I interrupt the Bravocentric streak of posts to catch up on Catfish. I have two old episodes I need to clear off my DVR. I know lots of you wonder why I even still do these. The answer is simple they replay in marathons overnight nearly every night on MTV and people search to find discussion and updates on the idiots on this show. It’s what we call an “evergreen” post that brings views long, long, long, after the post is made unlike things like Nene’s husband is having a surgery where people lose interest once they hear the outcome. Plus I used to love seeing the staging in the houses but lately, they stay mainly in LA and we don’t get to see the homes of the catfish or the victim very often anymore.
Nae is 19 from Youngstown, Ohio. She has been talking to Brandon for about six months. He is 18 and lives in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He is “Internet famous.” She met Brandon on Tinder after a bad breakup. His very first contact with her said, “You would make a good girlfriend.” When her sister told her he was probably a catfish, she told him and he flipped out and quit talking to her for a while.
Nae has never been on a plane and they are having her fly to LA. I guess we won’t see Youngstown or Altoona. Le sigh. Brandon is much too busy to Facetime, because, you know, “Internet Famous.” After he blew her off for suggesting he might be a catfish, “someone” texted from his phone that something bad had happened to Brandon. My God, these people are dumb. Then he turned back up and said he didn’t want to talk about the really bad thing. Max points out this is textbook catfish.
He has 80K followers with two pictures total on his site. The guys begin their incredibly facile Internet search. He doesn’t even follow her on IG. Because that is not him. They guys find a guy named Matt who is also from Altoona who claims he has met Brandon because Brandon hooked up with his girlfriend. So Matt is currently my primary suspect, especially because he was one of a handful of guys out of five thousand followers. Matt doesn’t have Brandon’s phone number and they chat through Twitter.
Nae’s sister seems shady too. She is still in touch with Nae’s first high school boyfriend and seems to have an agenda to get them back together. She is suspect number two. And the first boyfriend is now suspect number three. The profile is several years old so it seems odd that he or anyone she knows would be using this particular profile.
Time for the obligatory scene with Nev’s wife, Laura. Max has decided not to return to Catfish, so I feel like we have been set up this entire season for Laura to be then new Max.
Brandon responds to Nev’s video to get in touch with him and tells him it is not a good time for him because he is traveling with his folks. Then Nae calls them and says Brandon has reached out to her and told her he is in LA and wants to meet her in private. The guys hurry over to her house with the cameras.
Max doesn’t believe he is in LA. He wouldn’t drive two hours to see her in Youngtown. They tell her to invite him over to the house and see what happens. I am starting to think it is the old boyfriend. He would fly out there to see her.
The plan is for Nev to meet him outside and tell him it’s on camera or not at all. So a guy shows up and he agrees to be filmed. So they all to go out to see him. Yep! It is her ex, Thomas. She’s pissed. Thomas says he just Googled and image of a random blond white guy and that was Brandon.
I kind of like the moss green suede furniture the bought for the rental house.
Thomas keeps pleading with her but she has heard all of this before and she is not interested. Nev makes Thomas confess to Nae’s sister. She was surprised.
UPDATE: They haven’t spoken since they stopped filming.
