I noticed this week that RuPaul’s Drag Race is only an hour rather than 90 minutes plus half an hour of Untucked. It looks like filming may stop at least for a bit. We start with scenes of the entire studio being disinfected. Then, my least favorite queen this season, Kandy Muse comes in with all the PPE saying she has been tested and she’s good to go and ready to give us all the tea.
It looks like a filler episodes of sorts about filming during the pandemic. The show starts from the very beginning of casting. Tamisha Iman, an Atlanta girl, was particularly concerned about the virus because of his cancer situation. She did the whole show with a colostomy bag and no one knew. The queens were all very concerned about how they were going to support themselves. Then the NY legendary Drag Queen, Mona Foot, died of Covid at the end of April. That shook everyone up.
Two Queens Test Positive For Covid
Kandy Muse tested positive for Covid. She thinks she got it at her last packed show. Olivia Lux tested positive for Covid. The other queens started doing drag online and hoped to brings some levity to the world while staying prepared for Drag Queens if it even happened. Then the murder of George Floyd happened. 2020 just kept getting worse. But then, they got the call from Drag Race saying they are on Season 13. But how do they prepare for the show during the pandemic?

Apparently, the world was out of wigs. Fabric was hard to find. Even shoes were hard to come by. Kahmora also had to prepare his family who didn’t know she was a drag queen. Elliott with two t’s mom was very supportive. Then they all had to quarantine in LA for a couple weeks. All in separate rooms. Many struggles with lonliness. They were all so happy to be able to touch other humans and have people to talk to. They were all tested three times a week, with the old way up the nose tests. Production was still in hazmat suits and wore masks and shields.
The Queens Struggle With Lack Of Information On Their Loved Ones
At night they all went back to their separate hotel rooms. They had no Internet or phone. The TV channels were very limited, mostly news and sports. So they were getting a lot of panemic news each night and things were getting worse and worse. They were very worried about their families. Ru spent a lot of time chatting with the girls in groups of two while social distancing. It was just random funny conversations meant to keep their spirits up.

The out of drag interviews were filmed basically over Zoom. This made the queens feel a bit removed from humans at a time they are spilling their guts. There were also technical issues. But, production was really kind to the girls. After each final event on stage, they had to walk outside in full drag to get to the backstage filming area and it was a parade every time with production outside clapping for them all. I’m so sad Tamisha Iman went home so early. I love her.
They were all really OH FUCK. I just typed about Tamisha and the very next scene she has tested positive for Covid. Thankfully, she didn’t have any symptoms at all. Perhaps it was all the chemo she’s had?
Next week the real episodes are back, with Snatch Game, AKA the best episode of every season.
I recorded the episode and am watching it right now. Its actually one of the seasons I’ve really gotten in to
I actually really enjoyed this episode. I had wondered during what time frame this season was filmed so it answered those questions for me. I have a real appreciation for everyone’s outfits, after realizing there was a serious wig and fabric shortage. I can understand how they valued “the human touch” after being along for so long and being shut in their rooms when filming was done.
This is one of my favorite shows. I always look forward to getting to know the girls. I recommend it to all my friends. And pass on Ru’s advice about self-love and respect.
It was sad to watch Iman sashay away. I personally thought she won that lip sync. These ladies deserve all the love for sacrificing so much to entertain us during this heartbreaking pandemic. I am looking forward to Snatch Game. Hopefully Rose will shine again. I really enjoyed her performance last week. Although her outfit was orange, not yellow.
In the beginning when the divided the group into basically winners and losers, I thought the WRONG person “WON” the lipsync almost every time.
In that first round, Denali vs. Lala Ri, I was shocked Denali lost in those ice skates. I was nervous she would hurt herself or Ms Lala. In my opinion, Denali was the better performer in that round.
Hell I thought they picked the winner by what group they wanted them placed. ?
huh?
PS I don’t know why this went to moderation. It just did?
I think I f’d up my email address 🙄
The UK version was even more impactful to me. They had to stop mid filming and ended up having a 7 month break. Wow presents is how I watch. Thursday’s is Awesome.
I loved that they explained how they made it work. I found it very interesting but sad. I didn’t realize how isolated they were prior to filming. I assumed that they were quarantining together. No clue why I thought that.
I thought the same thing. Even after they all passed the tests and quarantined they still had to go to a hotel room alone with no contact with the outside world, no news and worry about their families.
