HAPPY OSCARS WEEKEND!
I have a little bit of BAFTA gossip and a few Oscars predictions and thoughts. So, for the uninitiated, the BAFTAS (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) are the British version of the Oscars. They also have TV awards like our Emmys, but I don’t care about that.
This week has been EXTREMELY busy, but I couldn’t have us enter the Oscars weekend without this little tidbit. The movie nerd part of my Twitter feed blew up during the Super Bowl (BAFTAS were also on Sunday in the UK). I haven’t even had a chance to watch all of the BAFTAS (I will probably do so just for Graham Norton, the host. I LOVE his talk show!)
BAFTAS SO WHITE
So, in BAFTAS gossip news, the BAFTAS had their own Oscars So White moment. When you look at the list of nominees, yup, pretty pale! Not that the Oscars are having the most diverse year, but at least the Academy is working on it. The old white dude demographic will also decrease as they start to kick the bucket. Not that I want Jack Nicholson dead. Until now, the BAFTAS have managed to avoid notice. But in the year of “Megxit”… dream on, Brits!
So, the two speeches brought to my attention were Joaquin Phoenix’s acceptance speech for Best Actor. He WENT THERE.
Key Parts Of His Speech:
“I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight, and the BAFTAs have always been very supportive of my career, and I’m deeply appreciative. But I have to say that I also feel conflicted because so many of my favorite actors who are deserving don’t have the same privilege.”
He then said, among other things:
“I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here.”
He wrapped up his speech acknowledging he isn’t perfect in this regard:
“I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the sets I work on are inclusive. But I think that it’s more than just having sets that are multicultural. I think that we really have to do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism.”
The big BAFTAS Gossip is that he LEFT HIS BAFTA ON THE PODIUM. However, when I watch the clip it looks like he walked off without it, but just as the camera cuts away it looks like he was turning around to get it. So, it was probably unintentional.
Prince William Makes An Unprecedented Public Comment
Later in the evening, the President of the BAFTAS spoke. I think that is what he is. Anyway, it was His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William (I think I have the title right.. .fuck it if I don’t. I’m American.)
PRINCE WILLIAM ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGED “BAFTAS SO WHITE” IS A PROBLEM.
Excuse me while I shout it out for those who aren’t Anglophiles. The ROYAL FAMILY NEVER GETS POLITICAL IF THEY CAN HELP IT. Especially those who know their asses will be sitting on the throne. THEY DIDN’T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PRESS BEING RACIST TO MEGAN AND THE BABY!
While Joaquin’s statements were more provocative, some in my Twitter feed lost more of their shit at Prince William’s speech.
Prince William Said:
“We find ourselves talking again about the need to do more to ensure diversity in the sector and the awards process. That simply cannot be right in this day and age.”
Later in his speech he said:
“I know that both Pippa [Harris], chair of BAFTA, and Amanda [Berry], BAFTA CEO, share that frustration and continue to work tirelessly to ensure that creative talent is discovered and supported. BAFTA takes this issue seriously and, following this year’s nominations, have launched a full and thorough review of the entire awards process to build on their existing work and ensure that opportunities are available to everyone.”
For the record, I’m not team “the immediate royals hate Megan because she’s biracial.” My opinions on the royal family dynamics are a WHOLE OTHER POST if this was Erica Tattles. In short, I think that the immediate Royals (Queen, Prince Philip, Charles, Camilla, William, Catherine) love Harry and Megan. I think that the recent broo haha has been more about the tabloid media, the “Royal Family Firm” obligations towards that media, their tradition of not saying a word (keeping the stiff upper lip) about the nasty rumors, and Harry and Megan finally reaching the breaking point.
Tamara Tattles Sneaks In Some Purple Pen
Erica forgive me for sneaking this in but I was Googling a few things based on this very interesting post and saw that Prince Harry was apparently upset about on of Rebel Wilson’s jokes. The source also said that the show was edited to make it appear he was unbothered. So of course I had to watch the jokes and they were hysterical. So I had to include them here.
I think the BAFTA comments are about as close as William can say publicly about the issue when he very well might want to scream “you fuckers, you cost me my brother at my side because my sister in law is biracial and you lost your racist minds over that.”
Oh, I guess Brad Pitt also said he was naming his award “Harry” because he was taking it back to the USA with him! OOOF! Slightly tacky, Brad… but you took your shirt off in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and you are still hot, so I forgive you.

It will be interesting to see if this hurts Joaquin Phoenix’s votes for Best Actor. We’ll probably never know, but the Oscar voting literally closed on Tuesday. I will also be interested to see if this emboldens anyone else to make a political speech. Oh, excuse me… emboldens any other white dudes. Women have been saying controversial shit in their speeches for a while. (See Patricia Arquette’s 2015 Oscar acceptance speech on wage equality. The Arquette women have no fucks left to give. I love them.)
I’m SO looking forward to the convo we always have on Oscar Sunday. Great news… the obligation I had on Oscar afternoon got MOVED so I get to watch it live with you all! (YAY!)
Erica’s Oscar Predictions On Best Picture
Of the Best Picture nominees, I’ve seen 1917, The Irishman, JoJo Rabbit, Little Women (2x!), Joker, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Today I’m seeing ALL of the Shorts. I found a recliner theater that shows all of them at once in a 3 hour, 18 minute show thanks to the official Shorts website! This shortened season sucks though. Just had to finally give in and say I am not going to be able to see all the Best Picture nominees.
My prediction is that 1917 will win Best Picture. It is ABSOLUTELY worth seeing on the big screen. Beautifully shot. But I think it will win because it doesn’t have haters. My favorite film of the Best Picture Nominees that I’ve seen so far? Jojo Rabbit. I ADORE this film. The kids are fantastic. For the first time, I see why people appreciate Scarlett Johansen. I won’t be pissed if 1917 wins, but I will be screaming with joy if Jojo wins. I will probably try to see it in the theater one more time before it leaves.
A Surprisingly Good Film
I was absolutely surprised by how much I enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I usually avoid Quentin Tarantino movies because they are so violent. This one isn’t so much. Please, if you have seen it, don’t ruin the surprises in the comments. I went in knowing NOTHING except the setting, and I want others to enjoy it the same way.
Between now and the Oscars, I recommend trying to see Jojo or 1917. Oh yes, my fellow women, go see Little Women as well. Greta got ROBBED of a best Director nomination. Martin Scorese phoned in The Irishman. When people online try to say “but who would you leave out of these amazing directors?” that my answer. Martin. Fucking. Scorsese. Little Women was a better film, and was better directed than The Irishman. There. I said it.
And A Nominated Film You Can Skip
You can also give The Joker a miss, in my ever so humble opinion. Dark, dreary, and honestly? A depressing flat character.
I guess I see why he was nominated because he carried the entire film, but the SNL skit about it being white guy rage is also funny because it’s true.
Still working on what I am going to have for dinner Oscar Sunday as well. Want it to be somewhat healthy and easy. Maybe something in my Instapot!
What are your plans for Sunday? Will you watch are are you going to watch RHOA? Try to watch both? Skip it all and watch Netflix?
Don’t forget to check in with us here on the Annual Oscars post. We will start chatting about the red carpet looks and keep going until whenever it actually ends! See you there!
