This is the end of an era. And sadly we seem to be going out with a whimper rather than a bang. Much like all Project Runway fans, I rejoiced when I heard the show was returning to Bravo. I long for the glory days of seasons 1-6 when there were better judges, longer time limits, less gimmicks and Christian Siriano. I had high, HIGH hopes. Those hopes have been dashed.
For those of you who are nice enough to read my recaps, you are well aware that I am a fashion snob. I admit it. What you may also not know is I’m a reality show snob. (and a food, art and design snob, since I’m admitting stuff). The only shows I watch are the ones where the cast has to have ACTUAL talent. Otherwise I just read the recaps provided here by our fearless leader, which are often better than the shows themselves (and a hell of a lot funnier).
I watch Top Chef religiously, I watch all of the Netflix Chef’s Table series, I USED to watch So You Think You Can Dance until they dumbed that show down into oblivion (Vanessa Hudgens is USELESS) and I will watch The Voice sometimes. I don’t watch the Food Network anymore because it seems to have devolved into a game show channel with mediocre “cooking” shows. (I will still watch Iron Chef, on occasion) and I can’t even begin to talk about the loss of Anthony Bourdain. Oh, and Masterchef is FAKE. I have a friend who was on it. Completely and utterly fake. Actually that Ellen furniture show was good, lots of seriously established and educated folks on that one….. I think it’s canceled….BUT I always thought that Project Runway could make it back to the reality glory days of old. Sadly, this is not to be.
Heidi and Tim are departing the show for Amazon to do some sort of collaboration there. And even though I can pretty much do without Heidi, Tim Gunn is the heart of this show. Period. He is a mentor in the truest sense of the word. He is kind, but is tough when he needs to be. He is an oasis of sanity in an insane world. He is a shining beacon that class, intelligence and true savoir faire still exists in this world full of Kardashian tainted ick. I’m ok with the spin offs because I always know Tim will be back for the original. Tim is the reason I suffered through the casting and ongoing idiotic drama of the Buitendorp twits. I want Tim to raise my kids. I want Tim to RAISE ME. Zac Posen, the lesser Michael Kors, is also departing. (If you get the chance Watch House of Z, fabulous documentary of Zac as an enfant terrible and what it REALLY takes to make it in the industry). Nina Garcia is now the Editor in Chief of ELLE magazine so I can’t imagine she will be sticking around either. I simply do not know how they will be re-tooling this show??
I wonder if they will call in Issac and the cast of All-Stars. I do so love Isaac. Alyssa Milano sucks and her stylist hates her. Georgina Chapman is still hiding in her NYC townhouse and I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks, that bitch knew shit was going down. They have tried several times to do reality shows with such past favorites as Austin Scarlett, Santino Rice and Chris March. While bringing in a fan favorite might be fun, it will not be Project Runway. MAYBE Christian Siriano could pull it off.
The fact of the matter is that this show has never produced a true fashion star. People have made successful careers but no one has shot into the stratosphere the way Top Chef has turned out some mega, mega talent. I have a friend who is an attorney for Bravo and she said that the first year on Top Chef they cast half actual chefs, half “personalities”. The personalities were quickly eliminated because you cannot fake being a chef. Project Runway still insists on casting personalities. And the show has been in a slow decline because of the gimmicky crap that these poor people who have real, raw talent have to put up with. Not to mention the most random guest judges ever.
So I wait to see what the BIG REVEAL will be regarding the fate of this show. Andy is very excited about it. Andy is also very excited about grown woman fighting and tacky drama so that doesn’t exactly get my hopes up either.
What do you guys think?? Can Project Runway rise like a Phoenix from the ashes? Or am I going to be watching and recapping a new show on Amazon? Sadly it will probably be the latter….
