Project Runway Recap: Blast Off!

PROJECT RUNWAY — “Blast Off” Episode 1801 — Pictured: (l-r) Dayoung Kim, Christian Siriano — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

It is time for a new season of Project Runway and an new season of Project Runway recaps.  I regret to inform you that CJ Bomb is out of commission for a a bit and will be returning with all of her fashionista recaps soon. In the mean time, you are stuck with me.  And if we are lucky, The Lovely Les will be sending in some commentary. Otherwise, I’d just be saying things like, “I’d kind of just rather live in my Dollar Tree reindeer pants and old man pajamas from Target, because what’s the point?” Also, I am remembering now why this is all such a nightmare to recap. Bravo doesn’t want to spoil the show so they don’t put up the looks until the next day. So recaps will go up on Friday.

The show has not even started yet and I already need about six people gone. II am grouchy. And I think I am actually sick which explains my random poor pitiful me thing. I blame my new kid. Kids are germy. UGH.

PROJECT RUNWAY — “Blast Off” Episode 1801 — Pictured: (l-r) Brandon Maxwell, Karlie Kloss — (Photo by: Barbara Nitke/Bravo)

I have watched the show twice now and don’t really have much to say about the designers.  A few of them seem to think they are better designers than the judges. Diego for one is clearly not interested in any advice from Christian. So why is he there?  Also these people had more than two days to do one look and they still struggled to finish? How will they survive a one day challenge?

I wish they would have had more regular people struggling for an opportunity and not all of the braggadocios  jerks.

Brittany deserved to be in the top four. The other three not so much. My guy with the hat and the Asian woman did not deserve to be in the bottom.  The two that went home needed to go go.

I didn’t hear from The Lovely Les so she apparently was as speechless as I was regarding this episode. Also Bravo didn’t release the runway photos. So it is basically like this whole episode never happened. We start again next week with 14 designers.

I agree normal upcoming designers, not “I need my brand out there” seems more relatable . (Lol, in my world)

Sergio is a bit of a snob. Tsk, tsk, tsk. I’m not even well educated on Project Runway (especially the Bravo season) but I’m going to give it a go. Looks possibly entertaining.

Yeah screw Sergio “I’m on the same level as Christian Siriano”. Ummmm, no you’re not! You’re a contestant on his show!
I prefer the non-established designers, too.
Haven’t finished watching, but I’m thinking the girl who did the dark blue jumpsuit without the sleeves is going home. I feel bad for her but damn! You had 2 days and couldn’t even make some sleeves?!

I LOVE this show and have a slightly different take. To me having experienced designers is similar to having experienced chefs on Top Chef. Having strong competition makes the show more entertaining to me.

I completely agree. Some up and coming designers might be fun, but these people should know how to do it. And then give us a good runway show. Watching mediocre designers and fashion isn’t that to fun.

I can’t wait until that Sergio guy gets ripped a new one. To say he’s on the same level as Christian Siriano and Brandon Maxwell is beyond hubris. What an oversized ego! No one has captured me yet but that’s to be expected. I was glad both of those women went home. Not sure they ever did that before, but it was warranted.

He somehow thinks he is on the same level as designers who have dressed the First Lady and mopany major celebs and are in the CFDA.

      Then why didn’t he win?

Because Brittany’s look is amazing. I loved that he didn’t win. Brittany is AMAZING an humble. Then was it Delvin who just took a nap? I kind of get it because mere mortals have been stuck with ONE DAY challenges for years. So I can see him getting done early, but he needed to have made sure it was perfect. CLEARLY, it was not.

I was wondering if his candy bar break was the reason his team didn’t end up in the top. I thought that his team and Brittany’s team were by far the best with her totally deserving the win.

I GOT THE COMMENTS BELOW FROM The Lovely Les…

Key word for the night was collaboration and innovation are what works – mantra for the season!

Alan completely freaks out as it already appears he does not like team challenges.

Lots of the pairings seem to actually work out but a few are eye openers! Especially the Victoria and Veronica scenario.

My first ever lab coat was one of my favorites.

Love the tender relationship that started between Alan and Dayoung – especially Alan speaking to her in Spanish because her husband is a latino.

Can’t get over the age range of the designers – age 24 to age 64.

Found Geoff’s description of growing up to be rather interesting. He used fashion as a defense mechanism which is why he designs a lot of his clothing as armor.

My favorite moment of the night was when Victoria took stage left when Christian was in the middle of his review of their outfits! LOL!!!!

    D. Kim had quite a moment with her breakdown – not so sure why it was so severe.

CS – “You think you are done! You are not done!!!!!!!”

I loved the black jumpsuit by Brittany and Sergio! Sergio’s cocktail dress did nothing for me.

Chelsey/Shavi – Loved the silver quilted jumpsuit but the paired cocktail dress was not futuristic enough.

Geoff/Melanie – felt like I had seen the same jumpsuit on Blondie a long time ago. So I was surprised when it received so much praise.

    Jenn/Asma had no cohesion.

V&V looks reminded me of the Flintstones. No space age nothing going on.

Loved Marquis off the shoulder jumpsuit.

Delvin and Tyler was overly dominatrix looking and needed a softening touch somewhere.

    Top 3 – Brit/Sergio; Chelsey/Shavi; Marquis/Nancy

    Bottom 3 – Geoff/Melanie; Delvin/Tyler; Alan/D.Kim

    Win – Brittany

    Lose – Tyler or Geoff

I was a bit off of my judging! Can’t wait to read the recap!

Thank you Les! I haven’t watched yet, I like to savor PR and I’m kinda in and out today so I may save for a later date.

CJ? I hope you feel better sooner rather than later but don’t rush! Heal.

Tt, you crack me up, you like to say you know nothing when it comes to PR but you’re usually spot on and when you’re not I think I agree with your opinions. Hope you two are feeling better today….

Thanks Les and TT. Two designers aufed on the first episode made me happy. I like the look of a jumpsuit, but not the having to strip to pee aspect. You made me snort tea at Flintstones.

I used to make/design a lot of my clothing because tall and skinny is not easy to find off the rack. I would have loved couture.

I thought this was a great opener! I think we will be getting some great fashion from this group! Usually they throw in 1 or 2 because they are quirky – but they aren’t that talented. Everyone seems to be very talented! Most of the people really brought it – first time out! (Except for the 2 that went home & I think that was a good decision) Brittany’s jumpsuit was fantastic. Judging from her own personal outfit – I was expecting something holly hobbyish – but she brought it! Can’t wait to see what everyone does next week.

I picked Veronica in the opening scene, cuz I liked her Stevie Nicks vibe/hair/look. Then she said she was “bridal” and I know I am doomed. But my own internally imposed rule won’t allow me to change designers until she is auf’ed. LES: What was the eye opener with V & V you mention in your comment?

I loved the regal looking priest guy for not being “afraid” to pair off with older lady.

Did you notice Nina was introduced FIRST even tho’ she’s still sitting in the middle?

I think both deserved to go, but also think they were hesitant to auf just the Muslim lady. Were those tatoos or gloves?

BRAVO is rocking the revamping of this show! 2 day challenges are so much better, but agree with TT that those that could hardly finish will be in a world of hurt when they shorten the challenge or add a “twist”.

It’s so hard to believe that I hardly miss Tim Gunn. Christian Siriano is everything. Especially the snark. Loved when he said something like “Lose the poncho” in Mood LOL.

I did a bit of research prior to the 9:30pm start time since I was waiting to blog since 7:30pm last night. The website (bravotv.com) had some good trailers with short bios and such of each of the 16 designers. Victoria says her design aesthetic is clean, edgy, powerful, sexy for women. Veronica said her aesthetic is extreme romanticism and very feminine – think Victorian type of influence. So I was enjoying how the opposites were going to work out and they ended up doing quite well – not for the actual design win but on how they treated each other very respectfully. With Asma, I felt like she really stamped out any opportunity for Jenn to show her point of view. I actually had my laser eyes out for both of those pairs.

That was neither ratios, nor gloves. It was a henna design. Henna design guns on the hands is a very popular Middle Eastern and Indian/Pakistani custom for women. Women from those countries usually have a henna party the night before their weddings, which is a big celebration.

I wish NO ONE EVER would go home on the first challenge, so I really hate that two went home. I hate that they had a team challenge for the first one. There are so many things going on during the first challenge — jet lag, flying anxiety — in addition to the design situations. We don’t get to see who the designers are when they leave on the first night — maybe send two home on the second challenge, or award points for the first two and low score(s) leave.

I LOVE the saves. There have been times on every season that someone had a shit day or a shit partner and was sent packing. I think this would have changed the outcome many seasons. Think of Sonny from last season. Not saying it would change the eventual winner, just that some people — again Sonny — would have been so much fun to watch.

Speaking of fun … I LOVE that Hester Sunshine is on the 3-M picture hanger ads. Sometimes, a person is talented and fun and kind and GOOD THINGS HAPPEN even if they don’t win. I do not remember who won Top Chef during Carla Hall’s season, but look where talent, quirkiness and kindness got her.

TT- Thank you for the recap. I agree with you, my old man PJs( short sleeves& short pants) are my comfort zone. I didn’t like Sergio from the moment he compared himself to successful designers. I love the seasoned Nancy. She is cool and stylish with looking like she shops in the junior section. My mom and I are rooting for her and the girl that won.. I couldn’t wrap my head around Asma. I don’t know anything about traditional Muslim fashion and maybe I’m way off base but it seemed she was pushing it to a trendy tacky place that doesn’t fit with the mystic and beauty I’ve seen in some Muslim fashion.

What got me was her comment about COTTON being a crappy fabric to work with. Cotton is my VERY FAVORITE fabric ever. Back when the Cotton Council was a sponsor of PR, I was hoping for a challenge related to its ads featuring Runway to Real Life using cotton where the models would leap off the runway and out the door. Something like cotton for evening wear — NO GUNNE SACKS LOOKS — or for cocktail or wedding. Still hoping for that. (My brain is blooping trying to remember the haute counter designer who I love who most liked cotton. French? CJ would know, I am sure.)

I did like the team challenge on the first episode. I think it allowed for a different pecking order scenario to play out. I felt like the team challenge even made for the rooming choices at the house so much easier. But I understand that it did not allow viewers to get know each designer and therefore fall in or out of love for whomever. Assuming next week is when more claws will be coming out. Guesses to who that may be? I think Alan and Sergio.

Also, I just watched Christian’s new recap with the auf’d designers. Those ladies had so much class sitting down with CS. The one thing that Christian kept highlighting was how incompatible the two were. He wondered how they ended up together and they pointed out – they were the last ones left so they had to pair up.

And if you google the Blondie single of Dreaming – the album cover reminds me a lot of Geoff’s creation. Until next week, have a wonderful weekend : )

I had to watch three times because … knitting … on deadline. I already like the Texans. The MACARONS. I was rooting for Brittany to win. I loved her self-described esthetic of “Dolly Parton and Betsy Johnson have a baby raised by Anna Wintour.” I would change Wintour to a “parent” and Dolly as the one raising the kid. I wouldn’t have hated the team challenge for the first if no one had to go home. First challenge should always be a bye week, for the designers — and the viewers. I hope I keep liking Nancy AND her designs. I like to root for oldies, “babies,” and homies. Most of all I root for the ones who have known struggle in their education or early design situations. But only if they are GOOD. Come on … Christian S. lived AND designed in a tiny closet. Made his entire winning collection in that closet!

So excited PR is back! I feel like all the changes they have made really work, but my favorite is that when they send the safe designers off the stage, they show you their looks again. This is so helpful, particularly at the start of the season when you don’t have a good handle on anyone. Although to be honest, I need it pretty much up until the final 5.
