Project Runway: A Basic Bitch

March 15, 2019 by tamaratattles 61 Comments

By CJ Bomb (& Les)

The prodigal show has returned home. Project Runway is back on Bravo! We lost Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum but we got to keep Nina Garcia. Also, we picked up an amazing new cast. Les and I are cautiously optimistic. Everyone working on this show is legit. And the prize is also legit. 250K and collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America? Count us in. We wonder what they are going to keep and change? Let’s dive in shall we?

Karlie Kloss enters doing a pose that Alyssa Milano always tries to pull off and never can. Les texts that her innate sophistication has already made the show better. The woman is a freaking supermodel for Pete’s sake. There are sixteen new designers that are highlighted in a runway show to give us a taste of their sense of style.

Meet The New Judges And The Designers

The seasons judges are Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell, and Elaine Welteroth. Two editors in chief of a legit fashion publications and a blue chip fashion designer. Plus, our resident superstar fashion pixie Christian Siriano as the new mentor to the designers. I have met him in person at a trunk show. He fitted me personally and was just as awesome as you would imagine him to be. ACTUAL fashion influencers and press are there. I’m guessing there is no rep from JCPenney. Les and I agree it is a nice way to begin. We like some of the looks more than others. We love Rakan, Tessa Clark, Jamall and Kovid. I guess Hester Sunshine is our resident kook. Nadine Ralliford is our hometown Georgia girl.

The designers head to the workroom which is in a very cool looking loft. Christian Siriano greets them and tells them he’s not there to judge, but to help guide and support them. He is perhaps the only human on the planet capable of taking Tim’s place. He’s also been through the process.

The First Challenge

The first challenge is related to the four judges. There are four photos showing them having their first “moment” in fashion. Karlie Kloss is walking a runway at age 13, Brandon Maxwell brought a picture of his mom modeling a suit in his grandmother’s store. Nina Garcia brought a picture of herself styling her first shoot. Elaine Welteroth brought her first cover shoot for Ebony magazine of Serena Williams rocking a bathing suit celebrating her curves and her strength. The designers have twenty minutes to sketch and talk to the judges about their inspirations. The judges explaining the backgrounds behind their pictures their words are amazing. Les and I are inspired. THEY HAVE TWO DAYS!!!!!!

Everyone is assigned a model. There are all shapes and sizes which is a great thing. Hester Sunshine is already annoying me. Tessa Clark grew up with miller dad and ceramicist mom so she is incorporating an apron into her minimalist design. Renee Hill loves the “mom” inspiration because she has NINE kids. Nine. Les texts: “Damn.” Frankie is doing a bodysuit.

A Deluxe Apartment In The Sky And Mood Money!

The designers head to a penthouse where they will all be living together. Everyone is thrilled except for Cavanagh who Les and I have already deemed the resident princess. She can’t remember the last time she slept in a twin bed, but thinks it was in Europe when they had to push them together to make a king. I’m happy Joan Sebastian Grey, who cleans houses for a living and Frankie Lewis who is currently couch surfing because her boyfriend dumped her, aren’t there to hear this entitled commentary. Renee Hill needs to be in a room with all women as she is a Muslim.

At Mood, everyone runs around frantically trying to get the fabric they need as well as the lay of the land. Lela Orr is an luxury eco designer so she is buying recycled fabric. Frankie is thrilled she has $250 to shop as she has never had this big of a budget. Cavanaugh who has eclipsed Hester Sunshine as my least favorite says that a two hundred dollars is an insufficient amount of money to shop for quality fabric. She is doing a jacket over a dress and hoping that the cheap wool crepe will work. I don’t like this woman. Christian Siriano is trying to help an indecisive Hester Sunshine.

Christian Siriano starting his mentoring role.
Christian Siriano starting his mentoring role.

The New Project Runway Workroom

Lela Orr

Back in the workroom everyone settles in and gets down to pattern making. There are so many designers right now I’m going to try and remember everyone as Christian Siriano comes through and gives his critique.

They are focusing on Frankie, Hester, Cavanaugh and Tessa so that makes me think at least those four are going to be in the top or bottom. Hester Sunhine has realized she stupidly picked material she has never worked with and is now having major issues. Kovid Kapoor, who is one of our favorites kindly tells her she is talented and he believes in her. He is doing a “goddess gown.”

Cavanaugh tells us about how her father, who has recently passed, was so proud of her and a big inspiration in her life even though he wasn’t a fashionable person. Our hearts soften towards her a little bit.

Venny Etienne thinks his outfit is too basic so he adds feathers to make it more festive.

Frankie Lewis realizes she has put a seam down the front of her body suit and needs to redo it. Gary “Garo Sparo” Spampinato tells her that she doesn’t want “the toes of the camel”. Truer words, Garo. He’s worried Frankie struggling.

A New Project Runway Twist

Losing Look Episode 1 Season 17
The basic bitch

The next day, Christian Siriano and Karlie Kloss come in and Karlie announces a new component to the show. On select challenges the viewers will be able to vote on their favorite looks and the viewer favorite as well as the judge’s winning choice will be manufactured by 19th amendment and sold on the Bravo website. The designers will take pics of their models in their completed looks and post them to Bravo’s Instagram story. Les and I agree that this is a good twist.

More Advice From Christina Siriano

Kovid Kapoor is soooo excited to have Christian Siriano critique him. He calls him Mr. Siriano. He explains how he wants to do a structured jacket over his flowy goddess dress. Christian tells him to think about not doing too many elements and keep it cool and modern. Maybe not do the jacket.

Venny Etienne is taking Christian’s advice by not adding more feathers to his look or adding more patchwork elements to the top. Christian tells him the feathers on the hips are the statement of the piece. KISS is always good advice. I use it frequently. (Keep it simple stupid). He also tells him it’s alright to cry. We love Christian.

Christian Siriano tells Cavanaugh that the jacket over her dress needs to be very special, otherwise she has just done a basic black dress. He tells her to get moving.

Oh Frankie. Christian Siriano tells her to make sure the fit of her bodysuit is celebrating her model’s body, not constricting it. He points out some basic design issues. She assures him she will keep it classy as there are no stripper poles on the runway.

Hester Sunshine with model

The Project Runway Models Arrive

The models come in and Les and I are confused. Is this all the critique we are getting? Cavanaugh is in trouble. She sewed her jacket incorrectly and it is way too small. Kovid Kapoor makes us love him even more when his models tells him how excited she is to be the first transgender model on Project Runway. He tells her how honored he is to dress her. Kovid says she is gorgeous and that she’s an actual goddess wearing his gown. He feels a connection to her as they both come from countries where being who they are is basically illegal. Back home in India, the neighbors called the police on him and his boyfriend of eight years. They were forced to flee.

Frankie Lewis did not account for her model’s height and her bodysuit is looking more like a bikini. She starts to cry. We are guessing Frankie and Cavanaugh are going to be in the bottom two. Hester Sunshine comes over to comfort Frankie Lewis and Christian Siriano then runs over to help her simplify and encourages her to make it work.

Runway Day

Tessa Clark Winning Look Episode 1 Season 17
Tessa Clark

We know for sure that Frankie and Cavanaugh are in the bottom. As Afa Ah Loo steps in to help Frankie put in a zipper, Cavanaugh asks her MODEL to hand sew something. Afa tells us he is more inclined to help Frankie because she and Cavanaugh are two very different people. He thinks Frankie is very kind and warm and Cavanaugh? Well he doesn’t want to be a douchebag on TV. I guess our princess vibes were correct.

After hair and makeup, the designers head off to take their photos for Instagram. Cavanaugh tells us she would never use a phone to take a picture for social media. All the pictures they use are professionally shot. Girl, have a fucking SEAT. Tessa Clark has no problem using her phone. She does it all the time and has five different accounts. Six people step in to help Frankie finish. Cavanagh thinks the only person who you should be counting on should be you. I do think that Frankie is way over her head. I also think that Cavanaugh should be worried about her extremely basic look.

The Runway

Karlie Kloss comes out looking like the supermodel she is. There is no guest judge this week.

Renee Hill stunning look Season 17 episode 1
Renee Hill

Inspired by Brandon Maxwell

Venny Etienne Les texts: No like the feathers. I just don’t think most of us want feathers highlighting our hips. It’s very editorial though.

Nadine Ralliford Les texts: No like this biker shorts. I don’t care for this either. It is a weird juxtaposition of elements and while I’m usually down for that, I don’t think these elements work together.

Cavanagh Baker Basic and boring. Slit too high. Les didn’t even comment on this one.

Renee Hill. Les loves Brandon’s triple take on this. I think it is very classy and elegant take on a traditional suit. Taking the skirt off and turning it into a cape worked.

Inspired by Karlie Kloss

Lela Orr. I think the asymmetrical top is a nice color but too long. I also think the shiny skirt worked fabric wise, but I’m not sure about pairing it with tennis shoes. It looks poorly made.

Rakan “Shams” Aldeen Les hates this jumpsuit. I think it is the wrong fabric choice. I know how much work went into it, but between the washed out color and the shape it feels basic and not in a good way.

Jamaal Osterholm Les hates this one too. I actually like this. And once I can stop focusing on the model’s nipples, I am really digging the pants. I bet this looks a heck of a lot better in person.

Bishme Cromartie Les texts one word: AWFUL. She thinks this challenge was too wide and abstract. I like the sleeves of the top but I think the pants are not flattering at all.

Afa Ah Loo

Inspired by Nina Garcia

Garo Sparo Les is digging this. I think his take on sailing chic is at least interesting. I’m not sure about the corset belt.

Tessa Clark Les thinks that she should have worked on matching the front to the back more. I LOVE this. It’s modern and cool. I love the simplicity of the neckline, the length of the tunic and how the straps flow in the back. It looks expensive to me.

Sonia Kasparian I don’t even remember this designer. Les writes: Been there, done that…Just dress a lady in sails and send her off. I actually like it. It looks like a modern sailing kimono jumpsuit. It flows nicely down the runway.

Sebastian Grey Les thinks that this is a good look. I think it looks editorial for a photo shoot on a yacht. The ties around the ankles look good on a runway and in a photo but would be a major pain in the ass in real life. I have a pair in my closet. They have been worn once.

Inspired by Elaine Welteroth

Afa Ah Loo Les thinks the train of the dress made the model look bigger and it was unflattering. I am in complete agreement on this. If he had hemmed the bottom properly and left off the train this dress would be amazing. It looks heavy as it is.

Frankie Lewis We hear Nadine Ralliford telling Cavanagh to stop worrying because this is the look that is going home. Cavanagh replies that at least she took a risk. Les texts: Cheeky on runway = going home. It is going to be between these two as this is awful but Cavanaghs was awful AND boring.

Hester Sunshine Les loves the idea of a deconstructed cocktail dress. I actually don’t hate this. I weirdly kind of like it and think it would look great on a young girl.

Kovid Kapoor Les thinks that Kovid’s dress has been done too many times. I think it is a pretty flowy goddess dress. Not much more than that.

CJ & Les Choose Tops & Bottoms

Les must have gotten distracted because I didn’t get her top and bottom three. So I’m just going to imagine she thinks Frankie is headed home and I agree. My favorite was Tessa.

The judges discuss Frankie Lewis’ swimsuit.

Judges’ Feedback

Elaine Welteroth wants to know where Venny thinks his girl is going. She tells him she would wear the jacket. Nina has a great reaction to this? She thinks that there is a lot going on but she would rather have more ideas than less. Brandon thinks the model looked confident and happy wearing it and that it what matters most.

Brandon Maxwell cannot believe that Cavanaugh spent her whole budget. He thought she had money left over to buy herself a drink. Nina Garcia’s look made ME almost burst into tears. Elaine Welteroth says that it says a lot that she’s not surprised by any of their critiques on her basic boring dress.

Brandon thought there was a quiet strength to Renee Hill’s look that totally represents his mom. Awwwww. Elaine Welterworth was so impressed with her skill set that she cannot wait to see more.

Nina Garcia thinks that Lela Orr captured young Karlie’s essence but there’s not a lot of design. Karlie Kloss thinks if you are going to do simple you need to do it perfectly.

Nina Garcia thinks that Tessa Clark’s design looks expensive and that is the best compliment that she gives: LUXE. She thinks the cut of the pant is superb. Brandon Maxwell got chic fisherman.

Frankie Lewis starts off by telling the judges she knows this sucks. Not a good way to start. Elaine Welteroth tells her it lacks craftsmanship. Nina Garcia thinks comfort equals confidence and this is awful.

Bye, bye basic bitch!

Won won? Who went home?

Tessa Clark is the winner! So the designers decide basic is worse than bad. Cavanaugh is headed home.

So what did you guys think? Love it? Hate it? What is better? What needed to be better? We are dying to hear your thoughts. I know this was a long one. Personally, I wanted more critiques personally.

Have a FABULOUS weekend  and see you next week for more Project Runway!  xoxo CJ and Les!

First of all, A HUGE THANKS to CJ for all of her posts here, but for this one in particular.

Sixteen new designers. A new mentor. Three new judges. Ninety minutes of new information, rules… sets. New day of the week. So many new names that weren’t easy like “Bob Johnson” or “Sally Brown”

It took hours to write and BOY WAS IT WORTH IT! At least to us, maybe not to her. 🙂

You may have picked up on a few things about CJ reading her posts. She’s fancy. She doesn’t sit in the ghetto in old man pajamas (FYI it’s clean pajamas day! I bathed and left the house and everything because the tax man waits for no (woah)man. She as a job. A good, fancy job. She has kids. She has a pretty house.

I can’t believe we talked her in to this. So please show her some love, and Les too. (Texting is probably hard.) 🙂

Now, the fat chick in the old man jammies (tonight is a lovely charcoal grey solid with luxurious black piping and black buttons $20 Walmart) errr,,,, weigh in.

I love that there are two plus designers, the Somalian dud Afa Ah Loo clearly loves a big girl. However he has a donut problem. We saw two of his dressess last night and both times the model had a donut. For you skinny bitches, a donut happen when the fabric is a wee bit too snug on the belly button so your belly button looks like a hole in a giant donut. Scroll up and you will see. Also, he has some construction issues.

The other plus sized designer, Frankie Lewis is adorable. She went from coach surfing to the penthouse. When she said she never had $250 to spend on fabric in her life, I got a little misty. She’s just super excited. It says a lot about her that her competitors were willing to teach her how to use and invisible zipper foot. And did you see how many hugged her after she stayed? She’s my girl and she is going to be fine.

I liked Tessa’s winning outfit. BUT no one can tell me that Renee Hill should not have won this week.

I’m so glad The Basic Bitch (I named this recap, don’t blame CJ) is gone. I was having flashback to Banana girl and sometimes production makes them keep the awful people (at least she wasn’t a twin) around forever.

The other reason I’m glad she is gone is because Nadine Ralliford my homegirl was all sidled up to her. I hope she is just one of those people that is nice to everyone. And I get why she told basic bitch Frankie was going home. I love Nadine’s personal style and I think she could go far.

And finally, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH CJ BOMB! How do you not love someone named Hester Sunshine? LEAVE HESTER ALONE! Yesterday CJ said she didn’t like bitches (Irina), now she doesn’t like kooks (We prefer kooky as an adjective not kooks as a now. We are more than just kooky!) And we already know she is probably a sample size. So this fat, kooky, bitch is starting to feel unloved. 🙂

Hester is an icky, icky name. I know its probably some Hebrew goddess or something, but the only two Hesters I can remember are serial killers from TV. Oh, and Lea Michele played a “Hester” once.

Anyway I digress. I’m actually gonna watch this one! You guys have actually made it sound interesting…

It’s like someone in the Bravo office said, “Hmmm. Project Runway. But make it FASHION.”

I need to watch the first episode again when I get time to watch without working. There was a fashion show at the beginning that had looks that each of them brought with them. Things they had spent time on. I was very impressed with what I saw and now that CJ has helped me flesh out who is who it would be helpful going forward knowing who was who.

These photos have interesting file names like “plus size model” “that look by someone that should have won” “the basic bitch” “probably the Samoan” etc.

I think I had kooky PTSD from banana girl. (won’t say her name) after Hester was kind to Frankie and I saw her dress I have officially changed my mind and I now like her. I have no problems with kooks on this show, as long as they are qualified kooks lol.

Totally worth it, as always. Worth the work from all three of you.

Interesting names, and not everyone is so young.

Yes, donut is a good description!

Hester Sunshine ? .Hmmm the jury is out on her..

I am watching the season with Kenley right now.. Now there was someone with a bitchy, bratty, attitude! (And Tim Gunn is in the reruns).

I hope Frankie pulls out something good soon. She has a league of volunteer mentors so far.

    I adore Christian Siriano.

Savor every Tim Gunn moment if you are seeing those for the first time. Over the years, he has made few negative comments, but there was the “Kenley, ugh!” He was not happy with Nell’s winning collection. I think he was befuddled when Gretchen won. (All things I agreed with.) There was another “princess” negative, not Irina, comment. MAYBE Chloe, second season winner?

I have savored Tim moments and watched every season as it aired.

        I have read Tim’s book.

I am just enjoying the reruns and remembering how much I hated Wendy Pepper and how abrasive Memory was.

I loved Chloe and have enjoyed her appearances on The Little Couple. She has made some amazing outfits for Dr Arnold, who is far from the model body type.

Anyway, nothing new, but loving the reruns.

I LOVED when Chloe made appearances on the Little Couple. She made such lovely clothes for Jenn and they fit perfectly. Her collection on PR was a masterpiece of patternmaking. When I rewatched, I thought maybe I was too harsh on Wendy Pepper. Then … she turned … and I remembered why I didn’t like her and was so pissed she won that last challenge that sent Austin Scarlett home. Still sad she’s gone and left behind a young daughter.

Hester is a variant I Esther, and is of Hebrew origin. Means myrtle, bride or star.

And it is probably not her birth name, but that means she does it,calling with the kitschy headgear.

I find it distracting, but it must make her happy.

Hester is Jewish. Hester aka Ester in the Bible was a Jew who married a Persian King and convinced him not to kill all the Jews. Of course then she and the Jews started killing a whole shitload of Persians, but that part is generally ignored as part of the story. Because brown people. But um, anyway, Hester, aka Ester is considered a Jewish heroine in the Bible. Despite, you know, all the drama about whether or not Ester really is a book of the Bible. But it”s a good story.

Actually, the Persians and Jews lived in harmony until the Persian king’s minister stirred up trouble and got the king to declare a day that Persians would kill all the Jews. When things were cleared up, a second declaration was sent out saying that the Jews could fight back in self defence if attacked.

“When things were cleared up” was when Hester told Ahasuerus “yo I forgot to mention I’m Jewish so it would be swell if you would stop all the killing of the Jews” and then the Jews got their day to kill a bunch of people. That was so much fun they killed a bunch more afterward.

According to the chapter of Ester which is a chapter of the Bible that didn’t really meet the requirements to get into the Bible but somehow got there anyway.

I’m confident we’re in for a good season. I didn’t miss Heidi. I love Mr. Gunn, and I liked that Christian was not trying to be him, he was doing Christian and it worked for me. Karlie was/is stunningly elegant. Respect all the judges. 2 days for a challenge. Age diversity on display. talented contestants, some even with kudos. What more could I ask for? Christian should be present when the judges get a close up look at the clothes. Will there be the the Christian S. save?

I hope the integrity and quality displayed thus far will continue.

Love me some Project Runway Bravo! Hadn’t heard of Brandon Maxwell, googled his creations and they are beautiful. He used to be a stylist then became a designer without formal training. Very talented. Christian Siriano was a surprisingly mature mentor. I’m a big fan of his but I was impressed that he held back on saying his gut reaction to some of the designs. You could see him take a few seconds before responding to neutralize his critique by encouraging the designers to simplify their design (excessive feathering) or reducing scope (Kovid’s jacket). I think I could make some money by coming up with a donut plug, I’m surprised Spanx does haven’t a silicone insert. It’s definitely distracting to see a ginormous belly button cave.

Tessa and Renee were deserving of top spots. How did the feather outfit end up in the top 3? Many other better looks than the feather hips.

I don’t like day 1 crying. Haven’t you watched the show? If you can’t deal with time constraints, this is not the show for you. No crying again Frankie. Tears are okay, just not crying. I don’t like that you gave up your dog. I won’t even ask if you took it to a shelter. But you do seem to be a nice person. Since you have not worked with a large budget before I fear you will not know how to work with expensive upscale materials. I thought for sure you had lost the competition when you accidentally pulled out an unsewn piece of trim that was tucked into another piece of trim on your bodysuit.

Styling can kill an outfit. I wouldn’t put heavy clunky sneakers on Lela’s outfit. Otherwise I liked it other than the puckering at the seams.

Cavanaugh, did anyone ever tell you that just because you think it, doesn’t mean you should say it? And even though you seem incredibly entitled, I would have saved you and sent Frankie home.

I will have rewatch the show to see the original runway and then to see the competition runway. It all went by too quickly. I can’t remember things like I used to

I think Nina said it best – thank God for the accessory wall. I paused, and looked again at the dress. The only interesting elements on it were from the wall, period. It wasn’t even a great little black dress. (The length was boring). I can’t believe she didn’t add ANY twill element. She had that fabric. Cut up the shitty jacket and make a belt. Make a collar.. Make a twill stripe down each side. SOMETHING.

After looking at her website and watching again her design skills — it looked like she had no idea how to make a jacket — i think she is just “Ramonaing” on the brand. EVERYTHING, including the “professional” photos is BASIC-O-RAMA!

As always, your recap is fantastic!
I need to watch again, I do not remember so many of the designers.

I loved the winning look and I think it also lets us know that Nina will play the Grand Dame card and her favorite will win in a split decision.

    Thanks for the recap!
Love karlie & she can read cue cards without guffaws and long pauses, yeah! Love Christian & all the judges.
Kovid is too over the top.
We can’t judge the contestants work based on their back stories. Frankie has a rough past, but she had 6 people helping her finish her outfit, yet still, all the straps weren’t sewn on.
Cavanaugh is a bitch and I’m glad she went home. She wrapped a pc of fabric and criss crossed it, sewed the top,but left the split up to her katchuk!
I liked the winner’s look. Classy, sewn well, and made a statement with the back side.
I don’t like the different size models. I don’t think it’s fair to have that much of a difference in height & weight and call it an even playing field. No way does someone who’s belly is humped over their undies, jiggling down the runway, look good in their garment. Sorry, but in comparison to another model who is long, tall, sleek, and doesn’t gave a lot of girth and cellulite in their butt??? Not fair in a fashion design competition.
I did like this challenge. Makes me wonder if Nina was an influence & if she has had ideas that were maybe not considered from her past producers/cast mates?
I want to see more Aha on camera. Loved his facial responses while watching Cavanaugh’s model sewing her garment!
Love the story of the guy from Columbia & also like his designs. Good first episod

Forgot to mention that Hester reminds me of Erin Robertson (PR winner Season 15). Her designs, at first, looked like cartoon costumes, but after seeing her console Frankie it seems she is no where near as droll as
Erin. Also, her design for this challenge did not look anything like her portfolio designs.
In addition, I did love Renee’s design. She has real talent. Looking forward to seeing that mom of nine kids show the world all of her design magic!
I also liked that Christian did not try to steel the show, which he could have, but instead he let the contestants be featured and gave great advice like a good mentor should do.
Love that they had 2 days to do this challenge with 250 bucks to spend. Nice change from the rush-rush and stretch a dollar budget on Lifetime.

        Translation:

I have been brainwashed to believe only anorexic blond teenagers are attractive and should be on a high fashion runway.

The nerve this show expecting designers to make fat women look nice in clothes. Why don’t fat chicks just get off the runways and stop eating and stay home sitting around naked (or in their men’s Walmart pajamas) until they are a size two. GODDAMN! IF I AM NOT ALLOWED TO EAT ANYTHING, I DON’T NEED TO SEE FAT BITCHES WADDLING DOWN RUNWAY. IT’S GROSS! I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO AVERT MY EYES!

Errr…. I mean,.. it’s not fair to the designers to have to dress fat women. How could they possibly make them look nice?

Also I am very hungry. Does anyone have half an almond?

          Not true, Tamara.
Let me put it this way, if I were to be put into clothes and walk on a runway next to my friend, who looks good in a paper sack, because of her shape, it would not be an even playing field for the contestant who had ME as their model.
Because I don’t look good in anything fitted. I have a belly and I am overweight and I know that would NOT be fair in a competition where others are judged in comparison.
Not saying plus size models can’t look good in designer clothes.
Not what I said at all.
If they want to use plus size models than ALL of the contestants should use them, not just two. I’m talking about an even playing field.

What I am saying is that good designers can design for all bodies. Just ask Christian Siriano. It makes no difference to him if he is designing for kate moss or Whoopi Goldberg they all look beautiful on the red carpet. It’s an even playing field because they most likely will all have different models throughout the show.

I am thrilled that there are at least two plus sized designers this season. Frankie really needs to get it together! Will they be disadvantaged with a tiny model? Any of the designers with a lack of diversity in their previous designs in this day and age will just have to deal with it.

Maybe they do all keep their models but Frankie and the Samoan guy were the only ones with plus sized models this time and they both do plus sized.

I agree that they all should be able to design for various sized people. But, look at Frankie’s model. Frankie didn’t see her before she designed that body suit. I don’t think neither Aha’s nor Frankie’s mannequin’s were plus sized. So, that was a disadvantage. Also, when Frankie finally got to do a fitting she realized her model had an 8 inch difference in the pattern size she created. Very different than the other contestants who had models with little variance. That is a big disadvantage and it’s hard to adjust 8 inches on a body suit. She said she allowed for some variance, but not 8 inches. She should have started over at that point, but not sure how skilled she is. Anyway, good for you on keeping up with your new regimen. I’ve been up and down with my weight my whole life. I don’t like the word exercise. I prefer to turn the sound down on my tv, turn up my fun music, and dance. As long as I’m moving I’m feeling better and I can get my groove on while I’m doing it.

Frankie and Afa’s models were both plus sized. Both are shown in photos above. Those are the only two plus sized models I saw. Also, they were given their models measurements so I don’t know how Frankie fucked that up.

There’s so many designers I can’t keep up with the designs. I was impressed with Karli Kloss and Christian Siriano. I only knew of Karli through her association with Taylor swift, so I wasn’t expecting much, but she was slyly amusing . I didn’t know what to expect from Christian . He’s still a young designer and has a point of view. He did fine and seemed very sweet .

Two day challenges lead to more interesting designs. I loved Tessa’s dress, but my favorite was Renee’s suit. It was wonderful in all it’s variations.

I really enjoyed the episode and was anxiously awaiting the recap. Thank you CJ and Les – you didn’t disappoint!

There were so many things to like about this episode: Karli and Christian (I also enjoyed them later on WWHL), all three judges, and the initial kick-off fashion show as a way for the designers to introduce themselves through their designs. I really liked that the judges were part of the challenge and were able to share some of their backgrounds, which made them seem much more real than we might have seen in seasons past. I also really enjoyed hearing the judges’ critiques and the exuberance of Brandon Maxwell as he asked “Is this the winner?” That might not be a direct quote, but I thought his enthusiasm was sweet. I don’t recall seeing that during the judges’ reviews on prior seasons.

I loved both of the top two designs but thought that Renee’s design was better. I’m looking forward to seeing more from her and many of the other designers. I’m actually surprised that Cavanaugh was cut on the first episode. Unfortunately, it often seems that many think bitchy makes for good tv and people like that are kept around too long. I’m glad that wasn’t the case here. Frankie is going to have to step up her game, though.

Lastly, poor Alyssa Milano and Project Runway All-stars over on Lifetime. Lifetime really should have tried to wrap up broadcasting that season before Bravo’s season premiered. The side-by-side comparison makes the Lifetime version seem like even more of a mess.

And it seems more diverse with the designers so hopefully there will be some great designs once they settle in!

I loved the new twists. To incorporate social media is brilliant and not a gimmick because so many DO use Instagram. I love the variety of models. It is absolutely fair. Christian Siriano is absolute proof.

I looked… you can preorder the winning look, AND IN A PLUS SIZE. Of course, I still couldn’t do it because I’d need a bra. Not sure if it would handle having a shirt worn under it.

both the winner and Hester need to watch the nipple look though.

I was shocked Frankie didn’t go home. Don’t they all get their model’s measurements? How did she get it so wrong? 8 inches is a lot. Plus, the way she acted so emotionally and over-the-top really got on my nerves. In the future, I hope the judges go on the merits of the designers instead of whatever reasoning cause them to keep Frankie, or I probably won’t keep watching. Cavanagh was an entitled pain in the ass, but next to Frankie she looked good and she would have been someone we could all hate. That’s always entertaining.

I was glad to see that Nina came back and liked Christian but I’m still unsure of Karlie, although I think she’ll be fine. Overall, I thought the show was good but I always have to watch the first couple of episodes twice because I have a real problem keeping everyone straight. At this point, it’s all still a big blur.

Thank you Tamara for finding THE BEST fashion recapper. Wit, whimsy, biting satire, kindness AND an encyclopedic knowledge of fashion history. Les, thanks for adding another intelligent point of view. And Fashion Dominatrix/Goddess CJ, I love that you reference well-known AND more obscure genius designers and point out designs that reference past bona fide collections — often with the season and year!

I had high expectations for this year’s judges and mentor and every one exceeded them. Brava, Bravo!

I UNDERSTAND the decision to use all-size models; but I agree with Bungalow Chris that it does not present a level playing field EACH CHALLENGE. What would make it more fair is IF the dressforms were true to the body of the real person. Ashley Graham is an example of a model who would fit a larger MANUFACTURED form. There should be CUSTOM forms if the models don’t match. Or all thin or all thick models for each challenge. I would most like if the designers could choose if they want straight or curvy models to match their lines. Plus: TIME, what you are used to; MONEY, larger takes more fabric. Siriano designs for all sizes, but he WON the COMPETITION with traditional.

I loved the winning look, especially the back — those BUTTONS. Agreed with Princess Cavanaugh Baker being sent home. Her “design” was LESS than basic. That jacket attempt was a MESS. Check out her collection to see the “professional” photos of her “luxury” collection if you have doubt. I hope Daddy left her lots of money. At least Frankie showed an attempt at design.

This new version of Project Runway needs yet another season to become more put together. Right now it looks a bit messy.

Frankie’s tears and throwing herself on the floor like it was a show from a type of crazy church gathering might have been one of the few extremely embarrassing moments I have seen on PR, and I have watched all seasons.

I watched the episode again and enjoyed it more the second time around as I was more familiar with the designers and could better identify the designers to their outfits as they came down the runway. Loved the very end where Cavaugh was a talking head and said how glad she was to be able to go wash her hair. Nice takeaway from being on Project Runway.

Went to Cavanaugh’s website. Her outfits retail for $250 – $500. Some dresses are really really short. I was surprised to see that she sells a blinged out poop patch for $80. A sequined poop design. Described as “Cute poop patch for a touch of charisma” . I don’t think she understands the definition of charisma but I will give her credit for having some sense of whimsy

Great recap, ladies. I was happy to see Cavanagh go home because she just didn’t seem like a very nice, or very talented person. By the way, the beds were full size, not twin & two twin beds do not a king size make. It’s interesting to see them incorporating larger models on the show. It’s important for designers to be able to design for every body type (and Christian is a perfect example of that sort of designer). Not only have some of these designers not designed for larger women, judging by the fabrics they chose, it looks like some of them have never even seen anyone who weighs more than 110 lbs. Clingy fabrics, without the benefit of Spanx, aren’t very flattering on any of us. I’m truly looking forward to this season.
