Weekend Open Forum: Whatcha Doin?

August 2, 2019 by tamaratattles 119 Comments

I just watched 60 Days In NARCOLAND that airs on A & E on Tuesday nights at 10 pm. That time doesn’t fit my schedule. In fact it didn’t even tape until someone kindly emails to remind me about the show. I saw or read about the show and it didn’t sound interesting to me. I like the other 60 Days In seasons, but this one just seemed odd. At first I didn’t realize that they were still putting people in the jails. They are. On the first episode one male and one female returned to Clark County Jail. The jail they used in season one and two. How the hell can they do a third season there?

Then there are people living in another county in a trailer park with a high number of methheads and meth and heroin and pot dealers. This seemed kinda dumb to me. I have to tell you that the first episode was RIVETING. I am always online when watching TV and often have to rewind whatever I’m “watching” because I am not paying attention. This show had my full attention from start to finish. I probably won’t recap due to the fact I’m kind of overloaded. But I thought I would share for those interested. And again, thanks to the person who reminded me it was on.

I’ll get to MDLNY soon. I planned to do it today but I am spending time with Banjo and trying to address our flea problem. I think it is under control now. He has had more baths in the last two days than he has in his entire life. But he is to’ up from the flo’ up. All of his sensitive areas are really red. I’m trying to decide whether it’s too soon to give him his monthly flea pill. I put the date on the box because I have no memory at all of anything anymore. It looks like him MAY pill was a couple weeks late. But everything else was timely.

Anyway. Tell me something good. My crazy is bad and I know it will pass soon, but I’d like to hear good things, good shows, good meals, good drinkings, bountiful gardens, cute kids, loving relationships and whatever else good you all have going on.

Well, I’m working this weekend. I’m actually checking in from one of my assignments right now. I was quite nervous going into today, but I’m feeling better now that it’s happening. When I get frustrated and/or anxious about my line of work, I sometimes have to remember to pinch myself that I’m following my passion.

I can’t wait to check in here when RHOC returns next week. Hang in there, TT. We’re here for you!

So when I was writing this after watching 60 Days In, my TV reverted back to PopTV since I was watching that last night. Sister Act is on and even though I am watching from the middle/endish I am sucked back in. I’d forgotten what a good movie this is. I need more Whoopi in my life. 🙂

My grandson we’ve had since January is thriving! He has made so much progress. His preK teacher said he was like a different child when he graduated than when he began. His speech teacher is amazed at how well he is doing now. We read every day and we’ve bought workbooks we work out of about 45 minutes a day. In fact, I may have to make things a little more challenging for him. Needless to say, I am very proud!

Tamara, in between drinks by the pool, are you watching Black Spot on Netflix? It’s dubbed pretty well * , set in the most gorgeous part of France, and Twin Peaks weird. It keeps me rowing and walking uphill.

The Masshole zoo has enjoyed a weekend of swimming in the pool. After the zoolings went to bed I started to catch up on the best smut author of my youth: VC Andrews. Lifetime has gifted us with the “Heaven” movie series. As expected it’s awesomely bad. I should be asleep but instead I’m on to “Dark Angel”. Can’t stop won’t stop ? I hope you’re feeling better my love. Kisses to Banjo ❤️❤️

My best friend came to my house in CT from Philly for six days to visit. Today we drove down to the shore, sat on the porch of a hotel overlooking the water and ate lunch. We then sat on the beach and watched children playing in the water, and took a detour on the way home to drive by all the beautiful old houses. It was a wonderful afternoon.

Hmm, something good. Going to see the Tarantino film tomorrow since it’s supposed to rain. Lost 25 lbs so want to go shopping in my attic. Headed to a concert in a park on Sunday featuring music from the 60’s. That one is dear to my heart for a lot of reasons.
That’ll do it. Haven’t watched much tv lately. Not sure why. When we were kids, mom always shooed us outside in the summer. We had to stay out till lunch, and head back out till the streetlights came on. If we were thirsty, we had to drink from the hose. So maybe I feel guilty if I spend too much time in the house! ?
    Take care, TT.

There is a flea pill you can buy at pet stores that within 24 hours kills all fleas and eggs. I buy it when I miss my dogs monthly pill and he catches fleas. It kills everything for a 24 hour period, then you return to the monthly dose.

        LOL!

TT, I am going for art supplies and also separately shopping for a metal tub for the cats. Poor sentence structure on my part.

I love dogs and cats. But Hubby and I no longer have the get up and go to take care of a dog. So it’s cats only now. My cats are cool and act more like dogs. We have a Florida room where most of my cats hang out. They have a pet door so they can come inside if they want but for some reason they like laying stretched out all over the Florida room. I told my husband it looks like the Hee Haw porch out there except with cats instead of hounds!

The metal tub for cat swimming is almost for sure not going to work although I do have one Maine coon cat and they sometimes like water. Meh. I can always use a metal tub for something down the road.

It’s not good news. It would take you around 20 hours and two flights to get to NZ (Atlanta, Chicago, Auckland). I went to LA a few years ago and that was a 15 hour flight. I take phenergan and travel sickness tablets then sleep. I’m not a good flyer, I picture my grizzly death every time we have turbulence.

NZ is beautiful though. Akaroa, on the South Island is where I dream of when I want to run away from home.

WTF would I need to go to Chicago? There are direct flights from ATL I think. What I don’t know is what is near to you and I am too lazy to look at a map. There has to be something within seven hours. RIGHT? What is the closest land mass to you? I could google but I’m drunk and apparently watching Sister Act 2 for the first time.

I said I’ll try my hand at gumbo with Carolina gold rice. Next night we’ll have fresh pasta with seared scallops and shrimpz. I also want to make biscuits because she’s bringing fig jam she made from some of the neighbors tree she picked and clotted cream she got at Wegmans… think we’re going to try grilled banana and marshmallow sundaes. Oy, I need to start running again… maybe next week. 🙂 love you TT, enjoy the weekend.

Sunday my husband and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. We’ve actually been together for 13 years but, we waited to get married. We’re going out to dinner. It’s so strange how so much time can pass and on one hand it feels like a long time and on the other it feels like things that happened years ago just happened a few months ago. Our pup has been having flea problems too. We just learned that the best thing to bathe him with is good old fashioned dish soap. Like Palmolive or the like. Fleas hate it for whatever reason and it didn’t bother his itchy gnawed at spots.

Caramel cream ice cream with gooey caramel throughout poured in a crushed chocolate cookie or graham cracker crust and topped with chocolate chunks, pecans and whipped cream.

So good and I’m so paying for it lol

I have dialysis Saturday after noon and then will go see Hobbes and Shaw. I know it looks terrible, but I feel compelled to watch anything with Dwayne Johnson. Hell, I even saw Baywatch. Afterwards, I hope my date and I go back to his place as my lady parts are developing cobwebs.

I am overrun with tomatoes so at some point this weekend I’ll be canning them and making tomato sauce. If I remember I’ll take a pic of m tomato plants. I had 71 plants come up from seed and all of them lived after we planted them in the garden so, yeah, I’ll be pretty damn busy LOL

Have you watched Years and Years on HBO? It’s a 6-episode miniseries following a family through a dystopian near-future. It begins with Emma Thompson running for prime minister of Great Britain as a populist candidate who descends into totalitarianism. It is scary because it is so real – and tragic.

Yesterday went to gym and was trained by my personal trainer who happens to be my daughter! I figure I preloaded my session costs by Pauling for her college! Haha. The worked from home until 1:30, then packed a cooler and went to the neighborhood pool that sits next to the river. My daughter joined me and we feasted on chips & guacamole, shrimp cocktail & Vietnamese spring rolls w peanut sauce. Yum. Best part? There was only 8 people there….it was like our own private staycation!
Caught up on some episodes of Handmaid’s Tale last night. This morning hit the farmers market to buy from Brazilian baker some awesome empanadas, organic farmer’s cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, peaches, & some locally made pickles. Planning to make caprese salad and shrimp ceviche later.
Hope you are having yourself a lovely weekend with Banjo!

My son is in town and the hubs and I are taking him over to Siesta Key Beach to spend the weekend with his parents ( I gave him up for adoption at 18, we reconnected ten years ago).

Still trying to figure out accommodations for Paris early October. This exchange rate is fucking with my plans to be cheap. I’m already packed, but nowhere to stay.

Happy summer is winding down, happy football is starting back.

TT have you looked into CBD oil for Banjo? Did I ask you this? It’s doing wonders for my senior cat. Pretty much eliminated his asthma.

Sitting with my laptop at the kitchen table with Fly Boy. We just finished real fruit popsicles (peach for me & Raspberry for him). Fly Boy is watching a Shark Week movie where people are acting stupid in the presence of sharks, but he just leaned over to ask me if he’d already told me he loves me. Now he is back to his running commentary on all the mistakes the actors are making. Fly Boy got his Master’s Ticket at a young age, & has taught thousands of people to dive, so he knows when folks are doing it wrong. Thinks he likes it better when they make make stupid mistakes (like having the wounded girl hang onto the dinghy from the water instead of from inside). I did a shark dive a few years ago & got a nose bleed, but didn’t notice it until I got out of the water. We are thinking about getting another boat to keep in Florida, but much is keeping us busy at home (like the flood in the master bath last week). My custom pantry has been started, which is the beginning of a full-blown kitchen re-do, & the new 5-burner gas stove was installed this week. The 5th burner is one of those big oval things, so I bought an oval spaghetti pot (on sale, of course) so I won’t have to break up the pasta anymore. It also does a pot roast fine.

Just released from a week in hospital. Severe sepsis and pneumonia. All good now. Slow recovery but I have time. My blessing is my loving family. My sister, my big brother and my little brother wrapped me in a cocoon of love and their strength and loved guided me through. I left my home state for Cali when I was 18. Lived there for 35 years, basically alone with no family. Moved back to my home state 6 years ago and life is blissfully glorious being surrounded by people who love me for the first time in my life. . Cant get any better than that.

Forgot to post my good news–great-granddaughter has mostly decided to spend another year at university getting a master’s degree. With summer school & pre-college credits she was able to complete her freshman & sophomore years in one calendar year, so even though she only graduated from high school last year, she is already a junior. She has scholarships for 4 years, so she’s thinking she might as well stay the course & come out with an advanced degree instead of giving up her 4th year of financial aid. I’d mentioned the possibility of doing that just once in passing, but didn’t push it, & thankfully she has about come to her own conclusion that this is her best plan. I give her extra props because there is a serious boyfriend waiting at home, & that has to be a temptation for someone 19-1/2. She’s really mature, though, as the eldest of four. She’s already decided to accept a job on campus this year as an assistant to her former advisor instead of a different one that would pay more. She realizes the contacts/networking will be worth it. She’s handled her money well, so can get by on less. Me, I’m really excited for her & her future (& a little bit wishing I’d be as wise at that age).

Me, too, Nanette, & I still enjoy. Thanks for the good suggestion, but great-granddaughter has already done one Study Abroad program (Sweden & Norway) just this spring, but had to pay out-of-pocket for it. She went back to the foundation giving her major support, but they did not sponsor that, & surprisingly, did not help with the summer school classes that let her jump her sophomore year. She’s recently been exploring internships, with the notion of that being a path to a permanent job. Working hard the past couple of weeks, in addition to her summer job, on a rental house held in trust for her education & that of the other 4 great-granddaughters. An ex-tenant left the place in a mess & I am laid up with a broken foot, so she & her boyfriend have pitched in & done a splendid job rehabbing, including him repairing the HVAC & her laying a new bathroom floor. She pulled a Tom Sawyer & got a younger sister to help with the painting. I’ve been blessed with this generation, which sort of makes up for the H-E-double-Heck their grandmother gave us during her teen years.

Nanette, at this age (or perhaps any) “finding true love” is not a matter of happenstance. Mostly it’s a matter of having to look first, pretty hard. My motivation was an 8 year-old great-granddaughter who looked at me one day & said, “Grandma, I want a substitute grandpa.”

“I’ll try to believe all of it.” This sounds…mean. But I TOTALLY get it. When depression/anxiety takes over for long periods of time, it’s like it seems unfathomable that others are going to the beach or doing happy, fun things. It doesn’t seem possible. But we want to TRY to believe it is happening and that the world is not so dark for everyone. Sorry, I’m not trying to bring down the happy thread we all need. It just seems hard to fathom at times.

Agree, totally. Lived/cruised on a sailboat for several years. The farther out to sea, the happier I am. When my grandson, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, was very young he would sit in the dinghy (attached to the boat) for hours & just enjoy being there. When he was 9 we took him through the Panama Canal & on to cruise the San Blas Islands, & the entire month he was with us he was a totally normal boat kid, no sign of his autism. Even at our age, Fly Boy & I are still planning our next boat.

We tend to be our worst critics (except for the clueless narcissists on some reality shows). Through your posts, we see your beautiful heart; likely “Eric” does too. THAT, to me is mature love at its best. MizGrandma and Flyboy are not in their 20s, but see the beauty in each other. And that is what it’s all about.

I’ve had to deal with a bad flea year with a couple of cats. I would have to do the flea bath and would get one myself too, as anyone who has bathed a cat knows. The best part was the rub down with the towel and snuggling afterwards.

Gardening has long been my best therapy. Overnight, my newer Pink Berkeley Tie Die tomato has caught up to the Chocolate and Yellow brandywines. It looked like I might lose the brandywines while I was working to prepare the soil (lots of Bermuda grass and hard, unamended soil, plus allergy problems). The alpha hen did her best to have her way, but I foiled her with netting. Even the two “summer set,” heat resistant Purple Cherokee and Black Prince tomatoes are catching up. I have been babying the peas and hardening off the squash and melons. The season started late, so I hope it will be good long enough harvest. Plus, another heatwave is inevitable. Sacramento has gardening challenges I didn’t face in my perfect pocket in the SF Bay Area. But gardening is a good teacher, especially about patience, tenacity, and faith, things I need.
