Open Forum: A Very Unwelcome Visitor

September 22, 2020 by tamaratattles 93 Comments

A few minutes ago, I was sitting on my couch working on the site and looking out the window. There is a large tree just outside. Usually, squirrels play on the tree, some days there are woodpeckers. It normally quite relaxing to watch animals playing on the tree.

I am shaking as I type this. Tonight a GIANT OWL swooped down on the tree and landed. It looked straight at me for five or more long minutes. It just stared at me. It was terrifying. I am still terrified. It was the biggest owl I have ever seen. When I lived in Athens, GA while going to college, there was a small outdoor sort of mini zoo. I used to like to go watch the otters play. There was also a bear I think. Just a few other things including a lot of caged birds. There were two or three owls. I would basically close my eyes to avoid them and get to the otters. I was terrified even though they were in cages.

RHOBH Recap

The giant owl had the most terrifying face. I’m so nervous right now I may throw up. I have never seen a wild owl in this neighborhood in the many years I have lived here. Stupidly, I googled owls and apparently when an owl comes to visit he is warning about DEATH and/or EVIL. As if 2020 didn’t already suck enough.

So um, how was your day? There is nothing to recap tonight so I thought I’d put up an open forum. Take it away…

I’m terrified for you . I don’t know how you guys live in the south. I don’t like bugs or wild animals and they are everywhere. I want to retire to VA, NC or GA but I can’t because every time I visit those states I see some type of bug or animal never seen before in the Midwest and I freak out.

About that owl.. I would call the city but again you’re in the south so that may be a waste of time. I suggest closing your curtains/blinds and ignore it unless it tries to get in.

Ha! It’s mostly squirrels and chipmunks and pretty birds here. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen any chipmunks in a while. I think I know what happened to Alvin, Theodore and Simon. Sigh. They have burrowed the hell out of my front lawn and eaten hunks out of tomatoes and then… nada. I much rather have chipmunks than OWLS though. And with my sleep schedule, Banjo goes out a lot in the middle of the night. The other night he went crazy at something. Now I am worried about letting him out at night.

FUCK! Just saw a commercial for college with an owl. This is becoming a huge phobia. As if I needed another mental health issue.

Ugh! I was thinking the same thing. But my grandmother told me any bird that hot your window or tapped on it meant death around you, not you. 2020 just got better for me! I was fired today because I dared to expect what I was promised when I took a new job 5 months ago. Single mom with a child with special needs and an ex that would make any other sane woman turn into Betty Broderick. I’m sorry TT. I have nothing to give you to spin this into a positive except that when I read your recaps I laugh and when I read the comments, I feel less alone. So thank you!

I do not believe in omen type stuff. We have owls that live/hang out in our trees and I love them. They keep mice and snakes away. I can hear them hooting at each other late at night and I love to just sit on my back porch and listen to them.
My husband’s family are from Central & South America and they are superstitious about owls and some even say they grew up being told owls were witches or spies for witches. They all think I’m crazy for loving our owl occupants….or maybe they think I’m a witch lmao

I’m from the Midwest and we say a sparrow is a harbinger of death. My husband and I went to my mother in laws on the way to visit his dad in the hospital. When we opened the door a sparrow flew into the house, at night, during a snowstorm. Talk about being freaked out.

Yeah, I have always heard that a bird getting inside the house is a sign of death.

If I had just seen an owl flying over AT A DISTANCE I would have probably thought it was cool. But this owl came within feet of me. Landed quickly and STARED ME DOWN. I just sat there trying to decide if I should close the curtains but worried it might come to the window. I can’t even explain to you how creepy it was. The face that was staring straight at me was terrifying.

I’ve never seen an owl around here before. But I have seen these giant birds of prey. Vultures maybe or I dunno. But one year one of them came into my front yard and stole the baby robins out of the nest. The daddy bird went after them and the mama bird cried almost a human cry for hours. That was depressing as hell.

Yup, owls and armadillos are creepy as hell. I am still spooked about an owl I saw 10 years ago. It was a snowy night and something caught my eye. I looked and it was a white owl which riveted its head a la Exorcist and stared me down. ?

Hear me out, I studied a little witchcraft here and there. The owl has witchy energy, like Harry Potter. But it goes with the crone, who is the wise, female energy that don’t need no man.

Witches are the only feminist symbols who don’t need men to be powerful, and that’s why they are de-sexualized into crones. Crones are powerful and terrifying. That owl knew it’s own.

And come on, I know you got a witchy streak and a crone streak in you!!!

My grandmother from France had 45 million superstitions. If a wild bird flies inside, it means some one is going to die. Someone ALWAYS is dying … My uncle brought me a peacock feather once (when they were really difficult to get, no internet, not sold in import stores) and she made him hang it outdoors.

There are as many good beliefs about owls as bad ones. Remember women who knew about healing with herbs and plants were once thought witches.

If there had been an owl in my backyard, it would have taken care of the roof rats and I might still have my little ringneck Chupee.

One thing about owls is that some of them are HUGE! Couple that with the shock and that made it scary. But they won’t chase you like a mocking bird or crow defending their nests. Probably, it is ridding your yard of pesky varmints. The reason they say “wise old owl” is that they are smart.
Where I lived in the Bay Area, there was a wildlife rescue place, the Lindsay Museum. There was a beautiful barn owl named John, who could not be returned to the wild. I used to visit him. He really liked me too. Definitely, there are bird people who are simpatico with birds and those who are not. Birds like me and I like them. But LOTS of people are creeped out or scared by birds. I LOVE TwinkietheParrot on IG. He is the yellow version of my bird.

I love my woodpecker family that comes every year. So there is that. I love the robins who make babies in my shrubs. But I do not want to touch a bird. Or HAVE ONE LAND ON MY HEAD like every bird lover I have ever know says will not happen and it does every time. I do not want to touch a bird. Or live in a house with a bird. HOWEVER… if I ever make it out to visit you… I MIGHT touch a chicken. Like 12% of me wants to have chickens. lol. I feel like chickens have my personality. They can be lovely, or they may peck you to death. Also I do not eat eggs.

I am worried that the owl came for Banjo…. And now that he goes out a lot in the dark I am worried.

How much does Banjo weigh? I got the impression that he was a medium to large dog. I heard an owl in my yard and was afraid for my Jack Russel, but not worried about my Golden Retriever.
I think the thing that may in part be so spooky about owls is that they are such effective predators. When you looked him in the eye, you were looking in the eye of a predator and if you were smaller he would have considered you prey.
I think owls are beautiful but they are intimidating also. Especially the big ones. When you are in their presence you can just feel that you are in the presence of a predator.

Exactly what I was going to write. It sounds like you have a Great Horned Owl, SWS, and I think that is probably what Tamara saw. Though Barred Owl is also a possibility. Owls can see during the day, contrary to some folklore, so it probably was looking at its reflection. I’m a birder and I worship owls, but I understand it was upsetting when it ate the Robin nestlings. I always consider an owl sighting good luck.

It’s possible this is a young owl looking for a nesting area. Or, it’s regular roosting spot was disturbed by people–many people going out into nature these days!

There is just something about the way an animal can look at us as though it can see into our very soul..
I had a cat, “Electra” and whenever I was upset, no matter where she was in the house, she was come running to my side. Quickly too. She could be dozing two floors away & it was if she sensed my upset & she’d come running. She’d find me crying and try to soothe me. I know it sounds over the top but it’s true. She was the most amazing cat…This covid is getting to me, I wish she was still around.

Yeah. So. Where to begin. I was reading and catching up. Owls during their mating season can be vicious. Runners be warned. I have that on my very huge list of reasons why I don’t jog or run. Next. Flying roaches. I may regret sharing this, but I have stories. On several vacation excursions, they seem to fly at me. Several long stories…but back to owls. Maybe it was a sign of protection?
Now I’ll go check the house for spiders. Awful this year…or maybe it is just that I’m home all the time now working remote and notice more. I have essential oils to repell and the other more aggressive sprays to kill, if needed. But going outside the other day was like a horror show with spiders galore. Husband is a big baby about spiders and is not helpful when roaches land on me (happened while on vacation, no lie). I already regret over sharing but whatever. Maybe it has happened to others; nevertheless, awful creatures those roaches.

It has 450 birds needing homes. I am taking the classes and attending the online adoption events so I can rescue a Mickaboo bird. I want two — not breeding, just for company. I’ve had birds off and on for 65 years, all but the first one rescues. LOTS of updated info since the olden (sunflower seeds only) days. We always gave ours veg and fruit. My ringneck was THE SWEETEST of all of them. I think it is indicative of the ringnecks, who have gotten a reputation as not good pets. They are good pets.

Sadly I found a dead bird among my cacti and desert rocks a couple days ago. My neighbor across from me found two more dead birds. Different species. I read migrating birds along many Southwestern U.S. corridors are dying due to climate change. Not enough water or bugs. They fall out of the sky.

I am leaving bowels of water outside and I notice many birds enjoying it. Personally it’s snakes I can’t even think about. So I get it about that owl staring at you.

Another neighbor created a scarecrow they hang in their tree. So many birds. Some of us welcome them but they’re not for everyone.

Yes twin owls are an open of death but not always a physical death. As in tarot cards since the14 th century death represents so many other things.I interpret the owl as a sign that you will soar. All the old energies all the old doubts fears insecurities (which we all at one time or another are afflicted with) are coming to an end. I am your Italian Cathloic twin trust me I am really good at all things symbolic & spiritual. This is a good sign. Embrace it. I know it sounds crazy but I know you & would never steer you in the wrong direction. CONGRATULATIONS things just got a whole lot better for you & your recent struggle ( like the rest of us ) will make it thru this fn soul crushing heartbreaking & seriously depressing experience
    xo

Now I wonder what people will make of the TWO owls on the Masked Singer! I wonder if it’s the Bella Twins.

I’ve been telling The Fiancé that Masked Singer is on the opposite trajectory than Dancing With the Stars. DWTS is getting the D-list as Masked Singer probably is getting better talent as it goes (for now) on. The pandemic would be the perfect time for people who couldn’t do it in normal times because of filming TV and movie obligations to do it. Plus, no one could keep track of their secret journeys or time MIA. So this season might be the best yet. The costumes are outrageous.

I was wondering if anyone would mention The Masked Singer. I have a few thoughts on a couple of them. What do you think about The Lips? Too obvious?

I am so sorry it frightened you, Tamara. Owls are actually good omens; they eat varmints including my least favorite varmint, the snake. With an Owl in your yard you don’t have to have a kitty. If you had several kitties, you’d be snake and varmint-free and have a few buddies to keep you and Banjo company.
    Love to you, Miss T

I caught a little bit of Wendy Williams yesterday. She was giving me major Anna Nicole vibes and it kinda bummed me out. She seemed like her motor skills were extremely slow. Very odd to watch. Also the show went to commercial every 30 seconds which was annoying!

I watched Wendy too. I had a different impression especially on her first day back. She seemed….better to me. But she is still really pushing the whole, I can get a man, I want a man, I am fucking men, agenda that seems directly aimed at Kevin. Who she actually calls by his real name now which is KeLvin. She’s lost a lot of weight and looked really good. But I think there are still some mental health issues she needs to deal with before getting into another relationship.

You NAILED it! I was trying to think of who/what WW reminded me of. It was the sad Anna Nicole days. I wish WW could just heal her heart and THEN find a man. Opening your heart when you are vulnerable on places like Tinder is asking for heartache. Then again, MJ met Tommy on one of those, so there are some good things that can come out of it.

So about this owl…how about we go to Harry Potter World in Orlando? Oh, that’s right we’re stuck trying out best not to get the Covid. Thanks Donald. If he tried to “grab me by the *****” he would have no hand left. Seriously, owls are ok. Not my favorite, but then again I’ve never had a state-down with one.

OMG, I am laughing so hard reading everyone’s replies. Frankly, I don’t really care for birds. I do like egrets tho and herons. Owls freak me out. Their eyes are too big and that whole neck thing. I don’t believe in superstitions tho, otherwise we all should be preparing for the end of the world! Just watch a comedy or something and try not to think about it. Or how about thinking how stupid Captain Sandy is by trying to out Malia!!

Wow freaky! That is a very wild feeling I had 2 come sit on each end of my porch for 3 or more nights in a row. We had some baby chicks and we think that’s what they were after so needless to say the chicks had to go.

This is so weird because this morning when I was working on the deck, a huge Hawk came out of a nearby tree and swooped/hovered around disconcertingly close to me. I could see his talons extended and I’m 90% sure he was trying to grab my small cat, and then saw me and the bigger cat and changed his mind. Are birds one of the 7 plagues or something??

In my belief system, owls mean wisdom, protection and navigating the night. In ecological terms, they mean a healthy ecosystem. I love them and see them only ever as good omens

TT, I’ve said a prayer for you, that if it is an evil omen, that it be rebuked in the name of Jesus, and that God put a hedge of protection around you, and to keep you from any hurt, harm or destruction. It might have been a coincidence, but there’s never a reason to not pray, you are covered.

Now, let’s get to Big Brother!!!! <3
