Is Bravo/Andy Pandering To The Black Audience With a Black Lives Matter WWHL?

June 9, 2020 by tamaratattles 59 Comments

So I first noticed this sentiment from some of friends on Twitter. People seemed to be pissed that Andy Cohen of all people was suddenly against exploiting black people for profit.  cough RHOA cough other people commented that Porsha was on the show and thought the underground railroad was an actual train. I have been trying to tell you for years now, ever since Porsha was on Dish that she is faking her stupidity on RHOA for a paycheck and she is way smarter than we thought.

I also need to point out that Andy bought a house in the Hamptons recently and one of you sent me all the deets on that so thank you. You guys always have the scoop. All the rich people in NYC left and went to their summer houses and Andy basically bought his during the pandemic or perhaps slightly before. But he’s broadcasting from his summer home now. Guess he didn’t have the case for P-Town. 🙂

I Am SHOOKETH, Andy Shut Up

And yet, I went to mock Andy Cohen’s little Black Lives Matter event. Then I was the other guest was W. Kamau Bell. I love him! Then Andy mostly just shut up and let Porsha talk. She was fanfuckingtastic. She was articulate. She knows her shit. An Kamau just sat there nodding as she spoke and pointed down to her talking head box.

Porsha knows her shit. She has her FACTS. I was amazed by her intelligence. I KEEP TELLING YOU SHE IS FAKING STUPIDITY ON RHOA. And Kamau agrees with me! I’d love to here what you think of this WWHL episode. Kamau thinks that once the world opens back up and people can go to the movies and do things the white people will forget all about the black people. Do you? Porsha had very specific things about about what all people should do.

House Bill 636

Porsha talks about House Bill 636. She says, “If you go online, you can see my mug shots and there are two of them…” The bill will allow people to access any police officer with a history of excessive force. Kamau is just smiling and nodding and Porsha should marry him instead of Dennis. Kamau is a genius and if he is agreeing with Porsha she must be too. I’m NOT KIDDING. The man is brilliant. AND FUNNY.

Finally after a long, long, very fascinating conversation with Porsha Williams, Andy asks Kamau if he supports Bill 636.  He says he thinks he should just leave because Porsha’s got it from here. Andy says he is sitting here watching Kamau slowly fall in love with Porsha. Porsha says they can be best friends.

Kamau praises black women and it just makes me love him more. He has sat there patiently silently cheering Porsha on for the first two thirds of this episode. Now finally he speaks up regarding racism. He says that, “It is unfortunate that  a white person’s whisper is worth more than a black person’s scream.”  And if the white people had not shown up this would not be getting this kind of attention.

Kamau Rocks Plus What White People Can Do

Kamau suggests Kate Schatz for white people resources and I pulled this Google Doc for you. For those white people wondering what the fuck you can do, HERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS especially if you have kids.  Porsha suggests white people who want to do more go to SURJ. It’s for white people who want to help.

Finally, Kamau has a new season of United Shades of America. I love that show, if you haven’t watched previous episodes you should. Also am I the only one who gets subtitles that I didn’t ask for on all the Andy Cohen at home WWHL?

I started this post ready to dog Andy out for this since he loves exploiting the RHOA but he shut the fuck up and Porsha did and outstanding job. They are going to make it a two parter so if you missed tonight check it out tomorrow. Porsha is totally amazing. You know if I am telling you to watch anything Andy Cohen related, it’s important. He’ll probably win an award for this.

After I was doing all my posting crap I heard Porsha thanking Andy with regard to working with him. WHY DO ALL THE HOUSEWIVES STILL THINK THEY WORK FOR HIM. And Porsha’s spot on the show was ensured before this. But others have not been….story developing.

Maybe, just maybe Andy Cohen recognizes he’s been part of the problem. Maybe he’s seen something in Porsha a lot of people didn’t way back when. All I can say is I hope it lasts.

I watched Kamau’s series and really liked that he wanted to get everyone’s opinions, he was good at that.

I differ in his opinion of white people showing up. I felt like the 18-24 group of white people were, for the most part, uneducated. The interviews I saw with them across all the 24 hour news channels were vapid. They couldn’t answer basic questions about why they were there. I felt like they were Not there for the right reasons.

Many 18-24 year white kids have no real experience with huge societal issues like this. Many spend their lives in a bubble of childhood until they are 18, then go off to college for 4 years in a semi-independent manner. But they are still in a bubble. At least, this has been my experience in a working to upper class area. I don’t fault them for not having a firm idea of why they are there. If they are there and willing to learn, then that is great. If they are there to start trouble, go the f home. Sometimes its about optics and if there are thousands of white gen z kids out there, it makes the images more compelling. If the images of the huge crowds and massive support puts pressure on the legislators, then let the dumb kids come! Maybe they will learn something.

And I totally agree with Kamau’s sentiment of the white whisper vs the black scream. It is a sad state of affairs. Sad but true.

Tamara – if Porsha fakes being dumb for RHOA (which I totally believe), do you also think she fakes being aggressive and having anger management problems? Serious question, not being snarky.

Wow. I was so ready to read Andy to filth over this. Instead, he let Porsha and Kamau take the lead. And yes, Porsha really isn’t as dumb as she sometimes plays on RHOA.

I suspect Porsha thanked Andy on-air because she knows they have to maintain the illusion of Andy calling the shots on all things Housewives because the Comcast-NBCU executives don’t want us to think about how they really run Bravo and all their other networks. Since I don’t want to derail this thread, I’ll leave that there and instead praise Porsha and Kamau some more for redeeming WWHL (at least for this one night).

I watched but I wasn’t 100% focused. It is on my list to rewatch with full attention. I think that Andy knows that this is an important moment and if he was willing to give Porsha and Kamau a platform, with lots of white viewers, then good for him. Especially since they did SUCH a GOOD JOB delivering their message. So is it exploitative, probably not since I think that they got as much out of is as Bravo did.

    Looking forward to part 2!

TT, I was so hoping that you would speak about last nights episode of WWHL (thank you). I realized that Porsha was playing a part on RHOA when she was out there protesting and was interviewed. Last night she was AMAZING!! She really should run for office instead of being on RHOA, that likes to stereotype black women and show misogynist behavior. I really hope that one of them say’s Bravo needs to restructure all their shows, that would be a start. Fire (or cancel) most of the cast from VPN (Stassi, Kristen, Lala, Brittney and Jax). If they do not do something about Stassi and the crew than they are just blowing smoke up our asses.

They even filmed teen mom og episode around it, where she apologized to Chey for those past tweets and let her know Ryder would be okay with her! Soooo I am not understanding why they fired her. Well I do understand, they are trying to make a statement and appear to be with the movement. However, you rewarded Taylor with airtime for this same very topic a year ago..also, while we are at it, please fire amber portwood. The domestic violence is sickening and she’s rarely with her children! I’d rather watch just Gary and his wife on there with Leah.

I do not think that Matt and Brett should have been fired. They were young Neanderfucks when they (separately) made the comments and both have changed and grown since then. Max especially, including apologizing to his family, which includes his black grandfather. As young people, we sometimes say and do stupid things. Max and Brett seem TRULY sorry. Stassi and Kristen seem sorry they got caught.

Jax has said worse things about Faith than Stassi and Kristen. But his were more about FAITH, than about her being black. Stassi and Kristen made false reports to the police. They are lucky the statute of limitations has expired.

While I do not agree with the racist and mean things, if this is a reality show (cough, cough) about workers at SUR (cough, cough) and these things were not said on the show AND DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEW OF THE PRODUCERS, is that a fireable offense? If this is about THOSE PEOPLE in their private lives, should they be fired? For being their “real” selves.

What about Todd Krissley? Any of the shows that feature people who are RW Christian — hating on Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Catholic, etc. — will they be fired or canceled?

Bravo is just trying to LOOK GOOD. It could have DONE some good. Using examples of teachable moments.

Even Malcom X changed his stance against violence. (That’s when he was killed.) No longer out for violence but for TEACHING and INSPIRING inclusion and true justice and peace. “My mind is a lethal weapon.” is my favorite Malcom X quote. He knew we could change minds to think and feel differently and that is more powerful than bullets.

Nanette – love you bringing up Malcolm X (Malik el-Shabazz) His autobiography had a huge impact on me in college. That people CAN change and grow in their philosophies and beliefs especially.

fyi… I’ve never heard Todd Christley say anything that indicates he’s a right wing evangelical nutjob. I did hear him on Jeff Lewis’ show and other shows saying that he refuses to give oxygen to the “Todd is gay” rumors because that would imply that being gay is a bad thing. He may believe in Jesus, but I think socially and philosophically, he’s fairly open. The son tried to accuse him of being racist in regards to his granddaughter – but now the son is stabilized and changing his tune. And as someone who has watched the show – he adores that little granddaughter of his and I’ve not seen an indication that he believes that she’s an exception to the rule when it comes to BIPOC.

As a white woman in her early 50s (and still fabulous) I am living for these entertainment shows putting up some real content to make people think and to start conversations. Jimmy Fallon, Seth Myers and now Andy. I especially appreciate that every night Amber (on Seth’s show) would give a story of her personal experience with police to show the bias and and far reaching it is.

I love that Kamau said it’s time for white people to start talking about the systematic inequality within our own circles. So true!

And I’m also seeing lots of content on social media that the black lives matter movement needs to be inclusive of the black LGBTQ community as well.

Seeds of change are being planted, now let’s nurture them and help it grow.

I’ve not watched this WWHL – I’m kind of in a mental shutdown right now. I can’t read new books for some reason (and I’m a reader!) I’m rereading portions of books I’ve read before for comfort. I have this huge list of movies to watch with my parents (yes, I’m still quarantining with them) but I’ve now got my mom hooked on the early seasons of America’s Next Top Model (we’re on Season 4). I’m fishing in Animal Crossing constantly.

But I’ve seen Andy’s Instagram clips of Porsha on CNN when CNN didn’t even know who she was. She’s doing her granddaddy proud. I don’t think people GET who Hosea was. They need to watch Selma by the warrior Ava DuVernay. Seriously people… WATCH IT. Her grandfather is portrayed in it. A major player in the civil rights movement. I wish he was still here to stand with Representative John Lewis. I worry he’s going to get the Rona.

I’m not sure anyone knows how HARD that job is. It’s not showing out on RHOA where people follow whatever you do. It is way more complicated. And she is exceptionally good at it. Not Ditzy. I didn’t realize the first night who Kamau Bell is. I’ve eaten at that restaurant he mentioned in Berkeley where he was chased off by an employee for bothering some women at a table outside, one of whom was his white wife. Small world! I remember that incident very well, and the place changed hands shortly after the public outcry. Thanks so much for recommending we see WWHL cause I hadn’t planned to.
