The real news on the Thomas Ravenel bullshit.
Here is what my source told me. Dawn doesn’t have much money for attorneys. She was largely unrepresented in the criminal matter against TR, and while she’s not pleased with the outcome, she’s certainly isn’t surprised. The prosecutors were theoretically supposed to be in her corner, but they had a curious shift several weeks ago and began to strongly encourage the plea deal. Dawn ultimately agreed not to oppose the deal, with the single caveat that TR would admit to the facts underlying her allegations. (Hence, his so-called apology for trying to kiss her and grabbing her arm in the process… It’s not a full admission, but it’s certainly a major departure from his original position that he’d be attracted to someone like her.)
The prosecutors also allegedly considered certain factors that could weaken the case against TR, including, most notably, the proposed testimony of an opportunistic c*nt (hereafter, “OC”), who gained her entry into reality-TV gossip circles by outing TR for allegedly sexually assaulting her own mother, yet was curiously willing to suddenly testify in favor of her mother’s alleged abuser against Dawn.
OC claimed that Dawn’s accounts of the attack to her differed significantly from the allegations in the police report against TR, because she never described a “rape” when recounting the details of the attack. There’s a very good reason why Dawn wouldn’t describe TR’s attack as a typical “rape,” which is that the SC Criminal Code defines second-degree rape as forcible penetration with any object, including fingers, and many people wouldn’t consider his actions [which, if true, were certainly a sexual assault] as “rape.”
Regardless, It’s clearly the role of the prosecutor – and not Dawn – to determine what charges to levy against a defendant. It’s not as if Dawn browses through menu of criminal charges and ordered which ones and wanted the State of South Carolina to charge TR with.
Nevertheless, OC allegedly desperately needed to save her own ass after she inadvertently exposed her mother to civil liability when she outed Thomas, so she agreed to testify in favor of TR. While there was plenty of evidence establishing that Dawn’s recollection of the attack to OC was entirely consistent with the allegations in the police report, it was clear that TR had succeeded not only in muddying the waters, but was going to extraordinary lengths to do so (including by allegedly hiring a 24/7 PI to monitor his victim’s every move).
As a result, the individuals who were meant to protect Dawn ultimately cowered to external pressures generated by the TR money/propaganda machine, and she had little choice but to agree. It’s a damn shame, but certainly not a surprise.
Dawn settled her case with TR. According to the terms of the settlement, he has agreed to donate $80,000 to the organization People Against Rape (PAR), a nonprofit organization for sexual assault survivors, in her name. She doesn’t want, or receive, a penny of the settlement amount.
And on that note. I’m going to throw up now. I’m shattered. And I can’t imagine how Dawn feels.
