Survivor Recap: Idol Or Bust

May 9, 2019 by tamaratattles 33 Comments

By Guest Correspondent Cho

Hey, it’s Cho! I can’t believe that we only have 2 episodes left of this season of SURVIVOR to recap! Will get the final twist of the Edge of Extinction soon? Will more idols be played? Let’s get straight to this week’s Survivor Recap!

On the Edge of Extinction, there’s a special delivery. Everyone receives a note that they wrote to themselves before they started the game. Everyone obviously cries discussing what they think their purpose is playing the game of Survivor. It’s actually a really touching scene seeing them all be so introspective! No good shots of Chris Underwood unfortunately. Reem finally realizes that she should be proud of herself and not be so bitter. Redemption!! I love Reem Daly and her journey in this season of Survivor!

Survivor Recap
Aurora reposted this photo on Twitter playfully mocking Devens for stealing her usual hands on hips stance.

Even More Advantages?!

Gavin Whitson is feeling really guilty after having blindsided Ron Clark in the last episode, so now all the eyes are on Devens to leave next. Rick lies to the others about getting his hidden immunity idol from the Edge of Extinction, which gives him a leg up on searching for the next idol. Remember, everyone thinks advantages only come from the edge. Aurora feels like there’s finally people she can trust in the game. Her alliance of Victoria, Gavin and Lauren decide that Rick Devens is obviously their biggest target.

Catch Up On Survivor Recaps Here!

Lauren McConnell figures out that Rick lied about his idol because she has an idol in her pocket! She actually confronts him on this, and he continues to lie. Breaking news! He ends up finding another idol! He really is working extra hard in this game. Why is no one keeping an eye on him at all times to prevent this from happening? Pure laziness. Rick Devens is winning me over this episode as he tears up about winning the game for his family.

Aurora Alone Again

I always love watching Survivors trip during challenges, and the reward challenge is no different. Gavin wins the challenge and chooses Victoria and Lauren to come with him which pisses Aurora off who was just beginning to think she was part of a group. She feels like she’s not good enough to be a part of a group. My heart breaks for Aurora McCreary in this instance. Even Rick and Julie feel bad for her as she tears up about not being chosen.

Catch Up On Survivor Recaps Here!

Gavin Whitson explains that Aurora should understand his decision and stick with his alliance, because the alternative is going with Rick Devens and losing in the end. They start thinking about second option if Rick wins immunity, and obviously, Julie is targeted. Lauren has second guesses about this, because she’s developed a strong bond with her. Victoria Baamonde reassures Aurora that she is secure with their Final 4 alliance. Aurora explains to us that moving forward with her alliance is the best logical choice for her even though emotionally, she’s upset.

Survivor RecapThe News Anchor Goes Rogue

Despite Rick Devens already having found his idol, he’s choosing to totally mess with the rest of his tribemates by pretend searching for the idol. The enemy alliance is following him around while he tries to lose their trace. Lauren describes him as playing Hide-And-Seek which is mentally exhausting. This alliance deserves to lose. Why didn’t they feel the need to watch him before it was too late?

I’m still here!

The immunity challenge will be a classic word puzzle which means Aurora McCreary may not do well. Transporting the puzzle pieces through the obstacle course is very tricky though! Some Survivors are trying to take too many puzzles while others are trying to take smaller stacks. Victoria reminds Jeff that she’s playing in the challenge. I hear you girl! She’s definitely under-edited this season!

Survivor Recap
Aurora hate a puzzle challenge!

Rick Devens wins the immunity challenge which all but guarantees him safety next round since he has the immunity idol too! He’s dominating the later half of the merge at this point! Remember when I said he wouldn’t last long? Well, I was right: he was voted off before the usual jury phase, but don’t let that change your perception of him! Can he be stopped now?!

Lauren Makes A Bold Move

After the immunity challenge, Julie Rosenberg gets to work on how to keep herself in the game. She approaches Lauren, because she has the best relationship with her. She makes the case that Aurora McCreary is better at firemaking and challenges. Lauren sees Julie as a goat to take to the end which increases her winning odds. She approaches Gavin Whitson and says that they don’t need Victoria’s vote to blindside Aurora, but Gavin is reticent. Gavin gives Victoria the heads up who is offended that Lauren would try to flip without her. This makes Victoria Baamonde want Julie out even more. I want her out too which means she probably stays!

This is a screen grab from a gif of Ron at tribal on the edge of his seat over Devens idol ploy.

Tribal Council begins, and I’m nervous about Rick Devens trying to blow things up already. Aurora speaks up that it’s obvious how big of a target Rick is. Everyone literally agrees that he’s the one who should go home due to his threat level. Aurora continues to let it be known that she respects his game a lot which is more pressure for her to fight against him. Rick then reveals his idol and the desire to play it on Julie which will force the alliance of 4 to turn on each other.

Catch Up On Survivor Recaps Here!

Devens calls Aurora McCreary out for being the 4th wheel. They go back and forth about whether this is just empty bravado or if Rick will really play a real idol on Julie. It’s time to vote. Rick decides NOT to play his idol onto Julie Rosenberg. Jeff reads: Aurora, Julie, Aurora, Aurora and Aurora is blindsided by her alliance. What a SAD end to her storyline this season!

Season Finale Next Week!

What did you all think of this episode? Did Gavin just make a really stupid decision considering now he likely be Rick’s next target? What changed Victoria’s mind about voting out Julie? What about Lauren’s plot to take Aurora out? She has an idol in her pocket, so she has some sense of security over the next few votes. Who do you want to win?! I am so sad this season is coming to an end. I thought Edge of Extinction was kind of fun. It was like the Ponderosa but with lots of suffering. It will be weird to have Joe or Chris back in the game next week though. Those are the two I want to um…see more of. But I don’t think they should win.

I think Devens or maybe Lauren needs to win.

I agree. We need to see more Chris and Joe because… reasons.

I thought they kind of dropped the ball with the potential of EoE. What they should have done is come out with a weekly ONLINE video of the dynamics of EoE. Kinda of like a bonus episode. I mean, how compelling would that be? I agree with your comparison to Ponderosa but with more suffering. The unfortunate reality is that the producers feel like they haven’t gotten enough viewership for Ponderosa videos WHICH IMO HAS BEEN EXCELLENT CONTENT! They are usually so well-edited and tend to pull at the heart strings every single time.

Devens or Lauren should definitely win at this rate. I also like Victoria, but she simply hasn’t made the big moves and definitely will have trouble getting credited for anything. Gavin seems to have a case, but I find it hard to believe that he’ll even make it to the end considering he’s one of the big threats left.

I am team Deven after the last 2 episodes. He is playing the best game out of the remaining contestants. I wonder if Kelley returns to the game, can she keep her idol?

No. A ubry also went to the edge with an idol and Jeff said you lose idols when you are voted out. Thus, Kelley also lose her idol.

He’s definitely playing the hardest out of everyone left. This episode convinced me. He’s not the best player ever, but out of the remaining cast, he’s looking like it!

I am not a Devens fan but I certainly see why he is popular, I guess.

I am not sure it was a blindside. The group of four or three.. was taken by surprise and had to decide if Deven’s was toying with them with either a fake idol or a fake declaration that he would use a real idol.

Devens and Julie voted Aurora. Aurora voted Julie. But the other three couldn’t know for sure how Devens and Julie voted so if they split their votes to be sure Julie had more, any one of them could be voted out. Thus they put their three votes on Aurora. But they had no blindside plan ahead of time, as far as I know.

Reem redeemed? Eh, not so much for me, but I hope she feels better about everything. Hopefully she won’t be the most bitter twisted ex Survivor around. I can think of two who are currently holding that title on that other show you may be recording..

Aurora had been winning often, so she wasn’t a horrible choice to go, given they couldn’t boot Devens and were made to believe they couldn’t boot Julie.

My feeling is that Tamara may get her wish with Chris returning from the Edge. I would prefer Joe, but I guess we will see soon enough.

Thanks as always, Cho (and Tamara)

Oh I won’t be mad at all if Joe comes back. More Joe is never a bad thing. I just don’t see how this will work out. Only two episodes? We have five people left and one coming back. Are they going to eliminate three people in the first episode? What if they did one HUGE challenge with everyone and just picked the top three winners overall?

I don’t know how they’re going to fit all this into the finale either. They really needed to give us more content for this season to flesh everyone out. I wish there were more online videos like Ponderosa. I wanna know more about the Edge of Extinction and what they talk about. Who they like and dislike (besides each other).

Also, we definitely need Chris or Joe back for reasons.

I thought it was a poorly premeditated plan for them to just play around Rick’s idol but blindsided Aurora with their majority 3 votes. They knew Aurora was voting against Julie, so Rick/Julie’s votes didn’t matter whatsoever. Now, they’re going to have issues next week, especially with another Edge of Extinction player joining. If I’m Julie/Rick, I align with that person and challenge the other 3 in a tie vote! We know Victoria will flip, because she’s a sneak!

I liked Reem’s episode because she was finally self aware. Every person, you and myself included, are flawed. So it’s nice to see people recognize it and learn from it. Not in a Ramona apologizer type of way, but in a genuine way.

Yeah, I totally get that. Kind of want better for her than she’s giving. Hope she gets it and improves. Yeah kinda judgey but she needs to take action to benefit. There’s no getting around that.

I LOVE Reem as a character on this show. As a human, I think she is flawed like everyone else, but who tf am I to judge? I think she has learned a tremendous lesson about her self. That growth is important, and for that alone I am a huge fan of hers.

We haven’t been able to gauge the jury through ponderosa videos which I think is a huge mistake. That being said, it does appear that way based on what people think in the game.

I plan on posing this question: does a player who was already voted out deserve to win the game? We saw the huge landslide all the way back in season 7 Pearl Islands.

Devens can taste his victory. He’s playing like a smart winner. The Edge of Extinction players(losers?) don’t seem to be going anywhere, with no opportunities to play again or for prizes? This has gotten confusing.

It is confusing, but I think one player will come back in the finale. I like the aimlessness that they have had to endure. It really adds an interesting dynamic that I don’t think they’ve fully explored.

Who do you want to come back?

Yeah, Devens didn’t really cause Aurora to leave the game. It was purely a move by Lauren. It sucks. Shockingly enough, I feel like I want Lauren to win the most out of anyone left.

People don’t like Devens because it seems like he’s gotten so many advantages a la the producers.

Did anyone notice that Aurora is an attorney? I didn’t like how she refused to work with anyone but her alliance. They had zero alliance with her. She didn’t have a good social game.

Why do people think Lauren should win? She hasn’t made any big moves. She went along with Kelley and Wardog’s plans. She had no plans on her own. I don’t get why Victoria and Gavin saved Lauren over Aurora.

I wish we had 2 hours of Survivor, 1 hour of the contestants, and a 2nd hour of Extinction Island. I do enjoy seeing Reem talk to the voted out contestant. She is not one to hold her tongue.

Aurora definitely could have done more to ingratiate herself with people outside of her alliance. While I get her wanting Rick out, you should never make it easy for people to want to write your name down. Aurora did that constantly, but she leaves the game being one of my favorites this season.

I hope to make a post about the remaining contestants. I’ll cover Lauren then! I’m rooting for her.

They definitely need more time. Reem needs an hour all to herself tbh.

Hoping for a Devens win. IMO, it will be an outrage if someone from EoE wins. The producers have done nothing to create any connection with those players. Devins got voted off, came back from EoE and has played an aggressive game. Finger’s crossed….

But Devens is an EoE player himself. It’s interesting. The debate right now is if he should be really considered an EoE player. Well, factually, he definitely is. He was voted off pre-merge. He’s definitely played a rough game and come out on top due to his hustling and the laziness of others.

I am team Devon! Out of all the players left he tries the hardest, all the rest have taken minor risks at best. Except, I did think Aurora was a great player, she got in her own way by not trusting anyone enough to make an alliance. I would like Devons and someone from Edge of Extinction. I think EoE was a great addition except the show barely showed them. EoE should have been played with by the producers more. They should have had folks join them earlier, so many possibilities!
This show is so fun. I cant wait for next week!

I totally agree with you, Kris! More content should have been offered surrounding EoE. At least they could have made weekly episodes online every week. Overall, I’m OK with the season but there was so much potential for more I think.

I cannot believe how lazy the other players were about seeking out an idol or keeping an eye of fellow competitors who are looking for an idol. I get it that they are hungry and worn out, but so is Devens. Come on. Get some initiative folks. My money is on Lauren. I am loving that she has an idol and no one even remotely suspects it.

I agree. It always shocks me how lazy the Survivors can be especially when they have all ganged up on another person. Did they not think he would be searching day and night?

I love Lauren aka the Warpup. I think she’s played decently well for a under the radar game. She was a part of successful alliances and was really scrappy. Her blindside of Aurora I don’t think is getting enough credit.
