One of these is NOT a Drag Queen!

I was recently put in time out on Twitter for describing myself as a fag hag. For the young ones here, this was long considered a term of endearment. I just watched the final season of Vida on Starz and it was fun to watch the old school dykes being offended by this new drag queen band at the bar throwing around the word queer. That was offensive to her. Terminology changes a lot in every community. Which brings me to the word “fruit fly” which was apparently supposed to change fag hag into fruit fly. As someone who is currently infested with fruit flies and their utter annoyance. This offends me. So does one of you here with the embryonic barely off his back telling me calling a closeted senator Lady G means that I think all gay want to be women, or at least propagating that thought. Bitch please, I’ve been progay before you were born.

But in this post I am referring to actual fruit flies! Just when I thought they were gone they are back.  In Georgia we live either above or below the gnat line.  I’ve spent a lot of time in both. You get used to living below the gnat line, especially when you live in Savannah. But the gnats do take a lot of getting used to, and dammit I am above the gnat line in this hovel and the fruit flies, the real kind are obnoxious as fuck. I’ve tries boiling vinegar in the drains, beer traps, apple cider vinegar traps, I ACTUALLY CLEANED THE KITCHEN! (kind of). It’s annoying as fuck. So don’t fucking call me a fruit fly.

This brings me to what we should be watching. Also I am hearing some weird, possible target practice outside my house. An indecipherable yelling. I live in a neighborhood where the education level is not optimal. Let’s leave it at that. Maybe someone is getting a new roof. Let’s hope it is that.  So a few of us watched Vida on Starz and I just watched the final season… I think it was three? And there won’t be anymore and that makes me said.

I also just watched the first episode of Big Sky on ABC. It starts off interesting enough… but I strongly recommend you watch the entire first episode.  I’m also watching All Rise on CBS and  Bull On CBS. There are a lot of good network shows like obviously, This is Us on NBC.

I find that we are talking more and more about network shows in the comments of Bravo shows. And I like that. I have been encouraging you guys to get off the Bravo teat for YEARS. I’d love to talk more about some really good shows. I’m old school though and don’t do Netflix or Hulu or any of the streaming sites. I’m not about to buy a smart TV or a fire stick or whatever. I am counting down the days/years when I can get the fuck out of here and bore you all about where I am living. It really doesn’t make a difference who is president. I know I will never have healthcare in this country, so I’m out as soon as my dog leaves me.

But until then, I’ll keep on feeling strange feelings and watching good shows which you guys. Meanwhile, the yelling outside my house sounds kind of like something you would hear in Karate class. I have no idea what is going on. It’s like Bruce Lee is putting on a new roof nearby. But it is a new day and Banjo and I are having brunch.

TT, I almost feel like I should apologize for always being the first to post lately. I live on the west coast now since I’m afraid to go back to the Chicago condo due to being stuck in a high rise. One of my cats, casper, gets hangry at 5:30 am so I’m up super early now. We had fruit flies here and I got those old fashioned sticky tape things that hang. Sticky Fly Tape I found on Amazon and that solved that problem. I hate insects. Been seeing centipedes here and seriously, if insects get in my house, they must want to die. Stay outside insects. I taped Big Sky but haven’t seen it yet since I’m on The Undoing and starting episode 3. OMG, excellent show. I’m sick of Bravo. I also have been pro gay since the late 70’s, early 80’s when I was a hairdresser in south FL. The name of the place was Pazazz.
Wow, how did I remember that? Sadly, they died of AIDS in the early to mid 80’s due to this country’s horrible ignorance and denial of it. They took me under their wing. I don’t see anything wrong with fag hag. Everyone is too emotionally invested in titles these days. I’m not on any social media so I don’t see why ANY of them should block anyone. Without its users, they’d be out of business. I also have Hallmark on in the background when I’m not sitting watching or while knitting since a) nothing bad happens on Hallmark and b) the music is nuts. Same with QVC. It’s background noise. I am also starting Amazing Race so I’m way behind you guys. Meanwhile, hubby is doing better now thank God. I had to buy HBO through Amazon since we don’t get movie channels but it was worth the $14.99 a month for all the viewing pleasure. Making soup today. My sister gave me this recipe for potato leek soup that is drinking cold from the fridge, so that sounds right up my alley. I think she uses a stick of butter in it, but okay anyway.

Speaking of Hallmark, They have their first gay Christmas movie this year! ON FUCKING HALLMARK! It’s called The Christmas House. It premieres Sunday but I can’t watch it then because of fucking Bravo shows and other stuff. I am catching the second viewing on Thursday night. And if you look it up on Bravo you can find a rerun to match your DVR schedule…

I started out in SF as a fag hag myself. The first year I moved here from Boston, ALL my friends were gay men. Needless to say, it was a fun time (1980) and then, AIDS happened, and it was a scary, sad, and worrisome time. I did lose a couple of friends. But before that, we spent a lot of time at cabarets, like Fanny’s on 18th at Castro. I loved that place!

I am not a fag hag by choice. My southern mama was outraged by me. My much older non gay friendly sister once told my mama that when we went to the bar, “She didn’t do anything” and “the gay guys all loved her”. That was weird, because I thought I just loved them. Not for being gay just because. I didn’t know they were gat from across the room.

Oh, my gays back in the 80’s coined me a fag hag…..took me a year to figure it out, that term as a 19yr old at NYU, living in Greenwich Village with 2 drag queens.
The life lessons learned, probably more than any higher education.

Underaged, but didn’t matter then / CBGB, Palladium, Limelight – Underground drag shows in the Bowery, Harlem, Meat Packing District that would crash …. with AIDS.

AIDS, hit me hard, lost friends. Wasn’t scared to crawl in bed and spoon/hug those dying.
If AIDS did not kill them….substance abuse to self medicate did.

      I know.

      I lived it.

All have passed, from my earlier days – mostly to drugs & alcohol.

My gays, I’m allowed to say….considering they wanted me to call them that, knew I left NYC & married a Texan.

I should stop, I’m sad just typing about these 2 men – who cared about me so much & life cut short.

Lulu.. now the children want to tell us, THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED THROUGH THE 80s and want to rename and rebrand us… now they want to tell us you can’t say “my gays” or “the gays”. I actually had a gay man tell me it was offensive to the gays to call Lindsey Graham “Lady G” on Twitter even though that is is gay sex worker code name. Allegedly. Don’t teach the teacher, son. Still today there are people in the closet. But Pete ran for president. I voted for him. I hope he runs again. Not because he is gay. But because he is smart and open minded. He would have been a great president who united the country. Maybe in 2024…

I was telling my sister and her daughter that Pete needs to run again. We all agreed. And vote for him in a second and not cuz he’s gay but I just liked his thinking. He was peaceful and kind. Not some idiot. Look at the person, not the race or the title or gender. It’s not that difficult. Jesus did and if he could do it, we can do it too. Stop pigeon holing. Geez. I heard someone saying you can’t say my gays either and I’m like wtf? Are these little sheltered children THAT sensitive? We never had safe spaces. I’m 64 too, lived in South Florida in the 80’s as I said earlier and my safe space was my apartment I guess. I just worked 2 jobs and dealt with life and went home after work like everyone else. What a bunch of little pussies these kids are today. My other sisters kid told me I need to educate myself. He’s 30 and never left home. I reamed him out. Now my sister isn’t speaking to me because I upset him. Wonder if our parents thought the same about us. Were we pussies? They lived through the depression but they made us tough as shit. Okay, more later. Off to knit. Take care everyone! Love this site.

Maybe I’m angry, as you know losing my husband recently – but I’m gobsmacked, that it’s my generation….that’s raised children, who now are so offended by every fart. Who now are having children themselves & basically bubble wrap them up with thought & deeds.

I realize a different world, I thank higher powers social media didn’t exist when I grew up – me buying a bag of weed and getting grass clippings was my ‘bad day’.

Very fond of Pete, I hope he runs again & hopefully the DNC by then – will allow him to do so.

God I hope not. Pete’s a fake progressive. He and politicians like him are part of the reason Democrats did so poorly during the last election. If they were less chicken shit and more like Bernie they would have control of the Senate right now.

But maybe I don’t care for a full progressive agenda.
I’ve been an Independent registered voter since 1988, lean into Libertarian thought – have voted both ways. I like Pete, Andrew Yang as well.

Democrats did so poorly, because they thought hating Trump was enough.
I do not not watch US news on purpose, and I live in Texas – conservative on steroids. Go read Yang & Buttigieg’s writings, listen to their interviews….very smart men. Smart enough to know a full pull progressive policy will not scale.

It will not scale socially & economically – lest we forget, 73 million still voted for Trump. Total progressive policy, would last – much like Trump, 4 years.

I’m not sure why Dude thinks we want to vote for progressives. We are barely comfortable with voting Dem at all. And if the Republican party ever gets back in office… #AlsoIndependent.

No I get that you’re not progressives but the problem with the Democratic party is they keep catering to everybody but their own party in particular the part that does the heavy lifting to get them elected. So we end up with Republican lite candidates who support Republican litt policies.

              Eff that!

Platitude Pete is one of the worst of the lot of them he says a lot but almost nothing substantive nothing worth hearing.

And there you have it Dude.

Your problem exists within your own party, that sold their souls for mediocrity/Hollywood shame game/news venues reluctant to be bi partisan & now, watch the Republicans mop up 2022, and beyond.

              Am no Republican.
I am a realist. An observer of political theory, an Economist by trade for 20yrs.

Locally, in Texas – already moved on. Grass roots growing daily, new young republicans getting prepared for 2022/2024.

They don’t internally fight, but I’ll sit back as the observer I am & watch the implosion of the DNC.

I just want both parties to get back to their core beliefs. And I really wish they would come together to get rid of the electoral college. It’s ridiculous. I get the reason why it was formed, but I think we should just go with the popular vote. I’ve given up hoping for healthcare. I’ll be out of here in a few years anyway.

So I read the title of this article and automatically assumed it was going to be about the female friends of Dorothy..before anyone crucifies me I’m gay and for those of you that don’t know at least for us up here in the North friends of Dorothy is lovely slang for gay men…along the same lines as fruit flies. I applaud the use and say on a rainy Saturday you made me chuckle.

The part I found so funny about just reading this title is I am sitting in a chair at my hair salon waiting for my partner to finish getting his hair cut when our stylist…a lovely older very feminine man shouts across the room to a college age kid “hey are you gay because if you are then all the guys in here are.” I have to admit it took my breath away and he immediately followed it with don’t worry it’s just a bunch of homos and fruit flies up in here today….I don’t think this kid could escape quickly enough but the tie in to your title line was too perfect not to share…

LOL. I hate the ever changing terminology, I think the best word to describe me is “friend” I never really appreciated the “fag hag” term. It was pre-AIDS and when that happened it was like you can call me anything you want, just please don’t die. .I hope we get to a point where straight women who love their gay male friends don’t have to have a name. And the new name is EVERYBODY.

I couldn’t agree more. It definitely feels better to be the friend than it does the “gay” friend. The most difficult part though is it seems in a lot of cases the labels that are put on gay men and their straight female counterparts are created by those same people. Like the younger ones want to be part of the subculture and don’t realize until they are older that those things help to continue the feeling that we are different not equal…I’m guilty of it myself but now being….almost 40… I can see the things I would do different. But TT one thing I know for sure, you’re perfect just the way you are! No matter what the things you write brighten my day or at least make me feel part of a group!

Ok enough serious everyone have a good day!

They are recorded, but just haven’t been interested enough – awaiting Atlanta & Jersey.

Got roped into the last 2 Seasons of The Crown the last few days, not as good as the first 2 – but better than Bravo of late by a large margin. About to start the Undoing here shortly, just ordered BBQ – was craving ribs & fixings, wine in stock.
PS – I leave a small portion of wine in its glass overnight to combat fruit flies. Gross seeing those little f$*&#%s, but seems to do the trick.

Will be back for more shows to get caught up on 🙂

I struggle with fruit flies too because I go and stay with family members a lot and always manage to forget some piece of trash or liquid left out and come home to a swarm. Putting a piece of fruit in a container with holes punched in the lid changed my life. The flies will be attracted by the fruit but are too dumb to get out and you can drown them once it’s full. My state was actually completely free of fruit flies until recently, so I’d never had the pleasure.

Thank you so much for recommending The Undoing. I binged it all at once and can’t wait for episode 5. Without spoiling anything, I usually figure out what is going on pretty quickly with most plots but this one keeps me guessing. I hope the ninja roofer is ok!

I worked at Disney World when I was 17 and met the first gay men of whom I was ever aware. After Katrina the fruit flies were so bad I had to put saran wrap on the tops of my drinks to cover them. Without it they would swoop in for a drink and promptly die in the strongly alcoholic concoctions which I must admit was simultaneously satisfactory and disgusting.

    I feel your pain.
