Project Runway Recap: Sheer Genius

January 31, 2020 by tamaratattles 74 Comments

Hello Project Runway Recap peeps! I am flying solo tonight (well I am with the dog). Lovely Les and hopefully Super C will be chiming in with valuable insight and commentary. How cool were those looks Christin Siriano did for the Grammy’s? Anyhoo..This looks to be a dramatic one so let’s dive right in, shall we? Are we going to lose one designer to attitude and one to illness tonight?? We live through losing Marquise again as a reminder that it’s getting down to the wire.

Dayoung is still not doing well. She is exhausted. Victoria is freaking out because she was on the bottom. Les tells me it is a pity party for one. Pull it together Moldova. Karlie comes out with Brandon in a stunning sheer trench. She points out that few people understand how a woman wants to dress more than Brandon Maxwell the CFDA designer of the year. Maybe Sergio, since he’s on Brandon’s level. There is nothing more important than making the client feel good.

The Challenge

The designers are asked to create an editorial look using sheer fabrics. Vat ees sheer? Victoria wants to know. Brandon tells them there is a TASTEFUL way to do sheer. Be sexy without being obvious. The button box comes out and models are chosen. The models get a say in what they are comfortable showing. Nancy picks her same model from last week. She wants to redeem herself. This is the last time immunity will be given and it is a one day challenge.

Dayoung leaves the runway and passes out? Everyone is worried. How is this woman making it through? The associate director comes out and tells her they are worried about her safety. OMG she’s leaving .She is gracious and kind and everyone is going to miss her. We are losing one of the strongest competitors. I hope she comes back for another season. Les and Super C think Marquise is returning??? A la Chris March?

A Big Surprise At Mood!

Nancy is doing a dress inspired by her model DD Smith, the first non-binary model in Project Runway history.  DD never got to go to prom so they want a prom dress. Sergio wants to know how his model met her husband. Apparently she married a badass Chinese-American martial artist. Sergio is of course taking this opportunity to celebrate a model of German descent marrying into a Chinese culture. Because what is a challenge if it doesn’t have social commentary behind it? And he’s going to win. Chelsey is trying to push herself back into the top with a trapeze dress. Geoffrey is worried because he only has a pair of earrings as inspiration.

At mood MARQUISE IS BACK!!!! WOO HOO! He is ready to prove the judges wrong. The Christian Siriano save is also still intact. The designers have $300 and 30 minutes. Christian is yelling at them to spread out. Victoria is upset because she is making the same damn thing she always makes. Apparently this won’t work with sheer fabric. So maybe….DO SOMETHING ELSE? Christian is trying to help her. Oh Victoria. Geoffrey is crying over losing Dayong. He feels responsible. Oh Chelsea. Orange feathers? Christian is horrified.

Sheer Madness

Back in the workroom Marquise gets to consult with his model. She’s cool showing everything but her butt. Girl, we hear you. Sergio tells Nancy sheer shows everything. Christian comes in and announces a twist. Everyone has a heart attack. He is kidding. He is not that evil. He’s just there to give critiques. Brittany is doing a pink poofy shouldered top. (my nightmare). Christian suggests shorts because she is worried about the timing of doing pants. Geoffrey says he wants to go so sheer it reads naked. Delvin tells him this is a bad idea. Geoffrey listens to Delvin. Delvin is worried about his look reading old. Christian tells Nancy to add some more elements to her dress. After last week’s fit disaster she is listening to his advice.

Chelsey is doing a nighty/baby doll look. She’s making her look solid by adding too many layers. Christian explains she is missing the point. They are supposed to be highlighting the body, not covering it up completely. Hopefully she listens. Christian points out to Victoria she is doing the same dress. Les texts: And you are surprised?  She is so stubborn or  maybe a bit talentless. He tells her she can’t do the same dress over and over. She protests that it is totally different. He tells her it is decidedly NOT. She begins to cry. Les texts: “We have a complete Moldova meltdown.”

Chelsey Carter (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

Lost In Translation? I Don’t Think So!

Chelsey is changing everything up. Unlike Victoria, she knows life can be tough, but one has to push through. At 14 years old she basically took over raising her three brothers when her mother was dealing with personal issues. Note that she isn’t crying. Sergio is yammering about being on a different level again. I will spare everyone the details. The models come in and Geoffrey is going “sheer sheer sheer”. There will be pasties.

Christian points out Victoria’s dress isn’t sheer. She claims she doesn’t understand what sheer means. Chelsey doesn’t buy it. Les and I don’t buy it. Christian tries to help again. She doesn’t care. Les thinks she is resigned to go home. Christian makes fun of Geoffreys’ never ending smoke breaks. I tell Les if she is going to adopt Geoffrey she needs to get him to quit.

Brittany Allen (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

The models leave and Victoria is packing to go home? She would rather leave than be on the bottom? Oh my. Everyone tells her to pull it together. Brittany points out that a lot of talented people have left and this is not fair. Victoria says she is just too tired at which point Chelsey tells her they are all tired and that is not an excuse. Her station looks like a tweety bird blew up. She finally comes back in and says she is doing this for her husband who believes in her.

Runway Day

Everyone is exhausted and in a crap mood. Christian tries to talk to Victoria. She is sulky and ignores him. Nancy gets help from Sergio. She is the only person who likes him at this point. Victoria has finally made a dress. Karlie comes out wearing a look that exemplifies what the designers should have been attempting to do. Paloma Elsesser is the guest judge. She is a model who has been in every single important publication. Karlie welcomes Marquise back.

Sergio Guadarrama (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

Sergio Guadarrama. Super C gives a thumbs up to Sergio. Les and I aren’t loving the fringe. I have fringe issues. I just know he’s going to be on the top and freaking talk about the “message” behind the look. At least it’s not a circle skirt.

Brittany Allen. This is a youthful take on a sheer look without reading junior. Les thinks the romper is great form but she can’t stand the color choice. Super C is a thumbs up.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Marquise Foster Les says: Great job Marquise!  Another thumbs up from Super C. I like the skirt.

Geoffrey Mac. I like the contrast of the hard and the soft. Les and I both think this is editorial. Les says: It’s a dash for me at this point. Super C said thumbs down.

Chelsey Carter Les and Cuper C both think this looks like a sheer apron. That is not a compliment. I don’t think it’s that horrible, but it’s probably because I love Chelsey. It’s pretty bad.

Nancy Volpe-Beringer (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

Nancy Volpe-Beringer Nancy has redeemed herself. This is fabulous. Les thinks it is superb, but Super C is worried about the nipple exposure factor.

Victoria Cocieru. We all think this is terrible. Victoria KNOWS it is terrible. Tight, ill-fitting canary dress.

Delvin McCray I LOVE the bottom of Delvin’s look. I wish there was a little more coverage on the top. Les thinks he did a great job. Super C not into this one.

Tops And Bottoms

Les says: My top are Nancy, Delvin and Sergio. Delvin to win. Bottom are Victoria, Chelsey and Brittany. Chelsey to go as much as I hate to say it. As much as I hate to say it, I pick Sergio (blech) Fancy Nancy and Brittany for the top. Chelsey and Victoria for the bottom. Victoria to go.

Brittany and Delvin are safe?? WTF? I’m so confused.

PROJECT RUNWAY — “Sheer Genius” Episode 1808 — Pictured: Designed by Delvin McCray — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

Bottom Three

Nina wants to know why Chelsey went with a nude slip instead of using the blue color to match the bra. Brandon wants to know why she considers her bra a bra. He was waiting for a nip slip. Elaine thinks the fabric choice was wrong. It didn’t move well. Paloma thinks she missed the point of nuances of celebrating a woman’s body.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Geoffrey is on the bottom? Those boobs are bouncing around just as much as Marquise’s model! Karlie hated the sheerness of the top. Brandon thinks he did so much of a waist and shoulder the rest got lost. Elaine wants to know who his clients are. She loves the fact that he designs for a confident strong woman.

Victoria explains she was going to quit she once again blames her language skills. Karlie tells her it is disheartening to hear she was going to quit. Brandon tells her that everyone on the panel has had a public failure. He tells her “This industry is not for babies”.

Pictured: (l-r) Paloma Elsesser, Elaine Welteroth — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

The difference between a good designer and a great designer is someone who will pick themselves up and fight for it. Nina doesn’t want to hear any more excuses from her. Paloma tells her to put her big girl panties on and make lemons out of lemonade with her lemon colored dress. Elaine praises the model’s body? Nina thinks there is something there? WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?

Pictured: (l-r) Sergio Guadarrama, Marquise Foster, Nancy Volpe-Beringer (Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

Top Three

Nina loves the drama of the shoulder on Nancy’s look and says it’s very editorial. She could see it on the pages of Elle Magazine. Paloma thinks it looks expensive and loves the zero waist element. Elaine is very impressed. She’s happy to see her model’s body after the oversized fiasco last week. She loves the old-world glamour with an edge aspect.

Brandon gives Marquise credit for coming back fighting. Paloma thinks the model looks beautiful and she loves what he did with the top. Am I taking crazy pills? Nina asks if he made his own t-shirt. When he says yes, she commends him on incorporating himself into the design.

Click Here For More Project Runway Recaps!

Oh fuck. Here we go. Brandon tells Sergio his model looks perfect. He can’t believe he did this in one day. Nina thinks his construction is genius. Paloma thinks this dress could be worn by every model in the show.

Pictured: (l-r) Elaine Welteroth, Chelsey Carter — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

And The Winner Is…

Victoria hated her criticism. She is acting like a spoiled brat. Oh my God if Kelsey goes home instead of Victoria I’m going to be PISSED. Sergio is the winner (and insufferable). Chelsey is OUT?? AND CHRISTIAN DOESN’T SAVE HER?? I FUCKING HATE THIS EPISODE!!!

Next week Sebastian is back. I hope to have recovered from my rage. I understand that this isn’t Project Nice Person but if Sergio or Victoria win this? Ugh. At least next week we get to see Sebastian Gray! What did you guys think about this episode????

This week, partway through the show I started making a few notes because I forget everything I wanted to say about the show while watching it the next day. So here are some of my thoughts.

YAY For Marquise coming back. I am worried about Dayoung! What is wrong with her? I hope she gets the chance to try again.

Christian pointed to all the sheer fabrics in MOOD and Veronica said she didn’t like any of those. Christian told her to stop making the same damn dress and she didn’t listen.

Who knew Thingin had such huge boobs? Also, how did Thingin get picked so late in the choosing. I thought she would have been first pick! The other stand out model is DD they didn’t get picked too quickly either! Nancy was lucky to get them back!

I loved Chelsey’s look. I don’t get the pool cover comment by …Karlie Kloss. I thought everyone was way too hard on this look. If she had done the skirt in blue and maybe gone a bit more “editorial” with hair and makeup she would have been fine.

I was worried about Fancy Nancy in the workroom. REALLY worried. But on the runway, boy did she check all the boxes. It was one of the few looks I thought was really “editorial” but what do I know?

Oh Victoria. You still did the asymmetrical hem and the side cut out. The dress needs to send you home. As Christians says, “Worst Fabric Ever!”

Delvin’s silhouette was amazing. He’s showing us he could win this whole thing. I am shocked that Brittany and Delvin are just safe. Why don’t these two like Fancy Nancy’s look? I think it is amazing! I hope she wins!

Marquise is on the top??? I mean, good for Marquise, but… I just don’t see the Rodarte that Brandon sees …and I googled images. I thought the sheer mess on her cleavage was going to put him in the bottom!

Sadly, Geoffry is on the bottom. I had him as safe. This is a weird judges table. If Geoff goes does Thingin go too????

I don’t want Sergio to win. I thought the straps over the lady garden was a mistake. Please don’t let him win.
Victoria admits she wanted to quit. Hopefully, that sends her ass home. She needs to go. Damn. They are going to coddle her. They are setting up for the Christian save. If he uses it on Chelsey, great.  If he uses it on Victoria I will want to slap him in the face.

    FANCY NANCY WAS ROBBED.

I hate these judges. Christian better use that save. CHRISTIAN! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU????
Next week they reinvent the tuxedo. I hope someone does a Billy porter ball gown on the bottom and tux on the top look.

It baffles me why Christian hasn’t used his save yet.

It saddens me how Nancy is being treated.

      Victoria needs to GO!

Dayoung doesn’t seem like she handles stress in an industry that is stress.

Great recap! I wish one of the other designers would have helped Victoria pack and called her an Uber with a smile.
She always makes what she wants ( the same dress) and tries to spin it for the challenge. She is a sore loser and threw herself a pity party. The eliminated designers would have given anything to stay in the competition and Victoria was willing to walk away. I guess being a technically great seamstress and one hit wonder out weighs integrity, perseverance and heart.

Victoria was such a b the week before, and a big baby this week. She is a one-trick pony, and while I enjoyed her look at first, now I HATE it. No-one could wear her clothes except a very specific body type.

UGH what an episode. Chelsey should have made it to the end – I really thought she could win the whole thing.

I loved Nancy’s look, and I wish I could hate Sergio’s looks because he’s such an ass. Although he should have been out for that horrendous children-at-the-border dress.
I was so happy Marquise came back, but didn’t think he had a top 3 look. I cringed when it came down the runway. I thought Brittany had a top 3 look and I loved Delvin’s too. I think they don’t like Nancy purely because she’s an Old.

I really liked Victoria until now, I even loved her blue/silver thing. But she should have been OUT for this disaster, AND for quitting, AND for her spoiled brat attitude, AND because Chelsey took time out to convince her to stay. I’m no longer a fan of Victoria.

Karlie’s trench at tasking and Elaine’s blouse at runway were breathtaking. Even if Victoria can blame her English, but Karlie’s trench left no ambiguity or doubt as to the breadth of the challenge.

I totally agree with TT and Sergio’s lady garden fringe. I loved the fabric and fringe on sleeves, and his tailoring was impeccable. The extraneous fringe on the front of the sheath took away from the overall look, imo.

As far as the rest, both Marquise and Delvin made beautiful skirts. While Delvin’s top was bland, I didn’t care for the solid v-neck thing on Marquise’s bodice at all. Fancy Nancy was true to her name this challenge, and I am glad she was in the top. I thought that Brittany’s look was beautiful.Paloma said it well. Neither Victoria nor Chelsey made looks worth wearing anywhere.

I look forward to next week. Everyone needs a little more Sebastian in their life!

I just got to Dayoung’s departure. I haven’t read the recap or comments yet so I apologize if I’m repeating anything but I’m a little choked up by her frailty! Is there something else going on? Sad. I can only imagine how hard both physically and emotionally, people think creativity is a gift, maybe so but it takes a lot of hard work and energy.

Can we all say french seams? Who’s going to get ripped (no pun intended) for ugly finishing. I don’t remember all the names but there’s a curled tight hem that finishes edges perfectly (my old singer uses an attachment, used it on my wedding veil). That jacket Karlie was wearing? Fricking gorgeous!

Ok, see you in a bit!

I guess I was ahead of the trend. Back as far as the 1969s I had zero waste. Because I had next-to-zero money!

Ugh, the IC that is Sergio will be worse next week. I just want to slap him. I am like Cynthia above, regarding Victoria. How quickly she turned my rooting for her into wanting her run out of the competition on a rail. Yup, our Fancy Nancy was robbed. I loved Marquis’ print. I have two sheer silver on black garments hanging in my closet right now. Karlie’s trench was so feminine and Elaine brings it every week with her quirky, chic styling.

Thanks again for the excellent recap.

WTF does Victoria get YET ANOTHER PASS on things that would send a designer home?
Unconventional Materials: Used pillows aka FABRIC
There Is Ony One You: Unless she was an extra in Star Trek, NOTHING
    Ashley Longshore: Used minimal print
Sheer Genius: Her fabric WAS NOT SHEER! Even beyond the fug dress, NOT SHEER!
HOW did she land in Top Three for Uncoventional and Only You?
There is something way wrong here.

As Christian said “ugliest fabric ever,” I said it to my TV. Even IF she did not know the WORD sheer, the EXAMPLES and the steering at Mood by Christian clarified it. I was hoping Victoria would go home so they could bring Shavi back too. Do svidaniya, already!

I think Nancy should have won. (When they flashed to last week’s “huge” coat, I froze my recording. The shoulders and collar FIT. The sleeves FIT. It was pretty much between a trapeze or swing coat and a Boy George coat. It was WAY BETTER than Victoria’s look.) Don’t get the Brittany and Delvin diss.

I kept replaying to see which “she” breaks something next week. Couldn’t tell. I need to replay and check out the rings.

Victoria had plenty of chances to ask both her model and Christian what sheer meant. If you are on a design competition and they say you have to design an XYZ look, you clearly need to learn what XYZ means. When she does the pouting thing, she reminds me of Natalie from Ukraine on 90-day Finance. They are from the same area. Is that how women get their way there?

Chelsea’s look had promise, but she just ran out of time. I’m with Les on the color choice for Brittany’s because the shorts matched her legs too much.

But Victoria DID know, because the contestants explained it when they were first told, and again she knew when she was at Mood. And she bought sheer. She just wanted to make only what she wants to make, and she’s using that as an excuse. I think she made some gorgeous dresses early on, but if that’s the only the can do then she doesn’t belong on Project Runway. I’m going to be so mad if she wins now.

I really liked the idea Chelsey was going for. If she’d gotten the skirt done she might have squeaked through. I’m so sad she’s gone.

Thanks for the great recap CJ . Quite frankly I do not understand the judging on PR. I do however, understand the judging on the new Netflix fashion reality show. Next In Fashion.

OMG!!!!! its so good, most of the designers are uber talented. Each episode has a theme e.g. street wear, military and the guest judges are successful designers associated with the theme, e.g. military, founders of the label Public School were judges. Denim episode Tommy Hilfiger. Top quality and relevant designers and stylist, how did Netflix make this happen? and Bravo has child actresses!

Nearly forgot, they have to dress a male and female model for every challenge! Such a great show.

Much more interaction with the judges and contestants post runway. Next In Fashion seems less contrived and its not gimmicky like PR. I definitely recommend it if you like PR.

I begrudgingly watched the first episode of Next In Fashion, but was addicted immediately. Love it!

As for this episode of PR, Victoria! clocked her as basic very early on. I don’t mind Sergio too much. Marquise love him, but the top was awful.

I was hoping you had started watching it CJ. It’s refreshing to listen to judges who are consistent.

Next In Fashion is SO GOOD! It’s REALLY about the fashion.

I love Alexa Chung and Tan France together.

The designers are like Top Chef chefs compared to the Hell’s Kitchen chefs (hit and miss) on PR.

No cheesy little notes and stupid twists. No showing people sleeping and eating. No childish drama.

I enjoy getting to see Mood and Swatch, but NIF’s wonderfully curated fabric closet for each episode — I die for. They can go back to get more stuff as many times as they want — no budget, no time limit. (One fabric was $650 a yard.)

Every designer has a dedicated work station — their own Juki, work table, ironing board, their own drawer FULL of rotary cutters and shears (not sheers, Victoria!), and drawer PACKED with markers and pens and colored pencils.

EVERY designer gets a critique EVERY time. They all focus on FASHION. But still inspire and support each other. The losing looks are usually really good, just not as good as the others.

They came out strong with a Red Carpet look the first episode. Two days and GORGEOUS looks. I was hooked.

Not just another cheesy PR wannabe — this is the real thing for those who want their fashion without the childish crap and product placements. (Red soles vs. JC Penny and M.A.C. vs. Maybelline without obnoxious push.)

I am loving Next in Fashion for all that you have listed. The runway shows are AMAZING! I am watching ep 8 now. The time restraints are similar, yet the garments are still gorgeous pieces.
I hope they do another season.
That fabric closet is ridiculous, I also love that they add, “if there is something else you want, let us know. We want you to design for your dreams.”

I thought a zero waist means the dress doesnt go in at the hips? Like a dress that just goes out from the neck and isnt cinched at the waist?

they said zero waste. I have hearing issues so I watch TV with closed caption. Nancy also mentioned that she took the remaining pieces of fabric and tucked them into that piece that went around the neck

SUPER recap, y’all, thank you so much! I look forward to your recaps all week!

Chelsea was ROBBED! Her dress was not that bad, and was truer to the theme of the challenge than Victoria’s Big Bird dress! I agree with Christian, Worst. Fabric. Ever! Horrible and cheap-looking, on that beautiful model! I can’t believe the judges caved and let Miss Whiny-Pouty stay!

I liked Sergio’s dress except for too much fringe. Too car-washy. He did help Nancy so he’s back in my good graces again– on probation! I thought the win should have gone to Nancy. I liked Delvin’s and Brittany’s, too.

I loved Dayoung’s aesthetic, and I’m going to miss her. Praying for a full recovery for her.

Marquise should not have been in the top. I thing he was in the top to justify bringing him back AND to have one of the larger models in the top.
Alll of the models should be the same size and have a couple of challenges with larger models for everyone. What made the Karlie challenge so great was all of the Karlie clone models. Notice the two larger gals were the last ones selected. They are harder to design for and lets face it, it takes more fabric. Not fair when they all get the same amount to spend.
Victoria was safe because she has won a couple of challenges and they did not want to eliminate a design for a larger model-again.
I say all of this as a size 14 myself.

Regardless of your size, you are not going to get very far on this site with this opinion. It has been discussed to death here that designers need to learn to flatter all sizes. That is the very reason we have models of all sizes, heights and shapes on the show now. The show has DELIBERATELY chosen to have models of all sizes.

So please do not let this be a recurring theme for your comments because we have eliminated all the people with this attitude from the comments previously. I am sure they all migrated to some site that allows such ridiculous comments. Perhaps you should find such a site if have models of all sizes is an issue for you.

Look at the fabric requirements on patterns; I think you would be surprised. Most better fabrics are 58/60” and not 44/45.” All the models are tall. Length often makes a lot bigger difference in total yardage necessary than circular body measurements. Now if PR had petite models mixed with traditional height, one could more logically argue unfairness regarding fabric budget. Karlie uses significantly more fabric for trousers than would a 5 foot model with a 28 inseam. And I say this as a girl with short legs who has often found petite trousers to have inseams that are too long. I also say this a a chubby girl who sews.

I NEVER use the cutting layout on the pattern. I ALWAYS cut every fabric as if it has nap. (Light can make subtle differences.) I never had to use as much fabri as the pattern says… when I went up a size it was the same. When I went up another size, I needed more fabric. It depends on where you can place the patterns to get them on the width. So not EVERY pattern will require more for long legs than added width. Some patterns take more for us short-legged.

One reason I love Next In Fashion (Netflix). The designers get fabric from a magical closet, no budget, no time limit, return trips as often as they want. So good. Female and male models. Inclusive sizes.

A true designer can design a look that will flatter all body types. That’s part of the challenge. Being able to work with a variety of body types. Part of that involves knowing how to budget correctly when you go to Mood. If you can’t make adjustments based on the amount of fabric you need. You shouldn’t be on Project Runway. And Victoria wasn’t safe because her model was a different size then Geoffrey or Chelseys. She was safe because the Judges feel like she is “fresh and new”. So they’ve given her more then one “second chance”

I say this as someone who is a size 6 and has struggled on and off with body image issues. Think of how your words/terminology (larger gal/larger model) might affect someone reading your comment.

What a boring world it would be if we all looked the same…..

Sorry for the long post TT

I think Geoffrey was safe already, but they needed a bottom three. He wasnt in danger, I just hope this doesnt mess with his confidence.
Chelsea’s dress was pretty ugly, I mean really ugly but Victoria had to go home, between her attitude, her walking out, her refusal to complete the task as directed and making another side-mullet dress…Hopefully she will go next week.
I thought Sebastian was not as preachy as he usually is, and I did like his dress but Nancy was the best by far. I just love her.
I am also glad Marquise didnt go home, on Top Chef they often bring someone back and then they go home on the very next challenge. I want him to stick around a little bit.

Top for me were Brittany, Delvin and Nancy.all 3 created pretty garments with interesting silhouettes. I thought Sergio and Chelsey should have been safe.. wasn’t crazy about the fringe and thought the sheer jacket was actually kind of interesting and pretty. Bottom.. Marquise, Geoffrey and definitely Victoria. For sure V. Should have went home.. and not just for her attitude. She did not meet the challenge. She did not use sheer fabric. I just am really perplexed by this episode.

I recall Tim Gunn responding to someone saying that sometimes it sees rigged. He said he would never sand for that and if he got a whiff of that he would be gone. Well … I trust Christian, but he doesn’t have the weight that TG had and now that he IS gone, there isn’t such a strong moral compass. Something is rotten in Moldova.

So I watched the after show with Christian and Chelsey last night. She is one cool girl! Just class and class and more class. I adore her! Chelsey specifically asked what the judges see in Victoria. Christian’s response basically confirmed some of my thinking – the judges see a “new look” in her clothes that she designs. Now given, there is no dimension to her one outfit but they must have faith that she can be pushed further.

I’m not happy with the reasoning but it was the only way I could come to terms with why she was always in the top when I selected her for the bottom.

Zero Waste is all about being more environmental since the fashion industry is one of the worst when it comes to carbon footprint.

Thank you Ingrid – they needed a 3rd bottom designer so they threw in Geoffrey.

Can’t wait for next week because I’m curious if Victoria will know what a Tuxedo is!!!!!!!!!!

Victoria will make a short tuxedo dress with an asymmetrical buckled strap and cutout. Maybe hang a chain or two on it. And the judges will say it’s the most innovative thing since Christian’s look for Billy Porter and it’s OH-SO-EDITORIAL.

Victoria appears to be a one-note, and the disrespect for her model’s glorious curves, and the challenge itself, was criminal. But, she’s talented, and if she can get out of her own way, she may surprise herself and the rest of us.
I hated Geoffrey’s look, but at least he had a concept. As for Sergio, you could not deny his workmanship, but the front fringe was superfluous. Nancy’s was my absolute favorite and Didi rocked the hell out of it. I didn’t hate her look last week, but I made those pants in 8th grade. A little less jacket and I would have loved it.
Brittany’s shorts looked funky to me, and I hated those puffy sleeves and the baby pink. Chelsey, trying to listen to Christian, changed her look too much to have time to make it work, but I liked where she was going.
What makes this season exciting is that there’s no clear winner.
Thanks for the insightful recap, CJ et al. I always learn something when I read your takes.

I think Sergio’s technical ability saves him a lot. The man is acts like a jerk but his ability to sew and tailor garments is awesome. I just don’t understand how the judges can think all women could wear or would want to wear the side cut out long short mess that Victoria constantly designs. At some point one of the judges is going to point this out right?

I’m late to the party but gotta add my 2 cents. My favorites were Delvin, Nancy and Brittany, so I was shocked to see 2 were “safe.” I would have had Sergio, Marquise and Geoffrey as safe. I thought the fringe was an unnecessary distraction. Didn’t care for the neckline draping on Marquise dress. Reminded me of a valance from the 80s. Didn’t care for Geoffreys color choice and the abrupt transitions.

Chelsey and Victoria deserved the bottom. Chelsey had a cute design initially and should have modified it to better meet the challenge. I have loved her style and character, wished Christian had used his save. How Victoria survived is beyond me. The dress was ugly, didn’t fit, poorly constructed and her attitude stunk. Apparently Moldovan women can wear all sort of cut out clothes, but sheer is beyond. Few women over 21 will wear clothes with multiple straps and cutouts either.

I think I stated earlier that ‘lil Vicky is a one trick pony. The best designers have a timelessness with their personal stamp on it. For example, I was fortunate to visit the Yves St. Laurent museum- jaw dropping- I would have jumped into any of the clothing displayed! I probably wouldn’t have worn her clothes when I was young and style conscious.

I agree that Victoria’s looks are too repetitive, and often don’t reflect the challenge, but I think she got some unfairly harsh comments because she almost quit. We all have bad days, and it took her out of the loop for a couple hours, but then she pulled it together and sent a look down the runway in two hours. I think she should have gotten more respect for pulling herself together and getting the job done. She’s not very warm, so I think they dealt with her more harshly than they would have treated someone more likeable who had a hard time.

Sergio’s dress was pretty; however, it wasn’t the most original and the fringe was bad. Nancy should have taken it.

Of course I agree with everyone else the victoria should have gone over chelsey, but project runway tends to keep people who have won multiple challenges.
