Open Forum: Quarantine Viewing–What Are You Watching?

October 25, 2020 by tamaratattles 103 Comments

What are y’all watching during quarantine? I keep meaning to ask what is new to watch, but the last time I did, y’all got me hooked on 90 Day Fiancé. And there are 298 franchises of that show. That said, they are all number one on their night on cable. So um bravo (SWIDT?) to you.  Also a brief word. THIS IS AN OPEN FORUM POST. I know that we are all going through things and have a lot of feelings. BUT PLEASE CONTAIN YOUR OFF TOPIC TOPICS TO OFF TOPIC FORUMS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I know feelings come out when you least expect it and and I get it, I do it too. But if you are looking vent about ANYTHING off topic, BOOKMARK THIS LINK. And you can talk about whatever off topic you want! There is usually one a week or more. But Off Topic comments is the best place to let us all know how you are doing. Or what shows you randomly want to talk about. Or really anything other than the subject at hand. You can also ask me your questions here.

I’m starting this post late at night because I have been binge watching The Spanish Princess on Starz this weekendish. I am pretty sure I watched some of season one but I don’t remember it. So I watched all of season one and realized that the at least some of the people portrayed in the movie are actual historical figures. I thought it was just more of a… I dunno… random series. So when my brain kicked in I started some googling and reading the reviews. So, if you know your 16th century (?) European history you will hate this series. It’s like 80 percent inaccurate according to the reviews from smart people online whose heads exploded. That’s because is is a MOVIE roughly based on a few historical events.

Even More Good Bad Choices

Tonight’s double feature began with Yesterday on HBO. In case you didn’t know it’s a comedy and sort of a rom com about a guy who is a musician whose career is not taking off so he thinks he should go back to teaching. Then one day he wakes up and no one on earth except for him know who The Beatles are and have never heard the music. So he gets an idea… This one the critics were sort of mixed on.  The Beatles music probably helped. I liked it. Who doesn’t like a good rom com.

Right this minute, I am watching The Professor on Showtime. It’s about a college professor who has six months to live. It’s comedy! Johnny Depp plays the professor. It’s his six months of doing and saying everything he ever wanted to say to anyone, and doing all the drinking and druging and fucking he wants. But, it’s kind of funny!  All the critics HATE this movie. Which made me like it even more. Did mention Johnny Depp? And it kind of makes the concept that we are all going to die a little easier.

It’s nearly three am, and I am starting Little Women on Starz. I’ve been wanting to see this movie. Of course many of us know the story. But, Do we? I mean it’s 2020 and I really don’t remember. So I’ll let you all discover it. The critics like this one.

Please share your recommendations with the others. I do not subscribe to Netflix or Hulu or any of your new-fangled things. 🙂 I am constantly online working on the site and prefer to watch whatever is available on my dumb TV. But you are welcome to talk amongst yourself.

This is an open forum, so feel free to talk about other things. I VOTED on Friday. I hope you all will too.

Does anyone have a doll collector in the family? I have several Madame Alexander dolls in box with tissue never played with. Looking to sell. Also a baseball collection from maybe the 90s? Probably nothing good in there but you ever know. Some boxed some sleeved. Are there still baseball cards?/

I bought them because they would be super valuable in my old age. Is old. They are not that valuable. People don’t do dolls and baseball cards anymore. I suck at financial planning. I was like 18 at the time though so I applaud my old stupid self for thinking of me in between whoring around.

omg I LOVED Madame Alexander dolls and had about 10 of them, I have them still at my mother’s house I think but they are all played with, I remember my Godmother getting me one and it cost almost 14 dollars!
I had a patient, I would go to her house, and she had about 20 Mme A dolls. They were all in disarray, and it broke my heart. I used to check the labels of all of them and sit them nicely on her shelf while she was doing her writing. (ugh rich people…)

One thing I’m not watching is the news. So tired of being beat over the head with virus statistics and political diatribe. Does negative commentary really sell that much? You’d think by now we would be ready for some good stuff. It’s a sad state when we watch reality TV to escape reality. We must be doing a lot of it if the 90 Day franchise is top bill. I wish I could fast forward through to the New Year. I’d slam that button and try to forget 2020 ever happened. Thanks for the recommendations. My viewing game needs the help. Here I am awake in the wee hours because I slept too much yesterday. The 4 Stages of Quarantine would be hysterical if it wasn’t so true for me. I am not one of those people who used the time to get in great shape.

Love After Lockup. I adore that Matt Sharp Productions are powering through the pandemic and pumping out content, LALU is my new obsession, and that ain’t easy from Australia.
I also ADORED Welcome to Plathville and happy the new season drops 10 November.
I’ve watched all of Succession through twice.
The Vow and Seduced about the Nexium cult is also great doco viewing. I wish I could see the doco about the theme park, Class Action Park? But I haven’t found it here yet.
90 Day has saved my life during COVID. And brought me to my LALU happy place.
I also had the eyewatering experience of seeing Wendy Williams show on YouTube. We don’t get her here. Something is obviously completely wrong, she had Suzanne Somers on and just babbled nonsense at her and cut her off again and again. This woman is sick and seems to be being propped up by a culture of sychophancy that is not helping her. I won’t get that 41 minutes back and I’m still nauseated. I was reminded that I cannot bear laugh tracks, canned laughter or hostages wearing ‘How you doing?’ face masks being forced at gunpoint to applaud for two minutes straight while Wendy spaces out. What’s going on?!

I loved the Professor with Johnny Depp. Funny sweet & at times quite moving. I revisited Before Sunrise on HBO Max one of my all time favorites. My other go to Notting Hill with Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant. The character of William Thacker is me to a T. It’s like looking in a mirror & seeing myself. Aside from the great looks that man is a carbon copy of me. Also as I finally treated myself & got Netflix on my phone I have watched the remake of 1968’s classic film Boys in the Band. Extremely dated yet still poignant in its portrayal of gay men in the 60’s. The remake of Rebecca with Armie Hammer & Lily James is incredibly well done. The scenery & sets are lush & atmospheric. Unsolved MYSTERIES new episodes are unbelievably good ( miss the narration by Robert Stack but still great episodes) not really into Bravo anymore too dark & overwrought with forced storylines & an abundance of extreme negativity. Giving up on all Bravo except RHONJ although I must admit I still devour all the recaps. Have a great weekend. Check out The Orphanage a film by G. Del Toro a spooky paranormal thriller about the angst of motherhood spectral visits by ghosts & cinematography & film score that will make you weep. EXTRAORDINARY film by the director of The Shape of Water.

Marc, you watch a lot of the same things I do on Netflix. Unsolved Mysteries of course. I haven’t watched the new Rebecca, but I’ve seen several versions. It’s good to know it’s worth watching. I watch about an episode a week of Umbrella Academy, because the violence gets to me and I need a break. I don’t know if you’ve watched The Good Place, but I find it hilarious.

I like all of the spooky/scary shows. Last I watched was the Haunting of Bly Manor.

I too read Tamara’s re-caps even if I don’t watch the shows. And I apologize to Tamara for posting about an off-topic show in an earlier post.

I am glad you also enjoyed Rebecca…I don’t understand the bad critic reviews. I felt like it is much better than the other two older versions. The first version is good but I hated Joan Fontaine in it. She ruined it for me. The second mini-series one was just okay.

For those of you that dont know I wont do spoilers but The Haunting series on Netflix appears to be their answer to American Horror Story series…with recasts of the same actors. I have enjoyed them.

TT, your dumb TV could become a smart TV and then you’d have a million more things to watch! 🙂 I bought a TV with built in ROKU for my office and have been watching tons of movies from the late 90s/early 2000s. My sister loves LALU, I watched one season but there is too much 90 day stuff which I am highly addicted to, and have been since Season 1. I mean I revolve my Sundays around it. Love anything on TCM and the old movies. The background music alone is worth it. And on NatGeo is Locked Up Abroad which is terrifying and yet I can’t stop watching. Can’t listen to anything negative. I’m convinced it affects me at a cellular level. I rewatch any comedies and Sebastian Maniscalco is rip roaring pee in your pants hilarious if you were raised in the midwest. You can get some of his stuff on YouTube. Also just started rewatching Schitts Creek and it’s funnier every time I watch it. Also been making soups. Anyone have any good ones? I keep making leek, barley and mushroom. TT, get a smart TV. Netflix is the bomb.

I’ve been watching a lot of Evil Lives Here, Unsolved Mysteries, and other a True Crime shows. Evil Lives Here is narrated by a loved one of the evil doer, so it approaches cases more sensitively than some other shows. I think it’s well done.

I’m trying to find some paranormal investigation shows that are less silly. ‘tis the season. I’d also love to find some films or tv shows about the Revolutionary War.

I’m making a shelter for my “barn cat.” I can’t tell if he ever goes inside my barn (even though that’s his profession), so I’m thinking of putting the shelter near the area where I feed him because he often hangs out there all day. On the other hand, I worry that the food attracts predators to that area who would hurt him. He’s a tough kitty. I guess he knows how to survive.

I’m watching The Sopranos, which I had never seen, and I’ve just started watching The Crown. I LOVED The White Princess. I highly recommend going back and watching that. In order, it is The White Queen, The White Princess, and the Spanish Princess. I thought The White Princess was the best of the three. Now my cable provider has dropped Starz from packages and it has to be purchased separately. I’m considering it just for the Spanish Princess, but haven’t decided yet. Next up, I’m considering Breaking Bad, which I had also never seen, and my sister recommends Virgin River.

Apparently they are recommending a bowl for the kids a decent distance from the house, i am totally fine with that as long as i get my trick or treat and get to see the costumes. As we are allowing for festivities i am watching a lot of horror movies, Hocus Pocus, and the travel Channel which has turned into. Ghost hunting network to stay in the mood and out of politics.

Did I delete the episode without watching? It comes on at 11 here and so does The View. I tape them both and so because I sleep with the TV on the channel usually changes from whatever I feel asleep watching to Wendy and it wakes me up a little bit. So I try to watch hot topics but usually fall back asleep. Was this the episode with the black leather jumpsuit? I need more reminders. What happened?

Yes, black jumpsuit. I went back to see if it got better, it did not. I think confused is a generous description.

Usually, even low energy Wendy can nail her teleprompter and ask a few questions she doesn’t care about. This was BAD. She just stopped so many times and was back on another conversation, it was hard to watch.

She was even a hostile mess with the guy doing dumb crafts, and not even in a funny way.

Vinyl. She did manage to get that out. She babbled nonsense and as a first time viewer, I was appalled at watching someone so obviously either impaired or mentally ill. She couldn’t follow along when the guy recapping reality tv was trying to get through his segment and explain OC. She kept telling her on camera people and segment presenters (all gay men) that she loved them, and they had to say it back. Then applause. Then she had no idea what was being talked about. The Halloween craft segment was over in 10 seconds because Wendy was not returning any of her copresenter’s lobs and went off randomly about the eyelashes on a pumpkin. Her interview with Suzanne Somers, who had broken her hip, and at 1 stage faced paralysis, was just rude and spaced out. Wendy seemed to be hallucinating, I thought at one point. It was the saddest and most bizarre thing I have watched on TV for a long time. It’s on YouTube, the full episode.

ELEANOR KICKS ASS! Seriously, she was awesome, and gave no fucks in later years.

You must be watching their new series on First Ladies. I’ve only watched the one on Nancy Reagan. That was good too.

Her son Ron had a radio show on Air America. When that busted up, it continued locally on a Seattle station. I’m SO happy I was on the road when he said the entire two hours were going to be dedicated to Senator Kennedy, who had passed away a day or two before.

He then said he had a very special guest, a close friend of Senator Kennedy… then “Mom, are you there? Mom?” and proceeded to interview his mom about her dear friend Teddy. She BLASTED the Republicans who were refusing to go to the White House to meet with President Obama, talked about how she and her husband had Teddy over for dinner when they were living in the White House (her rule? No politics during dinner… after dinner she made sure they had the drinks, dessert, cigars, etc. and shut the door basically saying “have at it”… they could argue then.)

Besides WH staff, etc. she said that Teddy was the first to show up at the hospital when President Reagan was shot, and sat with her while they waited. He also called her on every birthday.

I wish I still had a recording of that episode of his show. It was fantastic.

The CNN show was pretty good. I got emotional when Ron got teary about his Dad’s Alzheimer’s. I can so relate.

Oh, I want to see that!! The Spanish Princess sounds good too even if it’s not accurate. Sometimes the exposure will awaken my curiosity and I’ll research obsessively.

If Netflix has a 30-day free trial at a time when the Bravo shows are slow you’ve got to jump in for a few weeks. Some of my favorites were The Crown, Ozark, Breaking Bad, The Keepers, Mindhunter (very dark but I tried to focus on the guys who created behavior science – fascinating), Schitts Creek is on Netflix now if you missed it, Dirty John (I think you saw that — there’s a great podcast too), Wentworth but the past season got too dark for me.

I watched all of these a while ago. Aside from Dateline and Bravo, I’m not watching anything regularly. Timely question for me.

Correction two The Con is on ABC. I went to NBC to see if I missed episodes and it wasn’t there. Instead I checked out Connecting it is about people talking in zooms during the quarantine. It’s a comedy. It is awful. I do not recommend it. The first episode is really stupid. I am watching episode three the last one (they are about 24 minutes) and the problem is I feel like I know all these idiots now. I have to see what stupid shit happens next. Again, NOT RECCOMENDING THIS. It is a complete waste of 24 minutes times three. It’s just I tend to stay in bad relationships for way too long and just need to see if it gets better.

Meanwhile, I Googled The CON on ABC and the one episode I saw was episode four, the royal weddingish one. I plan to catch up on that show in the middle of the night tonight. I have a ton to recap tonight and I have done no set ups and have not idea what I have to recap because I can’t check my DVR while watching this absurd connecting shit On Demand.

I do not have tv. I watch stuff on the computer. I got Amazon Prime on the cheap and watch the free with Prime stuff. I like PBS/BBC stuff so am watching Grantchester and Endeavor both of which I like very much. Also, a Prime original Utopia is fucked the fuck up and awesome. And, I watched the new Borat movie last night. It is insidiously cutting social commentary and the woman who played his daughter is fantastic. Watch just to hear about McDonald Trump and the pussy hound Mike Pence.

Housing and really grown, scary AF , teenage boys or young men starting going trick or treating (without costumes or little siblings) and I was too chicken to say anything to them so just stopped doing it which sucked for all the little kids)….

The folks and I discovered Yellowstone. Over the top soap opera where there really isn’t a totally likable character except for maybe the kid… I can’t watch too many before bed because it sometimes makes me anxious.

I am in LOVE with The Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Also the various “Secrets of the Zoo” series. Easily accessible on Disney+, but I also have seen them listed on the National Geographic Channel.

Oh, and I have started to gain back a taste for HW – started watching Orange County!!

I forgot Lifetime’s 24/7 holiday movie marathon kicked off already! I cannot believe we are here again. Last year was a cozy one, and I enjoyed having those silly things on in the background while I made all kinds of merry. This year, it’s not the same. Just the ads for them make me heave a huge sigh and roll my eyes. It actually kind of nauseates. This year is cancelled for me, if for no better reason than it sucks big hairy sweaty monster balls. It doesn’t deserve festive. This is 100% Grinch’s year.

Just finished “Lovecraft Country.” One of the best shows I’ve seen in awhile. It has some of everything in it, mystery, sci-fi, adventure, mythology, fiction, non-fiction, you name it. Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors and all the actors were superb in their roles. I would watch an episode several times because there is this group on YouTube that discuss the show afterwards, I call them ‘The Scholars.’ They would break down and dissect piece of the scenes, music, I mean which way the wind was blowing that day. Good show.

A guy I religiously follow told me I shouldn’t watch Lovecraft if I am too scared to watch Handmaids. (I told him what I could and couldn’t watch – that while I love Jaws and Poltergeist, Handmaids gave me nightmares as a BOOK and I was a bit freaked (but impressed) by Get Out and that had to watch during the day. He said it was legit some of the scariest shit ever.

-Lilyhammer. Steven Van Zant. (The same one) Hilarious! Stay for 3 episodes if you’re slow…weird concept, but belly laughing irony.
-Riviera. Great escape to France, Monaco underground art world and lifestyles of those other than moi!
-Outlander. Storyline can get crammed at end of each season, but characters, costumes, scenery, concept and relationships take you somewhere else.

Y’all. 90 Day Fiance the Other Way is my favorite show but I was dragging yesterday. I didn’t know how I would get through it I was so tired. But I was fine and I did and then I did Potomac and THEN I DID and emergency Wendy Williams recap and then I finally laid down. And I can’t sleep. I’m good sleeper and one of my shrinks once prescribed some sort of pill for me that was $20 for one pill because he thought I had narcolepsy. And I often think I do. I can sleep for 15 hours at times. But it made me really sick so that didn’t work.

I say all of this to say, I can sleep at any time at any moment and I am finally done recapping. I am exhausted. My everything hurts and I can’t sleep. WTF? ARGH this is a new thing.

I’ve been watching Fear the Walking Dead, the World Series, the young and the restless, some football, the first seasons of RHONY which are gold, and now I’m watching the 375th hurricane in the gulf. This one isn’t missing us though. At least it should be weak. Nothing says Halloween like taking down my decorations for a storm and making treat bags during a hurricane. I was already late putting up decorations because of a hurricane! This is just beyond ridiculous. My mom wants me to wash everything that can be washed because of Katrina flashbacks. Im not worried too much regarding this one but the last Greek alphabet storm left some of Vicksburg without power for like 48 hours. Y’all. Vicksburg is four hours north of the Gulf. You just never know what a hurricane will do. Our suckass COVID denier superintendent sent out a phone call saying he didn’t feel the need to close the schools or release early today. Our high school is the county shelter!! There are plenty of ppl who will need shelter but this fucker is of the belief that he’s rich and special because God loves him most and apparently god just doesn’t care about those in mobile homes or those who live along the 500 various waterways nearby. Did I mention that I hate it his guts?

The morning damage survey is going to be interesting but I’m most thankful that I don’t have a tree through my roof or water in my home so I’m good. Cant wait to read some recaps and catch up on some shows. I’m still shocked by the wind readings recorded before we lost all contact. I’m sending all of the prayers to the gulf coast. None of us were expecting a storm this large let alone a storm that maintained cat status for hours upon hours. Unheard of for late October.
