Memorial Day Weekend Binge Watching

May 26, 2019 by tamaratattles 72 Comments

It’s hot AF in the ATL today. Like we might have hit 100 degrees hot. So me and Banjo are staying inside under the air conditioning and binge watching a show on Starz called Vida.

I saw an ad for it on Bravo actually. I watched two half hour episodes then I got up jumped in the car and bought a bunch of beer and some wine. Then I stopped at the Mexican drive through. I ordered a bunch of random stuff. And read some of my book. El Veloz is not fast food. It’s slow food made by Mexicans. Anthony Bourdain ate at one when he was in Atlanta for his travel show. The thing is, you never get what you order. I think I might have this time. It seems I got fish tacos instead of shrimp ones. I have yet to get a shrimp taco. It doesn’t matter. Whatever you get is great.

There was some sort of heart dropping incident with my Amex. My bill was $23 dollars. Don’t judge, the chicken tacos are for Banjo. Plus this is two days of bingewatching and eating. The server told me that my card would only accept $20. So I had to pay $3 in cash. I also had a panic attack. I had to come home and check my AMEX account. Everything seemed fine but the tacos were not on there. There was a pending charge of three dollars, not twenty. It was some sort of kerfuffle on the taco stand end. I called AMEX and everything was fine with the card. But I’m still panicky.

So back to Vida. It’s about two estranged sisters who come back to East LA when their mother dies. The sisters are not close. One of the two hadn’t really spoken to her mom years. They both discover all sorts of secrets. The mom owned a building that has apartments and a bar.  Oh and everyone is Mexican.

You really are going to want Mexican food when you watch, so plan for that. Lots of Mexican food porn.

And a shit ton of actual porn. You will see every cast member completely nude at some point. I’m only three episodes in.  So if porn isn’t your thing, this show is not for you. Because the sex scenes are very real looking. And there are lots of them. The writing is amazing. Everyone has secrets and they are slowly coming out.

I’m going to go back to eating tacos and drinking beer with Banjo now. The site is pretty dead, so I’ll probably just do a discussion post for RHOP tonight. If that. It’s a holiday weekend. And I want to spend mine eating tacos with my dog. And watching porn.

What are you guys doing?

This is SORT OF an open forum. But please no bad news in comments. No death, no disease, no traumas of any kind. Be upbeat or be quiet. Thanks.

At least her husband made great potato salad.

And there is a small breeze.

My sister and I planted a garden last week. Everything is still alive one week later. The peppers (bell, jalapeño, and banana) are thriving…peppers of all kinds grow really well here for some reason.

I planted butternut squash and it’s looking sickly, but it was a first time experiment. Radishes and lettuce are sprouting already. Mint looks good. Tomatoes are fine so far, but they’re usually drama before the season’s over.

It’s unseasonably cold in Las Vegas, with our typical strong winds (25 mph right now). I took my dog for a 30 minute walk this morning, pulled never ending weeds from my front yard, did a little grocery shopping and I’m binge watching The Bold Type on Freeform before I take my fur baby for her 30 minute afternoon walk. It’s sort of a perfect day.

I’m not a lying in the sun kind of person – can’t handle the heat and look like a lobster if I’m not careful; however it does sound like a lovely, relaxing day.

Speaking of lobster, I would love to go back to New England and have a genuine lobster roll. They sound delicious. The closest I ever get to really indulging myself with seafood it’s when I go to Costco and buy two of their Dungeness crabs. I go straight home, lay newspaper on my dining room table, get out my little crab destruction tools and go to town.

Anyway, Marc, have a wonderful day, and enjoy every bite of that succulent lobster roll.

I thought I was all caught up on Killing Eve! It looks like I forgot to watch last week’s episode. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? I remember pulling photos. I guess I just forgot to watch! Argh. Maybe a double recap tomorrow.

Between the oppressive heat, the beer, and the bellyful of tacos. I’m fading fast. 🙂 Besides. I AM TAKING THE NIGHT OFF!

We have another 20 minutes of this fun and then we’re out of here for cocktails while watching Aladdin at Loews Theatre in the big cushy seats. Yippee!

Those same kids in the grocery store or Target? LIVING TERRORS.

Spent the day shooting amazing photos of the architecture in “Old Louisville”. Drove 120 miles home, thunderstorms all around…now Mia (my beagle mix I broke out of death row Friday) are watching unheard of Rom-coms on Tubi TV. Mia is munching on canine bacon treats (smells amazing). Me? I’m downing Dos Equis Ambers, scarfing down homemade jalapeno & cheese nachos, crying a bit (I miss the love of my life, she decided a year ago it wasn’t working). So me & Mia. A quite handsome Beagle mix, happy to have a new home, and I’m happy for her.

I’m crammed onto a twin bed with my 22-year-old daughter, because my air conditioner isn’t installed yet. I’m editing a novel for a guy who should NOT quit his day job. Right now I’m editing one page per every five minutes I watch of RHNY Season 6, which I have decided to grace with my binge-watching attention today. At this rate, the Countess is going to be in rehab again before I finish the editing job, and it’s due on Tuesday. But worth it, just to hear Sonja mutter to Ramona about the inequities of bedecking her 22-inch head with 28-inch hats.

I busted my rear yesterday and today getting all kinds of yard and house stuff done. I mowed, I trimmed limbs (yes, I know it’s the wrong time of year to do that, but they were whacking me in the head when I was mowing around them), I cleaned the house, I washed my car, I transplanted some potted plants that had outgrown their pots, and I did a massive Walmart shopping trip, which was as exhausting as all the rest combined.

The upshot is that I am going to completely veg out tomorrow, and I plan to enjoy every minute because there is NOTHING from my to-do list hanging over my head! Yay! I’m going to sleep late tomorrow, get up and have some junk food, then take a nap until it’s time to eat again. If I get really ambitious, I might watch something on TV.

It was hot AF here today too. One of those days where the mixture of heat and humidity means all you can do is lay around and tell yourself it’s too hot to do anything. I’d still rather have this than snow, though. I spent most of my day online shopping, and spent way too much money. Everything I bought was stuff I had been watching for a while, and it was all on sale. That makes it ok, right??? There are some really good sales this weekend.

It was too hot to cook, so I ordered takeout – and I did have to leave my air conditioning to go get that. I ordered shrimp tacos too, and actually got shrimp tacos – along with fried corn. Eventually it cooled off enough outside to go for a walk, so I went for a walk through my neighborhood. Now I am eating Oreos and getting ready to open a bottle of wine. What type of wine goes best with Oreos?

Tomorrow I will put my flag out on the porch, go to a cookout in the afternoon, and take a moment to remember what the day is for. And I don’t exactly mind the day off from work. Yay for Summer!

I was so anti boxed beer, but it is the wave of the future. Wine bottles will be something people collect 20 years from now. As is, “Wine used to come in bottles..” Black Box has won all sorts of awards.

Plus, it’s like having a pony keg of wine in the house. 🙂 Also it’s good chilled but you didn’t hear that from me. AND, if you half and half it with Hummm Mango and something kombucha, is practically a Sangria Health Drink! 🙂

Black Box is great. I’m not really a wine snob. I like Pinot Grigio, Rose and cheap Chilean Merlots. That said, viewed boxed wine as half a step from being a cat lady with half a dozen cats and a “cat tree.” Black box wins all the awards in blind judging. Plus it’s relatively cheap. The price does fluctuate in grocery stores. But you can usually get it for under $20. That’s four regular bottles of wine.

The Merlot is my favorite. The rose is is good but it’s a bit too drinkable for me. It goes down like water. I don’t recall if I ever tried their Pinot Grigio, I probably did. I make ghetto sangria with the merlot. It goes great with kombucha. You can take the girl out of the ghetto…but… 🙂

Oh I love good tacos so much! I made my favorite weekend breakfast today; scrambled eggs with tons of cheese and soy chorizo from trader joes (easy to throw in the eggs and nicely spicy), and I take corn tortillas and cook them in the waffle iron, which is always on the counter. I time it perfectly so the tortillas are hot and slightly crispy when the eggs are done. Best breakfast ever. If I wasnt so lazy I would add beans and tomatoes.
It was hot upstairs but not super hot, and we got a cooling thunderstorm.

I keep forgetting this is a holiday weekend. Between years of working restaurants and newspapers, then disabled/retired, I went from never having holidays to every day is a holiday, but not special.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to drive anywhere on the freeway. My garden is REALLY late, thanks to the weird NirCal weather this year. The last 10 days I’ve devoted to blending two groups of three chickens — all rescues.

Still on keto, eating Mexican salads and chicken thighs in cheeesy creamy pepper sauce. It will go perfectly with binging Vida. No cerveza ? Craving white peach Sangria.

I have been waiting for the tomato thread to report that the ultimate cheater tomato — never dug it up after last summer — has been making fruit all year. Finally getting bigger tomatoes now.

Please keep us updated on Banjo’s jalapeno “experience” – first time I have seriously laughed out loud all weekend and simultaneously felt bad for Banjo and his ring of fire. I needed that laugh, so, I am sorry, Banjo, that I laughed at your experience, but I bet that queso tasted really good too. Now, oddly, considering the topic, am hungry for Mexican food. My weekend has thus far been incredibly boring – laundry, running the dishwasher, grocery shopping, and for the big highlight, the battery went completely dead in my car BEFORE the grocery store run, it would not hold the charge after I jumped it, so my grocery run also included a trip to an auto store and spending $154 on a new car battery – happy Memorial Day weekend to me, I guess. I’m hoping to top off the evening continuing on with reading an excellent book I’ve recently started, then hopefully, since I also battle nightly insomnia, drifting peacefully off to sleep. Making homemade sloppy joes for Memorial Day, along with a homemade pasta salad, probably throw in some deviled eggs, and some chips – none of which I like nor will eat (don’t like meat, don’t like deviled eggs, don’t like mayo in this pasta salad recipe either) – mostly doing it because sloppy joes are my husband’s favorite meal (yes, total geek s quad guy-type), followed by watching what hopefully will be a Game 1 victory for the StL Blues in the Stanley Cup final series, to end this awful 49-year drought the Blues have had – and I don’t like hockey either, I’m a Cardinals baseball gal, but hey, ya gotta root for the home team having a 49-year drought, right? It’s not like I “bleed Blue”, as the hockey fans say here in The Lou, but bringing the Cup home would be sweet for this pardon the French sh*thole city. 😀 Just kidding, love The Lou (kinda/sorta). Everyone, have a wonderful Memorial Day and thank you to anyone who has served our military or who has had family who has served – yours or their service is so very much respected and appreciated! (I’m still hungry for Mexican food even after typing all this dribble too, dang it). Banjo, good luck in the backyard, if ya know what I mean – maybe Momma will give you an ice pack afterwards?

Just finished dying the front of my hair blue for tomorrow. Admin made us T-shirts last year for our Veterans (myself included) but there’s no blue on the shirt so thought I’d fix that.

According to the Navajo Times this week, we have lost all but 8 Navajo Code talkers. Please remember them in your thoughts tomorrow.

Binged “Dead to Me” off Netflix. Super fun suspenseful dramedy where every episode is a cliffhanger. Highly recommend it but don’t want to say too much about the plot to avoid spoiling anything

Dead to Me is excellent, I binged that the day it came out. Christina Appelgate is awesome and I love the writing.

I watched this movie on Prime called “Logan Lucky”…funny as hell. I don’t know how I missed it. Now I am re-watching the first season of Southern Charm and I can’t get over how much I missed the first go around and how much they have all changed. Wish I had a good Mexican place nearby. Black Box Merlot rocks and I also like it chilled in the summer.

Happy Memorial Day everyone! I’ve been deep cleaning all weekend. Gave tons away to Goodwill, clothes I’ve had since I was teenager, even. Lol

Hoping to get out for a walk later, but’s it’s currently in the low 40s and looks like rain, at least it isn’t snowing like last weekend.

I ran out of Vida before I ran out of Mexican food. 🙁 I hope season three comes soon. That was just a brilliant series. I do need people to stop making Eddy cry. I can’t take it. I love her.

Oh and the jalapenos didn’t seem to have any ill effect on Banjo. We are laying around the house eating tacos for a second day.

I can’t wait to watch Vida based on your recommendation! I remember people used to say the same thing about Shameless and sex scenes, but it’s still one of my favorite shows.

I’m glad Banjo is okay! I remember when my old lady got into a bag of spicy chips and ate them all…I was so afraid she was going to bloat, but she never so as batted an eye.

Oh this is straight up porn. Not sex scenes. Like full on porn. There is a full on orgy on one of the episodes. I don’t know if I just got used to it, but there didn’t seem to be quiet as much in episode two.

It’s hot AF here as well.. My husband had a heat stroke staying in the garden all day Friday.. Terrifying and now he has a summer cold where he is hacking up a lung.. I think I slept about 6-8 hour since 330am Friday… I looked at the weather on my phone 7:45 p.m. last night and it said it’s still 97..

This weekend I binged What/If on Netflix. Renée Zellweger is almost unrecognizable and plays the part to perfection.

Then I went on to Netflix’ The Society. I made it half way through episode four and had to stop. It’s Lord of the Flies meets Under the Dome, both of which I found boring as hell.

Now I’m on ep 6 of Chi on Showtime, I love the show and I’ve been waiting until now to watch so I would have a bunch to binge on.

Judging by TT and all the comments I might have to put Vida up next ???

Ok, I read earlier about us needing to check out Vida and I came back here to make sure the name. I was trying to watch the latest RHBH and for some reason I am getting annoyed by it, so I am going to cut it off and start Vida. I hope I’m not going to get hooked into binging, I have sh%t to do tomorrow. I have a feeling I will be struggling. ?

I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed taking a day or two of downtime with Banjo. I’ve loved the conversation here with you guys. Thanks for keeping it upbeat. I needed this so much.

I have TWO big stories I have been holding on to until everyone gets back. I’ll probably get to them tomorrow. One will be fairly easy to get out tomorrow. The other one, I am still waiting for a bit more information on. So stay tuned and click couple extra posts for me if you have time. It’s a ghost town on holiday weekends and scares the hell out of me. 🙂

We just finished “Living the Dream” a British comedy series. Interesting how the British “see” America.
Spouse and I cooked until both refrigerators were full. Made me so happy to have a bunch of meals ready for the freezer. Shrimp and grits, belgian waffles , sausage gravy, homemade ice cream. And homemade cracked ice; you whip cream and put chunks of jello into it. It’s goofy and festive.
The dogs got burgers for dinner. Our 13 year old dog, Ana, is perking up on a teaspoon of beef bone broth and kyolic (fermented garlic). Her nagging cough is better and she ran all over the forest today. The rescue poodle and our big Gingerdog keep an eye on Ana.
Ginger has 13 chicks to help care for and she is delighted. Having jobs has made her even more enjoyable.
Hoping Banjo feels ok soon. We just got over 3 poopin dogs a couple weeks back.
