Real Housewives of Atlanta: Lost In Translation

February 10, 2019 by tamaratattles 31 Comments

We are still in Tokyo, Japan where the Real Housewives of Atlanta are having loud and embarrassing fights in public and disrespecting the poor tour guide. I’m very late getting started because I was at a family function that rain long and then got lost in the rain in the dark going home so I am a bit jangled by my latest foray into THE WORLD. But let’s get this recap going and see what the Real Housewives of Atlanta do next!

In the first scene, Porsha Williams  got some gorgeous flowers delivered to her room from Dennis McKinley. Right away, they are enough for Porsha to forgive all of his transgressions with former girlfriends. Back in Atlanta, with Porsha  out of the country so Dennis is probably smoothing things over with the other ladies in person.

Pajama Party!

Tanya Sam and Shamari Devoe are setting up a pajama party with the girls and Tanya is quite good at it! Nary a fake penis in sight!  When Porsha shows up it is all about her and how Dennis McKinley is already telling Tanya’s husband they are getting married. Then Marlo Hampton busts in throwing shade and singing her own praises about whatever. I tend to tune her out subconsciously. I’ve had way too much Tamar Braxton in my life lately and there is no more room in my tolerance for obnoxious behavior to include Marlo Hampton.

Speaking of obnoxious, where is Nene? Is she still pouting in her room? I feel like it has been a month since I’ve seen this show. As the women arrive to the party, they are all in lingerie except for Kandi Burruss who is in pajamas. Because, pajama party. I would be right there with Kandi. I WANT those pajamas!

Party Pooper!

Nene Leakes shows up being pissy about Tanya. WTF is Nene’s issue? In typical Nene Leakes fashion, she is dragging down the whole party in her ripped jeans and “Japanese” Kimono. I am starting to think that what production loved about this trip is how much she is pissing off Nene. Nene Leakes was a nightmare to production some of these housewives think that production works for them despite their employment contract coming from the production company (not Bravo). And some of the diva behaviors are no longer being tolerated. *cough*LVP *cough* and that attitude seems to be extended to Ms. Leakes this season. Nene is sucking all the fun out of the room and Tanya is doing a great job of ignoring her pouting.

Stripper Party!

Enter, the Asian strippers! They are hysterical. Where did production/Tanya find these people? Porsha claims that the “stripper”who kept his Levi’s socks on the whole time could get a job at The Swinging Richards. No honey, I haven’t been to The Swinging Richards in decades but last I looked they were the hottest gay dancers in Atlanta and the hot gay guy I sent went was so turned on the he… well I enjoyed that evening very much. Um, I digress.

Party Games!

It’s time for party games! Nene and Marlo are being party poopers. They should drink some of that alcohol and wipe the snarls off their faces! You are in Tokyo! It is a girls night to celebrate Eva Marcille‘s wedding. Y’all look like you are waiting in line to take a mugshot to add to the collection! Kandi wants sexier games. Porsha grabs pickles and Kandi thinks they should hold a pickle like a penis and someone else should emulate their favorite sex position. As odd as it sounds, this got everyone laughing even ole NayNay. The ladies all start to argue about how people should “assume the position” Everyone is laughing and in complete hysterics.

The Real Party Happened Off Camera!

Off to the club they go. There were no cameras there, but I do remember seeing the Instastories. When Marlo got back to the hotel, she was trashed and security had to let her into her room. She is super drunk and the guy wants to check her ID. It’s four am and when the door opens she just waltzes into the room and ignores him. But not for explaining to him ten times that she is the most beautiful black woman in Tokyo. Girl, you are not even in the top three of your housewives group!  A producer was tasked with making sure she got back to her room and filmed the hot mess on his/her phone. They probably had to tell the employee it was actually her room.

Nene talks to Gregg and he is rescheduling his surgery because he wants a morning surgery and not an afternoon one. Why is that such a big deal to him you think? He doesn’t want to worry all day?  He thinks the doctor will be fresher in the morning?

Pity Party!

Nene says that she and Gregg haven’t been talking while she was in Tokyo and she hasn’t had a good trip because of it. She complains to Gregg. Gregg is being very sweet to her when he speaks. When Cynthia Bailey knocks on the door, Nene tells Gregg she will call him later. By that time, it’s already 9:30pm in Atlanta! Let the man go to bed. Nene unloads to Cynthia. She cries. I know she is genuinely upset. Nene doesn’t have any support and that is hard. Cynthia tries to be there but there is only so much she can do. This is something Nene has to just go through. I do have sympathy for her.  Gregg can’t be her support right now. She has to carry the load.

*Production Meeting somewhere in Atlanta. Producer one, “Hey you know what we should do in Tokyo? After we get them all worked up, let’s take someplace and give them all Samurai swords and make them fight each other to the death!” Group of producers respond in unison “I love it!” Everyone laughs hysterically.*

サムライパーティー !

So here we are at the Samurai fight club. It turns out to be funnier than scary as they are smart enough not to give them real swords. Lately, Marlo loves to bring up how she sliced up a girls face disfiguring her for life that left her depressed she eventually killed herself a few years later. It’s like she is proud of that. She has quite the mugshot collection. Check out that bottom right one! It’s mugshot in a kimono! At the end of the day, Kandi’s dramatic death scene was the best. But Tanya’s confessional with all her Karate moves was the best part of the show. That will be a meme all over the internet for all time. I can’t wait to snag myself a copy of hat!

After beating each other to dramatic death with sticks, the ladies scamper back to the hotel to recover and rehearse their upcoming shady comments. Eva arrives at Nene’s door in a traditional Japanese kimono. She tells Nene that a local woman will bring kimonos to all the ladies and help them dress if they choose to wear them to dinner. Nene debates wearing the traditional kimono or the traditional man’s Hanes t-shirt tied in a knot to expose a belly roll or two and some very vulgar (in a nice Japanese dining area) ripped up jeans. Eventually, she decides not to wear the kimono.

Party Pooper!

While Eve is there, someone knocks on the door. Nene receives a gorgeous flower arrangement from Gregg. She reads the card and cries. Eva reads the card and I cry too. The man has a way with words and apologies. We get a long montage of Nene and Gregg scenes. There is a long flashback to Nene and Gregg’s wedding and their vows. Nene needs some time to herself. While Nene cries, Eva quietly leaves.

Dinner Party!

Later that night, all the ladies pile into the van to go to dinner. Once they enter the van, we see that everyone except for Porsha and Nene are in traditional kimonos. That nigh, the ladies will be having dinner at a geisha house. Probably the same one RHOBH went to. After they eat, the RHOA all do their highs and lows of the year. As usual, Kandi has so many highs she has to be cut off from listing them all. Because it is only an hour show, After that, Porsha goes on and on about how great Dennis is and how he gave her purpose. I hope he is everything she thinks. However, Kandi has something to say to Dennis…

Oh Kandi, don’t burst her bubble. She’s pregnant so she is stuck with him in her life!  Aw, Kandi apologizes to Porsha. She says people tried to say bad things about Todd and he turned out to be amazing. As she continues to speak, she gets teary-tied. Then, they hug it out. Damn, this episode is so emotional! I love Kandi. Over on her side of the table, Nene mentions Gregg’s cancer as her low. But. says there is something else that she just can’t talk about. I wonder if Gregg is cheating or was cheating? Or if he drained a bank account or something? It sounds like he did something terrible. I think Nene would call him out on the cheating; however, if Greg her drained a bank account she would never admit she’s in financial distress.

The Party’s Over!

At the end of the episode, they show the Real Houswives of Atlanta mid-season trailer instead of previewing next week. And. it seems the upcoming episodes of the Real Housewives of Atlanta will be a roller-coaster ride! We still have a long way to go! HOWEVER, the scene where Nene attacks a cameraman occurs in her suite in Tokyo! So it looks like that dramatic moment will soon be revealed.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta airs at 8 p.m. on Sunday nights which doesn’t give a girl much time to get home from family dinner before the recapping begins!

I think it’s ridiculous how Nene wants compassion for being a caretaker. Going around doing interviews and low key throwing your sick husband under the bus because of his life changing illness is ridiculous. And then she comes in the party with all her negative energy 😒. Bravo needs to think twice about paying her all that money to do nothing but be a selfish and jealous b!tch. That money they wasted on Nene could have went to Kenya and Phaedra because Nene just isn’t worth it anymore. The dinner scene was amazing and touching and I’m happy at the moment that Porsha and Kandi shared.

I too notice Nene never mentioning Greg in her prayers. In all her prayers and complaints about how her life has turned, never a mention of Greg’s personal struggles, just her own, and/or how it is affecting her! I have been through this with my late husband. Two years of him trying to cope with his mortality, and his anger, fear, and bitterness that went along with it. We suffered crippling financial repercussion during that time also, despite good insurance. There were many dark times when I felt alone and without support, but I always knew that the crisis was not really about me, it was about him, and my role was to step up to the plate and provide support, just as I know he would do for me. Just as Greg would do for Nene if she was the one with cancer. If Greg tried to make one minute of it about him, Nene would have crucified him.

During my low times, I never acted as bad as Nene does. Not even a smidgeon. Not that I was some saint, but I was compassionate enough to put myself in his place whenever it all got overwhelming and when I did that, NOTHING I was going through seemed as bad as what he was going through.

I simply cannot watch her pity party scenes, no matter what she seems to think she is going through. It’s because she make it 100% about her instead of the real victim here, Greg. I have to fast forward through Nene’s “poor me” scenes to avoid throwing my drink at the t.v.

I prayed for the strength and patience and perseverance to get through each day while my late husband was fighting a losing battle with a terrible cancer that hasn’t had any real advances in treatment over the last 45 years; I can’t judge Nene for doing the same. I also prayed countless times a day for my husband to have the same and even more. My prayers for him outnumbered my prayers for anyone at a rate that probably wasn’t good for my mental health. However I’ll never agree with Nene for putting Gregg on blast for being mean or needy during treatments/pain/fear/suffering, nor will I think her traveling all over the country/world without him as he’s fighting and still having what seems to be mostly good days for a cancer patient is a good thing. Her prayer for strength and patience just got to my hardened heart.

Nene being relatable typically does not compute but she was during that moment. When she received the gorgeous flowers, I assumed they were meant as a sweet gift sending Gregg’s love and support rather than an apology for something shady. Cancer breaks so many ppl financially. My late husband’s treatments and surgeries were right under a million dollars in the first year and half after diagnosis. Thankfully insurance covered everything, even private flights to and from surgeries because he needed high level medical care and a specially pressurized cabin. So many ppl have very basic insurance coverage w/high deductibles, and other prohibitive restrictions. We would’ve been in that boat as well had he not been in the military because we were in our early 20’s and “healthy”. Nene and Gregg could be in big trouble if they didn’t choose a great insurance plan. Sorry for rambling and getting off topic.

Our family right now is having to take care of my sister who was hit by a car on Nov. 29th of last year. She’s 42 and still in the hospital with a brain injury but not one time has anyone of of us gotten mad about having to take care of her, we’ve had to learn every single step of caring for her when she’s released and thank God every day she’s still here. She’s bitten, spit, pulled our hair, etc. plus her different moods swings but that’s ok because we love her and we are so grateful. Nene is a toxic & selfish individual over Gregg’s illness and my husband was killed in a plane crash in 1994 and I would give ANYTHING to have him back. Sorry this is so long but I had to vent. 😂

There were rumors awhile ago that Gregg blew through a bunch of money he said was for a “luxury” barbershop. I wonder if that’s the issue. People give Nene shit but she’s not only his physical caretaker but the only breadwinner in the home. She’s taking care of Gregg and two adult sons
and probably paying for his Gregg’s medical treatment. That would be tough for anyone.

Cancer treatment is very expensive even with insurance. Everybody handles greif differently. It’s easy to say I would do it better when you are not the one experiencing it. She is not handling it well, but it’s an incredibly hard situation to be in.

Hoping the blessing of a huge family allows the children to be able to be allowed to spend and contribute what they desire.
I hope it can be a gift for Gregg, the children, and NeNe.
If selfishness can be put aside, it can be a gift no one will forget. Let’s hope.

As annoying as Nene is I do feel it for her. Gregg is facing his mortality at the moment and she needs to realise how hard it is for him. He will be snappy, he will be rude. From personal experience I know people in this situation take it out on the people closest to them. However, I can imagine that like Nene Gregg has a very vicious tongue, I remember all those seasons ago when his conversation to that DJ was leaked and he went on a rant about how he invested in Nene. I’m praying for them both and I agree with the above commenter and TT that Gregg has gotten them into some financial difficulties. That barbershop rumour has been going around for a while now and it is something that Nene would never admit to. It’s so sad. I really do feel it for the Leakes at the moment. Sucks all round.

I agree with you here. I’m not a Nene fan either, but I think there is more to what is going on with her and Gregg other than just being his caretaker. The letter was a bit deep. What was he apologizing for? And her reaction was telling to me. He did something that hurt her to her core. Something she didn’t want to discuss at all.

Just finished watching all three of the Tokyo episodes!

One thing I noticed that was quite apparent when compared to Tokyo for BH last year, is that Atlanta seemed to be on a pretty tight budget for filming.
Perhaps this is due to the difference in headcount of cast/crew and number of nights they stayed.

I had fun watching it anyway, but many of the locations they filmed at was not high end or expensive TBH, and I think they missed out on many interesting filming opportunities and locations because they strangely stuck to filming around the hotel.
A good example is the Karaoke scene. They filmed in a tiny room with no stage at a super average karaoke place inside a sketchy building with no views, when instead, they could have chosen to film at a internationally well-known karaoke room in Shibuya with great city light views and a mini neon stage, very Instagram famous.

Oh, and the last dinner was definitely not at the same restaurant as BH. Judging from how sake was served and the interior design etc it most definitely looks like a tourist spot (because I could never imagine a Japanese person willingly dining there). If only they had asked me to coordinate the filming locations!

Nevertheless, it was very fun to watch these colorful loud women of Atlanta go wild in a quiet, conservative city like Tokyo of all places! What a crazy combination, glad they had fun.

Haven’t you noticed that the BH cast trips are ALWAYS more luxurious? Not just Tokyo. They stay at super fancy hotels and partake in expensive activities. I could be wrong, but in my mind I think that is because the Beverly Hills women are so fabulously wealthy, and they live a particular lifestyle, so production has to provide trips fitting of their lifestyle. Kandi is the only truly rich one in rhoa, but she’s frugal, and everyone else has their little bit of money, but not Erika Jayne or Kyle Richards-type money.

Most of the BH women are wealthy and/or traveled. I always get the impression it pretty much takes a steam shovel to remove the RHOA cast from their hotel rooms where they seem pretty content to lay around, take selfies, Skype and order room service.

I think that whenever someone gets sick, divorced, jailed, abuses drugs… just all the struggles that life has. I think people here find it a safe place to vent because you make this place like home.

As a caretaker once myself. I have to ask. How the hell is she considered a caretaker when she’s in Tokyo, across the country for baby showers, etc..? When I was one, I didn’t have time to breathe.

I wish whoever that poor girl that Marla drove to kill herself’s family could see if they could press charges on her for some type of murder charge. I have no idea how long ago her crime was committed.

I wish Gregg the best and hopes he has people to help him.

I loved the Tokyo footage! This was a great trip and they explored a lot of the culture. I thought on this trip Tanya would display how she earned her peach. Supposedly she was supposed to reveal something so compelling that the producers made her a full-time housewife.

Yet, she’s not in the main cast. And she certainly hasn’t had a very interesting story so far. So she’s not really married to the man she calls her husband. That’s not all that interesting.

I wonder the same thing. The husband/not husband thing could be a storyline but it doesn’t really seem to be what would cause the buzz I was hearing about her.

Tanya also turned down the first contract she was offered and walked away. I feel like that would usually backfire, and for some reason they pursued her.

I mean she is smart, “married” to a well educated employed man, a bit of a fashionista and fairly civilized. She works for a company that has some positive impact on the community. She does charity work when cameras are not around. She would be a good friend for Kandi. HOW DOES SHE FIT IN WITH THE REST OF THESE BARBARIANS? I feel like there must be some dark secret looming or something that Bravo plans to exploit.

I understand getting frustrated and tired, but what I don’t understand is NeNe broadcasting it to the world. If I was sick and my significant other was on TV whining about taking care of me, I would find that such a betrayal and so disloyal. She even says she is used to being the one being taken care of–and it’s killing her that she has to be selfless! Keep it to yourself, girlfriend. Some people just have to be the center of attention all the time or they’re not happy. I believe NeNe is one of those people. I find her personality distasteful. She has a superiority complex for no reason!

She has a superiority complex because Bravo pays her ALMOST ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS PER EPISODE.

She’s just another manufactured monster by Bravo. It’s exploitative and won’t end well for her when the money runs out as she has no one around her shine a light of …well REALITY…into her life. Unlike Vicki Gunvalson who is a business woman who had managed her money well and didn’t really need her Bravo check and was in it soley for attention, Nene will not fare as well when the Bravo suits decide she is no longer lucrative.

Gregg probably wants morning surgery because it’s so much better physically and emotionally to wake up in the morning, have nothing to eat or drink and get the damn thing over with. I’ve had the cancer (I know I sound like Amber there) and I’ve had morning and afternoon surgeries. Afternoon is a lot harder because you end up really dehydrated. I wish him well and I hope Nene can remember that he is most probably terrified a lot of the time and that often presents as grumpy.
