Last night, I had ONE JOB. All I had to do was a MDLLA recap. I was tinkering with an upcoming exclusive but it was more than my brain can handle. So I was all ready to actually get one of these recaps out on the day the show aired. I got Banjo settled and sat down fifteen minutes into the show, only to discover that the DVR did not record. My DVR is crapping out. I’m trying to pretend like it is going to get better, because I have shows on there I don’t want to lose, like my Anthony Bourdain shows. So anyway, I am ready to roll now.
James & David
These two have a new listing that they previously had a bit over a year ago. After a month on the market, the owners decided they could not part with their family home. The house is in Santa Monica a just a short walk from the beach. The house is almost 7,000 square feet and very cute. The want a smaller house on the beach. The backyard is amazing, and there is a great artist’s studio in the back. I love this house. But it’s way too big for me. The sellers are building a house. They list the house for just under 18 million.

It’s time to set up an Open House. They are doing a back yard BBQ to showcase the backyard. They are targeting families looking for room for their kids to play. Instead, what they get is an “intuitive astrologer” who is there to assess the vibes of the house for some actress. Because, Hollyweird. There were not a lot of people there, but those who were liked it. Even the astrologer. But where were the kids?
Josh Flagg
Josh has agreed to do a podcast with his new client, Rebecca who was on Glee. She is looking for house with a place with more room. She wants a place for her podcast, preferably in a separate space from the house. My brain is NOT functioning at all. I can’t spell simple words. And my eyes really don’t want to be open today. Flagg is taking her to see a Spanish house in the hills. She loves it. I love it. I don’t think we need to see anything else. The bathroom is not good. And she hates the podcast space. It does scream murder. So off they go to look at other places.

The next house is a Mediterranean. I still like the Spanish house better. The husband agrees with me. He likes the first house better. So it is on to house number three. House number three has a pool. It’s really cute. I think this is the one. They are still deliberating between this house and the first one. House number three is a lot more. So they agree on the first house. I knew it was the first house! They got the first house for $1.87 million. Then, Josh takes her to the murder room and her podcasts co-stars are there smudging the place.
Josh Altman
Josh and his brother are in The Birds Streets, his favorite neighborhood and also where he lives. This seems to be as good a place as any to mention that their new office has large than life sized statures of both of them made out of Lego. Um Why? I liked the mural last week. The Lego sculptures are just ridiculous. I don’t like the houses in this neighborhood. They are all those modern white boxy houses. I do like the back yard though. There is an entire gym in this house. All brand new equipment. Machines I’ve never even seen. The house was originally listed at $27 million. Josh wants to list it at just under $22 million.

The house gets an offer from a buyer who is on the exclusion list. It’s very low. And Altman won’t get a commission. He has 24 hours to find a higher offer from his own client list.
I love love love tamaratattles
I loved this episode. I love the Old Hollywood Spanish Colonial Modern homes the most. During my six months living in Silverlake (when it was cool, but cheap BEFORE it was THE COOL place), I used to drIve around every day to look at cool places. I walked the Raymond Chandler Hollywood tour — lots of hidden beauties. Whenever I see this show, I wonder how many were torn down to build those big white boxes. I am with Flagg, I’m gonna fro up if I see another. The Santa Monica house was lovely. The expensive explosion of excess (thanks for that Erika) leaves me cold. I wonder what was demoed to built that POS.
You know I used to hate these MDL shows but covid happened and I actually really enjoy this show now. So excited last week to see that LB property that will so be sold to a developer to put up apartments and shops. I lived there for years going to college, I would never in a million years think that area is worth that much but to be developed. Anywho on this weeks show, loved seeing the old Spanish homes and all their weird idiosyncrasies.
Tamara, not related to the show but your comment about your AB. Have you seen the documentary called Wasted about food waste in the restaurant industry that he produced? I was startled by a comment he made about something being depressing but not so much that you’d want to hang yourself in the shower. Apparently he’s made quite a few comments in his TV career about suicide.
I’ve seen mostly everything he’s made other than A Cook’s Tour which Im watching now. I may rewatch everything again and try to catch these comments. Not that I wouldn’t binge his shows again anyway, because goddamn I love him like you do but I wonder how he wasn’t helped. I know we are responsible for our decisions and that if someone wants to kill themselves they will. I just don’t know anyone else that’s famous that is recorded mentioning suicide as often as he is supposed to. It truly saddens me.
Sorry to sort of hijack this thread I just wanted to see if you were aware of this.
Ps, I recommended to you the HBO series I May Destroy You in another thread but don’t know if you caught it because that recap had hundreds of comments and I don’t know how you keep up.
After this comment I promise to stay on point. No easy feat with my scatter brain.
I love how much Flagg appreciates old architecture! I lived in Europe for some time and loved the fact that they didn’t tear down their buildings so readily, as we do! It’s such a great feeling to walk the streets and appreciate it all!
We now live in an original English Tudor, can you believe that? I don’t have a drop of English blood in my body that I know of. Life is funny. I do enjoy this show bc it is a change from the over the top drunken drama of some of the HW’S! LMAO Peace ?
I am with you Nancy. About two years ago, I developed this yearning for an old house to love and basically die in. We ended up with a 1930 arts and crafts/craftsman bungalow with many of the original architectural elements still in place. It meant moving to a more urban setting and into a transitional neighborhood and it was well worth it. I love this house and my neighbors. I hope this damn virus doesn’t muck up our Halloween.
I have Anthony Bordain shows on my dvr as well. I have watched his last one several times, and the ending is eerie and sad.
I could watch Flagg show old houses to people all day long. It should be a show. I love how a producer cursed him out when he tried to be sly.
I always wanted to live in a big old victorian; they dont have spanish architecture where I live. I then later on decided not a good idea because, obviously, haunted.
I just live in a development with split family houses that are all the same and about as old as I am. I love my neighbors though, so I am in no hurry to leave.
I know he looked ashamed for a sliver of a second?
I would choose Josh Flagg as my agent. His love of architecture and casual way of explaining the pros and cons of properties is enjoyable to watch. He seems authentic. I loved the cleansing of the “murder” room.
