Hello all! I’m sorry for missing you last week. Especially for my favorite category Avant Garde! Thank you to our fearless leader for filling in for the Project Runway Recap! My sister was in town for the Olympic Trials and GA marathon. I rarely get to see her because she’s always off running thousands of miles and being generally awesome so that was a rare treat. She came in 12th in her age group because she was “taking it easy” due to an injury. There would still be search parties out looking for me if I attempted to run anything over 8 miles. Anyhoo, with Les and Super C off on spring break you get me and Lucky Lucy, my faithful canine companion.
It’s crazy that we are in the final four! Everyone has FIVE MONTHS to do their collections. Again, reminding us how lucky we are to be back at Bravo. Christian Siriano is visiting everyone in their hometowns to see how they are progressing. The key to a good collection is as always, creativity, cohesion and continuity. There has to be a thread people! (hee hee). Christian is headed out three months after the last episode to see what everyone is up to.
Great Scott! She’s Got Wheels!
We start with Fancy Nancy in Philadelphia. Her studio is right next to her apartment in the city. Nancy is thrilled to see Christian. Christian is amused and a bit amazed at Nancy’s office. He is not used to the hyper-organized version of Nancy. He is also amused by the life-sized cutout of himself placed prominently in her workroom. Nancy is doing a zero waste collection accessible for everyone.

The challenge when she designed for her paralympian changed her entire fashion worldview. She has done looks in a liquid fabric. Christian tells her that her fit has to be impeccable and not to overwork the looks. He tells her to make one sleek simple piece. Nancy wisely says she will listen to Christian and edit. They then go run the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Kombucha Mother Is Not Fabric
Back in NYC Christian goes to visit Sergio. He is prepared for whatever political statement Sergio is going to shove down his throat. And it is going to be…global warming. It’s very literal as it’s going from white to blue…with fringe. He tells Christian he doesn’t want to be a burden on the environment. Mixmaster texts me asking at what point is Sergio ever going to realize he sounds like an ass. He’s growing his own leather. From kombucha. In a bathtub. Christian says he wants to see fashion not smelly living organisms.

Christian gets his color palette but not his design. It’s looking like a Victorian Saloon girl. Sergio tells him he always adds classic elements to his designs because that is who he is. Fringe is a classic element? Christian tells him the judges called out his referential nods to other more famous designers and to make sure it is new and fresh. Sergio is going to do Sergio. Shocker. Sergio then takes Christian to play soccer which is as hilarious as you would expect it to be. Sports! Yells Christian.
Cohesion, Cohesion, Cohesion!
Next, we’re off to visit Victoria in LA. I liked Victoria in this segment. Yes she has a lot of ridiculous accessories, a weird logo referencing an Egyptian Pharaoh with Moldovan embroidery and a zillion strappy suits that look like everything she has done throughout the competition; but, she LISTENS TO CHRISTIAN. He tells her each piece is great, but from a different collection. He explains that she needs to simplify and streamline. Maybe do some dresses? Her husband is currently driving a truck to support the family and Victoria’s business. He wholeheartedly believes in her. It is actually very sweet.

On to Brooklyn to visit Geoffrey. Geoffrey messed up his knee skateboarding and is coming off a job for Disney. Geoffrey hasn’t started. Anything. He’s using manipulated fabrics and quilted chain mail. Christian thinks he has a lot of interesting things and that’s great, but he needs to GET GOING.He’s very worried about Geoffrey’s being so far behind. I am too.
Two Months Later…
The designers are invited to Christian’s fashion show. Christian greets them very kindly and calmly then goes on to do a major runway show. Victoria, who is now blonde, is overwhelmed by how many people are there. Nancy finds it very inspirational. Geoffrey in his best leather daddy gear seems quietly determined. Sergio looks like he swallowed a lemon. He looks jealous frankly.

Finally back in the workroom, everyone opens their boxes and checks out each other’s work. Nancy is VERY happy with her collection. Sergio tells her it is lovely. Victoria changed everything after Christian’s visit making it streamlined and cohesive. Sergio was actually INSPIRED by Christian’s Victorian Saloon comment. So he pushed it in that direction. Huh. Geoffrey points out everyone has issues with their collections, including him. Victoria’s is strong but over-styled, Sergio’s is looking Western and old, Nancy has used too much of the same fabric. He’s not wrong.
The Unexpected, Expected Twist
Karlie comes in rocking the outfit Victoria SHOULD have designed. She tells them they are all talented but “they are throwing out the rule book.” Everyone looks panicked. Karlie announces each designer will present 3 looks to the judges. The judges will then decide who gets to go on to present their collection in the finale. It could be ALL of them, it could be two or three of them. Well this is an interesting twist.

The challenge is to decide what to present. Do you want to pick your strongest looks so you get picked to go on? Or do you pick things you are not sure of to get feedback regarding a direction? The designers proceed to choose who gets which model. Sergio asks if he can have three specific models and Geoffrey tells him they are taking turns. Geoffrey told us in the beginning of the competition he didn’t understand how he was coming off to the other designers. Dude, you STILL don’t. He wants to be respectful and thinks he has grown.
When Victoria asks what cocky means, not KHAKI, Geoffrey tells her it means confident. Sergio says it means something different. She says, but a lot of people say that about YOU. He explains it means you think you are better than everyone else. Exactly. Nancy thinks Sergio is misunderstood. Yes, he says crazy things, but he has never been mean. This is true.

Christian Gives Some Final Feedback
Christian comes in and wants to talk to Geoffrey first as he hasn’t seen anything Geoffrey has done. Geoffrey explains his “armor” collection was inspired by his dad, who has three purple hearts. Christian thinks his technique is amazing, but he’s worried about the fire. He is also horrified that Geoffrey could not find one amazing girl in all of NYC to be a fit model. And there are “sleeve boobs”. He’s worried it’s too conceptual. Christian trying on a ginormous chain mail puffer coat is hilarious.
Christian tells Victoria tells her she is too styled. She needs to surprise the judges. She thanks him profusely. My how times have changed.
Christian tells Sergio that he needs to modernize his styling, especially because the clothes are referencing a period in time. He seems to listen?

Nancy is using her wheelchair look because it is what is most important to her. Christian understands. He is happy her printed suit is very tailored. She shows off her handbag complete with a custom wine bag cover. Nancy cries happy tears over the positive feedback. Geoffrey, being Geoffrey is immediately concerned but these are tears of joy.
Christian tells Geoffrey to calm down and pick pieces that need feedback. He then has to leave because he is headed to the Oscars to “dress a million people.”
Runway Day Madness
Everyone fits and adjusts. Sergio realizes he didn’t take the sheerness of his first garment into account and you can see the model’s underwear. If Victoria is over-accessorizing her looks, Geoffrey is overdoing the models makeup and nails. He is melting down. Nancy is handing out fruit snacks to the models.

It’s do or die time. The guest judge is CFDA President Steven Kolb, this is getting serious!
I’m getting lingerie meets bridal for Sergio Guadarrama’s first look. BOUDOIR. And butt cheeks. I like the top of the second look, I hate the bottom. It looks like he ripped off Zac Posen’s flared dress bottom and put fringe on it. The fringe cocktail dress moves beautifully but it seems a bit heavy. Full disclosure: I do have a fringe issue.
The corset of Nancy Volpe-Beringer’s first dress is pretty. Brandon gets his reveal when the skirt turns into a cape. The suit is well tailored, but I am worried about the fabric choice. The hair is very eighties. I love the red gown. It is shimmering in all the right places.
There is A LOT going on Victoria Cocieru’s first look. The second look benefits from the simplicity of the bright coat on top of the very Victoria suit underneath. I hate these hats. I love the simplicity of the shape of the jumpsuit, but think the designers are going to call out the fit.

Say what you want about Geoffrey Mac but this is the most editorial of the four to me. The fabric under the gigantic puffer coat is cool. I kind of wish it was a tight black pants though. The metal mesh dress with the open bra is cool but the fit is terrible. The best look is the men’s look.

The Judges Feedback
Brandon wants to know if Victoria’s color palette is indicative of the rest of the collection. Nina is worried about the colors AND the fit. The cropped jacket is looking lopsided. If her trademark is tailoring, it needs to be impeccable. Elaine thinks the glittery jumpsuit looks cheap. Nina also says it is smart to do separates because editors and regular people love separates. Steven thinks the caps are a good reference and go-to to as a continual piece for her future collections. Karlie tells her to ditch the bags. Brandon tells her to ditch the bags and the logos as she hasn’t earned the right to be branding things yet.

Steven tells Sergio he’s not getting his “arctic in trouble” message. Elaine tells him if he wants to make an impact he needs to pick ONE cause and stick with it. Elaine got lingerie from the white look. Nina tells him he can make beautiful clothes but his styling is dated. She doesn’t know many women who are looking for these types of looks. Brandon thinks he has to “fuck it up”. He tells him to EDIT. Karlie tells him to not try and show EVERYTHING he knows how to do in each look. Sergio takes all of this surprisingly well. Perhaps he has grown after all.

Brandon tells Geoffrey metal mesh is very hard to work with. If this is going to be his go-to fabric, it needs to be everything. Brandon references Versace. He thinks the tops are strong and the bottoms fall flat. Nina thinks the styling is overdone. She wants things to veer towards the luxe. Elaine is drawn to the men’s look. Steven thinks there is no sexiness to these looks.

Elaine wants Nancy to modernize her styling. The hair and makeup need to be simple. Nina thinks the tailored look is great, but there needs to be a “breather” because there is a lot going on. Nancy tells Brandon he inspired her wine tote bag. He’s happy with zero waste, but wants it out of the runway show. He tells her there is too much going on. Karlie tells Nancy that the simple act of taking the gown’s headpiece off transforms the look.
So, everyone did too much. Every wanted to show all of their bells and whistles. So who goes? Does anyone go? What do you think? The Lovely Les, Super C perhaps Mixmaster and little old me will be chiming in next week. Have a wonderful weekend! XOXO CJBomb.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting your recap all day! I was really curious what you were going to say about Geoffrey’s giant puffer coats. While I agree that they definitely are the most editorial I can’t decide if I love them, hate them, or really don’t care about them at all and am just invested because I think Geoffrey is such a kind soul. I missed the challenge Nancy won, is her model the same? My husband asked me and now I’m curious too! Thank you for the great recap, I look forward to these every week.
Yes. Nancy used DD for her Asante guarde win. And she
chose DD first for this challenge. (I used DD both times instead of a pronoun. I HATE the “they” as a singular pronoun. I understand the REASON for using the pronoun, but I wish someone could come up with a new singular for he/she and his/hers.)
Thank you! Yes, I get it. It feels odd referring to a singular person as a plural and I didn’t know DD wasn’t cis so I would’ve been really confused if you had used they/them.
When my daughter started high school all of her friends became pronouns: ex. She’s coming over to pick me up then we’re going to meet up with him. Later we’re meeting them and they will all go with us..
I haven’t been to this site in a while. Your comment reminded me of why I like coming here. LoL. Cheers.
I would love to see a discussion on here where we could ask questions without being called ignorant or something of the sort. I have questions but I don’t want to offend.
I also agree that the them/they thing feels odd, those terms have already been taken and used for so long it’s difficult to assign another meaning.
Maybe we could come up with something unique and closer to him/her but I have to admit the vowels/pronunciations I ran through in my mind ain’t necessarily gonna work… Just an idea.
Nancy won the Olympic Challenge. The models were all Olympic Athletes some of whom are hoping to participate in the Summer Olympics or Para-lympics. Nancy’s model for that challenge was in fact in a wheelchair. I do not know if the young lady modeling the adapted outfit this week is the same woman or another model who also happens to be in a wheelchair.
Shes an up and coming model, Bri Scalesse
Thank you for giving us a name — Bri is lovely, I wish her much success in her career.
Excellent recap—yes, pants would’ve been great with Geoffrey’s coats. I loved them.
I thought the judges asking Nancy to take the cowl off her liquid dress was a mistake. Seems like now it’s just a halter dress, although we didn’t get a great, head-on view. Love that material. I think Christian had a liquid dress in his show too.
I was excited about Sergios inspiration and all the beautiful photos he had around the apartment. Completely mystified and disappointed that he got Saloon-wear out of that. I liked the cocktail dress in that it reminded me a little of the late, great Chris March’s dresses in its intricacy
Victoria’s stuff is okay. I suppose she’ll win since it’s probably the most marketable of the 4.
Can’t wait for next week!
I made a few notes when I was watching the home visits and then got distracted by other work on the site.
I love Fancy Nancy. I am concerned about some of her looks while others I LOVE. That silver sequins look in particular is a no for me. I like the maroonish purplish colored one and the suit.
oh Dear Sergio, I am not in love with your looks. I hope to God you listen to Christian and lose the fringe. I think you work better with less time. You seem to be over thinking it. I love that mid level blue. I like the simple one that looks like a body stocking. I get wanting to stick to your aesthetic, but you need to LISTEN TO CHRISTIAN!
Victoria has skirts that are not asymmetrical! I love her white knit looks at least the long sleeved one! And Finally, something of Victoria’s I might wear if I wasn’t so lumpy and bumpy. And she is finally listening to Christian’s suggestions!
Of course Geoffrey has been out of commission due to a skateboarding accident. This happens to many grown men. Oh Lord, he is still in the “hypothetical stage and what he as is pretty bad. So of course he cries in confessional. Geoffrey’s crying is as predictable as Victoria’s hemlines. The only thing that makes me worry less is his predilection for changing everything up at the last minute. He doesn’t seem to think there is an issue when Christian points out one of his dresses has a boob sleeve? I guess he thinks that was a compliment.
I knew Sergio was going to get called out for walking someone in a thong. And again with the dated. Sigh. They are so mean to Sergio I suppose they are trying to drive the point home that he does in fact have room for growth. Sergio seems to be taking in their feedback and at least is not talking back. I LOVED his cocktail dress. But when he said the skirt weighed 45 pounds I felt bad for the model.
Almost never agree with Elaine. I like Victoria’s glittery look. I also like the fit (or non fit as it were) I like her looks for the most part. There are too many accessories. The bags need to go. I like the hats but there should be no more than two in the entire collection. The logos are presumptuous and tacky at this point in her carer. Also, I felt she got the short end of the stick with the models.
TELLING FANCY NANCY TO SHOW THE SHIMMERY DRESS WITHOUT THE COWL IS THE STUPIDEST THING ANY JUDGE ON THE SHOW HAS EVER UTTERED! I loved her suit, but in the above photo it looks like there is a person standing in the model’s lady garden. I’m just saying. I hope she doesn’t show the wheelchair look for a variety of reasons.
Geoffrey annoys the fuck out of me and this collection was garbage. Utter garbage. THAT”S MY OPINION!
I don’t think they will send anyone home. If they do it should be Geoffrey but who could really tell him that to his face? The will all show. And Victoria will win. And Diego and Fancy Nancy will have been robbed.
We actually agree on a reality show, TT, finally! It should be Sergio, Nancy, and Victoria ( As much as that pains me to say) in the final three. Geoffrey reminds me of a coworker who is in his early 40s and stunted. All off the ladies in the office baby him and look out for him, but I can guarantee if it was a woman the same age no one would give a fuck. And that’s the tea.
I never thought of it that way but you’re totally right. His tantrums at Mood really irked me early on but, then I got a soft spot for him because he does seem sweet to me. But, you’re right. This behavior would never be tolerated or babied coming from a woman.
I did not like Geoffrey’s puffer jackets. He just proved not even a thin model looks good in a puffer jacket. The only person who looked good in his puffer jackets was Christian and he looked a funny/goofy kind of good. Not a flattering kind of good. Geoffrey’s designs were not flattering towards a woman or man’s body. It was almost a hate you all, no point in making you look like kind of design. So unflattering! I have been drinking Crown tonight, I got good news/bad news today. So I am not mincing any words.
I also did not like Victoria’s designs, I think she TOTALLY deserved the you haven’t earned putting big letters/logos on your clothing.
I only liked liked Sergio and Nancy’s designs tonight. I loved Sergio’s fringe dress and Nancy’s liquid dress. That’s all, I could get really stupid here.
Super recap, CJBomb, as always! Thank you so much— you make my week!
The home visits are always my undoing— I fall in love with all the designers in their home environments! Like, Victoria annoyed me by being petulant and whiny for much of the competition, but now I am in love with her husband and her baby, and my whole feeling for her has changed! Still don’t like the hats, bags, LOGOS or poor tailoring, but…I do like some of her separates. My money remains on her for the win, because I think that was the plan all along.
Oh, Geoffrey. When I heard of the SKATEBOARD INJURY and the fact that he had nothing accomplished at Christian’s visit, my heart started to pound. He has a fear of success. This is HIS CHANCE, and he seems to be sabotaging himself at every turn. And yes, I’m guilty of going into mom-gear and wanting Geoffrey to come work on his collection at my house, where I can feed him and encourage him and get him on a production schedule, and then I’ll go flag down tall willowy young people in the street to act as fit models! Yes, yes, yes, I expect my daughters to be strong and self-sufficient, and the boys get babied. It’s wrong and I do it.
Sergio’s collection reminds me of Skagway, Alaska! Glaciers and saloons! He sent down a model in a thong, and like I think Elaine, all I can think of is butt cheeks. He’s grown on me, though. We’ll see what happens.
I love Nancy, and I selfishly want her to win. It does do my heart good that she made it to the final four.
I want them ALL to be able to show at Fashion Week! Don’t make them all work for five months on 10 looks and then not let them show!!! I don’t think I could take that.
I hope Nancy wins- her designs are interesting, and she has a heart of gold.
Sergio has grown on me. He IS a bit cocky, but not in a mean way at all. He is consistently helpful with the other designers and although he does think his skills are better than theirs, he doesn’t say that in a mean-spirited way. It’s the strangest kind of cockiness- annoying yet not demeaning.
Geoffrey was a hot mess. Still … I’m interested in seeing more.
I was bored by Victoria’s collection. She is cocky too- but not as kind as Sergio.
I think all 4 will move on.
I always love reading these recaps! What do I know? My go-to is tshirt and jeans
We have the same go-to! But I add a baseball cap so I hope Victoria’s mom starts a line of crocheted caps, they’re beautiful. Sorry Vickie! ?
I think the judges had already made up their mind who is going to NYFW. Otherwise, why would the designer risk showing some designs for which they wanted feedback? Would you want to show the judges something that Christian thought was fugly? That multi-armed elephant trunk dress of Geoffrey’s was horrible. If I were a judge, I would be worried that the rest of his collection was as gross. It’s perplexing that Geoffrey took a Disney job. Yes, the bills need to be paid but he needs to weigh it against winning Project Runway or at least showing his designs on the NY runway and TV. Sell the skateboard and start sewing. His models looked grungy, dirty and zitty. Victoria’s pale color palette was generally boring, I liked the pink and white. didn’t like the purses or hats. Mother doesn’t always know what’s best. Why didn’t Christian comment on her logo during his visit? Especially the large one that was positioned across the crotch area? The judges commented on the color, fit and lack of luxe (aka cheap) of her collection. How could they permit her collection to show? How could she fix these items in a day or two? I’d like to see Nancy’s collection. I understand the need to remove the cowl from DD’s dress. It’s to give a break, to interpose something simple and minimal between her complex designs. As Brandon said, he didn’t know where to look, there was too much going on in her looks. She does not know how to style her models. The long curly hair of her pantsuit model was from the big hair 80s. She needs to go super sleek since her looks are so busy. Sergio’s collection was pretty, I agree that he needs to modernize and lose a lot of the fringe and simplify his looks. I thought his ice cap melting concept would be clear to viewers once they were told his idea. What does the CFDA guy expect, print designs with icebergs and puddles? Seemed more of a western theme to me but I would buy melting ice caps. Sergio did fib when he was asked about the model’s underwear showing through the sheer fabric. Earlier he had said that he didn’t realize it would show; during the runway critique he explained it as icebergs being fresh and untouched. He should have just said Thanks, I’ll fix it. So. . . I’m thinking that the judges will wear a commercial hat and not a hat for who most deserves to win. They’ll choose Victoria.
I think Victoria’s color/fabric choices made her collection look very cheap, but yes she is more than likely in for the win.
I think Geoffrey is going to be sent home, sadly! He’s just not ready to send that collection down the runway. It’s very interesting and could be developed, but it’s not edited. I think the ideas are not even fully formed. He self sabotaged! So sad.
Victoria I often love but Christian said it when he told her she needed to surprise the judges. I thought this collection was boring. Gasp!
Loved Nancy’s collection! Change the styling. PUT THE COWL NECK BACK ON!
Segio’s looks, come on they’re incredible! Please listen to the judges feedback Sergio! F it up and win this damn thing. His dresses are divine.
Sergio or Nancy for the win, I agree. Sadly for you I am always WRONG ???
I think the cowl neck s what diffentiates her dress from a halter tube and it goes with the collection. But THE JUDGES HAVE SPOKEN. I keep thinking of how (quietly) ENRAGED Nina was when Mondo didn’t (righteously) remove the long sleeves from his polka dot dress. It cost him the win. (But then he won All Stars — a far better prize.)
I was disappointed in the collections, especially Geoffreys. He did some beautiful outfits during the show, but there was nothing here I cared for. The arm dress, in particular, was just awful. The bra dress looked interesting on the hanger, but was a big no on the model. I agree with the poster saying he is self sabotaging.
The rest were ok. I guess fringe is the new ruffle for Sergio. Sigh. I usually love Nancy’s use of texture, but I didn’t see much of it here. Except for the ridiculous logos and crocheted baseball hats,I liked Victoria’s collection overall.
My lasting impression was how accurate and pointed the judge’s comments were. I will look forward to seeing who acted on the comments.
Yes, but you have to realize Geoffrey chose the outfits he wanted feedback on while Nancy chose her top 3 looks. You have to remember they only showed 3 looks.
Did he though? I thought he didn’t want to risk doing that. And to be honest, I don’t know what his best looks are. But I have to presume it was not the homeless guy. Now that I think about it didn’t he do well in the male model thing? Maybe they are just throwing us off with those three looks? And Geoffrey can’t handle having five months to do a collection. He will probably be remaking his collection an hour before runway and it will come out fabulous.
Good point about the last minute thing. Any kind of term paper, thesis, etc., I would always do best when I waited until crunch time. Some of us learn and perform differently. Now I really hope we get to see all four shows to see what Geoffrey comes up with.
Thank you for the fabulous recap CJ and TT.
I love Geoffrey and am worried he will be sent home. I get TT’s points about him being a sad sack and agree with the comments above about him being stunted, but I do think he is still carrying a ton of baggage about his childhood and teen years and growing up with a father in the military. It broke by heart when he talked about how difficult life was for him as a boy and young adult. It is so fabulous to know he and is father now have a good relationship.
I love Fancy Nancy. I think I want to be her when I grow up. I am 50 and I so admire her strength to make this major life change. She is so talented. I loved 90% of her clothes this season — even the oversize coats.
Sergio — -hmmm. Nancy said it best, Yes he says some dumb things but he is never mean. He is trying for sure and he comes across as very cocky, but he has never been mean. His need to have a political message for every runway is exhausting. I appreciated the judges finally telling him if to pick one cause and make it part of every show. So smart and then the cause is meaningful and not just a flavor of the month type of activism.
As for Victoria, I do hope this is not rigged for her to win. I truly feel she should have been sent home for the tie dye challenge. Delvin’s dress was blah, but his tie dye was beautiful. Victoria’s tie dye was absent from the look. Anyway. I did not get the hats at all. And when the CFDA guy told her to make them her signature and carry them forward in every show! Huh? I was shaking my head. But of course I have like four outfits I rotate through weekly when not in sweatpants so what do I know.
Thank you again for these fabulous recaps. I learn so much here. 🙂
“when not in sweatpants “….This basically only happens at my house when I am wearing old man PJs. Currently, however I am sporting LADIES Vera Wang Pajamas and feeling very fashion forward.
Don’t tell CJ but the Vera Wang PJs are from Kohls. I was going to link you to a photo but they appear to be sold out. HOWEVER, now I am fucked because they have lots online that are on clearance. I shall order some because I feel like I am moving forward in my hermit wear fashion by at least shopping in gender that matches my birth certificate. SEE? I AM FASHIONABLE!
I LOVE my Vera Wang PJs.
I also have Vera Wang yoga pants when I am feeling fancy – also from Kohls. 🙂
Me too. I went to buy more, the other options I didn’t care for. Plus some shit is “three piece because it comes with socks, or some other stupid thing. The pair I like was not on sale and was still $60 AT KOHLS. I do not have the yoga pants. I’ll look at them later. I just got in from Whole Foods and was enjoying a few minutes of flower arranging before I realize I was let doing set up for RHOA and Family Karma.
We should probably stop talking about this. I am sure CJ and Les are hyperventilating. 🙂
It just seems BRAVO decided to ruin the momentum they had going from last Seasons triumphant return with this whole Victoria thing and the 1 day challenges. I don’t get it. Why?
One of my pet peeves is when internet commenters post elaborate psychiatric diagnosis’ of celebrities. BUT (lol) Diego reminds me so much of my nephew who is on the Aspberger spectrum. My brother, who was rightfully worried about bullying, somehow instilled in him super “self esteem” that sometimes comes off as arrogance, in his case an intellectual superiority type thing. He’s also genuinely “nice”, but just misses a lot of social cues. Just a thought. The soccer visit was my favorite.
All the fashion was meh to me. I think i liked Nancy’s the best but I’m less and less invested in any of them. I’ve always been off the Geoffrey love train with TT. Grow up already. I did like that the judges were critical of Victoria. Except on the stupid ballcaps. I didnt buy the whole super successful soccer story. Just didn’t buy it.
I think I’m rooting for Melting Arctic. Loved the colors but agree Sergio needs to fuck it up!
I am a super fan of ‘20s fringe so I really liked Sergio’s (not to be confused with Diego’s ?) cocktail dress. I think his sheer gown could be saved by going sleeveless and losing the damn “message” that no one will get if he doesn’t endlessly drone on about it, as per the judges.
Nancy’s suit is gorgeous, but the judges were right to call her on the styling. She should go with a sleek hairstyle and lose the purses across the board. TT, I didn’t notice until you posted the pic that there is kind of a “hey, look at my vag” in the print. Love it! The neck thing could be saved if it was just a bit smaller in height, I agree it’s too much as is but I love the fabrics.
Victoria’s collection was nothing interesting to me except for the crocheted baseball caps that her mother made.
Geoffrey’s designs left me sad. I was hoping to see more latex. He just overthinks and doubts himself too much. The purple puffer looked like Barney and the Sta-Puff marshmallow man had a child. The black puffer that Christian put on would have been a perfect ode to the blueberry girl in the original Willy Wonka if it was just blue. I think his collection was a half thought out mess. How does a skateboard accident prevent you from conceptualizing designs?
I don’t see the judges pulling a dirty move and not letting them all show at NYFW, viewers would not be happy. They also pointed out how distinctly different each designer’s aesthetic was so It would be a fun runway.
Amazing recaps, per usual, so thank you all. One more to go, I can’t wait! Then off to Top Chef All-Stars ?
Agree about Geoffrey et al, Beets. Geoffrey’s history puts him at the brink of success over and over. He doesn’t need a PR break to see his dreams come true, but some good therapy to help him figure out why he continually sabotages himself. I’d start with his relationship with his father. He’s a fount of creativity, talent and sensitivity. He seems unable to channel all of that into commercial success on the scale he envisions, and has the talent to attain.
Sergio is another one who seems intent on steering himself away from success. His initial concept was cool, but I agree with one of the judges who told him to FOCUS. Otherwise, his issues seem nothing but like contrived branding. The saloon style was a copout. Or, a result of his own insecurity. His challenges were all over the place this season, and given his inability to focus, that makes sense. Unlike Geoffrey, however, I think Sergio, given his age, has a good chance of settling into himself and finding his lane.
Victoria mellowed out. But she muted herself too much. Other than flashing her brand name. Maybe she figured if she didn’t win, folks would still want to pursue her brand if she put it front and center. I kind of miss some of the crazy confidence she had at the start.
Fancy Nancy proves that persistence and life experience comes in pretty handy in the PR pressure cooker. She’s an inspiring illustration of what happens when someone finds her true calling and loves every moment of it. I went to her instagram, and those big coats are indeed fabulous. The one she made for her sister is to die for, so I see why she insisted on making them a central part of her challenges this season. She, of all of them, absorbed everything she learned this season and it shows in the work she’s done.
At this point, I think the judges were harsh on all of them because they didn’t want anyone walking away thinking they have this in the bag. All of them will wind up showing because no one had any major missteps.
Thanks for another stellar recap, CJ. I have a marathon running sis, too. So proud, but so intimidated sometimes at the level of commitment.
Thank you for the great recap CJ and TT.
Fancy Nancy for the win. Loved the dress without the cowl.
Victoria – Boring colours however as she has a few seperates it may turn out to be a fix after all..
I loved Sergio’s cocktail dress until he said it weighed 45Ibs.
Cannot wait until next week.
Geoffrey needs to grow up and take responsibilty for his actions rather than self- sabotage. I love him but he irrated me this week, hated the puffa moomin jackets.
Great recap! I’m a alittle confused. I live in Miami, Florida so I don’t know what the cost of living in California is. From what I understand Victoria lives in LA with her husband and child. She kinda said they are struggling with money issues so winning would help her out tremendously. The house they showed she was staying in, maybe renting or whatever seemed quite lovely. She also is always dressed to perfection and her husband, child and home surroundings looked great. Maybe she can stretch a dollar but It didn’t not appear That she was hurting financially. Of course We don’t know details of her situation but I was curious if anyone else was wondering the same thing. All of the designers have a unique point of view but I’m rooting for Nancy. If she takes the advice of the judges and Christian and stays true to who she is I think she could win.
I’m rooting for Nancy besides loving her clothes, I love that she proves us older gals can have a great second act of life.
DVF and Nina Garcia are slated for WWHL after the finale.

I watched the Ep. 5 Aftershow and Christian said she was the tiebreaker for Geoffrey. Cyndi said she fought HARD for him to win and “they all LOVE Victoria.” Then she adds something (obligatory) about Victoria being good. It seemed she noticed the displaced worship as much as we do.
I HATES THOSE DAMNED CROCHETED HATS.
