I meant to do a discussion post Friday but you may have noticed there are a lot of things going on in the world. I’ve been watching way too much news and still trying to get to those pesky dishes. So I’m going to give you a quick rundown here.
I did take a time out very late Friday night to watch Carson and Thom’s show. I really like it. The reason I like it is not for the designs. It’s Carson. He’s hysterical with his quick, witty, one liners. Carson and Thom are a funny duo and that is what carries the show. I don’t remember a lot about the episode other than how much I hated the final design on the big house. Especially the dining room chairs. They were hideous. I don’t mind the mismatched chairs in general, but there are some very specific rules. Mostly, they can’t all be different styles and shapes. There needs to be some sort of common theme. In this case it looks like Thom just went to six different garage sales and bought a $5 chair. This is no Jeff Lewis Designs makeover. I’m not a huge fan of modern design, but Jeff’s designs are all stunning in the end. I could be really happy living in the homes he makes over. If Thom’s makeover was what I was expected to live with, I would have cried.
I either didn’t tape the second episode of Buying Blind or had it on very late at night while I was googling for news or catching up on emails. Either way I don’t remember it. That is the least interesting of the shows to me. It’s very formulaic. But people a house that they hate, fix it up, freak out about the budget and they love it in the end. I like it fine, and it fits nicely with the other two shows, it’s just the kind of show that runs in the background while tidy up the living room or clean out your downloads files.
Sweet Home is sort of a spin-off from a show called Sweet Home Oklahoma. A lot of people liked that show and a few of the people from that show are on it but if focuses on one interior designer. I loved what she did with the judge’s house. There is just the right amount of family and friends being silly. This week Jennifer designed the interior for a brand new office space. She also does a child’s bedroom. I love all of her designs.
So what do you think about Bravo’s new Friday night line up?
I like ‘Buying It Blind’ and ‘Sweet Home’ but I can’t take Carson on ‘Get A Room’ I GET IT, they are gay and I could care less, but I don’t need to be reminded of that fact with some kind of sexual joke or innuendo with every other sentence coming out of Carson’s mouth. I think even Thom is getting annoyed by it. The e Sweet Home show reminds me a lot of Flipping Out but better because Jennifer isn’t afraid to use a little color in her designs. With Jeff all you basically get is 50 shades of gray & white
Clearly you are one of the few straight men on this site. 🙂 I do agree about Jennifer though. I love how her designs are also very Oklahoma without being country.
I’m with Mike on this one. I love a good makeover show and I do like Carson but man do I find him annoying on Get a Room. So much so, I can’t even watch the show. He just needs to turn down the flame a bit. Buying It Blind is the Property Bros show without the Property Bros. My favorite of the three is Sweet Home. I loved the friendship of Jennifer and Pumps on the other show so Im glad they include her on this one. I love every design I’ve seen of Jennifer’s so far. The BiB people have done good work, but in all honesty I wasn’t a fan of Thom & Carsons work on the shows I seen.
People change their personalities and play up for reality tv. I had a reality show film in one of my shops. (Don’t know if the footage was ever used. It was a show about hair cutting or something) Anyway the woman acted all ghetto, crazy and uneducated. But as soon as the cameras were off her personality completely changed. She was educated, had an amazing vocabulary and knew what she was talking about. Then the cameras came on and she was pointing at a wood table with some natural holes in it and says “what are those, bullet holes. This place is crazy.” Back and forth she switched. But she gave the viewers what they wanted an overblown stereotype.
I’m not surprised by this. Porsha is a whole nuther person on Dish Nation. She’s not a rocket scientist there either but she is very good at her job.
I second you on Jeff and the Fifty Shades of Grey and white. Ha Siri capitalized Fifty Shades of Grey…
I would love a Jeff Louis house except sometimes his design a little cold/minimalistic and could use more color for my taste. But as I get older, I find I’m drawn more towards minimalism than I used to be. Less clutter, the better for wall decor, on counters, or extravagant lighting.
And because Jeff is a perfectionist, I would love to hire him to do design/project management in any house I built as he wouldn’t take any shit from builders/contractors. I bought a new house six months ago and it looks like a high school shop class built it. Seriously, I’ve already repainted rooms myself, hallways and staircases and window trim because paint was bubbling up and they kept jacking it up. So much for “home waranty.” Apparently, they think it’s ok to paint over dust piles and expect the paint to stick and it’s fine.
I really like Jen’s style on Sweet Home with many textures, uses of wood/metal/colors. But I’ve noticed a few of her designs (from her website, small looks from the show) might be a little borderline busy. I think her design is more my jam.
Love Carson and Thom’s playing off one another. I am with you on that dining room TT. The living room was chic and elegant but that dining room, woof, the wallpaper was overwhelming without the fabrics and accessories to break it up. Poor Ehud kept saying he wanted the eyes to be able to rest in the dining room but ain’t no eyes resting on those busy walls. The table and chairs were a miss. He needed some dark elements to ground that space. My MIL has two different types of chairs in her dining room but it is done right and lovely. She is a retired designer with an exquisite eye and taste. Love Jennifer Welch’s design sensibility but I do miss the old show. I laughed out loud on every episode. I enjoyed watching women friends who were not messy itches like the RHOWherever.
Can also live with Jeff Lewis designs any time. Not going to watch Buying It Blind or whatever it’s called. Saw a little bit of an episode & didn’t watch to end. Maybe I missed something. Sweet Home…OK, miss Sweet Home Oklahoma. Liked that. Thom & Carson, will watch. Like that they do projects that are expensive & then just a few thousand. There’s a tone of sincerity in this show. Like.
LOVE Carson so much and their witty repartee!! You really have to pay attention because his “bon mots” are easily missed sometimes. I don’t watch for the renovation so much but love to see any redo. Buying it Blind only saw once it was ok. BTW-What happened to DBT? Gone forever I can only hope!!
They have a full season in the can that has been finished forever. They will probably air it eventually but I am hopeful that is the last one.
I like watching Thom and Carson but their style is definitely not mine. Buying It Blind has been good for the first two episodes but if they use the exact same formula every time it will get stale pretty fast. I love Sweet Home. Love Jennifer’s designs and her explanations of why she is doing what she is doing. I appreciate sassy, witty women and she and Pumps have it in spades. I do miss LeeAnne (?) from the first series. I thought they were all ride or die forever.
I agree DebH that Buying it Blind will get stale pretty quick. I find myself fast forwarding through a good bit of it and wish it was only a 1/2 hour show. Haven’t watched Thom and Carson’s show. I, too, love Jennifer’s designs and loved Sweet Home Oklahoma. I think the new show is really good, it’s one of my new favorites. Happy Pumps is on it (wish she was on a bit more though), and I miss Lee.
I find I feel the same way about most HGTV hour long shows. Used to like Love It or List It, Property Brothers, and Fixer Upper but after a season or two the formula wears thin. OTOH, I can watch House Hunters or Bahama Life for years and the half hour format works really well.
Sweet Home is really great because the designs are usually very good and the humor always cracks me up. I need a Tubbers to be my spirit guide/therapy dog!!!
Exactly! I quit watching Love It or List It awhile back but have started watching it again. Haven’t watched Property Brothers in a good bit either. Like you, House Hunters (especially the International one) and the beachy ones (Bahama & Hawaii Life) are also favs of mine.
I love Jennifer’s asst, Alex – she is a trip, so ditzy. Pumps is downright hilarious. I even like Josh even though I know if I had one of him in my life, he’d drive me absolutely nuts. I commend him on his sobriety though.Tubbers is too darn cute!
I love the new lineup! So glad to have the Oklahoma women back and I love seeing Jennifer’s designs and process. Also enjoying Carson and Thom. Who is the woman who works with them? She’s been on TV before. She has light brown hair, usually pulled back in a ponytail, and you see her hanging things up behind Carson. Was she on While You Were Out?
I’ve also caught a tiny bit of a new makeover show called 100% Hotter that is on in the mornings on Bravo, but it’s not available On Demand. It’s pretty good. It’s like What Not To Wear, but with less focus on the clothes.
I’m just glad to have shows with less screeching. It’s nice to have two HGTV options. When I get tired of the Housewives, I’ve been switching to HGTV, so this seems like a good move by Bravo because we all seem to be getting a bit tired of the Housewives. It’s those all cast dinner fights that are killing them.
I’d like us all to find some better programming off of Bravo once the housewives crap finally comes to a merciful end.
From wiki—Leslie Segrete is an American designer, seamstress, carpenter, and television personality. She is best known for her work on the TLC show While You Were Out.
Loving Sweet Home, & Carson & Thom, could definitely do without Buying it blind! I find myself fwd to the results. Jennifer’s design esthetic is so on point, and love the friendship with Pumps. If Bravo exec’s are listening, more programming like this!
That 100% Hotter show is on Netflix. I initially enjoyed it but it wears thin after a few episodes.
I Love Carson and Thom (yes I have said this before on here 🙂
Off topic, TT, any word on a Castaways 2nd season? That was a GREAT show and uplifting without being schmaltzy.
I am loving Carson and Thom. So refreshing to watch a Bravo show without constant hysterical screeching and the inability to let anything go!!. I do think Carson is playing the “designing newbie” a bit too much. He is the fashion guy, and understands fabrics, colors, contrast and interest.
The best part to me, especially on a Bravo show, is people who are actually friends, can give each other little bit of shit and still behave like decent adults to one another.
I also appreciated the lesson on how Carson &Thom were not allowed to touch Sara due to her religious beliefs. Those two trying to remember and be respectful was funny, touching and educational.
Agree with others that the wallpaper was hideous! The gym makeover was good too The dividers made with plastic roofing was clever.
Please keep covering this show! Its fast becoming the only show on Bravo that I can tolerate. Love me some Married to Medicine, but that show has ramped up the screeching this season and getting tired of it.
Thanks for the recaps, TT.
Love Jennifer’s friend, Pumps, from “Sweet Home”.
She reminds me of Kat from “Below Deck” Seasons 1 & 2.
I find her voice and facial features very similar to Kat’s.
Love little Tubbers, the French Bulldog. Adorable! He’s the star of the show!
Great Designs.
Bravo’s home shows I love. They are all good and give viewers a break from all the drama froth other shows on the Network. Love Carson. I am hoping they will add more and possibly more cooking shows. Oh, I did like the short reality show, Welcome to Waverly.
My Mom was the pastor of that church they showed in Waverly around 20 years ago so I watched all four episodes. I was really happy with the way everything was portrayed. There were a few bad apples with closed minds but mostly it was a great example of how people can find things in common no matter how different they may be. Because there wasn’t a huge amount of conflict I doubt they will make any more episodes. 😉
Love the women’s relationships on Sweet Home Oklahoma.
Love the uptempo feel to this show
More of this please
Tubbers xxxxxx
…and Carson &Thom anytime, always good for a laugh even if the design is “iffy”
I like the play btw Carson and Thom–it’s so nice to see something that isn’t so politically correct and people who can make fun of themselves.
I love the Get a Room show, especially Thom. I think he is so cute and he genuinely finds Carson super funny. I liked the dining room – after reading the comments, I am questioning my taste. I just really like the show, it makes me laugh and feel good. I wish I was younger, cuter, not married, and Thom wasn’t gay, I think he is so cute and nice.
Me too! I didn’t think I was going to when I saw it was small tiled squares but I did
Carson cracks me up, even during this dark week.
But what made me laugh hardest was when he went up to the chandelier at Sara and Ehud’s and pulled off those little doodoo shades because it looked better without them. It did, but he LOVED the ones he put on the chandelier at the Crystal Ball Room in Episode 1 that Tamara and I hated and those conceits were even more fugly than at Sara’s.
I like the wallpaper — but not on every wall. Hated those two white and gray prints in the living room. They look like the throwaways you find in a ready-made frame. I think they missed an opportunity in the Shabbat Room. Instead of wallpaper on every wall, they could have gathered and scanned family photos of all generations, converted all to B&W prints (for unity) and made a TASTEFUL photo gallery wall.
Ehud finding his voice in the lighting store was touching. I am uncomfortable going into a gym being overweight, going in as a trans person … I can’t even imagine. Sweet how they paid (or got comped) for the stuff for Lucas.
I am loving Friday nights now. I come home, put on my jammies, pour some wine, and relax while watching Carson and Thom shop and decorate. It’s quite soothing and takes the edge off of the week.
I was on board with the dining room wallpaper for Ehud and Sara, until I saw that the panels were super tiny. I think with that pattern it would have looked so much better if each panel was huge and covered most of the wall so that the pattern would look like a giant wave. I’m not buying that they couldn’t find a 12-foot table. That one missed the mark for me. The two starburst chandliers were stunning though. For some reason with those two rooms I really loved all the pieces individually, but yet for some reason when put all together it looked odd.
Get A Room With Carson Thom
312,000 viewers (-1.6% from last episode)
0.05 18-49 demographic (-16.7% from last episode)
Buying It Blind
351,000 viewers (+38.7% from last episode)
0.08 18-49 demographic (+33.3% from last episode)
Sweet Home
254,000 viewers (+27.0% from last episode)
0.06 18-49 demographic (+20.0% even from last episode)
It looks like nobody agrees with us. They like Buying It Blind he best ? And Sweet Home the least? And generally no on is watching any of it?
Good tea. I thought Get a Room would be leading, then Sweet Home a strong second. Totally guessing but I figure on a network like Bravo, they give them 3-5 episodes before they call it a pass/fail, season in the can or not. Hey, maybe they don’t care at all about the numbers. With it being on Friday night, I can’t imagine expectations are too high? I’m talking out my ass here.
I would agree with you except that we had a REALLY good show, Tour Group, a couple of years ago with low ratings like this and they didn’t even burn it off on a Saturday morning, we just never got to see the last episode or two. I’m STILL butt hurt about it. It was a great show.
Agreed! Loved tour group. I think it took me a few episodes to get into it, but I thought it was a great show.
Really enjoyed the Carson and Thom show. Carson cracks me up. With everything so crazy happening this show is just fun to watch. Exhausted from all the petty fights on the Housewives shows.
