Open Forum: It’s Farmer’s Market Saturday!

October 5, 2019 by tamaratattles 92 Comments

And guess who made it to the market today? This girl! I bought two tomatoes, the first ones this year. It’s end of season here, and they don’t look great. However, the mission was not really about the tomatoes. The mission was to get out into this pretty day if only for a few minutes.  After weeks on end of highs in the very high 90s or low 100s, It was 78 degrees this morning at the farmer’s market. I wanted to get a walk, any outside walk in. So mission accomplished. I also bought two baby cukes an open face ham, cheese and jalapeno sandwich. The jalapeno part was probably a bad idea.

In other news, my anxiety and depression has abated greatly. That’s the good news. The not so good news is had some sort of 24-48 hour stomach virus. That seems much better today as well.

I struggled at the farmer’s market when I had to use a parking deck, pay for my purchases and walk. The entire walk was probably only 15 minutes and I struggled to walk.  Not because I was tired in the beginning and I’ve been very lightheaded and unsteady on my feet the past few days.

Anyway, It seems as though I am going to survive. Don’t expect many posts this weekend. I’m still not right in the head. My thinker ain’t quite right yet. It doesn’t seem like I missed much during my mental breakdown thus far.

Two things stick out. Golnesa G from Shahs is pregnant again. She’s been using IVF and a sperm donor. She was pregnant in the spring of this year and things didn’t end well. Hopefully, this time will give her a beautiful baby. I’m trying to imagine GG as someone’s mom though. 🙂

Golnesa enjoying the Mayan Ruins in Belize

The other thing is that some sites are reporting that Joe Giudice is going to be allowed to fly over to Italy and eat gelato while his final deportation appeal winds it’s was through the system. It is highly unlikely that will happen. The judge just approved the motion to be sent to the same panel of judges who are trying to deport him. If he were smart, he’d just drop is final appeal and go live life in Italy. Ciao, Joe!

Anyway, I’m going to try to eat something and get some rest. Thanks so much for all of the kind words of support. I’m sorry I could not answer them all, but they were very much appreciated. Sorry for worrying everyone and posting about negative stuff.

Now, I’d love hear some positivity. Is anyone doing anything fun this weekend?

Yes, it does. There are days when you feel as though you can barely get off the sofa, but once you force yourself outside it’s amazing how much better you feel. Glad you’re feeling a little more motivated, Tamara. I love your honesty because we all relate to you in one way or another. Hope your weather cools down soon, it’s so hard to do anything when it’s really hot outside. Luckily, our summer days on the central coast of California are usually in the mid-70s, so the occasional 80s and 90s just about kill us. I really have respect for you guys who have to make it through hot and humid summers. You’re a tough breed!

Sweet Pea, I’m glad you got out to the farmer’s market! I think you’ve got a little virus working it’s way through your system. You should feel much better in a few days. My only advice would be to schedule yourself a short jaunt outside the house every day, weather permitting. Preferably into some sort of nature. I’m a big believer in get-up-and-get-moving. Shower and clean clothes, too.

I hope the weather is feeling more autumn-like soon. I love fall, and I’m usually feeling contented in the fall. I’m taking my nine-year-old twins shopping for Halloween costumes! Pray for me! (I’ll be praying for you. 😉 ). Sending big hugs.

Thanks for putting me to shame, TT. I felt good about doing my weekly grocery run at Trader Joe’s this morning and trying some new items from the frozen section. But hey, I’m still happy I found some good wines on sale inside. (Think Napa-Carneros Chardonnay for $6!)

I hope you keep feeling better. As someone else who’s struggled with “the dark place”, I get it. These past two months have been especially rough, but a TT tomato update always seems to help in turning the frown upside down.

I am going to my 50th HS reunion today. Tomorrow, there is a brunch at our old school and I am breaking keto for a cheese zombie. Most of my clothes are deep in storage, but I have a dress that fits and a never-worn jacket from the thrift store that WOULD be perfect, but … too small. ONLY IT FITS NOW! Keto (and a mega dose of thyroid meds) have worked for my depression and I LOST SOME INCHES TOO! The website for our reunion has photos in the In Memoriam section, so I hope there will be no surprises this year. Lots of people have died in the last two years and this will give us a chance to honor them. Best of all … two friends I haven’t seen in 50 years are coming, YAY!

atdleft, I had a HS reunion this year and couldn’t bring myself to go. I’ve never gone to one. I don’t have the fondest memories of high school, always had feelings of not “fitting in” back then, but not a big deal overall.

Nanette, what is a cheese zombie? That sounds interesting!

A cheese zombie is a yeast roll with melted cheese in the middle. It was American cheese back then but I hope they use cheddar now. Either way, I am eating one. Or two. I used to get one at brunch every day, then use my lunch money to buy an album every week. Only $2.50 back then!

Harlan, do not miss the opportunity of your reunion next time. Most of us were uncomfortable some or all of high school, but at this age it doesn’t make a whit of difference come reunion time. You are what we anthropologist call “age mates,” & those are significant life-long relationships. (If you think not, just remember that your memories are still triggering deep emotions.) Lots of your classmates have exactly the same feelings as you, so you buy your ticket, go with a smile on your face, read the name tags of everyone else, greet them happily whether or not your really do remember them because they are also afraid no one will remember them, & make them feel good about coming. All those happy cheerleaders will be there, those who are still alive & not grieving the recent loss of a child or still in chemo for breast cancer, & even if they don’t remember you, they will also be nice & pretend they do recall you sat next to them in study hall. Any old distances dissolve with the years & the experiences, both good & horried, that the years have brought each of you. Friendships are not only renewed, but made. Today I am extremely close with classmates, in fact in nearly daily contact via Facebook, some with folks I didn’t know well in high school merely because we connected well via one or more reunions. Try it–it’s just one night.

The reunion committtee usually tries to reach EVERYONE, even us weirdos. The more time that passes, the harder they try, because more are dead. I was PAINFULLY shy in HS. Now, I look back at the missed opportunities to have known more about people I saw five days a week for 3.5 years. Better late than never. Skipped the 5 year. My 10 year was the revenge body/face of a very late bloomer. Skipped 30 due to moving. The 40th was good, but my pain put a damper on it. Now … I am grateful to be able to get around without 120mg of Oxy and 40mg of Norco a day. Just to walk. No alcohol either. I will REMEMBER all of this one. And ZERO FUCKS about my looks. Just happy not to be in pain.

Nanette, congrats of the dress fit! In prep for my 50th, months ahead, I hung a gorgeous too-small dress on a closet door as inspiration, & a few days prior to packing for the trip to the West Coast I tried it on just to be sure. It was w-a-y too big, so I had to scramble for something else to pack, but I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. Enjoy your evening! My 60th, probably the last reunion, is next year, so Fly Boy & I are both going. We’d take a train compartment just for fun, but you can’t do that cross-country anymore, since Katrina wiped out the Southern line. Infrastructure, anyone?

Nanette, your high school reunion sounds like a lot of fun, although we didn’t have much socializing at my school and I doubt anyone would remember me LOL.I wonder if you’ll recognize everyone after all these years?

When I went to school, centuries ago in Dickensian England, we didn’t have any graduation ceremonies, and I think reunions may have come along later. Not sure. The only thing we did was to throw our school berets out of the train window on the way home from school on the last day. Yes, we went to school on a steam train. We had to be in full uniform, including our berets, from the minute we went out of our front doors early in the morning and keep them on in public until we returned home at night. If you didn’t, a prefect would give you detention. What a bunch of pretentious little snitches they were! The school acted as though being made a prefect was an honot, but all it really meant was that everyone would avoid you. I have a terrible time convincing my grandkids that I didn’t grow up in Little House on the Prairie, but it was the 1960s in England and things were starting to get a lot more modern. Except at my school!

By the time you read this, it will be Sunday, so please fill us in on how everything went. Hope you had a wonderful time.

Hi English Rose. You have been missed. When I was in HS, we didn’t have uniforms, but we had to wear dresses to school. And no trainers, either. Tromping off to school in the rain in heels, minidresses and nylons, no bueno.

The reunion was fun. The main people I wanted to see who were still alive were there. It is so weird to have guys tell me they had a crush on me when I thought I was hideous in HS. Our badges had our senior photos. Mine would fit right in with Ted Bundy’s victims. It is odd being the only sober personat a table. The brunch was great, the arts are FLOURISHING at my alma mater. The cheese zombies tasted just as good as back then, now chased with Peet’s coffee. A big Trump supporter had been oddly silent on FB. I thought he was hiding out after the whistleblowing thing. Found out he died while on the heart transplant list. We were not friends and not political allies, but no one should die waiting on a list.

My cousin’s wife is the mayor of our town (same name as me). Today is an annual parade in which she marched. For the second year in a row, she turned two cartwheels while wearing heels. She’s about to turn 60. Meanwhile, I finally weighed myself and discovered that I gained back 33 of the 47 pounds I lost, in a period of just 6 months. As you can imagine, I’m not feeling at all happy about that. But I sure am back on plan!

Raining and 54 here in Chi town. Those cheese things remind of cheese sticks. I could eat an entire bag of those things…. The cats kept me up all night so I’ve been in a daze all day but who cares cuz it’s raining. I’ve been staring at my closet thinking I have to do the “clothes switch” from summer to winter (no fall here in Chi town) but then I shut the door and go back to my knitting. Last night some idiots decided to go up to the roof of this building (63 floors) at 11:30 p.m. hooting and hollering and they were all drunk. We live on 60 and 61 in this building and nobody is supposed to go to the roof, but the elevators stop at 61 so they went up that way. Apparently someone on 40 had a party and they drunkenly thought it would be a good idea to go stand on the roof…. morons. Hubbie is a bit nauseous from his meds so I had to go to Walgreens for a script and let me tell you, what a sorry sight in there. They woke me up. TT, glad to hear you are doing better!

OK, here’s some weird good news for this week. Back in 2012 I got a free or extremely cheap deal for a short term membership on Ancestry.com, so I have a dormant account. Periodically I get notices, enticements to re-up, which I ignore, though I had recently thought I might temporarily join this year when there is a Black Friday deal so I can add info that a genealogist friend dug up for me so I can leave as much info as possible for family in case someone is ever interested. So a few days ago I got two different emails from them with photographic “hints” about my tree. They were all scans from a small Swedish-titled book with entries in my grandmother’s handwriting, which I recognized immediately. Some of the entries were about family members; e.g., her infant sister being born & dying on the same day in 1895 & my uncle getting scarlet fever & other childhood diseases in the 19tens. It turns out a woman in Arizona bought this tiny Swedish bible on eBay a year ago & has made it her mission to return it to the family ever since. It is currently on its way to me. My younger daughter will scan it to make it available to the entire family. When I called my elder daughter in Texas to tell her about it she told me she had an 1800’s photo from my grandmother of a man a chef’s outfit in Sweden standing next to an extremely tall wedding cake that had to be for a royal wedding. It might be my great-great grandfather, so we will try to trace the cake via royal Swedish weddings online. It is of interest to daughter because she happens to be a State Blue Ribbon cake decorator. I published a mystery in the 80’s (no TT, you can’t find it; I used a pen name), & once worked on one as an anthropologist in real life so this is right up my alley. Anyway, we are very grateful to a lovely persistent lady in AZ who finally solved her mystery & is now sort of part our family.

Hello! What a beautiful day! Yes, it has been in the high 90’s for the last 3 weeks! Ugh, so today it was 68…all day! It was cloudy and breezy. We went to a Fall Festival and it was amazing. Bought some Christmas gifts from a local who makes beautiful jewelry. Kids had ice cream (I know, cold) but they will eat that at any temperature. Bought some peach jam. Super fun. We are new to the south east so it’s been really fun checking out all the festive things to do around here. Now if the leaves on the trees could change colors that would be perfect.

      Thanks for the update TT.
It was 34 degrees at my lake cabin in PA yesterday am (not winterized, no heat). That is cold!!!

I made spicy sausage and rice cakes from the Momofuku cookbook. Recipe called for TWO cups of dried red chilies, but I cut it to one. Very spicy, but delicious. Had the original in NYC last weekend, and mine was not the same color. I think the chef left out one of the “ingrediences.” Or I messed up at the Asian market.

I’m now that old person who turns on a stove for heat.

I’m so glad you are digging out – I always say I am digging out of my depressive attacks. I have prayed for you and thought of you. A year after my mom passed, today is that anniversary, ?, I got up today and cleaned the hole, where I’ve spent most of my time…my bedroom. I love it but it was so awful. Dust, and magazines, and books, and papers…and tons of crochet thread for when moments of creativity might strike…they never did. So I am now lying on my heating pad, in my clean room, with my dog Baxter at my side. So cheers to you dear one, onward and upward.

I suffered severe abuse as a child; as I learn more how that affects one, I realize I probably have PTSD….but right now I Sm on an upswing.. so I am thankful for these moments.

Holly, PTSD is real, but know that you can have more than one thing wrong at the same time, & that it is important to eliminate the physical because that is often the easiest if you can attain the correct diagnosis. The caveat here is that the most accurate diagnosis, in my experience, is provided by an aware/educated/persistent patient.

Holly, so sorry that you suffered abuse. As a child, I would be annoyed that kids were always in my house. I now realize that my mom was taking care of more kids than her own. Wish everyone could have good memories of their childhood.

Yay for the out-and-about. It can be a real struggle, but you did it.
I am no doctor, but many people I know (as well as myself) have bouts of terrors/anxiety/depression when they have gut issues. I think it goes hand-in-hand. Just be very kind and restful to yourself.
We are finishing a long week trip to New Mexico. Where everyone has been so kind I have been crying daily. Just so touched by the decent people. I was in a restaurant today and near me were 2 people who were uncle and niece. She started a political thing and uncle gently said “not here and not at my table “. Then he changed the subject.
But, see, some parts of our country are just like that! All over NM I am talking to utter strangers who say “maybe we can all get along”. It’s warming.
So my weekend is driving, and thinking that maybe we can all get along.
Hugs to you TT, and all the rest of the posters.

Well, tt, I just wanted you to know that your ‘tomato talk’ over the years inspired me to grow some this year. I grew some San Marzano’s for sauce (one batch done so far) and another variety called ‘tie die’ which are a.m.a.z.i.n.g – I’ve been eating tomato sammies galore and giving lots away which feels great on both accounts!! So thank you very much for the convo over the years – it took me a while to join in but I did!!

Honestly, back when I was still planting, I would try unusual varietals. Mostly, heirlooms though. It’s cool to have a variety of colors they look pretty in a nice cobalt blue bowl. But when it comes to eating and making sauce I like a big fat red one.

So glad to hear from you! Love that you made it out to a Farmers Market; I love me a good Farmers Market trip! And I LOVE me some good tomatoes!

I also ventured out for the first time in over a week. I managed to drive myself to our local shopping area and just did a tiny little bit of marketing. Bought some odds and ends for the house, then made it to a Chinese restaurant for their lunch special which I wrapped up for dinner. Then made it over to a little Greek place I’ve been dying to try. Bought THEIR lunch special as well, and it was delicious! So pleased and proud of myself for getting outside.

Alas, I paid for it when I got home. My foot was pounding and throbbing and too sore to even handle being iced. But at least I had replenished my supplies, and I didn’t have to worry about dinner.

I’m going to lay low for the rest of the weekend now.

    Love to Banjo!

P.S. Remember that nut job on Twitter who said Kath Dennis was hiding in her closet? Have you been watching her tweets? She’s been outright insulting to soooo many people online…including Andy Cohen. She’s also coming hard for anyone she feels is attacking Trump. (??). You might want to take a look.

TT…. so glad you got to the Farmer’s mkt! Ours closed at the end of Sept. makes zero sense as we are still 85plus here in NW TN. Those markets always make me feel good. we did cool off a bit and I got inspired to make baby lima beans and cornbread (not quite soup weather yet). Paris is a bucket list dream of mine. I have read all Julia Child’s books and another one called “The sharper your knife the less you cry” about a women who sells all her shit and attends Le Cordon Bleu….I also love “A moveable Feast” about Paris. as you say…”Le Sigh”….

All my tomato plants have died and didn’t do that well anyway. I’m going to my grandson’s 1st Birthday party later today (a week early but his parents work the next weekend) . His two sister’s (half I really don’t like that word) live with me and have most of their lives. They are 12 & 11 both have ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, and the youngest got diagnosed with bipolar with manic at the beginning of summer. I’ve not been posting much lately but life has been hectic and depressing at the same time. Hopefully today will be a bright spot.
TT I’m happy to hear you got out to the Farmers Market. Glad you a feeling a bit better. Hope you enjoyed your ham sandwich. Coming to your site and reading posts & everyone comments brings laughter & humor to the end of many long days. I hope you continue to take of yourself . I’ve been here since the beginning and as long as you are willing to post anything I will be here reading & sometimes commenting. Hugs&Kisses ?

I’m struggling to add positivity. I do always enjoy these open forums and reading what others are doing! It’s still a HOT girl summer here- and I don’t mean that in the fun sexy way. IT IS HOT AF IN OCTOBER HERE!

As far as gardening goes, I must give TT credit for getting me interested in it years ago. Over time I’ve learned a thing or two and I don’t totally suck at it anymore. My challenge is that I’m now relegated to potted plants since I sold the land. I added succulents a few years ago and they are usually low maintenance and I enjoy looking at them when having coffee in the morning. Not enough room for tomatoes but I got a Meyer lemon tree a few years ago. And I love my big tall dracena and hydrangeas. My very favorite to admire was my giant prickly pear! So, although I had a human funeral yesterday, this morning turned into a funeral for the prickly pear. The extreme heat combined with the torrential rains of Imelda and constant humidity did it in. I tried everything to salvage it but it was apparent it was DOA this morning. So my morning consisted of breaking it down and having to carry several loads of it down to the dumpster which covered me in spines and totally Pissed me off. The hydrangeas died months ago. But, I am so pleased to announce that my lemon tree started bearing fruit in early summer, and it is thriving along with my agaves! It looks like I’ll have yellow lemons in the next couple of months!

So, I’ll be able to make the proverbial lemonade by maybe Thanksgiving or Christmas?

    Small victories, y’all.

I shall now stay inside with air conditioning in my pjs until “on becoming a god in Central Florida “ and Succession come on tonight and order delivery for dinner.

Congrats to all of you who got out in the world this weekend! And to those of you who are experiencing true fall, I AM SOFA KING JEALOUS! Lol! xoxo

I doing even better today. Still having stomach issues but the cough that makes me gag has stopped. Feeling mentally stronger and managed to eat today. I swear I am the fattest person in the world that struggles to eat. I Drink a lot unless I am on the really good foot diet plan. Not just beer and wine but sweet tea and Mexican Co-Cola and Gatorade and V-8 and copious amounts of Kombucha (that’s actually low cal). and soup. Lots of soup no matter how hot it is. In fact I plan to have soup for dinner. I think getting something in my tummy is helping.

So today, I started to do something productive (I was highly motivated to do so for a reason we will get to later). So I washed all my dishes, That took almost an hour. And I went through my fridge and cleaned it out as if I was preparing to move. I have a tendency to save random things in case I need them. Now my fridge looks like a bachelor pad with two completely empty shelves and three completely empty drawers.

Part of this comment was turned into a post. So be more incoherent that usual. I’m worn slap out.

So glad you are feeling a little better!

We walked six miles yesterday, went to the Picasso Museum, and ate cheese, wine, and bread for dinner. We are struggling to be tourists (we can’t stop wandering around and stopping at cafes in the 11th where we are staying) so we hopped on the HOHO bus to see the sites.

Sleeping in every day and drinking all the champagne.

If I could only eat at one place in Paris it would be L’as du Fallafel at 34 Rue des Rosiers, 75004.

It’s a gyro place. For as long as I have been going there the gyros have been 5 euros. Surely by now they have gone up! It’s great hangover food! You can drop me anywhere in Paris and I can find this place from memory. The line will be VERY LONG no matter where you go. There is seating but I’ve never done that. The line moves quickly and it is one of my favorite arrondisements in Paris,

The thing is, you will then need to take your gyro and try to find Place des Vosges for a bench to eat your gyro (and/or) falafel.

Here is a site about that beautiful square. http://www.parismarais.com/en/discover-the-marais/the-marais-neighborhoods/place-des-vosges.html

The fourth arrondisement is called Marais and it began as the Jewish area, but the gays moved in a some point and so did quite a few Arabs and they all live together in harmony. Imagine that. I see that as a sign of hope that we can all get along. And we need this example. Especially now. The Jewish schools now even have some Muslim students and faculty!

To be honest, there is no wrong place to go in Paris. I personally don’t go to the area around the Moulin Rouge after dark. But I’m traveling alone.

Have fun! Wish I was there with you!

I went to water today and Stripe and/or his roof rat party pack wreaked havoc in my vegetable garden. I netted it to keep the chickens out, but neighbors have Ivy and a palm tree — roof rat condos. Two more tomatoes gone, all of the beans uprooted, the melon leaves broken, budding squashes gone. Little fucker is going to get zapped as soon as I get 4 C batteries for my electric rat trap.

    Hi Tamara,
So sorry you’ve been dealing with some heavy things going on in your life. The good news is that there are much better days ahead. Living with anxiety, depression and OCD is no joke. It can be very isolating and cruel. I watched my sister in law struggling for years before she got help. And when she did her bright light started to shine again. Please know that you’re very fortunate to have an outlet in writing to give the anxiety a place to go. I’ve even been struggling myself with chronic pain for years. It causes me to turn off and hide. If I do that it wins, so I fight with it, and yes, even talk to it. I find singing helps me deal with it too. It give the anxiety a place to go. You asked if anyone had anything going on this weekend, well yes sorta. We got a new furry family member last week, so we’ll be pretty busy playing with him and loving him. I hope for the best and know that better days are coming. Banjo lives you and that my friend is a blessing of unconditional Love and support. Be well, Tamara and be blessed. ?
