I hope it is better late than never on this week’s Southern Charm recap. I’m still trying to get my sleep back on track. Unfortunately, now I am falling asleep before prime time and waking up at five. Thanks for bearing with me! I have the weekend to try to get back on a normal schedule. I do suck at normal though, so….
Let’s see what is happening in Charleston this week.
It’s Not That Kind Of Corona, Y’all
We begin on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Most of us here did all of our hoarding and preparing for lockdown the week before and were at least five days into quarantine by then. And most of us remain in quarantine. Everything is shut down in Charleston. Craig goes to visit Whitney. He won’t let him in but he tosses him toilet paper.

Then, we back up a week. Sidenote. My grocery shopping went from all organic everything to “fuck it get whatever you want” this week. I’d been craving Chex Mix and snacks. So I bought a huge box of Check Mix individual snack to keep me from eating an entire box, and one of those boxes that moms buy to put a snack treat in their kids lunch box. I am have two bags of Funjuns for breakfast right now. I have better options, but dammit, the heart wants what the heart wants. Or the tummy in this case. Okay, carrying on…
Once You Pop, You Can’t Stop!
Danni and Leva are at Kathryn’s place. Does that mean they are in Monck’s Corner? I’m confused. Where the hell is she living now? Anyway, Kathryn is not home and they had plans. Leva says she had to get childcare and take time off from her businesses. It looks like she got her Monck’s Corner townhouse together quickly since Thomas got someone knocked up. And she’s having the girls over to help with finishing touches. They are drinking the same inexpensive prosecco that should be in my wine delivery today.

Back in Charleston, Craig and Austen are having a chat. Craig is looking for his own place finally. And Austen tells Craig about the night before where John Pringle was drunk and hitting on Madison all night. Austen, Madison, Kathryn and Pringle came to his house for an after party. Pringle was hitting on Madison and Austen aggressively threw him out of his house. Pringle came back after him. Madison is loving all of this attention. Craig and Austen both know that Patricia is encouraging this behavior.
Perhaps The Pandemic Is A Real Thing?
Pringle is trying to have his boys fly out to stay with him. He seems to think that the pandemic will blow over in a couple of weeks. Either the boys won’t make it at all, or he probably still has them. Meanwhile, Shep and Taylor go to play tennis. Shep plays a mean hard game. It seems that they are officially dating because Taylor reminds him of his mommy. And she would fit in at the country club. And you thought Shep didn’t have standards. Craig is still trying to get the asbestos out of his house and he is renting a furnished apartment for $3,900 a month! That’s a ton in Charleston. Is it on the ocean or something?

Kathryn seems to think Corona is a joke. She was asking the girl at Gwynn’s about a buyers trip to NYC. The girl was like, do you not watch the news? Ah, then we got the Republican Governor’s radio briefing. It was basically, “nothing to see here, folks.” Craig helps Pringle buy a suit. Patricia is having another “gentlemen’s dinner.” Madison is still styling hair. She calls Patricia. Patricia is really encouraging Madison to give Pringle a chance. Austen is going to be at the dinner knowing Patricia is encouraging Pringle to steal his girl.
Slowly, Reality Sets In
On March 13th, Leva and Lamar start to realize that the pandemic is going to affect their restaurants. Yet, the don’t quite get it yet. In fact, Leva has the managers of the restaurants over to her house to discuss things. Still no masks. They still haven’t absorbed the gravity of the situation. Craig doesn’t belief the virus exists. Patricia cancelled the dinner and goes into quarantine. So Craig is thinking of having a housewarming party. Austen, Madison and her kid go out for ice cream. No masks, full restaurant. Madison thinks she and Austen and the kid should go on vacation.

Four days later, everything is shut down. And Craig has a cough. Pringle’s kids can’t come. He’s trying to got to San Diego to quarantine with them. Leva has closed her businesses. Schools are closed. Danni doesn’t feel well. Kathryn has cabin fever after four days of quarantine. Madison and Austen have both cancelled their business plans. Shep is in Hilton Head with his parents. He visited on the weekend before the shutdown. Craig finally realizes the pandemic is real.
Next week, the city has opened partially, the guys don’t take things seriously. Kathryn’s monkey emoji debacle his aired out. People start getting sick.
TT, I’m not sure I want to watch other people going thru what we went through. However, Patricia needs to mind her own business. What’s the big deal about Madison anyway? Show isn’t the same without the other girls. What’s with craig and austen and their obsession with drinking? Meanwhile, has anyone watched the Undoing? I saw the first episode and now I’m hooked….
The Undoing, yes yes yes!! Tamara recommended it a few weeks ago and I’m hooked too!! I just don’t want him to be guilty, but . . .
Gigi Episode 2 is the best! Get on it!
I started watching the fourth episode on HBO, but when I realized how good it was, I stopped watching and streamed the first three episodes and now am anxiously awaiting for episode five on Sunday.
Tamara, it’s for tonight! Will report back!!!
if our fearless leader eats that snack stuff for breakfast, she’s gonna get the Covid from having to go out to the grocery/pharmacy for Rolaids and Tums and Maalox.
Chex Mix COUNTS AS CEREAL! Thus it’s a breakfast food. I might have also had a bag of onions too, but by then, it was more BRUNCH time….
I don’t know why but I am still amazed at Katheryn’s disregard for other people’s time and effort. These women (with jobs and kids and their own lives), banded together to help her and her kids move into their home and she isn’t there when they show up?? It’s not like she isn’t aware of how hurtful it is (especially to Danni). And Leva still showing up after the rumor Kathryn spread was such a gesture of friendship and girl power. There is no excuse anymore. She’s a woman and a mother now … not a child who doesn’t know any better. I understand the effects of being with a narcissist and the trauma that continues long after the relationship has ended. I really want to root for her but can’t stand the way she treats her friends. I miss the real girl power of Chelsea, Naomi, Danni and Cameron. I think Leva would’ve been such a great addition to that group. Katheryn has been given so many second chances with her friends and to show that she is a good person but she never comes through. This triggered me big time and I’m not sure if I can continue to watch especially knowing what’s coming up with the racist remarks. There is no accountability on Katheryn’s part and I can’t stand watching her act like a victim … yet again.
there was a flashback to a prior season to a scene with Chelsea. Chelsea lights up the screen, what star power! i am sad she lost her paycheck with this show.
I couldn’t get past just how jarring it was to see the beginning of the pandemic—it seems like a literal lifetime ago. Seeing it unfold on a tv show was hard to watch. I was pretty surprised by my visceral reaction—like a bad horror movie where you yell at the screen and say “don’t go into the woods!!!”….only it’s “don’t go to that bar or ice cream joint, and nobody needs a suit now!”
I wish for those carefree days BC!
I felt exactly the same watching this episode. It was extremely anxiety-producing. Every time one of them said the virus wasn’t real was jarring. It was a good episode, but not sure I want to see it going forward, while we’re in the middle of it flaring up all across the country. And Madison’s kid wants to go Disney World. Uh, NO.
I think the only reason production kept Kathryn on was to give viewers a train wreck to watch… she has no story line. Neither does anyone else on the show . Cameron and the other girls time ran out and they were all boring also. Hope Cameron teaches her daughter to chew with her mouth closed and not to talk with a full mouth of food like she did many times for the world to see . They needed someone for people to watch crash and burn . That was Kathryn. Craig needs his own show making pillows and making shit happen . Everyone else is cashed like a cheap dime bag from 1992.
I just want to say that I think Danni has a beautiful personality (so she has no business being in reality TV).
She seems like such a gentle soul without being a push over. She’s sensitive – but to other people’s feelings, not just her own. She’s principled, but gives a lot of latitude to people who aren’t. She’s thoughtful about not screwing up other people’s lives. Loyal friend to a fault. She has good instincts. She’s basically a dog-person which I mean as a compliment.
*I’m still disappointed in Patricia about her racist dolls (which I did manage to get a screen shot of).
Agree with everything you said.
It’s just a breath of fresh air to look at one of these shows and notice “oh wow, that’s an actual decent human being” It took me four (or however many seasons there are) to notice, lol.
Ohhh, I did not notice the dolls! What were they? I clearly remember the Little Black Sambo dolls being sild at all the tourist places in Charleston when I was there, a couple of decades ago. I was shocked.
She has a set of Blackamoor (candlestick holders and clock) prominently displayed on her mantle. Antique dealers/shows won’t even allow those to be sold in America anymore.
I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see it in the house of a very old Southern woman who hadn’t left her small town in 6 decades and says she’s not racist (while she’s actually totally racist)…but it’s strange to see so proudly displayed since the season revolves around the removal of racist statues that were installed a long time ago in a different cultures climate. Meanwhile someone on the cast chooses to decorate, today -right now- with Blackamoor.
Deb, they are not dolls. They are blackamoor figurines. They’s extremely expensive decorative art pieces that began in 17th century Italy. They are often for sale in the US, despite what Bucky says, They have been around way longer than the United states. And are highly collected by rich black celebrities and other in the US.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackamoor_(decorative_arts)
Every major show/auction in the United States that I know of has revised their contracts to forbid the sale of Blackamoor and other racist collectibles (including the AD which Patricia loves to reference) and issued apologies for allowing it in the past.
Black celebrities owning black face memorabilia and Blackamoor isn’t relevant.
Actually it is ONE Auction. Blackamoor is a very hot commodity. And rich black people buying it all up is EXTREMELY relevant.
Many black rich people vie against each other for black lawn jockeys and other racist objects for their homes I’ll let you look that up. They are literally the only people who still buy that and will make a killing if they ever sell it.
Which auction do you think is the only one? Regardless, you’re incorrect. There are many shows and many auctions (all of the top shows in America) that ban it and several have issued statements about the policy. I’ll let you look that up. I’m more than casually familiar with the industry and market, otherwise I would not be speaking with authority on the subject. I’m not a blowhard just forcing my opinion down anyone’s throat. Unless you are under the impression that Patricia Altschul is a black person, it isn’t relevant. You’re great, but you aren’t the arbiter of this topic. It’s all been settled by experts through extensive scholarship. It’s not an open question in the America of 2020.
You are correct,There is nothing racist about Blackamoor figurines etc. would you consider a figurine with an iriental face to be racist?
Blackamoor is overtly racist. It celebrates colonization and oppression. This isn’t a matter of opinion. It is the subject of many exhibitions of hate based art and, as I said, widely banned in auctions and antique shows for good reason, by people highly educated and thoughtful about art, culture, and antiques. Of course, you CAN buy it. You can buy swastika mementos too, it doesn’t make it normal to include swastikas in an ad for caftans. Being expensive or being owned by black people doesn’t make Blackamoor or blackface more acceptable. If a black person uses the n-word, that doesn’t give license to an old white lady to use it. If a gay person uses the f-word, that doesn’t give straight people license to use it as a slur. You’re on the wrong side of this one. The country is in the process of a cultural reawakening and I’m sure many people are going to be confronted with cultural shifts that happened over the past several decades while they weren’t paying attention. You can’t wear blackface, display Blackamoor, dress like a nazi, traffic child sex slaves and get away with it like someone could in the early 80s.
Pru, I choose to agree and disagree with you. Of course on the surface it is “racist” NOW. But it is also ART, As a (ghetto) art collector, you can’t erase art as the world evolves. We don’t get to destroy the past as we evolve. That is why blackamoor is highly collected by African Americans. And lunatic left fringe idiots want to wipe it out. It’s literally been around since the 17th century!
Also, people are Asian, and things are Oriental. So you are not exactly helping here. lol.
And also there is a SHIT TON that is racist about Blackamoor. But that is kind of the point of the art,
Every photo in my living room and my dining room is of black artists. I have an Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, an oil of the slave market that Charleston suddenly says never existed, a recreation of the funeral scene with the umbrellas made famous on the Cosby show., and more. You are not going to out art me unless you have millions.
According to the Wikipedia article that Tamara linked to above, the figures are depicted in subservient roles, so I can see why they would be considered racist. BTW, I assume you meant to say “Oriental,” which is considered a racist term by Asians…the accepted term for at least the last two decades…so I don’t think I’ll take your word for what is racist and what is not. Tamara and Bucky, thanks for the education! I had never heard of those figurines before.
People who buy art don’t agree with situation at the time. It doesn’t make them racist. now stop making me defend Patricia. She probably got them from one of her ex husbands.
Bucky,
First of all FUCK YOU FOR MAKING ME DEFEND PATRICIA!
As anyone who knows me and has read here she is a carpetbagger. I am not a fan.
I would love to call here out for being a horrible person with racist art. But it just is not the case. Blackamoor is very expensive art that has been around since the 17th century. It is HIGHLY collectible and very expensive with both white and black art collectors.
Black American art like little black Sambo and the lawn jockeys are HIGHLY COLLECTABLE and the are only a few hundred years old. It’s extremely popular with rich black folk.
So highly coveted SEVENTEENTH CENTURY Blackamoor is also very popular and very expensive. Across racial lines .
I am not a Patricia fan at all but I think your joy in making Patty take down her post that showed her Blackamoor is a misunderstanding of history. You must realize that these are SEVENTEENTH HISTORY replications of Major points in history, right AND TO BETTER CLEAR THIS UP, Black and white people collect them , You sound like someone from California coming to explain race relations…. to the south. We’re good. We don’t need you. AND STOP MAKING ME DEFEND PATRICIA BECAUSE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
I gotta agree with Bucky here. White people having art of subservient black people is weird and tacky. Not saying Patricia is a flat out racist for having them, but it’s not the best look. Huge difference between black and white people owning them. It’s like celebrating the culture of subservience.
Saying that black people collecting the art is okay and white people can’t is in itself racist. I’m simply pointing out that people who collect 17th century art, are able to do so. And it doesn’t make them racist. AND ONCE AGAIN, please stop making me defend Patricia. There are many reasons not to like her. But being an art collector is now one.
If you think I’m impressed by capital letters and swearing at me, you’ve miscalculated. The only person agreeing with you here thinks that it’s appropriate to call the faces of Asian people “oriental” -like they’re carpets. Didn’t that give you pause?
Wherever you sense joy about this is something you imagined. Also, I didn’t make Patricia Altschul do anything. I never suggested, or thought, that you need me. You made all of that up.
This isn’t an appropriate forum to talk about the social media activity of reality tv personalities. I was shocked by it in the moment and I was wrong to vent here. I just happened to be posting here when it happened. I apologize for that.
I took a few minutes to reply today, only because I gave you the benefit of the doubt. You keep doubling down. Please believe that I did not intend to antagonize you. I would not take time to do that.
I don’t know why you think that an expensive item can’t be racist or anti-Semitic. I don’t know why you think Blackamoor is “black American art” but I’ve addressed both of those in previous replies and you seem aggregated by facts. I can’t imagine why you think that something made in the 17th c, or something popular, can’t be a racist object. That’s an absurd position.
I’m not a person from California. I didn’t even know you were anti-California. But, you’re not “good” on this topic, you’re about three decades behind. And, that’s true.
I’m not lecturing about history. I do have humility about history in excess of what you’ve displayed.
If I didn’t know more about this topic/market than what you were posting (case in point, you think one auction house banned Blackamoor. You’re not educated about this…and that’s not an insult. This is a specific area of the antique market.) I wouldn’t have responded. I’ve only responded to disinformation you posted with facts because I thought you just didn’t know the facts.
So this is a weird exchange to end with, but for whatever it’s worth, I did appreciate your recaps before I saw this side and I had thought that you’d created a nice community here that was a much needed outlet for escapism in these really stressful times.
XOXO,
Bucky
Bucky. I apologize for cussing. I swear like a sailor when I have had too much to drink. It wasn’t personal.
And I am not really Anti-Californian. I have plenty of friends there, here. I do like to josh with them though. Just like I do with may Canadian friends.
It seems I did not make my opinions clear. My point is that this is Italian art from the 17th century. People collect art. Blackamoor is HIGHLY collectable and expensive and collected by black and white people alike. I tried, perhaps in a bad way to compare it to people who collect the American art that is popular with black art collectors who collect racist American art.
Some art collectors collect art they like, some art collectors collect are that is expensive (like blackamoor). Art is art. And Art from the 17th century Italy cannot be (in my opinion) be a sign of racism for some old lady in 2020. I don’t like or want to be the spokesperson for Patricia. I have no idea if she is racist or not.
I just find your glee in “catching her” her for owning some “racist artwork” is the least reason one could have for disliking her. Perhaps if she had a collection of Little Black Sambo figurines, I could have supported your position, But again, there a tons of rich black people who can afford those who have some of those too.
History does not rewrite itself for our newly enlightened generations. People still buy antiques. That is not art I would buy. I am just not interested in black history that demeans black people. I prefer my Elizabeth O’Neil Verner that hangs in my living room next to a local Charleston artist that has two women looking at the slave market that Charleston wants to say never was by a more contemporary artist.
But it is never fair to blame the art collector for the sins of the people whose art was made. Art is history. And you can’t put the 17th century ignorance on the collector.
That said, based on the TV show, it seems Patricia could be racist. But that doesn’t cancel art. I get it is a cancel culture. But you can’t cancel art. Which is why, as I said rich black people collect this art.
ART ITSELF IS NOT RACIST. People are RACIST. Artist just give us a view into history. And as art collector I was offended by your comments. I used language I should not have used. I apologize to you for that. But not for my opinions.
Footnote: I also still reserve the right to mess with people from California. It’s what we do in the south. 🙂
Patricia is a Virginian. As am I . We are not carpetbaggers. And I repeat- Blackamoors are not racist! Nor are Oriental/ Asian pieces! They are works of art appreciated by people of taste.
I was so surprised of the change to Craig and Shep’s looks when they showed the cli;ps from 7 years ago. Wow, the drinking/overserving over those 7 years really shows. They look rough and sloven , definitely middle-aged……
I think they must be using different cameras this season and the old lenses were more flattering. I hope.
OMG I noticed that too! Shep looks like he has aged 20 years minimum!
That’s because he has. He looks horrible.
His looks were slightly below average in the first place. Poor bastard lol ?
Truth!! Ur too funny ?? I recall that now, Cameron was quite the loud mouth and always yacking at the restaurants.
Poor Craig who’s the youngest of the guys has ruined his male beauty. He looked so good and healthy back in Naomi years. ??
Best Title Ever! LOL
I am just curious as to why Bravo thinks we care about this triangle. Austin has been around for a hot minute, Madison on and off and Pringle is new. These people are not that interesting. Madison, although a very pretty girl, is a hot MESS. Patricia seems to over look that. But then again she is a hot mess herself. Austin is a big boy bander kind of guy and this other new guy , although quite hunky, does not seem to be much better at being a grown up than Austin. It stinks watching other people suffer through the pandemic but we all kind of lived that so……. Not impressed so far this season. At least we won’t have to look at Thomas anymore….I hope
Hope you are sleeping better TT.
Ikr, Thomas is weird & creepy looking like his Dad? Looks like he belongs in another time, like on a plantation yelling at people. Eew how the Hell did Kathryn get with that thing….? ?
PLEASE READ THE COMMENTING RULES AND PICK ONE NAME TO POST WITH.
https://tamaratattles.com/commenting-rules/
While watching this, I was trying to remember which of the cast had Covid-19 earlier this year. Whitney seems like the only one who took it seriously (not counting Michael and Patricia using the sanitizing light because I don’t know where in the timeline of this shitshow that happened). It is eerie.
If Bravo keeps showing My Pillow ads, I am going to stop watching Bravo cold turkey. Bad enough Mr. Pillow gave all that money to the Orange Demon’s campaign, now he gave a bunch to bail the white supremicist out of jail. I don’t know how much of the $2million bail he put up, but that should have been a no-bail case.
The coronavirus briefing where the My Pillow guy addressed our nation and said that the White House asked him to start looking for a cure may be one of the top ten weirdest episodes of 2020 for me. It was surreal.
I totally agree about the My Pillow guy! Get him off my TV! Just read that Ricky Schroder (that child actor once upon a time) paid to get that shooter out of jail. So it took a village, apparently. Burn that village down!
Another boring SC. What dull lives they lead. Let’s hope Kathryn has moved to her own place and stays far away from TRav and his toxic knocked up gf! Still in disbelief why he’s with some other guy’s sloppy leftovers who lost custody of her 2 teens! Damn, he’s DUMB.
Ikr, wasn’t she friends with psycho nurse Ashley too ?? I think he’s just a sadist to NOT marry kathryn. They still hook up…barf. but she loved him, had his 2 kids. Like why go knock up an older skank ? She’s like 9 years older than Kathryn I think. Plus Kathryn is a name in that town, etc…. Like him. Can you imagine Kathryn’s poor dying mana leaving life on earth, to see what a mess her daughter life is. How in the world she end up doing drugs in her sorority and being so pathetically promiscuous?? I guess she’s just stupid. Ugh ?
I’m not watching the show this season, just reading Tamara’s posts, but my God, Kathryn looks like a new drag queen who hasn’t quite mastered makeup yet in all the photos. Does she look better when she’s in motion on camera? Or does she still look like she fought a contouring palette and lost? I remember how beautiful and fresh she used to look. There were times when she wore some crazy outfits and bad dresses. And there were times when she wore a lot of makeup for a ball or dinner party, but she still looked really beautiful. So all the pictures and screen shots I’ve seen of her from this season are just sort of jarring, I guess.
So far, it does not get better…
I agree! I don’t think she’s ever been that pretty though!!! I’m sorry to say it but she’s gotten chunky! She looks horrible in the clothes she picks out. She really is an immature self centered girl! She is a complete airhead! What any man sees in her I don’t see!!! I wish the other girls were on and she was gone!!
Couldn’t agree more re Kathryn! She’s pure unadulterated garbage! Mean, selfish and self centered. She has no taste, zero manners and has a reputation that is bad going back to her college days! And she looks like holy hell!
Kathryn does have great bones tho. Her prettiest times were the bravo makeups for the reunions and wwhl. Also she looks good on Insta from her Gwynns shoots. But I think I read she lost that job this summer due to cps drama or drugs agn…..? Womp womp?
Madison has been working that position at Gwynn’s for a while now I believe…
