Blind Item: Fish Out Of Water

November 7, 2019 by tamaratattles 73 Comments

A friend of mine just told me about this young lady who has been admitted to college for next year. First of all, when did they start doing college admissions in the student’s junior year? Is that a thing now?

Anyway, the reality show offspring is a smart, good, Christian young lady. She goes to church, she volunteers her time. She travels to other countries to be of service.  (Sidenote: I did all of that and well, I had a decade of sluttiness afterward and turned into some cunt with a website on the Internet that is mean to people. So, um…)

Anyway, I digress. This beautiful young Christian lady from a wealthy (and scandalous) family is thrilled to be accepted by a southern religious school. The private school is kind of on the pricey side. But that is not the problem.

Blind ItemThe problem is, this is a southern Baptist college. I am sure it is a fine school to go to if you were raised in the south and kind of know how things work down here. But this young lady has no idea what she is getting into. And she has led a very sheltered life. This college has made headlines for rapes on the campus. Their frat parties are legendary. Despite the mandatory religion class or two, there are only two real majors. Football and getting shitfaced.

My concern for this girl is that she has been so sheltered her entire life in a completely different world that this will be a really bad experience for her. They should have just “put her on the rowing team” and applied to USC. I don’t see this as a good fit at all.

She will be fine. Both my son in law and daughter in law graduated from there. It’s not truly a religious institution anymore; and there are NOT mandatory religion classes unless your major is in that direction. I think USC would have been much worse for her. Also it will be good for her to get away from the OC and her idiotic naked dad and his stupid naked girlfriend.

It’s worse than TT thinks. Anyone would be a fool to send a daughter there in the current climate. I have friends who have daughters and even though they are legacies, they are transferring them out of there. Girls are getting raped by frat boys and the good ole boy system down here is literally letting them get away with $400 and $500 fines and not registering as sex offenders. At least she’s probably familiar with the term TRAIN because of the shitshow her mom is on!

Unfortunately, you’re describing almost every college today. Rape is common. It’s often by someone the victim knows and it’s most often in a frat house or occasionally a dorm.. If the perpetrator is a white male, the consequences are often minimal. Girls need to be well trained in how to protect themselves.

No it’s not. I’m an Alum, 2009 as are both of my sisters. One was an athletic trainer for the football team and both the men’s and woman’s basketball team and she had no problems. Any school that size can and will have issues. She will not “be eaten alive”, she will more than likely have a wonderful college experience and get a fabulous education.

Again I’m not saying bad things don’t happen on college campuses but instead they happen on ALL campuses.

I just have to say, as an objective international observer, it’s NOT like for like.

The Baylor scandals have reached Australian news outlets. Yes, we hear dribs and drabs about college scandals more generally here and there, but not on the level of Baylor, or MSU in the wake of the Nassar scandal. The only other college we heard about in this way was the Penn State stuff, and that was obviously more due to the football connection than anything else.

I am just reading the guesses from this blind, so sadly TT, for the first time i am going to disagree with you here. If it is indeed the Beador girl, I feel the best thing for her is to get out of the “OC Bubble” as many parents put it. If she stays in the OC and goes to USC, she will just be on the same hamster track where she has to have a new BMW, designer wardrobe, party with other USCers and eventually find a USC hubby with a multimillion dollar home. She will never get out of the same track as her mom, trying to climb the USC ladder and staying in the OC is a no win game. I feel she will truly have a chance in life to get away from the turmoil of her parents situation, and escape a permanent slot as an OC housewife, if she can attend Baylor. I noticed you wrote this about Baylor “Their frat parties are legendary. Despite the mandatory religion class or two, there are only two real majors. Football and getting shitfaced.” Are you sure that could not be said about many colleges? As someone who has grown up in Southern CA, spent weekends at USC, as well as lived in the South, I would vote for a change, even if it is Baylor. Also, students who score well on the SAT, can now get admits in Junior year, so she could get into other colleges as well, possibly. I am not sure this is a done deal, just the announcement of her first acceptance.

Sorry, but I think it’s a terrible fit and agree with TT in that respect. Baylor might not be the worst school academically. But she will indeed be a fish out of water. It’s literally up on a hill in Waco.

It’s the student population that is the problem. It’s a bunch of entitled trust fund kids who parents pay decorators to design dorm rooms and then their houses bought for them off campus. It’s a shopping desert. The kids go to Austin or private jets to Houston to keep up with their fashion and other must haves, sometimes just to get a nice dinner and out to the club where they have VIP tables and bottle service with their fake IDs. Most of them have known each other all through private school circles since kindergarten through their elaborate debutant balls. They are very clique like and don’t take in outsiders well. They will give her incessant shit because of her parents.

It’s the old money Baptists and the old money ones look down on the nouveau riche. They tried to do a housewives down in Houston and no one would stoop so low as to agree to something like that. It’s their kids who go there. I have friends who were approached for a housewives and a married to medicine and were like hell no!

I’m scared for her. She’s been way too sheltered and she won’t fit in. There’s still a Branch Dividiian presence in Waco and I know two people who lost their Catholic daughters to the cult because they didn’t feel like they fit in. It’s really awful currently. They’ve spent millions trying to keep a lot out of the press, and are making administrative changes to try to get back on track. But this institution is in the midst of a transitional crisis. People of course don’t want it to be public knowledge! Not to mention it is normal not to graduate in 4 years. These kids are stunted; either by the excessive partying or because they keep changing majors so they can stay on the financial tit and milk student status as long as possible Van Wilder style.

Maybe I’m too close to it or know too much from my IRL contacts, but I fear for Sophie if this is indeed her school of choice. She has no idea what she’s in for. And if she decides to rush, they will be RUTHLESS on her because of her parents.

I take no pride in knowing what I know or being close to this institution that was previously beloved. A simple google search with the name of the school and the word rape will yield results that barely scratch the surface of what is actually going on. There are still rapists running freely around campus. It’s happened to children who are friends with my own. But it happens more frequently to the girls who are “outsiders” not from here, as if their thinking they are better targets because no one in their bubble knows them.

Sorry but I am feeling very emotional about this because it’s such a scary and awful situation and I don’t think Shannon or David have a clue where they’re actually sending their beautiful, smart, Sophie, who seems to have a heart of gold. It will crush her soul.

Rant over I guess but it makes me want to cry.

Disclaimer: All of the above is an opinion and any perceived accusations are ALLEGEDLY.

Having said that, also, there are quite a few well known rappers and hip hop musicians who prey on the girls there because they are young and pretty and Southern Baptist. They take them on their yachts, on international vacations and set them up at all the “in” clubs in Houston and Dallas. A child I’ve known as one of my own fell into this trap. She thinks he loves her, has met his child, and thinks he is divorced from his wife. He got her as a freshman. Her parents are devastated. They were paying tuition thinking she was in school, only to find out 2 years later what was going on. They spoke to her every day and are not absentee parents. Heartbreaking, but they will be here for her when she figures it out and help her pick up the pieces.

And these are a lot of kids who are extremely smart and did not drink in high school because of conduct codes in their elite private college prep schools. I have gone to funerals of some, including a nephew who all died of alcohol poisoning because they had zero tolerance built up. The culture IS focused on drinking and football and hazing is alive and well. I apologize again, it’s late and it’s bringing it all back just thinking about it.

        So. Many. Horror. Stories.

It’s just not the same. Several of my family members went there in the good old days and it was a great school in even the not so distant past. I just think it was a combination of corrupt administration, corrupt football program and clearly lots of other factors. I pray that they can change it to it’s previous glory, but these collective downfalls won’t change overnight. I know that they are trying to make the changes so that is encouraging.

        ALLEGEDLY

Obviously this particular post hit major nerves and all the comments on how great it is just lit the fuse for me to let it all out. I’ll stfu now.

@lola, apologize for my dissertation showing up as a reply. It should have been a stand alone comment. Once I started, it just kept going and I didn’t realize it was placed as a reply until after it was submitted.

Keto is great. It has been around for about one hundred years as a tool for patients with epilepsy and now it is being found to be beneficial not only for weight loss, but also for conditions like Lupus(which Brianna has), MS, Fibromyalgia, Type II diabetes, etc. because of the anti-inflammatory properties. Personally, for me, on top of weight loss, I sleep better, have more energy, less achy (I have arthritis in my back because of an extra vertebrae) and have less brain fog. Even when I reach my goal weight, I will stay with it because I just feel better.

Located in small town Waco in Texas and it’s really not that far from Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Rich in history and lots of festival. Up and coming area for young graduates and doctors and lawyers. Chip and Jo on Fixer Up lives and film there. She will fit in at Baylor and enjoy her undergrad years there.

Fellow thinkers, I believe In, have faith and you can often hear me asking Him why in the •••• isn’t he helping me fix whatever has me working overtime outside.

Religion, organized — however it’s members have become self isolating and superior in attitudes, I blame for much of our nations problems today, not all problems on these organizations. Especially in the south. .
Not all of our fellow Americans believe and that is their right. That doesn’t equal being a bad person, often the kindest intelligent, educated I’ve met. I would die to defend their rights to not believe, to have an abortion and marry whoever they love. That is the American dream and hope, equality for all.
Most Christians, not all, want to force their beliefs on all Americans by making their religious beliefs law.
That is simply wrong. Why should people be forced to obey a religious law. Don’t you dare say God/bible, we are a country based on “separation of church and state“.
I’d be disappointed if my son’s chose a religious based school, one was offered a scholarship to St.?Mary’s. Yes I would had supported his chose.

I can’t speak for Baylor but none of the colleges my son has spoken too. Applications aren’t open to juniors or my kid would be applying now. I have a junior. We are doing college visits and no school has said he can apply now. I wonder if it’s a summer program that is open to junior and seniors.

Wait, why does everyone here keep saying Baylor is a good school? It’s a trash diploma mill – it’s not even a tier 1 school and it’s literally in the bottom half of tier 2.

USC is a good school, Penn is a great school, but Baylor? It’s trash and you’re better off going to a vocational school.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the religious aspect – that’s how you really know it’s filth.

@ Truth Teller, Your nic is awesome for your comment. THANK YOU! I’ve been rambling incessantly on this thread and all the “Baylor is a great school” was making me feel like I was in the Twilight Zone. It WAS a good school, at least it HAD a good reputation like a million years ago. I appreciate your comment. It’s not a good school anymore and it’s reputation has been shit for a while now. I feel better now that there’s at least one person who agrees with me! Lol And it’s much safer for a boy than a girl. Please sit in the corner with me on the island of real world reality. They have plenty of money to send her to any actual good school where she can thrive. How do so many smart commenters not know this? IDGI.

I have also heard nothing but terrible things about Baylor for a while now. If really does help to be familiar with the rank hypocrisy of the Southern Baptists when researching an institution like Baylor. And Southern Baptists with a lot of money are the very definition of the old saying “money talks and bullshit walks”. Unless Miss Sophie has some great uncle who served on the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention for 45years while his wife was choir director AND ran the Lottie Moon Christmas fund raiser every year at their church then she really needs to re-think Baylor. I hope I am proven wrong because the Beador girls really do seem sort of sweet.

@LaLaFly, your comment is so on point. Aside from all the sexual assault scandals that are STILL happening, and the administrative problems, the student body is in my eyes going to be difficult for her. They are so cliquey! I hope I’m proven wrong too. But, in the current climate, I hope that she re-thinks her decision also.
The Baylor girls are sweet, but they have mostly been raised in this culture, know how to play the game and know the players (and their parents do for certain). Many are there for their MRS. degree instead of a Bachelors. I would compare it to an extension of high school since they mostly have grown up together in the same groups. And in the Greek system, they are the opposite of sweet to pledges. As in ruthless and demoralizing.
One of the victims now suing is actually from Cali. The “outsiders” seem to have the more difficult time assimilating and being accepted socially. Trust that the students will know all about her parents (and her dad’s unfortunate recent IG pics)! Yes, there’s a conduct code but it’s enforced rarely and it depends on who’s kid. I totally understand Sophie wanting to get away, but I fear she’ll be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Yes, they have the money, but from what it seems, no deep rooted connections which will be a problem. I really wish I was wrong and that she could have a great experience there but it’s highly unlikely. I’m from Houston and some of my family are generations of the Waco/Baylor area. My own daughters didn’t even want to apply there and they have a lot of friends there. It’s just that bad.

I do appreciate your input and comments on this. I’ve felt like I’m on an island trying to inform the reality of this post. It breaks my heart because Sophie seems like such a good kid and I don’t want her to become a victim of this culture so far away from everything and everyone she knows.

Okay, I must stop rambling on this thread! I get a visceral reaction. Lol!

Lottie Moon. Flashbacks to childhood. Is that still a thing?

@IJC: I also appreciate your more in depth info about Baylor and I got chills reading it because I was a dirt poor Southern Baptist growing up and there’s not even compassion for “one of your own” if there’s no $$$ in the household. I faced their cruelty even as a small child. Outright greed and flaunting your prestige has taken the place of passive-aggressive comments designed to cut like a knife. That’s about the only difference between now and 50 years ago.
The old joke about Saint Peter walking a newbie through heaven and telling the newb to be quiet when they go by the door to the Southern Baptist’s area because they think they’re the only ones there is a perfect description for their mindset. I want to thank-you for going into so much depth in presenting a solid case as to why the Beador girl shouldn’t go to Baylor.
@TT: yup! Lottie Moon is still a thing. LOL At least the church looked pretty with Christmas decorations when they squeezed money out of you for Lottie Moon! Ahhhh…memories! Is 1pm sitting by yourself at home and okay time to start getting likkered up? Asking for a friend…lol

The early acceptance thing in junior year has at least been a thing since the 2012-2113 school year. I only know that from personal experience with one of my kids. I can’t speak for the prior years because my memory is shit. But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the first year of it being a thing then, because I do at least remember it being normal protocol. So hopefully that gives somewhat of a timeframe for when it became a thing.

It’s a normal thing for kids who take AP classes… they take PSAT, SAT, and ACT pretty early. (Mine started taking SAT in seventh grade with hi school students at accredited testing site, but just as a baseline— I think it’s a program that is through Duke?) Anyway, they study for the SAT/ACT sophomore year, take the test that counts summer between sophomore and junior year. (they do all their college applications and essays really early and have to start their community service hours in middle school) and they know by spring of junior year where they’re going because the acceptance letters start coming fall semester of junior year. (If they were to bomb the SAT/ACT this also allows time for re-takes because admitting schools count only the highest score.) Some kids are really competitive and just keep re-taking incessantly to raise their scores. (Those kids have to also pay for each retake and they usually don’t improve enough to justify the cost. But it does give a safety net for those who flat out bomb it due to test anxiety, illness, etc) It’s gotten so competitive it’s ridiculous. But it’s not super new. It actually allows them to breathe and enjoy their senior year IMO, assuming they do well the first time. But if they bombed, it gives those students a chance to redo and apply senior year so they can get a fair shake.

God Im glad I’m done with that part. I was a legit hot mess trying to keep up with each kid’s stuff and stay on them for deadlines for each place. It was mind numbing! (Clearly still a hot mess lol)

My son is a junior. He’s was done with testing prior to sophomore year. They now recommend college testing during or after Algebra 2. The Duke thing is a way to identify kids to take their gifted classes. I don’t know of any colleges that truly accept anyone that hasn’t completed the junior year. Many don’t have the application open for anyone that’s not graduating in 2020. If it’s true, it is on a “conditional” basis as junior year grades are a significant factor for rigor and GPA. Even recruited athletes that say they are going to a specific college can have the offer rescinded if nothing was signed official.

I can only speak from my own experience with my own kids. They were early accepted (the last two) and already picked their housing. The colleges also sent T-shirts with “first to be accepted class of 20??) on them as juniors. My older kids didn’t have the option until senior year. But they all had extremely good GPAs and had been in AP classes since middle school. Mine are older than yours so they may have changed back to the old system. (That Might very well be the case as I do think that Sophie Beador is a senior now) But my youngest is a sophomore in college. I suppose they could’ve pulled their acceptance if they had lowered their grades in their senior year but it didn’t happen to them (thank goodness!) They also had the advantage of an awesome college advisor in high school, which helped immensely and pointed them to which academic scholarships to apply for. I couldn’t have figured it all out by myself! I remember that advisor saying that each kid ends up where they are supposed to be in the end so try not to stress about it too much. In hindsight, she was so right!

I wish the best of luck to you and your son! It’s a highly stressful process and extremely time consuming! If there’s a good college advisor at your sons school, befriend them immediately! Lol?

Already on it. His and the head counselor already know me. I ask a lot of questions and attend every post grad lecture. Lol. He isn’t too stressed, I can’t say the same for hubby and I as the cost for his current 1st and 2nd choices are astronomical.
