had caught the bread crumb clues left by the writer. The lunchroom violence was a great clue because it would have been very reasonable at the time the scene was viewed to think what a good brother to have defended his sister, albeit that the boy carried the beating too far. Even given the degree of violence, the viewer might think, as I did, that this incident had only been the culmination of a series of acts against a dear innocent girl who had been portrayed as overly polite. In truth & in retrospect, the entire script was almost a scientific formula for a mystery, replete with false leads & clues, the viewer constantly leaping ahead with a personal solution, only to realize it was surely too soon to solve the mystery with several episodes left. The one false lead that I didn’t understand or missed concluding was when Mare realized Billy had been at the reunion & he started acting guilty when she asked him about it. He then quickly made an excuse & left & she pointedly stared at his half-empty beer bottle. If she had his DNA tested from the bottle I missed it, & if she did she’d have discovered he was closely related via the Y chromosome (father) to Erin’s child, but was NOT the father. Did I miss something?
I would have wanted to just turn a blind eye to Ryan, knowing his father (who started the whole mess) was paying for Erin losing her life but I don’t think I could actually go through with keeping that secret. I cried in the finale. The writing was so good. The acting was so good. Kate Winslet and Julianne Nicholson deserve all the awards. Jean Smart was great too. All of them, really. I thought the first two episodes dragged on a little but it definitely sucked me in and I was so pleased with the series.
I remember the beer bottle scene. No mention of it afterwards. Maybe to throw us off.
I think they showed the beer bottle because it was full and cold. Why would he just open a beer have say 1 max 2 sips and then jump up and have to leave … just a breadcrumb to get us to think it was Billy.
Billy acting guilty wasn’t an act, he was guilty because he helped cover up the crime. Hope that makes sense 🙂
