Survivor 39 Recap: A Lesson In Fire Building

September 26, 2019 by tamaratattles 76 Comments

By Guest Correspondent Cho

Hey, it’s Cho and I’m definitely drinking carbenet sauvignon and raspberry white claws for this 90-minute premiere of SURVIVOR. Please be patient with me. What do you drink during Survivor? If you haven’t read my thoughts on the cast of Survivor: Island of Idols, go do that now please! Right off the bat, how the mentor twist will work is explained: Sandra & Rob won’t be able to win the million dollars; they won’t have votes; and they will be tasked with counseling others throughout the season on how to win the game. Jeff’s botoxed face is looking really handsome tonight. He’s literally goals. Let’s get to this Survivor 39 recap!

Getting To Know The Lairo Tribe

Missy Byrd lets us know that she developed a brain tumor that caused her to not be able to walk. She is on Survivor to recoup and prove herself. The first alliance is already being built with the NHL captain, Tom Laidlaw, pulling in Vince & Elaine. He says that they all think alike so they make a great fit. The other 7 tribe members take this opportunity to brand them as an easy target for the first vote. Missy lets Elaine Stott know that her group of 3 are already being targeted, but Missy’s goal is to keep the girls together.

It’s only Day 2, and the poker player is already targeting Elaine for being a Day 39 threat. Can you say overplaying? In a confessional, Ronnie Bardah says that Elaine has to go due to her having a good storyline. In person, he is blowing smoke up her ass. Sigh I want him off the island despite him being a hottie. Elaine rightfully calls him a scumbag that she can’t trust.

Touchy Feelings on the Vokai Tribe

Janet Carbin aka “Super Mom” is already trying to prove herself to not be a weak link by showing the value she can bring to her tribe. She goes on to build a fire and says that it doesn’t matter what your identity is if you’re able to provide for others. She’s going out of her way to prove herself as an older woman, and I love it. The #ChoHatesOldPeople is officially cancelled!

Tommy Sheehan is already running game on everyone with his strong skills just like I predicted. Despite a lack of footage evidence, the tribe seems to have branded Jason Linden as an idol-searcher. Noura tells him that the others are already unfairly targeting him which is a shock to him. It’s literally been 30 minutes, and I feel bad that Jason is being targeted despite simply looking for items for the shelter. In the game of Survivor, anything can and will get you targeted by others!

Dan Spilo is giving everyone massages and making people feel uncomfortable. Both Kellee and Molly are spreading a negative narrative about Dan’s physicality. The women confront him about it. Dan appreciates the conversation from Kellee Kim who tells us that his lack of spatial awareness will cost him in the game. Foreshadowing of some sort?! Considering that Dan was the one knowingly spreading misinformation about Dan, I can’t say I’m sympathetic over him being the center of controversy.

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Nothing special about the immunity challenge. Even the idols look basic. I’m really just looking at this challenge to see who the eye candy of the season will be. It’s obviously Jack Nichting with the curly hair! Janet continues to prove that old women can succeed on Survivor by extending the lead for her Vokai tribe in the physical portion. #ChoHatesOldPeople. The Vokai tribe has all the hotties; change my mind! We get to the puzzle and Vokai DOMINATES all the way to victory!

After announcing victory for Vokai, Jeff Probst lets Lairo know that someone will randomly be chosen to to go island of the idols. Elizabeth Beisel is chosen, but will attend tribal council. She freaks out knowing that this will probably put a target on her back, because she’s away during the pivotal strategy sessions pre-tribal council. I’m nervous for her,  but I’m sure she’ll be given some overpowered advantage to help her make it through.

Island of the Idols

Elizabeth arrives trying to remain optimistic for what awaits her. She ends up seeing the MASSIVE statues of Sandra Diaz-Twine and Boston Rob. Such a ridiculous sight to see! HAHA When they both come out to see her, she bursts into excitement. I literally would be so star struck. Sandra is one of my favorite players. They make it explicitly clear that they are NOT there to win the game. They are there to serve as mentors of a sort of “Survivor Boot Camp”.

Rob and Sandra interrogate Elizabeth on her game thus far. Rob gives her an extensive lesson on how to build a fire.  I’m already really impressed by this twist. Rob ends up successfully making a fire for Elizabeth in a matter of minutes. Sandra takes over and gives her some more practice in fire-making. Eventually, Elizabeth is able to build a fire, and this is so satisfying to watch as a viewer!! Let’s hope this isn’t like Ghost Island where the twist slowly fades away in interest over time.

Elizabeth Beisel is then offered an opportunity to win an immunity idol if she’s able to complete a challenge against Boston Rob to make fire. But, she loses her vote if she loses against him… the competitor in her decides to compete against him despite her odds. Rob reveals that he would have offered her another opportunity had she simply pressed for it. Sandra coaches Elizabeth during the competition against Rob, but he soundly defeats her. Rob schools her that if the deal is too good to be true, don’t take it. He basically calls her stupid for going against him after learning how to make fire only 10 minutes ago. He’s not wrong.

The Underdogs Are Targeted

Elaine is worried about Tribal Council, but she’s hoping her relationships will remain strong. Her, Tom, Vince and Chelsea target Ronnie, but he is definitely targeting Elaine at the start. Elaine is already in tears during a confessional, because her gut told her that she would be targeted first. Then, Elaine walks in on Ronnie & Aaron shit-talking her. Aaron explains to her that she is a target because she’s such a wonderful person. She takes the compliment, but explains that she is loyal and will go for whoever she needs to in order to survive. Aaron Meredith tells her to vote out Vince at tribal council.

Elizabeth gets back from the island of the idols and tells everyone the most extravagantly unbelievably lie ever: she tells them that basically nothing happened. We gloss over that ridiculous lie, because everyone is too busy trying to get Elizabeth’s vote on their side. The gag is that home girl doesn’t even HAVE a vote, because she took a stupid risk. Now, she’s lying to everyone about where her loyalties lie when she can’t even actually support any cause. This is hilarious. Cut to commercial break where Julie Chen is looking FANTASTIC!

Tribal Council

I always imitate the tribalistic noises that they make during tribal council scenes. Don’t tell me I’m the only one. Is this technically cultural appropriation? I’m not hip to these new pseudo scientific terms! I’m nervous for Elaine & Vince, but I’m hoping Ronnie makes a swift exit. Rob & Sandra happen to be secretly hidden in attendance at tribal council. Elaine comes right out with her feeling of insecurity because of her immediate likability. Then, Elaine Stott says what everyone at home is thinking: why is everyone targeting her on day 1 for a strategy that should be employed much later in the game. It makes no sense!

Right as it starts to rain, Elaine starts to break down about her journey on to Survivor and how it could potentially be over. Jeff Probst asks if Ronnie can relate to Elaine’s story. Ronnie lists literally 20 jobs that he’s had in his life. Cringeworthy editing here. Vince Moua also cries about his emotional journey. Told ya! Sandra likes him. It’s time to vote. He reads them: Vince, Ronnie, Vince, Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie and Ronnie is voted out 8 to 2. Thank goodness! The alpha dogs are already in danger!

So, what did you all think of the premiere? What were your thoughts on Sandra & Rob being a part of this season as mentors? What about Ronnie being evicted? Who are your favorites? Thank you all for listening to me complain in the previous post! Check that out if you want to know why I had the WORST SUMMER EVER! If you like what I do here on the site, be sure to support me in my other ventures elsewhere on the internet!

Woohoo new season & Recaps by Cho!
I am so happy that the poker player dude who was voted off first. It’s going to be interesting to see how Sandra and Rob will be mentoring this cast of survivors. I love that they are hidden in a little treehouse and able to watch Tribal Council. I don’t have any favorites yet but I do like the old lady / mom Eileen and Vince far but it may change later on during the season. Cho I have been waiting since last night for you to get this blog up?♥️ love ya

I’m also really happy that he was sent packing. I was hoping he wouldn’t end up being the stereotypical aggressive poker player, but here we are I guess! I also love Jan. I think she will become a fan favorite!

Thank you as always for your immense support on this site and to me personally! I appreciate it.

Great recap!! I thought this episode was excellent! I like Elaine and the Hmong guy the best so far, and I thought the mentor part was cool especially that Elizabeth learned how to make fire. I’m so glad Ronnie was the one voted off first. Usually I feel really bad for the first one to go.

          Me three.

#1. If you have EVER watched Survivor (I haven’t since 2006!) you know there is always a fire challenge. Practice at home. With and without matches.

#2. If you KNOW you are going to be in any outdoor situation, you should know how to start a fire. You should know how anyway, Zombie Apocalypse and all …

#3. If you want to be a valuable member of a tribe and not a leech, you should be able to take your turn at fire duty.

I thought the first episode was fantastic through and through. It would be great if every episode was 90 minutes, but that would be pushing it for a lot of people I assume? I just felt like I got a better chance at getting to know the characters! I don’t feel bad for Ronnie whatsoever. He deserved that blindside.

I was 100% confident that she would be the first boot, but I’m glad I was wrong. I’m pulling for her already. I think she handled the heat super well. The previews show Aaron, Ronnie’s ally, letting his true douchebag come out!

I haven’t watched Survivor in years. That being said i only came back for Rob and Sandra. I thought it wasn’t too smart for Elizabeth to lie. I feel once they find out they are not going to trust her anymore and vote her out. If she needed to lie come up with a better lie.

It wasn’t smart at all. And because she ACTUALLY didn’t get anything useful, she should have been 100% honest about her trial. And just imagine if the vote was actually closer?! Her lack of having a vote would have caused such drama.

Sandra and Rob are ICONS! Obviously, bringing them back has brought back some old school watchers. Enjoy the ride! <3

YAY! Survivor is back, and so is Cho. Your recap was hilarious!!! I thought this was a great episode – a lot of different people got to show some personality – usually, the first episode is so overwhelming that very few people stand out. Even though I hated Ronnie’s strategy, I was kind of bummed to see him go. Would have rather had someone anonymous go. So happy that Elaine was saved, although they were right that she is a threat. She sticks around longer and she’s going to be a fan favorite.

Omg Hey Kyle! Thank you for taking the time to comment. It really means a lot to me that you like engaging here in the community!

I also agree that the episode was through and through a huge success! Elaine is definitely going to be a threat down the line, but I don’t see much reason to employ a Day 30 strategy on Day 1. It truly is getting ahead of yourself and losing sight on the present!

I read a lot of the recaps on this site and rarely comment. But there’s just something about Survivor that seems to foster community. I’m looking forward to watching this season with everyone 🙂

I liked watching Sandra and Rob play, but I haven’t decided yet how I feel about this twist. Watching all the fire making was a little dull, and I agree with everyone about that being a skill every contestant should know you need to show up with. Now that Sandra & Rob are watching the tribal councils I hope they share strategy advice, that would be interesting.

I have my fingers crossed that the women’s alliance sticks together!

Yeah I’m waiting with bated breath to see how this twist unfolds. I feel like they usually have great ideas for season themed twists, but they eventually drop the ball. Hopefully they can rely on Sandra and Rob being entertaining in and of themselves to carry the twist through the entire season.

I’m so happy you feel welcome in the comment section here! That’s my goal. I want people to engage with each other and share ideas. Keep coming back. It makes me happy! <3

Thank you Cho for the recap!

I hope Elizabeth goes next. She’s already done in my book for taking that offer right away and failing. I think Rob and Sandra must think she’s an idiot too.

I like Elaine too. I also liked Janet jumping in and taking over. I would need someone like her if I was on an island b’c I would be dead from lack of fire! It could make her a target though? Idk.

I think the girls are right about the touchy, feely, Dan, that would annoy me as well. People need their space, especially, sweaty, irritated people. He seems nice enough though and respected their boundaries.

I like the cast so far. No Instagram Models or Influencers, so it’s terrific!

I normally don’t watch Survivor, but it amazes me how these people adapt on an island. They all seem to be doing fine. How? Stupid question. I know.

I think there are better people to go before Elizabeth. If I found myself on an island with Boston Rob and Sandra, I think I probably won’t be thinking straight. She made a dumb choice. I’m not ready to throw her to the wolves yet. Dan makes me uncomfortable, though.

Yeah, I never really watch this show, so I will make mistakes with my comments. Do the girls really stick to an all girl alliance? I have no patience. I would still want her gone. She made two mistakes. But the cast doesn’t know this. Dan was creepy, but he backed off, for now. Let’s see.

I really like Rob and Sandra. I might go back and watch when they were on. I guess I can google it. Sandra won twice, impressive.

I agree. Elizabeth was really foolish in how fast she took the deal. The skill acquisition of building fire was enough of a value to leave with. But I also understand the excitement and nerves she probably had. She was just a bit too eager. I get it. I’d rather other people leave before her though!

In terms of why they’re doing fine. I have no idea, because I would be a FISH OUT OF WATER! lol

I’m glad Dan was able to take the constructive criticism well. I think he’ll make for a great character. He has a bit of villain in him!

TT is correct. Seasons 1 and 2 were amazing. It was real survival game play, not just playing the game. It is always tough and dangerous every season, but the early seasons were true pioneers in every way. However, you have to go a little further to find Boston Rob and Sandra; worth it if you are able to. Actually, if you watch Rob, start with his first season not his winning one.

One of my best memories from season one wasn’t even on Survivor. It was on BB season 1. I think they allowed a houseguest to attend the Emmy’s as a prize. Survivor has just started airing before they entered the house, so they didn’t experience the public’s obsession with the game. The houseguest got to meet several survivor contestants and totally fangirled. He told the rest of the houseguests that Survivor had become as popular as they had predicted in house. It was a introspective look into pop culture from outsiders who were also insiders.

          Also, thanks Cho!! Good recap.

TT is right. Try your hardest not to read spoilers. I also wouldn’t suggest the season that Rob won. It was DOMINANT. Impressive game playing for sure, but there were a lot of idiots that let him steam roll him.

But start with seasons 1 and 2. Then skip ahead to seasons 7 Pearl Islands & the original All Stars season 8. Skip to season 15 China. That will give you a bit of CLASSIC Survivor.

Then it becomes a bit more modern with these newer seasons: 18 Tocantins, Heroes vs Villains (EPIC Season 20), 25, 26 and 28 with 28 being pretty fucking epic too. So much HILARIOUS drama in that one.

After that chunk, things become very twist heavy and sort of more dramatic than usual. More emphasis is put on season-long twists which can sometimes lead to difficulty in editing. Here are the ones I’d recommend: 31, 34, 36, and 37.

        Then you’re caught up. <3

Huge Survivor fan here – have watched since season 1. Also a fan of BB but the difference is Survivor has evolved in terms of game play in the past 20 years – BB, not so much. I don’t think you need to watch every season, see below for recommendations:

Season 1 – intro to game and Richard Hatch
Season 2- Australia – really see how hard this game is
Season 4 – into to Boston Rob
Season 7 – intro to Sandra
Season 8 – Rob and Amber
    Season 13 – OZZY
Season 16 – Micronesia (made my son watch with me to see how smart and persuasive women can be)
    Season 19 – Russell Hantz
Season 22 – only to follow the Rob story
Season 25 – if you watched Facts of Life and Season 2 (Australia)
Season 27 – new twist with Blood vs Water
Season 33 – game play on steroids – Millennials vs Gen X

After investing in these seasons you will be ready for NEXT season which is returning winners. Can’t wait!

Cho- Great recap! I like the hidden lessons the survivors are learning from Rob and Sandra. I think as long as the lessons remain simple yet significant I’m in. Kinda reminds me of Mr. Miagi and Daniel from Karate Kid. Ronnie made a decision that may have been correct if the tribes had already merged. I think the survivors should try to keep their tribe strong and unified. I like Jack and Jamal from Vokai. During the Challenge they both were great team players. I think Jamal is going to get sexier as time goes on. I also like Janet. She showed her strength in the challenge and value with making fire. If she can balance her worth without becoming a threat I think she will do well.

I’ve got my eye on Jamal too. I can always depend on you to be checking out the hot bodies. No wonder you’re one of my faves here.

I’m also invested in seeing how this twist really unfolds week to week.

Cho- we must have the same taste in men. My 3 celeb crushes LL Cool J, Shemar Moore & Justin Hartley, from This Is Us. I would marry LL’s character on NCIS Los Angeles, Sam Hanna in a heartbeat. Shemar Moore would be my single girl booty call and I first saw Justin on The Young & The Restless. That’s where I first noticed Shemar. And yours?

ok gonna be honest: because I don’t watch TV, movies or music videos, I honestly don’t have any celeb crushes. The only “tv” I consume is Survivor, anime and I keep up with the real housewives here but I don’t really watch anything other than the bravo clips online.

That being said, I know exactly who Shemar Moore is, because I grew up watching him on the soaps and OMFG he is HOT!

Okay so I was a Survivor fan and BB fan. My kids were more BB fans so I watched BB with them and feeds. It consumed our summers lol. I watched Survivor from the beginning and through season 25. That’s when I stopped. I stopped watching BB the past two years bc I was fed up with production interference and it just didn’t seem like actual game play anymore. I was planning on starting Survivor back next season bc I imagined it would be epic. I have way too many shows this fall!

But Cho, dude your recaps are pulling me in. I ❤️ Boston Rob! (Although my all-time fave is probably OZZY) And I’m seriously considering jumping back in sooner than planned. Even if I drop all housewives I still have a pretty full DVR for fall. So basically I’m just trying to decide what other shows I can drop to fit in Survivor because of Cho. And once I start I will be a regular commenter here if y’all will have me. Sometimes the best part is having a community to discuss it with! So, thanks Cho! You’re doing an amazing job!

IJC, I wish I’d have gotten in on the ground floor with both of these shows. I did watch Celebrity BB last season because, hello? TT and Kandi but I really didn’t understand much even with gentle guidance here…me still confused! I now just read along and enjoy because the recaps and comments are just too swell!

IJC- the best thing about TT is everyone is welcome as long as we respect the commenting rules. I agree with you, Ozzy is one of my favorites along with Malcolm. I have seen every season of Survivor since season 1 so it will be great to hear your comments.

The rules are a complete no brainers if your brain fires in the general area of TT’s, even opposite views can and are completely accepted, she’s created an environment to allow for open dialogue in a safe place, we all bring differing as well as similar perspectives. If someone wants to change her rules and can’t seem to grasp that this is her site that person just needs to recognize this site is not their happy place, move along or be sent away on purpose. You will be just fine, dandy and happy here, promise!

Those giant statues are THE MOST RIDICULOUS piece of aesthetic Survivor has EVER introduced!!! LOL

I bet they go for a lot of money. I mean, Sandra and Rob are big time Survivor idols with huge fanbases. The queen stays queen. I bet they’re secretly competing with each other all season long. I love them.

I was much more impressed with Janet making fire from bamboo than Rob making fire with magnesium and flint. Just saying…. #girlpower. Mature women are powerful beings. Do not underestimate their life experience. I hope she prevails for many episodes. I am liking the NHL dude too. Guess I am fangirling on the oldsters.

The fire building lesson was sort of ridiculous. Here is some flint, a knife and perfectly dry tinder…

Oh yeah Laila. Despite this show having been on for like decades, people still go on without knowing how to make fire. So it’s always impressive when people do it on the show. lol

I know Rob taught her to make fire but my take away was that the lesson learned was if a deal looks to good to be true, it probably is and don’t jump at the first offer. Rob mentioned to the viewers that she never asked if there was any other offers. I think there will always be a mental lesson in the obvious lesson. I don’t know, maybe I’m just mesmerized by Rob.

I love Rob and agree with you assertion. That was the biggest takeaway. She should have simply said no, that’s too risky and explained her rationale for having not taken the deal. Then maybe he would have offered her something else in order to make the visit interesting from an entertainment POV. You just know the producers wanted her make an entertaining choice somehow!

I’m looking forward to seeing more of their lessons. I wonder if they will reveal that they’ve been to Tribal Council. I still have questions…!

Just added Survivor 39 to the menu (black box at top of each post) for easy access.

Also pull a couple of photos tonight and one was of Jamal he seem like a force to be reckoned with, athlete, Ivy league degree… I have my eye on him and also I think it was Elizabeth who is the olympic swimmer. And the Indian girl, I forgot her name Kashmira or something like that, the ambulance chaser with the beautiful hair? She’s a contender. We should have done a pick your favorite sort of thing. I still haven’t read all the bios.

              CHO,
trying not to be alarmist but several of us are concerned about TT. Has been radio silence for a couple days. Do you have a way to contact her? If so can you please check on her. Don’t want to pry but living alone, banjo… I just know it’s around the time for your recap and perhaps you have a way to make sure she’s ok?

Better late than never. Phone the neighbors and wake the kids because I FINALLY made it through the premiere! Initial thoughts:

Hot Dayum, Boston Rob has aged well and Ambuh is a lucky woman. Love Elaine. Gave me faith in humanity to watch them vote that dbag off. Oozed weasel through the TV.

Those busts did look like CGI and barely resembled them.

I have lost all respect for the chenbot. It’s one thing for her to stand by her pervy rich man like Tammy Wynette said. Gross. But, she introduced herself as Julie Chen MOONVES in the BB Finale teaser. WHY ADD IT NOW?

I’m totally in now. Trying to catch up!!!
