Tomato Talk: With Lilies!

April 7, 2020 by tamaratattles 51 Comments

I know I keep promising to talk about my garden, but truth be told, as many of you have witnessed, I am really into preparing the dirt. Then I sort of fall off with all the fucking watering. So The rain has just begun here and mother nature is going to take care of it herself. I went out to look at the plants before starting this thread and weird things are happening. First of all, I usually only buy one “cheat plant.” The fifteen or twenty dollar ones that often already have fruit. They are hybrids and I like to be an heirloom gardener.

But here is the thing, even my heirloom plants seem to be flowering much too early. It’s like they know we need produce and are hurrying up or something. It’s weird. The plants are barely growing but they are flowering. God provides I guess.

Tomato TalkBut I need to thank you all for making me walk outside to check on the plants. Because I have beautiful yellow irises and purple irises and of course purple “money plant” So I have a beautiful arrangement in my house right now. And I would have never know it was happening because I couldn’t even get the trash our to the street today. So thank you. It’s a bit of a rough day for me.  And thank you all for still hanging with me. I really need you all right now so much.

I’m probably going to call it a night early tonight. I had nightmares last night and anxiety all day. I am doing the best I can, just like all of you. So hang with me if you can. You guys just showing up helps a lot. I appreciate you all. Thanks for being nice to the old crazy lady with a short trigger.

Now tell me about your gardens! Let’s keep it light in this one. I promise to give you another open forum soon. And all the venting threads are still just below this one. xo ~tt

As I mentioned last weekend, I now have one of those “in-home hydroponic gardens” in my kitchen. For the first time in a long time, I’m tending to plants and watching them grow. Even one of my tomato pods is finally sprouting!

I know my new little garden won’t cancel my need for grocery store deliveries any time soon, but at least it’s nice to think that maybe these plants will provide my own food some time in the future.

So I went to open air farmers co-op today in hopes of buying some plants/ shrubs/ flowers. Gloves and mask on….BIG sign posted to keep 6’ distance from others…. total fail…this woman invaded my 6’ space not 1, not 2, but 3 times before I turned around and said “ back the fuck off! Do you not know what 6’ means? “. She lite well kept creeping within 2 feet of me. Her response? “ oh sorry I was just interested in the same flowers and plants”. I was so pissed off, I just left. What a douchebag. I had been in my house following all the rules for 3 straight weeks, and this dumbass has set my self quarantine date back to zero because she is a dumbass. People. Need. To. Get. A. clue. Thought it was safe to go to an open air market….was so wrong. I am stupid for have venturing out believing that even in a open air, non-confined space that people would get it! So, that said…no mater plants yet!

I found three N95 masks leftover from one of my painting projects, stumbled on them by accident. So I went to Honeybaked Ham and the grocery store.

Here’s how Honeybaked went… the manager and one cashier are the only others in the store. They’ve got gloves but no masks. I’m not worried, they aren’t letting you see the ham before you buy so I guess it’s alright. I’m just gonna assume they wear them in the back when they are blowtorching and wrapping the hams for the fridge cases. They are having a sale so I’m deciding if I go for 1 or two hams. Manager asks how many people, I say two. She says why just two? Dumbfounded I said the virus? She giggled and said we could have 8 more people with no problem. I thought she was kidding. She said she was having nine, her two sisters were each having nine and they were going to rotate. I almost fell over. This thinking scares the crap out of me.

Fast forward to the daily briefing from the WH, I tune out Trump but I listen to Fauci and Birx and Pence. The numbers in African American communities are trending higher, due in part to pre-existing conditions. The govt is tracking but can’t predict the future, can only get info out there. Got it. Scanning CNNs headlines tonight there is an article by Van Jones about the AA community and what their beliefs are regarding the whole virus situation. Interesting read, highly recommend. It also may explain the manager at Honeybaked and her nonchalance about groups.

The grocery store was fine as far as meat, veg, bread, dairy, but no tp and no flour. About half the people had masks and/or gloves on. That’s people of all races as I recall, so yes I am aware it’s not every person in any given category) Everyone tried to abide by the tape lines on the floor but It’s so counter-intuitive, but we all tried.

Let me tell you, those N95 masks are beyond uncomfortable, I think that’s why I had leftovers. I’m glad people have come up with some ingenious ways for the medical folks to save their ears. God bless them all.

Sorry for posting here, it was my first time out in over a week and the first time anything shocked me.

I know how terrible it is having to go and wear the mask for the first time. I it so hot and hard to breathe. I get it. I had a major meltdown and all sorts of weird issues. I am grateful for you sharing.

I felt so bad for you when I first read about your problems wearing that mask. I don’t know how anyone found it amusing or whatever they found it. Being claustrophobic myself and having to wear a mask for work sometimes is very anxiety producing. Only the second time commenting. Guess I am afraid I’ll inadvertently break a rule. Hope I don’t. Keep up the good work. You are appreciated more than you know.

I love gardening too – it’s my true passion. Today I divided echinacea, hosta, and daylilies and replanted them in new spots. Of course I can’t go to the garden center to buy anything as we are still on “stay at home” orders in NY, so just planting anything was nice. And it was the most gorgeous day with beautiful blue skies.

How nice that you have Iris in bloom already – they are such pretty plants. The only things in bloom here are forsythia and daffodils. Our tulips haven’t even bloomed yet. The night time temps are still dropping into the 30’s.

Deb, if you have a deck or a sunny window, you can grow in pots without any special equipment. If no sunny window, hydroponic stuff and lights are more readily available than ever, thanks to Calif. having legal pot grow. The shops that sell stuff for pot have equipment and KNOWLEDGEABLE workers who can educate you. I grow everything EXCEPT pot and they help me.

I have no plants and have been avoiding fresh produce because of germs so I am looking forward to the day I can have a salad again.

In other news I have had stabbing jaw pain for two days now. I was complaining about it tonight and my mom told me to gargle with vodka. Holy fuck was that the worst thing in the world. I had it in my mouth for a second before I nearly threw up. Vodka all over the sink, my shirt, in my hair, down my throat, up my nose. At least now I’m a little tipsy and the pain has subsided lol

The only way to get them is in restaurants, if at all. If I can find a plant it would be worth container-gardening some.

after the great zinnia and bulb fennel seedling upset (tray on the porch flipped over in the wind), found some more zinnia and fennel seed in the seed basket and they are all germinating. the shishito peppers now have real leaves and could use a bit of food. the pansies are so sad. think i ought to just buy ’em and plant in the fall in the porch pots (lately the winters here are a lot milder than before so it’s worth a shot to try to winter the pansies over and get a great start in the spring.) i have given up planting tomatoes here because the freaking squirrels just view the fruits as one bite snacks.

This has nothing to do with vegetables or flowers, but I am so happy that I went to local Walmart today. I was able to get stuff for my boy’s Easter baskets (and then sneak it inside sucessfully) and I got a ham to cook for Easter. With a brown sugar glaze, yum!! I waited outside for the senior shopping time to end (10am) and there was barely anyone inside. I was shocked.

There are only a few confirmed cases in the county that I live in, and it made me feel so good in my soul that most people in the store tried really hard to avoid each other. Maybe just all the smart people were out early in the morning probably.

My roses are starting to bloom. My rose bushes look really healthy this year and it looks like they are going to bloom a lot of roses. I had read that milk and egg shells are good for the soil. I have been feeding the bushes with both and now the rose blooms last longer and no bugs. The only negative is that the roses either have a faint smell or they smell bad.

My two 7 ft. tall blue juniper potted trees are actually thriving here in South Florida! They are a hardy tree so they have that advantage. I have fed them for the year and I am trying to adjust how I water them because they don’t normally need a lot of water but it’s so freaking hot here!
I have a blooming shamrock plant that’s just showing off right now. It’s in a beauty pageant with all my succulent plants and I just can’t pick a winner right now!
Our peace lily is muddling along in the shade of the front awning but the heat is really getting to her so it’s that time of the year to move her to the back patio with a ceiling fan over her to keep her cooler through the summer.
I am also watering and taking care of the neighbor’s outdoor plants since it’s their vacation home and they won’t be back for the foreseeable future.
Happy blooming and let there be an abundance of tomatoes for all of us! <3

I don’t want to go into the store to get plant starts. So I’m thinking of buying a knitting kit from Lion Brand. I don’t know where my needles are, even if I was at home. If I don’t buy a kit, I am thinking of making myself a big ol Harry Potter scarf (see the movies… I’ve got a pattern for both Movies 1 & 2, and the ones that were Film 3 and after. I don’t have the Fantastic Beasts version pattern, and wish I could find it and yarn suggestions.

I’m in NJ and for some reason, ok I know the reason I still listen to my Dad even though he went to Heaven in 1998, I won’t plant anything till Mother’s Day. So I’m looking and considering what to plant and where. Pretty sure I’m doing a container garden as I have 6 huge containers left over from who knows what and it’s easier for me to sit in a chair then get on the ground these days. I get the praise and respect for those in the health care fields, I get the praise and respect for the teachers doing this virtual thing…but sorry folks…with schools closed and teachers and admins doing things they have never done they call people like me. I run a student database that tracks everything to do with students and staff at tons of schools across this country and into 2 others. I’m gonna vent a minute. While people are worried about their area, rightfully so, I and 2 co workers are watching 26 different states and 3 other countries to see what schools are doing, what’s the government saying. What rules are being put into place that will affect those students and teachers. How do we get the technology ready to handle all those situations and then communicate that effectively to school staff while they are completely overwhelmed? I’m completely overwhelmed and I wasn’t working 12 plus hours a day I’d be day drinking.
Do I need to wait for Mother’s Day to plant? Pulling weeds is therapy for me.

I actually spend way more time, and money, getting my dirt ready. This year I started super early turning the ground and added all manner or expensive weirdness. I have to do things in stages because I tire very easily since I am so sedentary. Except for those glorious few weeks when I wasn’t. It was also raining a lot and it was fairly easy to turn the garden and I was able to get out some huge old roots this year. I guess what I am saying is you don’t really even need plants to garden. Then when the quarantine shit started I dash out and bought plants. The planting part was so much easier when the ground was perfectly ready
