Shahs of Sunset: Emeralds Aren’t Forever

September 14, 2018 by tamaratattles 36 Comments

Golnesa gets her engagement ring appraised and we are being led to believe it is work $165,000. I highly doubt that. If it were the proper reaction would be SELL IT! GG says fine she is keeping it. #eyeroll

Tommy and MJ see a therapist to help navigate their communication issues. MJ starts by saying that sometimes Tommy yells a lot when he gets angry and she would prefer calmer communication. Oh please MJ. Calm is not a word that describes either one of you. Tommy says he is constantly being criticized and never receives positive affirmations. He says in those instances she is a lot like her mother. Oh boy. MJ says, “Cheap shot!”  The next second, she is crying because he feels unappreciated.

Adam is converting to Judaism for Reza. That seems odd to me. I understand converting to most religions but Judaism has always had a bloodline component to it. There are people born to Jewish fathers that are not Jewish because their mother was not Jewish. Anyway, it’s whatever. Mazel Tov. Adam just said Reza is a half Jew. See? Adam wants to have the same religion for the entire family. That makes sense. Adam asks Reza what the time frame is for children. Because I’m sure they never talk about this off camera. They have waited until now, just like they have waited  to have the fake half a million dollar hair care line investment conversation. Reza tell Adam he is officially in charge of making the baby and to let him know when it happens.

It’s Nowruz time. This is the type of thing I was so excited to see when this show first started out. It was supposed to be more about Iranian culture and less about ridiculous arguments and fake businesses. Nema and Mona were raised without a lot of their Iranian culture because their parents didn’t want them to face the xenophobia many Iranians faced after fleeing Iran in the 1980s. Golnesa burned her marriage license in the fire. Where were MJ and Tommy? I miss Asa for this scene.

Reza is not at the beach for the event because his house was buglarized. I’m not sure what structure it was in but all of his most prized possessions were boxed up somewhere while he was working on the new house. Pretty much everything was broken or destroyed. He must have been so gutted. Being burglarized is a huge violation and for the rest of his life he will suddenly remember something else that is missing that he didn’t realize.

Mona and Nema meet up with Destiney,Golnessa, and Sherv for dinner at an Iranian restaurant. Destiney wants to talk about her estrangement from her father, who was absent from her life. She has a lot of resentment toward her father and has hired a private investigator to try to locate him presuming he is still alive.

It was great to see the celebration of the Iranian New Year in three homes. Adam and Reza, Golnessa and her parents (where is her sister?) and Mona and Nema trying their hand at their first celebration. It makes so much more sense that the first day of the year should be on the first day of spring than in the dead of winter.

Nema and Mona’s celebration included his father and their sister and other family and friends. Nema feels like he is a disappoint to his father because he is not a doctor or a lawyer. He is really proud of his daughters. This created a rift between them. Or at least some distance. Nema seems to be the only one in his family that does not speak Iranian.

MJ and Vida come to Reza and Adam’s celebration. Tommy will be late because he is working. Vida noticed the lack of a goldfish right away. It sadly passed away a bit earlier and was buried in the trash after Reza eulogized it with the wine prayer. Why the wine prayer? It’s the only prayer he knew by heart. I mean if you only know one prayer, I think the wine prayer is a good choice. Mike arrives with Morgan, his latest rent a showmance. When Reza asks if Morgan is coming to the celebration at Mike’s mom’s house that evening Mike says he didn’t invite her. He says “they are not there yet.” Morgan is not pleased with this.

Reza bought a “$15,000” emerald for his mother to be set in a ring. He passes it around the group and Adam drops it two feet onto a carpeted floor. Supposedly a corner broke off. Reza is furious with Adam who quickly offers to replace it. Reza once again points out he can’t afford to replace it. When they show it in Mike’s hand you can see the chip but you can also see the inclusions. There is no way that is a $15,000 emerald. And for the corner to chip like that there was likely a fissure already there. Then Mike has the never to chastise Adam about it. Reza jumps up to burn esfand seeds to ward off the evil eye. For some reason Reza is boiling the esfand. Never seen that before, the way I have seen it was more like burning sage.

I agree with Mike’s decision not to introduce his showmance to his mother on a family holiday. Everyone else though has seems think he’s being a putz. Reza, MJ and Tommy got to Mike’s family celebration and across town Destiney, Sherv, Mona and Nema join Golnesa’s family. They video chat between the houses. All of this Iranian food is making me hungry. I’m nibbling on feta cheese. That’s all I’ve got. It is also Mercedeh’s dad’s birthday. That’s a lot of emotion.

Adam takes Reza to the surrogate place to discuss babies. Reza says in his talking head he’s not paying for anything today so Adam better be planning to write a check. However, when they talk to the guy, Reza is the one answering all the questions about how this will go down. One surrogate inseminated with two eggs one boy and one girl, one Reza’s and one Adam’s for a twin birth.  Reza wants a Caucasian surrogate who looks like Adam. That will be $125,000 just for the surrogate. When the surrogate pimp (I mean really what do we call him) leaves the room, Reza tells Adam he spent $500K on shampoo and doesn’t have money for the baby. So we end where we began with a fake storyline. Every dime Reza has is invested in his properties and he still has mortgages. The hair line thing is a spokesperson/namesake situation for the real hair line people to try to make a buck off Shahs and give Reza a cut. He never had money for a baby in the first place. Reza says once the house is done, they can refinance and take out the money to buy a kid. Adam is fine with that.

love seeing these real persian celebrations. chahar shanbeh souri and no rooz….and they even included haji firooz. at least half of the show should always be devoted to things persian. 😉 who says a reality show cannot teach you something?

it isnt a surprise that nema doesnt really speak farsi well. i know lots of full and half persians that were born in the usa that didnt want to learn or just learned some words and phrases…..or they speak finglish (farsi and english together at times.) it is always great though to be able to speak another language.

did not realize until this episode that morgan was half persian?

did anyone recognize the woman at the jewelry store? isnt she the same lady (aida) that was on relative success with tabatha show when she went to help them with their family jewelry business? it was aida, the widow, two of her sons and two stepsons if i remember correctly.

do we think that gg and nema actually have a romantic connection? i am not sure he is her type. i think she prefers the “bad boy” type.

    looking forward to MJs wedding.

Who was the woman in the picture at Reza’s condo? Any chance they will replace Mike with Sherv? Even for a Bravo show Mike is so fake and not at all interesting (IMO).

I dunno about the photo. And no, Sherv was reduced to recurring this season and Mike is fulltime. Sherv won’t come clean about how he makes his money or his personal life so we will only be seeing him at weddings and events as a guest.

I believe the photo at Reza’s is of Farah Pahlavi, Empress of Iran.
To me, the show is worth watching for the gorgeous floral arrangements and Persian food porn alone.
The diamond and emerald segments…don’t get me started. I am a certified gemologist. I used to specialize in loose stones, so the editing and pricing always amuses me.
The Hebrew blessing of the wine for the dearly departed fish was hysterical. Adam surely learned a prayer or two in his conversion classes.

I am so mad at Reza for how he publicly belittles Adam about money and just in general doesn’t treat him with respect, as if they are equal partners. About the emerald, Reza tells Adam, in front of everyone, “You can’t afford it.” And at the egg donor office, he knows Adam doesn’t have the money to just write a check for $125,000. Reza is just a jerk. And I would be furious if my husband “invested” $500,000 in anything without talking to me (though I am annoyed by that whole fake storyline too).

And about the emerald, I thought the same thing: Adam dropped it two feet onto the carpet. If it broke from that, it was never going to have lasted being in a ring on someone’s hand. When Vida said the color was too bright, Reza said something about how clear it was–but I agree there had to have been a flaw/fissure on that corner, or it would not have broken. Or else it’s glass and not an emerald at all. I don’t think it’s $15,000. I think it was glass, and Reza is mad at Adam for inadvertently revealing its poor quality.

At any rate, I don’t like Reza because of how he treats Adam. I don’t like Nema because he seems so shallow. MJ would drive me crazy. I DO like Destiney.

I never believe all of their claims of wealth. How could a jeweler value a diamond of that supposed value while it is still in the setting? They do seem to splash out on flowers and food for all their special meals etc though. I wonder if Bravo is footing the bill. A lot of it looks catered.

Reza has always been full of shit, and he has never treated Adam well, at least on camera. Maybe he has to show how macho he is. Adam is wasting his time if he really wants a baby. It is getting boring to see them go to a different so-called surrogate business each year. Especially when they don’t have $10 in their checking accounts.

Loved looking at all the celebrations and food and flowers, no matter who paid for them.

Are we going to see Asa at all this season or have they just cut her out?

    Shervin, so much promise.

Do MJ and Reza even pretend to sell real estate any longer or have they given up the premise.

Destiny is quickly becoming my favorite.

I just don’t care enough about Mike’s fake romance.

GG is certainly having fun this year and I really like her storyline. I’m sure the $165,000 was full retail that her fiance paid $11,000 for.

Asa was cut WAY down in POST production. She is supposed to be on IIRC two episodes. Both Asa and Sherv were told after production ended of their demotion in status neither expected it. Sherv is on a lot more than Asa but both were cut for the same reason, not sharing their lives. Asa may have had some sort of discussion with production about pulling out of her her two episodes. I mean it seems like we should have seen her by now.

Her scenes will be with Adam. We saw one in the previews where she tells Adam she is not sure Reza really wants a kid. And in the unseen one, Adam invites Asa to MJ’s wedding as his plus one but I don’t think she goes.

I just don’t understand why Adam wasn’t furious at Reza for going behind his back and investing half a million dollars. It just rolled off his back. Reza got off so easy (if I believed the storyline) I’d be throwing shit across the room and would have left my other half sitting there with his mouth open. How does Adam earn money anyway?

I also am surprised at how easily and quickly everyone accepted Morgan. She and Mike don’t seem to be a good fit anyway. I don’t feel; the love from Mike like I did with Jessica. Morgan has the personality of a housefly. There’s just nothing there and I wish Shervin had a bigger part. I like him a lot.

I see that Mile and Nema had a little beef but on the show, they seem to really get on. I like him and am anxious to see what the storyline for him and GG will be

To me, Destiny seems to be so much more “animated” than she was last season. Over the top.

Is the reason Shervin isn’t fulltime because he won’t come clean about his personal life and money?

On this show, Reza said Adam works in post-production (for either TV or film–he didn’t say which). Reza called it “9-to-5 money.”

Or did you mean how does Reza earn money? That is a little trickier to say for sure. He used to sell real estate (or pose at selling real estate-who knows with this crew?). My guess is that like so many of the people on these reality shows, they start relying on their show check, rather than making other money. I suspect that is what MJ does.

I wish they would reduce Mike and bring back Sherv full time. I watched his intro season recently. When MJ sold him & Nema their palace, she said he was a tech guy. I’d love to learn more about his friendship with Nema. They were roommates from jump, shared a room in Belize and Nema seemed very comfortable in Shervin’s cliffside home with the pool & alta vista. Just sayin…

I like Destiny and the new Nema. They bring much needed new blood and storylines to this show.

If I had my way, Asa would be back. I’d rather see her family navigate their caftan business as well as their scrumptious Persian food porn over Reza belittling Adam any day.

I’d also like to see Asifa and Bobby come back. Yes they were draining and full of drama, but I wanted to learn more about them individually.

The whole story about investing half a million dollars is definitely so fake. To start with, I don’t believe Reza has that much disposable income, and secondly, if he really did that without consulting Adam, I wouldn’t have expected Adam to accept it so calmly. After all, it meant that they couldn’t have a baby any time soon. Reza can be charming, but he is really a douche at times, and to say they had to sell their house before they could begin the surrogacy process was also too quietly agreed on by Adam. I’m really sick of these phony story lines. If Reza has his way, they’ll never have children. He also needs to start treating Adam more respectfully, not as though he’s a subordinate. It makes Adam look weak and Reza look like a jerk.

Mike leaves me cold, although in a way I respect him for not inviting Morgan to his family celebration if he’s not that invested in the relationship yet; however, that seemed like news to her. There’s something in his eyes that always looks sly and lizard-like to me, and I can’t seem to get over it.

How strange that Nema is the only one in his family not to speak Iranian – I could understand if none of the younger ones did, but just him? He should start learning right now and embrace his heritage. I can’t see him with GG, and I think she’s just playing with him. He’s not very attractive and the way he threw his girlfriend to the curb after so long left me angry at him. Actually, that whole thing struck me as phony too.

I miss Asa, although I can understand why she chose not to be on the show any more. She doesn’t need the money or the hassles.

MJ is one big curvy hunk of burning love. I think she has tremendous guts and self-assurance to wear the clothes she does, which do nothing at all to hide the fact that she has a very large rear end and big legs. When she came out in her bathing suit, I said to myself, “You go girl!” Tommy obviously loves every inch of her and I think that’s great.

I love this show but hope they don’t go too much farther down the road of staged scenes than they already have. I love seeing their get-togethers and learning about their culture, but hate to feel like I might as well be watching a scripted movie.

He said she had a “Come up and see me sometime seductive” style; whereas GG had an angry style of skiing. When we saw them on the slopes this was dead-on!

On WWHL, Andy asked MJ about her thoughts on GG & Nema. She replied with something like, “For GG, this is just a rebound. For him, well he’s, I don’t want to ruin anything..” and Andy told her rn “yeah, don’t ruin anything” so she stopped that train of thought. Since then, I’ve been so flipping curious about where their storyline is headed

I can’t understand how any of the people posting here find these people attractive. They are not. They are all fairly stupid too. Honestly, the only one with any brains was Asa and she knew enough to get out of dodge and not disclose anything about her personal life. She will do a lot better than the rest of them, combined. They all look so dirty and greasy and eat like pigs and try to come off as some Persian gangsters, it’s actually embarrassing to watch them. I feel like there’s a lot of shady shit going on with this whole crew.

Attraction is subjective. As for “eating like pigs,” we see them when they are eating celebratory meals or at events, such as the gathering for Shams. Just think if other cultures judged us by viewing our Thanksgiving feasts. I am so ENVIOUS of that beautiful Persian food. I want to taste EVERYTHING!

Don’t forget TT, Jessica went through the hard core conversion (from what I remember). Most of the denominations of Judaism (main ones – Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, modern Orthodox) have a conversion process. It is just that the Orthodox don’t recognize someone who went through Reform conversion, etc.

However… I find it odd that the most partying celebratory cast of any Bravo isn’t planning a party or event celebrating Adam’s conversion.
