Y’all I crashed early and I woke up to… love. I am so grateful and it wasn’t just my prayer partners… is was everyone. I joined a neighborhood group a bit ago and I HAVE NOT BEEN KICKED OFF YET! It’s like a miracle and my adopted child is going to get a great bike. I ordered a lock in advance of this blessing.
When I was a kid, I was living in the Chicago area. I was a wee one puzzled by the Kotex ads. I clearly remember Jimmy Carter being a candidate. He was sort of my link to Georgia where I was from. I had been dragged from Libya to Glenview where I got my first period and also tried to cut my hair to look like Toni Tenille.
So enough about me. But really, I love you all. But it is Giving Tuesday, Please if you can only give a dollar THAT WILL HELP! This is my favorite charity. I promise this is a real charity and does real things and some of you want to send me stuff. I would much prefer you donate here. I am exceedingly blessed and have everything I need.
Love this. All of it! ❤️
Awww Tamara! So nice of you. You are a blessing to him as well as to all of your readers! Have a great day!
I love this too!! What a great idea. Everyone can afford $1.00. Plus, I seriously have thought about reaching out to you to donate to your lawn boy.
Yay!! I’m loving all you’re doing to help this young man fulfill his potential. You’re truly wonderful and I’m so glad you have each other.
This post warms my heart.
Glenview? I am from NWIndiana. You watch Svengoolie and Ray Rayner? Mmm. You are probably younger.
Menses! Yup, those ads (esp Tampax, which NO ONE would explain to me). At our Catholic school, I held the dubious honor of having Tampax in my purse. When the SEX LECTURE happened, someone asked about them. Mrs. Jansen, in her soft Tennessee lilt, said “well, honey, it’s easier to demonstrate than explain “. I volunteered my extra for the cause of education.
Anyone else read the best book on menses (at that time) “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret”
Finally, here is my Tuesday giving comment. Every shelter needs new socks for their guests. (In St Louis, I appreciate that the people who go to a shelter are referred to as guests.) Anyway, all shelters need, and get, socks. Sturdy, black or white mens socks. Since I tend to be…picky, I know how great good socks are. But children, babies, women, the elderly, may not be able to wear men’s socks. Childrens’ socks, cute socks, compression socks. Shelters may need special socks. Call shelter before buying, to get the shelter’s Amazon delivery address. Many shelters cannot directly get deliveries for various reasons.
Judy Blume or Bloom!! I read everything she wrote as pretween. I buy bombas socks. They are literally the best sock ever plus they donate a pair for every pair you buy.
Me too, the Bomba sucks. Yes socks, also my DIL makes up ziplock bags of the toiletries we all bring home from our hotel stays. She adds several pairs of socks, chap stick etc. plus does a few women only bags that have samples she and others have gathered over the year.
For a few years she put &2.00 in each bag. She felt everyone needs a dollar or two in there pocket
Admire her thinking
I love the Diabetic Comfort Socks from CVS. Only about $7 for 3 pair for black. They last forever and are VERY comfortable. Like a warm hug on your feet,
I’m in. ?
I just moved two months ago. I learned that for a $300 donation, one could feed the entire dining room at the local homeless shelter for the evening.. I decided to forgo a few luxuries so my son and I could donate at least two nights. I’m waiting to donate a little more into in the year because that’s when they have dry spells. Everyone wants to clean the pots at Thanksgiving but no one shows up in April or Julyto help and funds run low as well.
Planned parenthood is also having a matching funds drive now, it’s only for a few more weeks. Some very generous people are MATCHING donations! If you can donate $10, it will be worth $20. It all adds up!
TT, I hope it works out with this young man. I know you’re excited, I would feel exactly the same. You like to present yourself as a curmudgeon but you’ve got a good heart. Follow your gut and take it slowly.
Best wishes.
Yes, matchy-matchy, always, whenever possible! I was a scholarship student, even though mostly attended in California when tuition was almost nothing. However, those honors (the most prestigious award was only 10 bucks!) made my CV gold, so the first thing I did when I graduated was start founding scholarships for other students as a way to pay forward. My late Rocket Man was in aerospace (duh) & his company matched my all tiny donations, so they weren’t quite so insignificant after all. I named the initial scholarship after my first anthropology prof & she was so thrilled that her husband endowed the award, so nearly half a century later my $25 teensy scholarship donation that got immediately doubled, then endowed to I don’t know what is still honoring my now late prof & helping students beef up their vitae. It became the little scholarship engine that could. Another tiny scholarship of mine was taken over by the Anthro Dept. of a University Alma Mater of mine & still continues. So you never know what little kernels can grow beyond your initial dreams. Donate what you can, but remember to seek out sources for matching in your circle of family & friends, too.
My lawn kid says he has good grades and wants to go to trade school. Which is fine. But I’d be all for sending him to Georgia Southern or somewhere where he could be in school and not have to work and support is family if anyone is with me.
A scholarship fund could be set up that would be so restrictive that only he could qualify for it & donations would be deductible if done right. Thinking caps, everyone, but we can’t get ahead of what is right & true for your boy–
Trade schools are the best, The trades out here after aporentiship the journey wages are about
$80,000ca year. They include the best insurance and retirement. My sons insurance beats his wife’s at a top company where she is earning just under 100,000 a year. A journeyman electrician, iron worker I know make close to
$100,000 year with a little overtime.
Don’t knock the trade’s as to income and life’s needs. Insurance for his/her entire family is the best. They are always in demand.
Totally agree. My husband is a welding inspector and makes more money that my fancy master’s degree got me! Linemen, welders, plumbers, always a need anywhere in the country!
I agree! I need to talk with him about what he wants to do. I am really overwhelmed about this fake mom thing. KIDS ARE A LOT! I am too old and too socially awkward for this! 🙂
If the schools there are anything like here in California, the community (ne JC) colleges have trade programs. You can attend when you still are in HS, although LB likely does not have the time.
I am leery of trade schools for three reasons:
1. I went to one that was highly thought of and it was expensive and it was bogus shit and was closed down.
2. I know three people who taught at 3 schools and were completely UNQUALIFIED. There is a reason for teacher credentials.
3. They are expensive. My lawyer told me he worked his way through law school on collections for trade schools where he learned tuition is based on the highest amount federal student loans allow. Having fed loans lends them an air of credibility most do not deserve and implies they are of value.
The programs are shorter than community colleges, so you are out working sooner. But you owe so much for student loans, you may as well take the better, cheaper route — you will come out ahead.
Most Unions have apprenticeship programs. I should NOT had said trade schools. Apprenticeships are offered to any person that is employed out here in California. You apply for a job, they know you are not trained, they hire you and you work for them while taking classes. Books were free for Ironworkers from the Union.
He needs to get out and find people who can help him. The Ironworker picked that career after graduating from a 4 year university with a business degree. All about steady employment and wages.
Let’s just make sure he graduates high school before we all plan his life for him. 🙂
I had a Toni Tenille haircut! Hated it because I wanted the Dorothy Hamill haircut and was told my hair wasn’t right for it.
Jesus Christ. I just told someone who was worried about a comment to calm down. And now I see a post that is about me getting my period and cutting my hair in the bathroom? WTF? Perhaps it it time for me to retire. lol. APOLOGIES.
Not everyone can afford a dollar so there’s that. I got laid off right after being licensed for Foster Care so I couldn’t take any children. I have my house, with a house payment. Plus the farm my Mom gave me. Animals that I have to feed. Bills to pay, a car payment to make. I’m working my ass off, literally, to get by right now. So I’m happy everyone is able to give, but sometimes the floor is pulled out from underneath you and a small amount of money makes a big difference.
You really should just start believing in Santa Claus… I’m just saying. BELIEVE!
Gift cards are always a good option. Especially in a festive little container so there is something to unwrap.
TT what about individual fast food gift cards as a small secondary gift? I could maybe do that but shopping for gifts I can’t do. I would not have a clue. Is there a McDonalds or ?? nearby? Money for a meal on your pocket is always a good thing, right?
Certainly others could do similar and leave the shopping to those that know or enjoy it.
This makes me so happy !!! Happiness and more happiness! Go girl!
Where oh where is our huntress with the new boots. I need to know if they are lucky boots and the rest of the info from the hunt.
Maybe she got eaten by a moose?
