Golden Globes Watch Party Starts Now!

Pop open the boxed wine and tip it! IT’S TIME FOR THE GLOBES!

Sadly, the E! Channel is the only one I can find doing red carpet coverage on television. Their Countdown to the Red Carpet starts at 1 PM Pacific/4 PM Eastern where the hosts and “experts” give us “pop culture” guide. If based on past years, this is where they show outfits from last year and try to guess what the stars will be wearing. Or if they are a stylist, what they would put on the star. (This always seems so pathetic to me. Like they couldn’t get hired.).

The actual E! Live from the Red Carpet starts at 3 PM Pacific/6 PM Eastern. I’m counting on the likes of Debra Messing to make the hosts uncomfortable again. (Last year Debra mentioned the news host, Cat Sadler, who quit because she found out her co-host made double what she did, even though she had around the same experience and name recognition. It was awesome. Guiliana looked so uncomfortable.)

The Golden Globes Facebook page will also be live streaming some coverage, and I’m sure there will be pictures of outfits on Instagram and Twitter. Pictures of outfits are the most difficult part of blogging it, especially with copyrighted photos. But if you see something amazing (amazingly good or amazingly bad) let us know in the comments. We all know how to work the Google machine. I’ll be reluctantly watching E!, missing Joan Rivers and Kelly Osbourne, and keeping an eye on social media. This is all if we don’t lose power – we’re getting a wind storm tonight in the Pacific Northwest, so I’m sending this off to Tamara before it hits! Wish me luck! ADMIN EDIT: ERICA DID INDEED LOSE POWER! I’LL KEEP YOU UPDATED! We’ll also see if the Hollywood Foreign Press’s impression that Andy and Sandra had chemistry enough to host together was a true one. I’m trying to keep an open mind. Also of note, there are two special awards tonight. Jeff Bridges is the 2019 Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient. After Oprah’s inspiring speech that made many suggest she run for president, the Dude has a hard act to follow. He shouldn’t even try. He probably won’t, because he’s chill like that. There is a new award starting this year, the Carol Burnett award for special achievement in television. The first recipient is… Carol Burnett. I love her and I’m looking forward to seeing who they pick to do her intro. Oh! They’ve also changed the title of Miss/Mr. Golden Globes to Golden Globes Ambassador. The role has always been filled by a movie star’s child. This year’s ambassador is Idris Elba’s daughter, who is only 16! She used to have aspirations to be an actress, but now is thinking more along the lines of director or some other job behind the camera. She is using her role to advocate for mental health in young people.

I’m also anxiously awaiting to see what Lady Gaga is going to wear. It is funny; people think of her as this ingenue, break out star. She’s been working hard for years. She already won a Golden Globe in acting for her role on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel. I don’t do horror, so I can’t compare. I can’t remember if they have people perform the best songs or not, but even if they don’t, keep an eye out for Dolly Parton and Annie Lennox! Both are nominees along with Gaga herself! (Yeah, other noteworthy people are nominated, but I don’t care what they wear. Linda Perry will probably wear something weird, but not in an interesting way. We’ll also have some representation from classic Hollywood if Michael Douglas, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda come!

What have you seen? What are you rooting for? Of course, I’m all over A Star is Born, but also rooting for Black Panther. Danai Gurira should be getting more recognition for her role as Okoye. I was drawn most to her character in it! Alan Arkin is fantastic in The Kominsky Method on Netflix, but the little Happy Days fan in me wants to hear Henry Winkler’s acceptance speech even though I’ve not seen Barry yet. I think Ms. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta will win, but it makes me sad for Glenn Close. See you in the comments, and have fun figuring out which ones drink too much!

For reference, here are the nominees.

Usually on a Awards show night, Bravo doesn’t show new programming at all. Tonight they are airing new episodes of RHOA, Married To Medicine and Dirty John.

    I find that very strange.

Tamara, do you think it’s because they see the trend of super poor ratings for awards shows these days and believe they can win the time slot? Or is it something much deeper? Curious for your take.

Is this going to be a real Awards show, where we can ogle the beautiful men and women and admire their clothes, or is it just another political hit show. I’ll watch until the first political speech, then I’m gone.

I tape these because I can’t take their political comments…. i like looking at the dresses and no pre show on NBC cuz the Bears game. E has a pretty lame one on. Let’s comment tomorrow on “who wore the best and worst”
I REALLY miss Joan Rivers. She was absolutely the best. Oh well…..

As said, I miss Joan Rivers for the red carpet and Fashion Police. Jeff Bridges is an odd dude in real life, so hope he says very little (and he speaks weird lately anyway). But so glad he’s getting the props he deserves- one of the finest actors consistently. I LOVE Carol B. I hope Glenn Close FINALLY gets her due here and at Oscars. The woman makes it look so effortless, her brilliance is not acknowledged. To this day, her work (and that movie) in Dangerous Liaisons never got it’s due, except for Michelle P. That is a virtuoso class in acting. I love GaGa but… and speaking of getting her due, Jodie Comer never gets love from these award shows. She steals every scene, and while Oh is excellent, Villanelle’s role requires greater range that she makes effortless. She’s exhilarating, psychotic and heartbreaking all at once. And Laura Linney deserved props for Ozark, and Julia Garner is another young actress who steals every scene with her multi-layered performance. I think Patricia Arquette was amazing but all those ladies killed. I hope Darren Criss is a lock for Versace. I was blown away how amazing he was. I love the Good Place. I finally watched Barry. While it’s very good, I don’t see why Winkler won previously. And no love for Haunting on Hill House, which is fantastic. All acting hit it out of the park, especially the actress who plays the mom. They should’ve gotten a nod at the SAG awards.

For some reason I read that the show was starting at 7 but it’s not starting until 8 and have to recap RHOA so that is an issue. My may try to further juggle the schedule so I can tape the whole damn thing. BTW there is a FOOTBALL GAME on right before which is STUPID so set an extra hour to record if you have room.

I’m slightly sad Gaga didn’t win… but I’m crying with Glenn right now. I can’t wait to see her movie.

    Shit… now I am SOBBING.

Law, I know TT doesn’t like links in her comments (or am I thinking of another site’s FAQs? Sorry, no dinner plus boxed wine makes for a mushy brain).

But do a few Googles about Don Shirley’s family and their response to this film. They are EXTREMELY upset. (Vulture and CinemaBlend both have articles)

The family said it was full of outright lies. The writer of the book was Tony’s son (Viggo Mortenson’s character). He wrote it based on stories his father told him. They did not consult any other source while making the movie, and did very little research on Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali’s character).

They portrayed him as an outsider in his family and his community. There was a scene in the trailer where Tony apparently introduces fried chicken to Don. “Fried chicken” of course being an example of how he isn’t tied even to his community’s food. His brother is still alive, and said of course he’d eaten fried chicken!

They also said that Shirley FIRED Tony soon after he was hired, for unprofessionalism (which apparently was shown in the film, but wasn’t a firing offense… I guess a black guy couldn’t be shown firing a white dude?)

Now, every bio-pic has to change some of the facts for the sake of clarity, time, etc. Walk the Line did to a degree, but both the Carter and Cash families were involved. It didn’t change the essence of the film.

But I guess it was so bad that Mahershala Ali literally called the Shirley family and apologized!!!

So for it to win over some of the others is kind of bullshit. I’m hoping and praying that this is a year that the Globes and Oscars don’t match up. I don’t even know if I should look to the BAFTAS, because the Brits experience with race and racism is different from ours.

Actually the Vanity Fair story says that the film made Shirley a lot more civilized than he was and that his friends think he would be tickled with the positive spin on his difficult personalty. They also quote lots of tape from Shirley himself.

It looks like a great movie.

Interesting. Thank you. I will say that the Medium and Vulture articles (I think it was those two) were just as compelling on the other side. It also doesn’t bode well for Farrelly that they “couldn’t find” the relatives, yet Ali didn’t have a problem finding their phone numbers to call and apologize… or that he felt compelled to apologize in the first place.

It is a great movie. And the son of Tony the Lip interviewed his dad and Dr Shirley as the basis. So he claims it’s straight from the two of them plus Dr’s friends who knew him well. Maybe there are some inconsistencies, but it sounds much more about money. They didn’t know about those family members so they weren’t a part of it -hence, they didn’t get any money. I’m sure being salty is partly at least due to that. And fun fact- the Viggo Mortenson character was the real life dude who played Carmine Luppertazzi on Sopranos. Wild.

Did anyone else see that Crissy Metz called Alison Brie a b***h on the red carpet? She didn’t realize her mike was still on. I’m team Crissy on this one, Alison always seems super put on and fake in any interview I’ve ever seen her in. That’s always been my impression anyway. I hope Crissy gives us the backstory.

Oh! She had Christian Seriano make her a dress, then had Entertainment Tonight do a huge segment on the making of the dress options he came up with – then picked a boring option from another designer!

Now, I and christian acknowledge that the picking a different one is all part of the process. Many nominees get different designers to offer up dresses, but they don’t do a whole ET thing beforehand! (She was stupid to pick the dress she did).

What fat chick picks ANYONE over Christian Seriano? And I liked the dress she picked for about ten seconds and then all I could look at was that one sleeve was a different size as the other. It looked like it was a sleeveless dress and at the last minute they decided to tack on scraps of fabric to cover her upper arms.

I need to clarify – this was LAST year.

He was totally gracious too when the press asked him about it. Said that is the name of the game with stars, that he designs options for many people during award season and not all are picked. Doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with how bad or good the design; sometimes it depends on how the actress is feeling that day or how she wanted to wear her hair or something. BUT, he did say that is why he was reluctant to do the shoot with Entertainment Tonight (It might have been Extra or E!, I can’t remember) I do remember that the dress she picked was BORING, and too much fabric.

Finally got through it all. I CRIED A LOT and not just because of the hosting issues. I saw 93 year old Dick Van Dyke walk out on stage under his own volition and I scream cried to the TV GET UP OFF YOUR ASSES FOR FUCKING DICK VAN DYKE PEOPLE! Then he read the telepromoter without glasses! I can barely read a stop sign without readers.

I didn’t understand lots of the nominations in certain categories. Is Atlanta a musical or a comedy?

And the supporting? Actriess category that the Mrs. Maisel girl won had some really poor nominees.

I think Regina won because that other movie had two actresses nominated and split the vote. I’m happy for Regina King though. I’m fine with her winning ALL THE THINGS.

Erica, did you see Bohemian Rhapsody?

I have not seen Bohemian Rhapsody. I will though, especially if it is nominated for an Oscar. I DO have a problem with its emotional truth though. Please note that I was 14 when Live Aid was on. July 1985, I am of the generation that this made an impact. Apparently the movie played with the emotional truth of events and said that Freddie knew of his HIV status before his Live Aid performance, when all other accounts stated that he did not know for another two years. This changes his motivations and the reasons why he just killed that performance and stole the show.

Have you seen Mary Poppins Returns, Tamara? Because DICK VAN DYKE was amazing. If you can find it on demand, see the 20/20 special on it too – the cast worships Mr. Van Dyke appropriately. He apparently at one point turned to Emily Blunt and starting singing Its a Jolly Holiday with Mary! I’d still be crying if I were her.

The categories ARE problematic at the GG. I trusted them last year re: Mrs. Maisel being in the comedy category. It certainly isn’t a traditional comedy AT ALL. I’ve binged all of season 1 and half of season 2. It isn’t even a half hour – and it is nothing like I thought it would be (which is why I love it.) I personally think it leans more towards drama, frankly, a drama about developing your art and passion.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody, it was excellent. I was happy they won since they have been trying to get this movie made for 10 years. Rami Malek totally deserved that award.

The movie presented the reason he killed that performance as his joy to be back with the band after their split. The movie focuses on the genesis of the band, how they made some of their hits and their relationships. They did present his diagnosis early, but the movie ends shortly after that performance. To leave it out would have been odd. I did not find it to be emotionally manipulative.

So funny. I was 14 when my brother brought home Night At The Opera. Immediate and permanent love for Queen music and especially genius Freddy Mercury. Not surprisingly, I loved the movie and thought it conveyed the spirit of the band and the times very well. Also noticing all the TV and radio ads that have been using Queen music in the past few months.

She was in an interview with two hosts who were announcing the arrival of Allison Brie and asked Crissy if she knew who she was and she was like Do I KNOW HER, of course I know her she’s a ba–” Allison has said that in response that she and Crissy know and love each other and that fake rumors will not come between them.

Congrats to Darren Criss! I DID watch the Versace mini-series, he was chilling as A. Cunanan. I am a longtime fan of Sandra Oh, and happy for her well-deserved Win.

This Is Us was robbed/overlooked AGAIN?? Really?!
Milo Ventimiglia & Sterling K. Brown are easily the BEST Actors on MY tv ? every week. WHAT Was the Hollywood Foreign Press watching? ?

I adore Dick Van Dyke and Carol Burnett, agree they are both TREASURES ??

I think Sandra and Andy should have just done a mature, respectful hosting job. If you are not a comedian, don’t pick the Globes as your debut for standup. The only funny thing was their intro of the This is Us cast regarding the tissues. It was witty and unexpected.

AGAIN, why do we need comedians as hosts? Let Jeff Bridges host, or Idris Elba, or Janae Monae… Actually, she would be fantastic. I don’t even remember why she was on stage all I remember was how stunning she was and how confident and well spoken. Let her do it like Oprah would.

I have seen it and loved it. Acting fabulous, music fabulous, story also very good. I don’t know if it was whitewashed – a lot was made of his relationship with his first girlfriend, which I believe to be absolutely true. What I got out of it was his homosexuality was not sensationalized for the movie, but it certainly was not ignored either. I really don’t think the movie was about that. It was more about the band and the music and his talent.

It would have been suicide to be an out activist in that era. He didn’t keep his sexuality under complete wraps – it was there in every movement, every performance, every nod and wink and innuendo. He was out as much as he could be in that era. He may not have even wanted a label… so many say he was gay, but when he came out to his girlfriend he came out as bi (she told him she thought he was gay. But he had relations with women after that.)

He didn’t downplay it in his private life. His bandmates saw both men and women leave his hotel rooms while on tour. They knew the men he dated. His family didn’t – but then their religion couldn’t have handled that.

I dont know how one could say they whitewashed his sexuality. They presented him learning and exploring his sexuality and some of his indiscriminate acts.
BUT the movie was NOT a biopic it was about the band, how they met,how the music came together and the fact that they broke up for awhile due to his behavior.
