No one can possibly be mad at RBG. She earned the right to a peaceful and painless end of life. If you listen to her statement, it is clear she tried her hardest to hang on until we get a new President. She had planned to retire in 2016 and was hoping the first female President would choose her successor.

RBG had a long and seemingly happy life until passing at age 87. I’m not trying to make light of the situation because that’s not my nature, but sadly, we all have to go sometime. I hope she’s happy wherever she now is and is cancer-free finally. That poor woman batled 3 different cancers and horrible cancer treatments – I would not wish that on my worst enemy. At long last, her battle is over and she can rest.

I think you’re missing the much bigger point than how “happy” she is in death. She’s Jewish, if you didn’t know, and we believe that it’s all about life here on earth, not an afterlife, and today is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, our new year, so please spare me the religious platitudes.

That comment is harsh. However, she made the most of her life on earth. A person that dies on Rosh Hashana is a righteous person. I don’t think anyone can deny that.

To be fair to Deb? I have been reading a shit ton of strongly Christian influenced platitudes about our RBG, some from far leftests that didn’t vote for Hillary because they were pissed Bernie wasn’t given the nomination. So while I don’t think the original comment meant any harm, I’m sympathetic to Deb.

I’m not Jewish, but grew up with a BFF who is. We are still close at 49 years old. I’ve learned through the deaths of her beloved parents (oh, how I miss them too!) that how we honor loved ones passing is doing good things for the world, for the living, in their honor. Mitzvahs. One of those first acts for the family members who lost a loved one is taking a shovel and shoveling dirt on the coffin. When I did that for my “other Mom”… it was a out of body experience.

We can’t do that for Justice Ginsberg and her family. That is up to their personal friends. But what can we do?

We can write to our Senators about NOT filling her position until after 1/20/2021. We can donate to key Senate races (to the Democratic candidate of course) to flip the Senate. We can give to the ACLU (whom she used to work for). We can find a local scholarship to donate to in her name, especially if it helps someone who belongs to a marginalized community (BIPOC or women or LGBTQ… sorry white dudes). We can volunteer for any number of campaigns.

We can vote as early as possible in our state, and make sure our vote is counted.

RBG was first diagnosed with cancer in the NINETIES. She fought, and won. She lost her husband to cancer in 2010, and went to work the next day. Even recently, she worked from the hospital.

So we can do these small things in her honor. We can grieve tonight (I’m drunk as fuck if you can’t tell… polished off a bottle of wine) but soon we need to get to work as she would have.

May her memory be for a blessing.

If only there were millions more like her instead of like him. May we all survive the wannabe Nazi in the White House. May those few senators with an R next to their name have the courage to do the right thing re RBG’s replacement. We know trump and mcconnell will not do the right thing.

You are welcome. I’m glad I wasn’t stepping on toes, but I feel like just like we shouldn’t expect Black Women to always have to be the ones to save us or teach us at emotional cost, I feel the same about other minorities or marginalized groups. But I also don’t want to screw up or have my voice be more important than others.

Oh, L’Shana Tova. I know the loss of RBG is especially hard with her passing on Rosh Hashanah – well, bittersweet I am sure.

I’m praying we all get a sweeter year.

You’ve given us some great ways we can give back in honor of the Notorious RBG. Sometimes I really need someone else to show me how to re-focus my negative energy, I’ve been overwhelmed.

RBG had a great, dry sense of humor so I’m going to try and focus on that while I contact my Senators.

3 have come out already. But at least two have flip flopped in the past.

There is a possibility mentioned that if Mark Kelly wins on November 3rd, he would be sworn in on November 20th (has something to do with his opponent simply being a seat filler for John McCain.

We need people in the states where their R Senator would be uncomfortable with this injustice to CALL THEM. Deluge them with letters, emails, etc. I think Romney might be convinced. Oh, ad those who have R senators who have also said we need to wait, call them and THANK THEM.

We also need donations to certain key elections where the Dems running against incumbent R senators, and to Doug Jones so he keeps his seat. I’m not sure McGrath has a chance against that asshole Mitch McConnell, but Lindsey Graham is on shaky ground.

So much to love about that inspiring lady! I hadn’t read anything about her health battles this last month, and that’s unusual. I bet anything she argued the best legal points possible with God – telling Her why she needed another few months. The only argument Ruth ever lost. Thank you for sharing her with us as long as was possible.

I find life a bit less hopeful and know that’s not how RBG would want it so this weekend I will try to do something noble in her honor. Haven’t figured out what yet…RIP RBG.

This is just such awful news, she was always such a heavy duty fighter which is a reason so many have looked up to her. All the rights she fought for and won, so many achievements made by her. I feel for all my american friends, you seem to be really taking the hits this year. I usually only ever and pretty much always watching cnn and msnbc but I had to see what fox was saying about the news tonight and naturally Tucker is already talking with some guy about how they figure they can replace her by november 3rd, you’ve got to be kidding me, this lady just passed and they are already planning this is just sickening to me. I hear her last words on this matter was that she wanted them to wait til the next president is sworn in before they replace her, but how likely is trump and his merry band of fools going to want to wait, exactly. They are lacking every human feeling a normal person possesses. This is like a kick in the stomach and what it is most likely to mean for american women is terrifying. My heart is with you all. So you know, I’ve already posted about RBG as the beautiful woman she was below, but…

I’m sorry, Callipatti, but how have you not heard of her battle with cancer? You seem to be confused about several things in this post. You are an OG poster, like myself, so I’m wondering what that’s about.

For the record, I do not see three things ever going away: Pro-Choice, LGBT rights, and Right to bear arms. Period and as it should be.

You can’t really call out a lifetime politician for changing his/her/their mind. Biden has been back and forth, whichever way the wind blows, for 47 years. That’s kind of the appeal for Trump voters, they don’t want a “politician” to say one thing to get elected and then does another.

I saw something positive tonight. A truly peaceful gathering on the steps of the Supreme Court. May these peaceful gatherings replace the violent gatherings we’re now immune to.

        BeetsWhy,
I’ve had my own family problems for the past 6/7 months, I try not to listen to the news.

it has been in the plans to reverse Roe V. Wade since his win in 2016. Why do you not know this?
Remember the deal he made with certain top Christian leaders about allowing them to help make up a list for judges and he would pick from that list if they gave him the support he needed?

That is the reason for appointing the very conservative judges. This is the reason the Christian right has been supporting him. They consider abortion against God etc. Trump is the first President who has supported their cause in years. I understand their point if view but not all people in our country pray to the same idea of God’s laws.
I support the 2nd amendment with the exception of the semi automatic’s. It is in no danger of going anywhere.
They want to reverse the marriage equality rights. They don’t want to roll back all LGBT rights just the one on marriage. I doubt that will happen but I do think they have a good chance to flip
Roe v. Wade with a new judge.

In 47 years iwe have changed in how we see and think of social issues. I hope Biden has changed. Biden is not important, he will do no damage.
Trump said a few nights ago he supports insurance for pre- existing conditions yet he has lawyers in court right now fighting to get that reversed so it won’t be included in his new insurance plan.
He constantly lies to us about everything. His lies about Covid since February. is criminal. He cost so many lives. This is not a Biden or Trump choice, this is our Constitution v. Trump.
You do know Varr has calked for the Mayor of Portland to be charged with sedation . That is misuse of his office but again nothing new there with a Trump man. Don’t you care about the rule of law?

Not being a politician might be okay but not a man whose self interest is his priority..
Barr is working for Trump. How is that okay?

Protecting the constitution, our country and when needed protecting us should had been his priority.
Have you looked at out national debt recently?
I know none of that matters to a Trump supporter.
BTW, Portland was 6 blocks not the whole city. If Trump had been quiet it would had been over.

        I’m getting off this post,
What a mess we left the next couple of generations.

Calipatti, apologies if I over stepped with my other comment. I’ve had some personal losses myself yet have not been brave enough to share here. (I seem to just release my anger here as it is therapeutic although probably not productive.) It hit a nerve and my heart goes out to you.

Also, you are not “confused “. Your post/comment is entirely on point. Le sigh.

        Beets,
idk what your deal is lately but you seem to be making things really personal lately. It’s one thing to be able to scroll past your political ramblings when they aren’t attacking someone else. As you stated above, you and calipatti are OGs like myself. Calipatti is one strong woman who can take care of herself. She is not one to bring her own tragedies into the conversation. But as an OG, how could you not know that she has lost a child and almost lost her home as she was evacuated and watched her neighborhood burn down in the fires? Your comment would have been just fine up to the point where you wrote “…but,”

Please Try and be a little mindful of others in the future. Attacking another woman in personal pain is not honoring RBG in any way. She has not made a big deal about any of her personal loss but that doesn’t mean she is not human.

Also, your relating of your thoughts of replacement are irrelevant since you will be voting for trump again. Please take a seat for a hot minute and let the rest of us grieve in peace. The loss of RBG is a tremendous one. Thanks in advance.

May RBG RIP and may God have mercy on us all. 🙏

RBG was inspirational in so many ways, both legally and personally. I am a very left leaning Republican and I can say I agreed with just about every decision she wrote. I would love to see another woman of her caliber serve.

This is terrifying. RBG was our main throwback justice protecting us from the utter bullshit spewing from both political sides full of greedy, ridiculous, self-centered corruption.
History will count her as one of the greats.
May her memory be a comfort to all who love her. May her legacy guide young women to be strong and courageous. We are certainly going to need it.

This is a fucking problem!! Please donate to Amy McGrath’s campaign against Mitch McConnell in KY. Write postcards or letters. Join the fight. We’ve got to Ditch Mitch and Dump Trump. Mourn today but rally tomorrow. Put in your dissent collar and get busy. It’s what Ruth would want us to do.

Amen! I’ve been donating to Amy McGrath, Sara Gideon (Maine), and Jaime Harrison (South Carolina) for Senate. Writing postcards to get out the vote in Michigan and Maine (defeat Susan Collins). We need to take back the Senate and hold folks accountable.

CoolMama, my letters and postcards sent in support of Amy McGrath—KentuckY (KY)—only seem to reach Aunt Crazy Nancy Pants.

RBG did so much for women and minorities, she had followers on both sides of the aisle. We are all proud of that. If the tables were turned and the Democrats had the chance to name a third SCOTUS would they step back and say “no, thanks”? Would you? No.

Democrats wouldn’t have stolen the first Justice seat. So the question you ask is a false equivalency. Regarding Amy McGrath, you either know who she is or you don’t. You can’t make two comments that conflict each other like that and ware my time with a reasonable answer. I don’t expect much else from a Trumper, though. Your party is full of lies, hypocrisy, hate, and power hungry mongrels who care more about “owning the libs” than anything else. I can’t and won’t argue with that. I will wish you well, though. Life is hard in conspiracy land. We will welcome you back to the real world whenever you are ready.

    Sad. Upset. Angry. Scared.
That POS McConnell already back pedaled on his reason for not confirming Obama’s nomination on an election year and will fast track the next one through. All the while he has also been getting conservative judges confirmed as fast as he can.

Have you heard that Barr called for the Portland Mayor to be charged with sedation? Holy Crap.

People had better wake up fast and realize exactly what’s at risk here before it’s too late! No soul Mitch announcing there will be a vote on her replacement hours after the passing of an American icon, a legend, a fighter for all that’s right in the world, is so unbelievably disgusting. I pray her final wish will be granted. I’m very scared that it will not.

The most tragic part? She and she alone put us here. In 2014, Dems had lost the House, were losing the Senate, and Obama was term-limited. She (and Breyer, for that matter) refused to step down, despite being asked, interviewed on the subject, at 80 years old and having had cancer, including pancreatic, twice. The future was not bright for Dems to get another shot at a nominee for a few presidential terms. She actually asked who could be better than her? Any Obama appointee would be better than what we’re about to get, who’s going to, with the help of years of Republican district and circuit judges, etc, get busy reversing her entire judicial legacy.

She was a brilliant lawyer and a great jurist who did more for women than almost any other single person in our history. But she refused to pass the baton when there was a teammate available. She thought she could finish the race alone. Now we all lose. We’ll see just how much.
