Survivor 37 Finale: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

December 20, 2018 by The Lady Cocotte 43 Comments

By Survivor Guest Correspondent Cho

This is it y’all! The finale of Survivor David vs Goliath is here, and I’m so excited to see how things unfold. Will my predictions and analyses ring true? Let’s find out now!

Jabeni Strong

Literally everyone is up in the middle of the night looking for the newly hidden immunity idol. Angelina ends up finding a clue but LOSES it! She takes the ladder that she was instructed to dig up and ends up floundering around for far too long before meeting up with the others. For once, she sells them a sob story about how she fell and hurt herself and the others actually believe her. She cries on demand. Probably like she does when pulled over by cops. She plans on finding the idol later.

The challenge for reward and immunity is a physically demanding one that ends with a huge puzzle. Everyone gets to the puzzle with Alison and Nick really far behind. Everyone is pretty neck and neck and anyone can win despite Kara and Angelina leading. Nick comes from behind to win and chooses Angelina and Mike to eat spaghetti back at camp. He makes a remark about enjoying it with his “Jabeni crew” which is exactly what Davie was worried about when joining an alliance with them. Alison is in tears over having not been chosen and her name always being a target.

The reward happens to be taking place right where Angelina’s immunity idol is hidden. Angelina and Nick are pushing for Alison to leave, but Mike is thinking Davie would be a better target. Nick would prefer to not be the last David left. Angelina ends up telling her Jabeni alliance about the clue and enlists them for their help. Mike laments having to do any work as he CLENCHES his wine glass tightly. LOL This is a hilarious scene! Angelina ends up finding the idol as she screams Jabeni! She reminds us how women don’t typically find idols in Survivor, and her story comes full circle! Too bad she doesn’t really need any immunity as she’s probably a goat.

We proceed to have a tug of war between Alison and Davie. Angelina revels in behaving like a mobster to Alison and makes her cry. Mike and Kara would rather get rid of Davie who they think has played a much stronger game. They are thinking smart. Will Mike be able to convince Angelina to switch her vote?

Final 6 Tribal Council

We get to the meat of the debate tonight with Alison and Davie being the prime targets. Jeff reminds Alison of her bad blood with Angelina and how that could spell doom for her tonight. Angelina rubs it in Alison’s face that she could have voted her out the last few votes, so you never know how things shake out. Davie reminds us that as numbers dwindle, blindsides could make jurors bitter…

Jeff reveals the votes: Davie, Alison, Alison, Davie, Davie, and the last vote is for Davey who says they could have at least spelled his name right! LOL He also says whoever orchestrated his vote has his jury vote! I’m so sad, but Mike did that and has played an excellent last 3 rounds! He brought the remaining Goliaths together to get rid of Davie. In live time, Davie says more black people need to watch Survivor, and he’s not wrong! We learn that Davie was a last-minute cast. He’s so cute and so genuine I love him! He’s the winner we needed this season!

Jabeni Implodes

We get back from tribal council, and Nick is understandably pissed. He literally throws his torch to the ground and throws a temper tantrum. Angelina 100% blames Mike for the Alison vote while trying to calm Nick down, but Nick is ready to fully blow Mike’s game up and doesn’t trust his Jabeni alliance. He resents the fact that Mike has been controlling the last several votes. That’s called playing the game aggressively, Nick. Alison and Kara call him a childish little boy for his temper tantrums, but wasn’t Alison just whining about her state in the game not just days ago? Mike says that he might have to consider taking Nick out at the next tribal council if he tries to blow his game up.

Alison Continues To Struggle In The Game

The immunity challenge is one of those challenges where you have to transfer water into a small hole in order to get a key. Alison is in the early lead and has already reached the puzzle. Nick ends up catching up to Alison and then beating her in the puzzle to win his second immunity in a row!! I’m sure Alison is crushed.

Villains vs Villains: Angelina

Angelina has decided that she wants to create a fake dramatic situation to make herself look better in front of the jury. She wants Kara and Alison to vote for her so she can play her immunity idol to look good. This makes no sense. Mike also has the same feelings as everyone at home by saying there is no place for these theatrics. Angelina is actually mean-spirited in her attempts to make Alison’s boot sting.

Mike proceeds to tell Kara about Angelina’s stupid plot, which I think is even more stupid. WHY DOES EVERYONE TELL KARA EVERYTHING?! He then goes on about how Angelina came onto Survivor to be a diabolical villain and that there should be a Survivor season called Villains vs Villains: Angelina. LOL While this is super hilarious, he digs his own grave as Kara ponders voting out Mike instead of Alison. She naturally does exactly what Mike told her not to do: tell Alison, and they hatch a plot to take Mike out. Kara is making money moves right now, and once again, Nick can’t really take credit for this vote either.

Nick ponders about how big of a threat Mike is in terms of the jury. He realizes that Mike could even beat him in a jury vote. Nick is happy to feel like the power is in his hands at such a pivotal time in the game. He and Kara debate on who is the bigger jury threat between alison and Mike and vow to vote together. Alison finds the fake idol that angelina made, and everyone does fake reactions to a ridiculous situation. Angelina revels in her mean-girlness. Ironically, this stunt of hers will only make her look WORSE in front of the jury.

Does Mike Have This In The Bag

Final 5 Tribal Council

Davie walks in with a floral shirt and red pants looking like a WHOLE SNACK! We get an audible “dayum!” from Angelina as she watches him walk in. Most of the conversation revolves around jury perception. Alison reminds us that she’s been a target but then exposes Mike as a bigger threat. Mike accuses Alison of having no dignity on the way out the door, and I audibly gasp at Mike’s sheer fucking hypocrisy. Does he honestly expect her to lay down and just be voted off?! I’m disappointed in Mike’s sour reaction to Alison coming for his neck. Jeff points out that Alison has fought with a lot of people.

It’s time to vote. Mike gives a really snarky vote against Alison. His sudden attitude towards Alison is pretty disgusting I must admit! Kara votes for a mystery person saying she can’t give Angelina the satisfaction of playing her idol correctly. Alison plays her fake idol, and then Angelina plays her real one. Angelina haughtily says she has the votes against Alison, but she wants to guarantee her spot. The jury rolls their eyes. Jeff reads the votes. Mike, Alison, Alison, and Alison is finally voted out.

The Stupid Final 4 Immunity Twist

I already have anxiety looking at the last final immunity challenge. It’s the infamous one where you have to drop a ball down a shoot and you must catch it before it falls. Eventually more balls are added to the winding shoots. This challenge is so tense I can’t take it. It’s Nick vs Kara, and they both look strong. Nick ends up winning his third immunity in the row, and he’s in the final 3! Kara is in tears at failing in the challenge. Nick now has the choice to bring one person to the end with him, facing the other two to a fire-making challenge.

It doesn’t make sense why Nick (or anyone else that could have won) wouldn’t just take Angelina to the end, but let’s sit here and waste time complicating an easy decision. Ironically, the final David has control over the last 3 Goliaths. They each give pitches saying they won’t win. Nick decides to be open about his decision and tells Mike and Kara that he is bringing Angelina to the end.

Kara begins practicing for the fire making challenge and let’s us know that everyone has always underestimated her performance. Mike, on the other hand is very anxious about making fire and says it has been his biggest nightmare. He admits that he’s afraid of being afraid and needs to summon his inner goliath in order to come out ahead. Both he and Kara succeed in their practice fires.

Final 4 Fire-Making Tribal Council

Alison looks super cute as she struts in on the jury. Nick makes it official on bringing Angelina to the final 3. Kara says it could be a great competition while Mike is visibly uncomfortable. I’m rooting  for Mike, because I think he’s played a better game than Kara. This challenge is so stupid and really doesn’t give the Final Immunity winner the option to choose who he brings to the end with him. I’m still bitter. Let me know in the comments your thoughts on this twist that is here to stay. Anyway, Mike gets a steady fire and is trying to keep the base going. Kara gets fire a few times but it goes out. Mike ends up beating Kara leaving us with a Jabeni Final 3. Angelina has tears in her eyes seeing Kara leave.

Sappy Self Reflections & The Final 3 Breakfast

Angelina tears up about how she’s learned she doesn’t have to be polished and perfect all the time, and that her flaws are ok too. She’s learned so much about herself and is so happy to have made it far. Nick is proud of the game he played and will not hold back in letting everyone know that he was a true underdog. He talks about being the only kid in law school who grew up in a trailer. The breakfast looks really yummy! Mike says he definitely pushed himself in the game and has enjoyed being a storyteller of the experience he had 39 days. He says his social game has been stellar, and he will take credit for advising the players who drove the game.

THE FINAL TRIBAL COUNCIL

Angelina Is Always Working An Angle

Outwit:

Nick says he outwitted by building many 1-on-1 alliances with nicknames which allowed him to build connections. He says his big move was against John. He retorts that Nick’s game tapered out after that point, and he wants to know what he did after that point. Nick stumbles with his answer by admitting that he was blindsided many times afterward.

Angelina jumps in to defend her relationships and how her social game has adapted after she was in the doghouse. Despite being in scapegoat position with both Goliaths and Davids after the merge hit, she was able to evolve her game and make inroads with players like Nick, Carl and Mike that were able to take her deeper into the game.

Mike lists all of the final 2 deals he had, and Gabby says it was transparent. Alison then calls Mike out on how biting his comments have been. We are reminded about Mike’s biting words towards Alison and how he regrets those nasty comments. He admits that he felt really insecure throughout the game.

Gabby gives props to Angelina for being the last woman and talks about on how misogyny could negatively affect her chances. Good point! We do typically view assertive women in a negative light, especially when compared to men who behave in similar fashion. Angelina admits that she sounds “interviewy” and guarded because of this but can be really authentic in 1-on-1s.

Outplay:

Davie wants Angelina to explain why she’s a David and Nick why he’s a Goliath. She says she was fearful of so many elements of the game such as challenges and surviving. She goes on to explain in much dramatic detail how she dug to hell and back for a ladder then climbed Mount Everest to find the immunity idol. Davie realizes that’s where her fake tears came from! Alison interjects to ask why Angelina tried to embarrass her with the fake idol and Angelina lies.

Nick says that his Goliath came out with winning 3 immunities in a row. He also talks about his natural ability to connect with people and how that helped him with information.

Its Taken me 14 episodes to realize how cute Nick is

Outlast:

Angelina reflects on being a military wife and knowing how tough she could be. She’s happy she was able to pick herself up in the game and place herself back in a position of strength and triumph. Nick says he went through many ups and downs similarly to Angelina. He lets us know why he’s a lawyer in real life and tells us the story about fighting for drug-addicted people to get help instead of going to jail after the overdose of his mother. He reminds us that he was the biggest underdog in the game. Mike tells us his emotional journey of finding out what he stands for in the game. He cries and says that it’s not about the pot of gold but the rainbow at the end.

The Final Vote

This is gonna be a close one between Mike and Nick, and I honestly have no idea who will win but would genuinely be happy with either of them. It’s time to vote. John votes for Nick to win. Dan trips as he goes to vote. I hate him. Gabby cries over her vote while Davie prays. They are all so ridiculous. LOL Christian votes for Mike. Fast forward to the vote reveal in LA. Looking at the entire cast, is it bad that the biggest thing on my mind is NATALIE!?

Anyway, back to the vote: Nick, Mike, Mike, Mike, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick and the winner is NICK our last remaining David! Christian, Alison and Kara voted for Mike while the rest voted Nick. This is the ending the producers wanted! Are you happy with how things ended up with our hero trumphing against the Goliaths?! And are you excited about the next season?! Thank you for your comments and support all season. I really appreciate you all. Im glad it was a David. There was a time a couple weeks ago when I was over Nick and was rooting for Davie. I don’t really care for Mike. How they could let him get that far in the game is surprising to me.
I cannot wait for next season, the best show on television.

Thanks for your recaps Cho 🙂

Mike was let that far, because his social game was pretty impressive. Everyone seemed to value his opinion and he floated where he needed to. I am happy for story telling purposes that Nick won!

We have a while to go before the next season. It should be a doozy! We will stay in contact I’m sure!

Cho what are your thoughts on Natalie saying she was unfairly edited?

I think it’s silly. Listen, Natalie isn’t an awful person and neither is Angelina. The only behavior exhibited this season that crosses into “bad human” zone was Jeremy’s nasty allegations against Angelina earlier in the season. That being said, Natalie simply needed to own her edit. Yes, it’s an edit. She fit the bill for a great villain. She was socially deaf. It is what it is.

It does kind of hurt me to see how visibly hurt she was at the reunion. Nobody wants to get their dream chance to go on Survivor then feel bad about even watching the episodes. I do have compassion, but she needs to own her behavior and the way she made those around her feel.

I was amazed at Angela’s lack of self awareness throughout the entire final episode. She never thought she was a goat… but that’s all she was, and it was so anticlimactic that she found the final idol because she was the one player that didn’t need it. Happy for Nick because I think he is so likable. That said, I think Mike played a far more consistently strategic game but I don’t think he had the likability factor. Davie should have won – all around strong player – smart, likable and strategic.

I think she actually did have some self-awareness about her position in the game. The whole reason for her making the fake idol was because she planned on going to the end with Nick and Mike and felt like she wouldn’t stand a chance against their resumes.

I also found the irony of her finding the idol (upon Mount Everest where she risked her life) to be really funny. Mike was definitely an all around better player than Nick, but I’m totally happy with the outcome. Davie was a great player too and much more likable, but there is a bit of blame to be shared among all the Davids for the Carl/Gabby/Christian boots: all boots that made Davie’s game weaker in the long term as he didn’t have the relationships with the Goliaths that would keep him deep into the game…

      THANK YOU!

Natalie’s reaction was BS though I do have sincere sympathy for her feelings. She’s right: her back was up against the wall instantly and she had to fight every tribal council. It doesn’t’ excuse the bossy attitude she had around camp that made people uncomfortable.

    Great recap, Cho!
Natalie is unable to accept who she was on Survivor. Even if it’s right there on film. She’s something else!
Best line of the night, Davie to Angelina regarding #rice: “The whole point of doing a selfless act is to be selfless.”
Glad a David won. Was hoping for Davie, but am happy it was Nick after Davie was booted.
Mike with his wine glass while Angelina needed help finding the idol was hilarious!
Can’t believe three jury members bought into Mike’s story. I really think the tears and rainbows speech locked in Christian’s vote, judging from the response on Christian’s face.
And Alison voting for Mike after he was so cruel to her at her booting?
And Kara voting for Mike, even though she knew he was lazy and didn’t need the money?
I’m glad the rest of the Jury made the correct decision in choosing Nick.
The kid has a rough past, devoting his life to helping others in his home town.
Hell yes, Good on ya, Nick!

So many hilarious moments throughout the finale. I also couldn’t help but LOL when Mike was drinking wine while helping Angelina find the idol. She’s so dramatic I love it. She just plays the game really hard, but she’s not a great actress at all. People see through it. Can’t fault her for trying though. You’re supposed to fool the others.

Nick will definitely use the money in a good way!

Natalie was great. Pure Natalie. Wish she’d lasted longer on the show.

Did anyone else see that tattoo on someone’s arm (I think it was a woman) during the live show? I could barely listen bc I was too focused on it. It looked like a cat in a jacket or something like that.

Angelina needs to come back. She was the character I enjoyed most watching this season. She’s just so dramatic. And despite her playing really hard, everyone usually sees through her antics! lol

Natalie needed to survive longer. Natalia too. Both really dysfunctional players.

That was LYRSA and the cat is wearing the infamous JACKET that Angelina tried to take! LOL I assume Lyrsa thought it was really funny so she decided to cover a tattoo to immortalize #JacketGate

What a killer season, and I looooved your recaps!!!!! Somebody explain to me why Nick didn’t team up with Alison and Kara to vote out Mike? I really don’t care for Mike, but I begrudgingly had to admit that he played a better game than Nick. However, Nick was such an underdog and gave his all, I was so grateful he won. Especially since Davie, who is a WHOLE SNACK as you stated, couldn’t win. Love Davie and he needs to come back, and how adorable and hot was he at the reunion? Yum.

Natalie looked fabulous. Not sure how she could claim to be a victim of editing but I get the feeling that self awareness isn’t her strong suit. I loved seeing the scene of Angelina asking for the coat again though. That is a classic. “Natalie? … Natalie?”

There may be an argument for institutional sexism in the game of Survivor, but Angelina is not the one to make it. Women of all stripes and personality types have won this game. It really depends on the dynamic of the season you’re on. Angelina’s antics were not harshly judged because she’s a woman – neither were Natalie’s for that matter. Angelina was petty and obnoxious, her gender has no bearing on it.

Alison was one of the strangest character processions I’ve ever seen. She was on the chopping block for so long and through luck managed to remain. I think it made her feel like a threat, whereas I think she was just an easy boot that kept getting passed over.

Can’t wait til next season and have a wonderful holiday Cho and my fellow Survivor watchers!! These posts really made the episodes come full circle for me! Great job Cho. And I’m disappointed we didn’t get to see Alec’s booty one last time.

Thank you so much for your readership this season. I appreciate you beyond words! I think that when it came between Alison and Mike, people just really thought Alison was more threatening in front of a jury. And judging by the votes Mike got, I think they were right to believe such.

Well, I think we somewhat disagree about Angelina. I really do believe that if Angelina were a male, she would not have received the rampant and severe amount of criticism she did. Yes, she was obnoxious. Yes, she was petty. And yes, she played a horrible social game for the most part. But nothing she did was worthy of the severe hate she’s gotten. I think the point I’m trying to make is that there seems to be a different severity of love/hate when it comes to certain genders.

Let’s take even Russel Hantz for example: someone who arguably had a very similar outlook on how to play the game. The only difference was that he was GOOD at deceiving people in his original season where as Angelina was horrible at actually deceiving people. Russel received hate, but he also got a lot of praise for “playing the game hard”. Why is it that people who are saying that about Angelina are a vocal minority? If Angelina deserves any criticism, it should be because she wasn’t successful at deceit, not because she’s some horrible human being… because she’s not.

Sorry for the novel. The gender card is only being brought up because of disparities like the above, and idk why I’m so passionate about it. LOL MY APOLOGIES!

In my next post, I’ll explain why we didn’t get to see Alec’s booty! 🙂

That’s a good point about the gender differences. My first thought when comparing Angelina’s behavior was Russell. I just hated Russell from the start though, and even though Angelina can be annoying, she’s not really a ‘villain’ to me – and I really think she was a great character. But I see what you mean about how she may have been received differently if she were a man playing that hard. The fake idol to embarrass Allison was just petty as hell – I loved it!

I think my all time favorite player was Parvati. She was slick… Angelina was just a little more obvious.

Can’t wait to get a whole post about Alec and his booty! Have a great holiday Cho!

Angelina was definitely mean-spirited in her attack of Alison, but there was a healthy amount of her also just trying to pad her resume for the jury. And she definitely was obnoxious. #JacketGate was definitely a villain move. She deserves the title imo. Russel was mean and intentionally nasty through and through. But to this day, some people make excuses for his behavior and say he’s just playing the game. Angelina didn’t get that same reception.

Parvati is sooooooo good! Now that’s a villain that knows how to persuade people. I love her so much too! I think she has a baby.

My apologies for having not made an additional post… I took my holiday break a bit too seriously and cut myself off from streaming, blogging and everything else related to “work”.

Alec – he allegedly broke his NDA by posting a photo of him and Kara. People are saying he received no prize money whatsoever due to breaking that clause in his contract. He’s even liable to be sued, but I doubt CBS would take it that far. Alec really is a stupid frat boy server surfer who knows no better and has no regard for rules.

Jeremy – this one is still unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. His relationship with CBS was definitely strained on two fronts: 1) is the way he handled post show interviews in relation to Angelina. Angelina was the star of the show this season, and CBS love love LOVED her. So to have Jeremy maligning her the way they did upset them. BTW, he was in LA and hanging out with Angelina. I have the receipts. 2) He allegedly LEFT ponderosa early which would also be a break from the contract that they all sign. Jeremy should be smarter than this as an attorney himself. I’m not sure what other fallout there is.

This has been one of my favorite Seasons in YEARS! And I’m really not sure why, lol. Maybe ‘cuz my guy I picked on the beach WON the million??? 🙂 He reminds me of the main character in that Grisham series?! GREAT cast and recaps so much fun – thanks Cho! I mainly read along as all the points and comments had already covered everything by the time I got here.

Lost respect for Christian with his Mike vote. Pure jealousy. And Alison too, really? THAT’S when she truly lost all dignity.

Looks like some kind of exile coming up next Season. Not a fan of that but love Survivor and Jeff’s dimples no matter the premise.

I’d love to read a tie up loose ends recap Cho – thanks again!

Cho I’m sorry I haven’t commented for awhile but my friend died late August and since then I can’t stop thinking where is he? Where did he go? Other than my Grandparents no one I’ve KNOWN has died and it’s tripping me out.
Ok, so back to you, one thing that (I initially take/read/see things literally) confused me was at the end of ur post it screams in big letters No Spoilers in the Comments, and that made me not want to comment bc what I would say is stuff that had been shown already but, ugh idk does that make sense?
    Anyway thank u so much

I’m so sorry for your lost but I’m happy that you have since been able to catch up and enjoy the season. Thank you so much for your support.

The no spoilers tag at the bottom is just for people who know what happens later during the season. So if you are privy to spoilers of who wins, then you should talk about that in the episode 1 comment section…or any of them until the finale! Does that make sense?

Thanks so much for the recaps! Love to read and comment the show
So, for me, Christian was a great character but not a good player. He was saved when the Davis protected him, if not, he didn’t even try to save his ass

    This was a Davie-Nick season!

Have u realized these last 2 seasons 2 girls got to the final and zero votes each? (Well deserved, but it is still kind of curious strong, straregic women are making it to the final

I really believe NataliA (please no more Natalies who even blame the editing) would have been a strong player and Bi too. Too bad she had to leave

Alec & John are ‘thank u, next’ for survivor? That is why they didn’t attend the reunion?
And Jeff’s face, wasn’t it too tight…and shinny? Botox much?(glup!)

What r your thoughts about having comebacks next season? I’m really not into it..it is like Big Brother, either u do a season with comebacks or bring new blood to meet newbies!

    Best!

Thanks for your comments and sorry for the late response. I took my holiday break far too seriously! LOL

I love returnee seasons, but I don’t like it when there’s only a mix. So this next season will only have 4 returnees. I want all or nothing. Refer to a reply above for what happened with Alec and Jeremy not being invited to the reunion.

And why this obsession with taking Alison out as if she were the player to bear? I really wouldn’t see anyone voting for her over Mike and Nick. Maybe over Angelina. Well, for sure over Angelina

And do you think they portray women unfairly in the show? I really never thought about it. Was Gabby kind of accusing the show?

    Merry Christmas!

I also didn’t understand the strong need to take out Allison. What did she do that would get her final votes for a million? She was strong physically but that’s it right? ?‍♂️

I didn’t notice Alec or John missing. I saw them both post about going to the reunion.

Totally! It seemed like they thought well she’s a Dr so she’ll get all the votes, cuz other than that she was no diff from Kara or Angelina

My point too. Alison would only get votes vs Angelina.
… Well, everybody but Natalie would get votes vs Angelina ?

But they definitely weren’t there. Go back and pause the screen for a receipt. I explain why they were missing in a reply here in the comment section. Just search their name!

I think women are generally portrayed poorly, but it has gotten better. It’s not a Survivor specific issue. It’s a societal one. IN MY OPINION. I think they portrayed Angelina pretty accurately. The REACTION to her edit is what seems a bit sexist to me in undertone. Emphasis on undertone.
