The visual effect of all those flags representing a life lost, a family devastated, a friend lost, is so heartbreaking. Yet the Administration in charge continues to push the “all clear” narrative.

VOTE like your lives depend on it because it does. If the Senate maintains control, they will push the repeal of Obamacare and then every single person who has had COVID(6,000,000 & counting) will be considered as having a pre-existing condition and treatment for Covid complications will not be covered. Repeal of Roe v. Wade will be next. Then repeal of gay marriage rights. VOTE!

“Lies and exaggerations “ seem to be your cult leader’s specialty. And I guess ignoring this memorial is par for the course of it kills “virtually nobody”. This is the new normal in the United States of America so I am unclear as to how you can refer to it as the fault of the “liberal land “. Last time I checked, the actual sitting president is not a liberal Democrat.

The scary part is that there’ll still be many more of these flags. Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt but it is an effective coping mechanism for some. And at what point does the idea of manslaughter factor into the equation? The virus is an equal opportunity killer and has no political affiliation. Many of the tiny flags represent a death of a trump supporter. (Yet the first line healthcare workers continue to risk their own lives and care for their covid patients indiscriminately)

        Carry on …

May all the souls who were unnecessarily taken too soon Rest In Peace.

Ours isn’t the only country with a nationalist leader who chooses to ignore the science in favor of denial. Without fail the countries with leaders who shut down early, established a national mask policy, ramped up testing, and turned their government employees into armies of pandemic fighters, while staying shut down until the numbers indicated a safe opening are doing better in terms of fewer deaths per capita.

It’s less about Democrats versus Republicans and more about who has not effectively handled this virus. Many of these deaths, and my latest understanding is we would have 120,000 – 140,000 fewer dead if we had the right leader at the helm – were unnecessary and will only continue until someone else becomes President. RIP, to my beloved cousin and my friends who are represented here. Thank you Tamara for helping to honor them.

I’ve read that Ebola is much easier to get than COVID. The pandemic plan put in place made it so there was only TWO Americans who died from it. 2!

The administration actually improved the plan based on that – that is the plan that Trump cancelled and fired the team. Biden expressed concern about this in OCTOBER.

This is beyond sad and heartbreaking. I do not understand the people who say that covid was a conspiracy to dethrone Trump. Does that mean the entire medical community was in on it? And the nursing home patients and staff? And the people who died from it? How stupid are people? Nevermind, don’t answer that. I’m in Orange County (newport beach) and the amount of maskless people here are mind boggling. My husband has been yelling at people who don’t wear masks. He went to Pavillons a few weeks ago and yelled at someone for going the wrong way down the aisle. I’m not letting him go anymore. He doesn’t need the stress with an already bad heart!! You can’t change stupid. What did Judge Judy say? Beauty fades, dumb is forever!!!

This year has been a real test of our fortitude as humans. Yes, we are a spoiled bunch with our heat and air conditioning (sarcasm) but have all been put to the test this year. Let’s just keep it together and NOT use TT’s forum to divide even more. I like coming here reading everyone’s opinions without attacking each other, unlike other forums! Thanks TT!

It’s not picking and choosing who it kills. And anyone who thinks that this is still a hoax against that dumb Orangutan is a total fool. And ignorant! I never wish death upon anyone, but to those people that think it’s “Fake/False news, I hope you or someone you love catches it and has to deal with the overall agony of feeling like they are dying. Sometimes a direct hit is the only way a person can learn. This is MY OPINION.

I remember going to see the quilt at the Aids traveling memorial ( when I was only mid twenties young gay & hyper aware of the Aids crisis ) & found it profoundly moving as well as healing. May all the people who have lost their lives ( or the lives of friends & family ) be honored remembered & acknowledged internationally. God rest your blessed souls & please linger amongst us in blissful repose watching over the rest of the planet as we valiantly fight this awful virus. It has done more damage stolen more lives & decimated the entire world . As scary as these times are we have got to take care off each other & hold each others hand. Love to all reading sharing laughing hurting & crying here. We got this. Have faith. Be strong

This. Is. What. We. Need. Now.

Compassion. And What’s So Funny ‘bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?

The flags bring home the numbers in the same way that the Vietnam Memorial did (and I only saw the traveling smaller model). It was overwhelming. The way the AIDS quilt did. Also overwhelming. At the Auschwitz concentration camp, there were HUGE glass display cases filled with things taken from the incoming prisoners: One had eyeglasses, one contained shoes, another artificial limbs, etc. The number of objects in each “tank” were overwhelming and hit you in a visceral way that reading numbers did not. Then … our guide told us each display held the things taken IN ONE DAY. No words.

HOW CAN ANYONE looking at those flags not be moved? Why do people think it’s a hoax? Do they think the numbers are false, or that the disease is “just” a “worse flu” or what? It is staggering how people can think it’s overblown. Remember, EACH FLAG represents 10 people who died of Covid-19 in the U.S.There are 10 TIMES as many dead than there are flags.

I didn’t realize that each flag represented ten deaths. This makes the image even more powerful. I’m imagining if each had a headstone it would look much like Arlington cemetery. It’s almost incomprehensible and makes me want to cry. Again.

      Marc,

I was a first year teacher when part of the quilt came to my school. It was DEFINITELY my school – it was also my alma mater, so the other teachers took me under their wings even more than what they might have for another 1st year teacher.

It was on display in the common area. I was a part time teacher but there full time (I was teaching yearbook). I remember spotting a teacher just sitting there. She was a “fan favorite” among her students, but I didn’t take her classes when I was a student myself. (She did a lot of the peer support groups formations, etc. Taught psychology among other things).

I don’t remember if I struck up a conversation or she invited me to sit down as we studied the coffin sized panels. What I do remember is that I said something like there wasn’t an organized schedule of students coming to view them, and her telling me not to worry, that kids will come. I also remember thinking she seemed melancholy, but it was incredibly sad to see those lovingly made quilts, full of life and personality.

She pointed out one. Told me that it was for an alum of my school. I didn’t know him; but he had been her student. Students did trickle in.

Now, I always strongly suspected, even as a student, that she was a lesbian. My district had multiple cases like that and had a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy before Clinton made that a thing. There was just an unspoken rule to never discuss it. I experienced it as a student and later witnessed an incident where kids who were discussing two teachers that were pretty much a couple elbowed and shushed each other when the topic inadvertently came up.

What I realize now? She was holding vigil over those quilts, and by default, so did I briefly. Those kids wandering in? Probably probably part of the LGBTQIA community, with A standing in for ally if they had a loved one at risk of the AIDS crisis and homophobia.

The flags are nice – but used for so many things. Those quilts were PERSONAL.

I don’t want to take away from that time, but perhaps it is time to resurrect that form of protest for the victims of COVID. Spread each quilt over the White House lawn, up the steps of the Capitol, etc.

Members of the military are required to wear face masks, at home and abroad. If this was a made up virus, and masks didn’t help, why would they be made to wear them? They rare usually very healthy and must undergo many different types of tests before joining and are required to maintain a certain level of fitness during duty. Many Americans are sadly unaware that outside of this country, many people don’t give a rats behind who is in charge…Although it has been proven by multiple American agencies that Russia has continually interfered and that our president doesn’t care that Putin has bounties on the lives of service members. It’s funny how people can call themselves patriots but act anything but. For all these people that think the whole world is totally focused on our President, please name all the European leaders you can, without Google. Then, list out their titles and job function. We used to be the “world’s cool, big brother” but now we are “the world’s cool, big brother that got hooked on meth and steals from family”…It’s a sad time. I’m not proofreading, so forgive mistakes.

I am not sure how anyone can support this wanna be dictator. He is going to encourage the morons to take to the streets and shoot people. Ordinarily the two candidates ride together to the white house.

    This virus doesn’t just kill.
It can cause permanent lung and heart damage.
It affects children differently. They have more likelihood of surviving but are prone to getting other dire complications like Kawasaki,s disease. Children who catch and survive the virus should be closely monitored for months after.
Some survivors actually become long haulers and stay sick for a long time.
The antibodies with this virus are not “strong” and so survivors can’t catch it again. This means herd immunity is going to be nearly impossible.
And when this virus mutates it will be like all viruses and come at us with new, different, and potentially more deadly symptoms
Coved 19 is a corona virus. There has never been a successful vaccine for any kind of corona virus. For instance the common cold is a corona virus There has never been a cure for the common cold because corona viruses are tough. I am finding it hard to believe that science has suddenly and miraculously come up with a vaccine when we can’t even cure the cold or take an injection to stop eradicate colds
Dying isn’t the only horrible thing about this virus. So many survivors are telling us that they are suffering terribly and this is not a joke nor should we take it lightly. Survivors are begging us to stay safe and at the very least to wear a mask.
Healthcare professionals are begging us to continue to flatten the curve so our healthcare system isn’t overrun and so they can take care of the people with Covid while also dealing with all the normal medical problems.
But there are those amongst us who piss away our knowledge of how to slow down a pandemic. They do it with bravado…with pride! I saw a picture of a woman carrying a sign during a protest basically saying she would rather bury her whole family to the virus than to have her family give in to fear and wear a mask! I just cannot imagine that level of stupidity and fanaticism.
My heart goes out to the loved ones of all who have died. My thoughts are especially with children and vulnerable family members who live with or around virus deniers. And I send a huge thank you to the brave frontline medical workers who put their lives on the line everyday to take care of people during a pandemic that is completely out-of-control in this country! I do not know where they find the strength to carry on in the face of such ignorance. They are heroes.
I would ask that everyone also keep a kind thought for the approximately 40 million Americans who face immediate eviction into homelessness if the moratorium against evictions is completely lifted. When our government completely lifts that moratorium we are going to show the world just how fucking cruel we can be. Shame on us.
May memories of those who have died from Covid be a comfort to their loved ones.
