Open Forum: Just An Irish Guy, His Dog And His Cello

February 13, 2021 by tamaratattles 19 Comments

Patrick Dexter plays his cello in Ireland to try to support himself and his dog on lockdown. I thought it might be a nice Saturday morning post. And a way for us all to see there is still beauty out there. I just watched the full performance on Youtube. Another Patrick (it is Ireland after all) famous Irish Poet Patrick Kavanagh wrote the poem that was turned into a song called On Ragland Road. (You can read about that here).  There is a site about him and the link takes to a less than two minute video about the woman who inspired the lyrics If you’d like to throw Patrick Dexter a few bucks and have access to his music, “Patrick Dexter @patrickdextervc Help him to continue to share music like this from his home by going to: http://patreon.com/patrickdexter where you can have access to all his music to listen to/ download.

‘On Raglan Road’ was written by Patrick Kavanagh in 1946. The poem was originally published as ‘Dark Haired Miriam Ran Away’ and was written about his unrequited love for Hilda Moriarty. The poem has been recorded in song by many artists including Luke Kelly, Van Morrison and Sinéad O’Connor.

A poem by Patrick Kavanagh set to music by Luke Kelly of the Dubliners using the 17th century Irish harp tune ‘The Dawning of the Day’ Lyrics
On Raglan Road of an autumn day
I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare
That I might one day rue
I saw the danger, and I passed Along the enchanted way
And I said, “Let grief be a falling leaf At the dawning of the day”
On Grafton Street in November
We tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen
The worth of passions pledged
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts
And I not making hay
Oh, I loved too much and by such,
by such Is happiness thrown away
I gave her gifts of the mind
I gave her the secret sign
That’s known to the artists who have known
The true gods of sound and stone.
And word and tint without stint
I gave her poems to say
With her own name there and her own dark hair
Like clouds over fields of May
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet
I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly
My reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should
A creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay
He’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.
Okay, so maybe the cello is a bit depressing. But still… it’s beautiful 🙂

On Raglan Road. Thank you @camanpour for requesting this beautiful Irish song, it was such a pleasure to chat to you today pic.twitter.com/YavBEDBgy6

You can follow him on Twitter or throw him a few bucks on Patreon here.  I hope you enjoyed this musical interlude. It is past my bedtime ( I know, I know I can’t get it together) and it is pouring rain here until at least Wednesday. So it’s my party and I’ll sleep when I want to. Or something like that.

Tell me all about your Valentine’s plans or your weekend in comments. xo ~tt

Nice TT…I love Van Morrison’s version. Just able to get out after ice storm and now expecting snow storm Monday. I went to Kroger and liquor store and catching up on my DVR. Edibles may or may not be involved ?. I watched some of the first look of 90 day this morning. Natalie is just really really bat shit crazy. So is JoviS chick. Why do these women act so privileged. Few fries short of a happy meal.

All my grandparents were born in Ireland, and I’ve been there twice. Absolutely beautiful scenery and people. I received a surprise Valentines bouquet of roses from an old friend who is wooing me from RI. Very sweet and totally unexpected! My night involves a movie and a fattie.

I’m convinced that all those of Irish blood are poets (or have poetic souls). At least that’s what I’d like to think. I’ve never seen or heard this poem; thank you for another beautiful gift.

The souls of the Irish are Artists. Ate the very least they are crafting a fine bit of Blarney.

My dad was stationed in Scotland during Korean War and my sister and brother grew up there and my parents loved everything about it. Sadly I was born once they got back to Chicago. I know it’s not Ireland, but it’s the next country and it’s very much alike. After they both died and I was going through all their stuff (FUCKING HEARTBREAKING BTW) I found a diary my mom kept about their time there. These are things life are all about. Meanwhile, not doing much here for Valentines Day. We ordered out for ribs and bbq chicken tonight so that’s gonna tide us over till tomorrow night so there’s that. Watched first look of 90 day and I gotta tell ya, that Natalie, something is off with her. Is it the eyes? Her mouth that doesn’t open when she talks? I can’t put my finger on it. I find the comments from Jovi’s mom re: ALL women from Ukraine want to come to US idiotic which is why Yara came back with “that’s like saying we think all American’s are stupid” I was glad she said that. So many stereotypes that just should’t be repeated. Why not judge the person on THAT one person and not an entire country on a few? That’s like reverting back to all the stereotypes on All In The Family with Archie Bunker. And thanks to that wonderful Dr. Obeng in LA, GG girl got the GG out of her hair. He’s pretty well known, he didn’t do this for publicity but what a kind man.

Wow, that is really cool about your mother’s diary. I’m sorry that I just said that like a butthole. What I meant to say, was, I would love to read any kind of diary from either of my parents. It is really nice that you have some documentation from your mom about her life.

I grabbed a couple of diaries of Mother’s from the 1940s. I don’t think I read them all. Maybe I will soon it was too soon then. Daddy was off to or just back from his WWII where he was one of the first engineers to work with RADAR. I basically to them so no one else could/would. Actually, I might have found them before she died. When no one was paying attention to the library.

I’m not going to listen right now – cello music makes me cry at the moment.

Snowed like CRAZY last night. Probably over a foot in places (we have winters in the PNW where we don’t have any, and when we do, it is usually just a few inches).

So, made clam chowder for dinner last night. Yum! Today, I furiously peeled a bunch of turnips and carrots for snacks while watching and listening to the trial. (Also made a low call dip). This is for when the nervous munchies hit later if I watch or read the news.

Did some laundry in case the power goes out. It is melting enough in the sunshine to get the snow off of all the trees although more snow is due tonight (this is a good thing, because the trees can get so weighed down with snow, etc. that can cause power outages. No wind which is also a good thing)

Gonna also keep on watching Great British Bake Off tonight, I think, if I don’t fall asleep on the couch.

I keep meaning to call my dealership and have them pick mine up to fix all the things. I’ve mentioned before I paid cash for a new Honda Civic in 2007. It has less the 30K miles on it. I’m literally the little old lady from Pasedena. I think I need new front brakes, and definately want a new air cabin filter. and God only knows what else. I just need to pick a time when I have enough wine to last a couple of days. lol.

I’ve been considering shipping this car, the first one I never even named. but I somehow call The Grey Ghost now. It will cost thousands of dollars to ship to South America where I may end up landing… but it would be less expensive than buying a used car. And by God she deserves to go somewhere other than the Publix. lol.

There is a man in the neighborhood adjacent to mine who has a cello. On certain Sundays since the pandemic began, he has been sitting outside in his driveway on Sunday afternoons and playing. At least he did until we got into the cold winter. People from all over the neighborhood bring chairs or siton the curb in socially distanced groups to listen to him.

A friend of mine is a part-time dj and some Sat evenings, enough for kids to participate, he has been setting up his equipment in his driveway and playing music. They are on a cul de sac, and families have been coming and dancing in the street and yards (socially distanced, of course).

It is really neat the things people have been doing to help each other get through this pandemic. It has been rough, but some good memories are going to come out of this.

The noises in my hood are all scary and bad. And I remember always, that one cop when my house was broken into, “What did you expect when you moved into this neighborhood?” I remember the cute young white teachers used to go on runs in the hood and the cops would tell them it was unsafe. I remember the first black principal we had put us all on a bus and pointed out how horrible this neighborhood was. We are NOT a horrible neighborhood. We come together. Last Christmas or the Christmas before ? Someone sent me a SHIT TON of giftcards. Then Lawn Kid ghosted me. I sometimes see him SPRINTING by my house. Like he thinks I may shoot him or something. I still have a pair of $60 dollar Levis (HOW DID THEY BECOME SO EXPENSIVE? ) waiting on him. But I have given out those gift cards to neighbors with kids who needed Christmas and most recently gave starbucks gift cards to the workers of Stacey Abrams and some mini champagne bottles. THIS IS MY HOOD. And all of you contribute to it. I am trying to get up the courage to give this one man he insprirtion to keep on jogging.
