Happy Fourth Of July!

July 4, 2018 by tamaratattles 43 Comments

Happy Birthday America! You may be 242 but you don’t look a day over 200!

Wednesday is a really dumb day for the Fourth of July. I don’t recall networks ever deciding to just run reruns for an entire week. WTF?

What are your plans for the day? Mine involved waking up to watch a bit of the Peachtree Road Race and then going back to sleep. I used to make hot dogs on a George Foreman grill but a few years back the grill started to smoke a bit and I decided it needed to go. This year, I might go through the Checkers drive thru for a chili dog and buy some beer. Or I might go buy some bread and make a BLT out of my giant orange tomato. Or I might take another nap. Or  watch some Big Brother live feeds.

My greatest hope of the day is that a kid shows up to cut my grass. I haven’t seen hair nor hide of one in three weeks!

Pose

I do have some binge watching suggestions during these difficult times. There is new show on OWN called Love Is _____?  The title is stupid but the show is great. We are about three episodes in. Also on OWN is Queen Sugar. We are a couple of episodes into that. It is also good.

AMC has a new show called Dietland. It’s quirky and the lead character is an overweight woman working in the beauty industry who is contemplating weight loss surgery. Along the way she in up investigating a group of serial killers who are sort of feminist revolutionaries. Or something. After the first episode, you are not sure what is going on but people keep getting killed. The more you watch the less weird it seems and the more you figure stuff out.

FX has Pose. It’s really good but kind of depressing and heartbreaking. The Lady C is recapping Pose this season so she can catch you up with that!

Also on my play list this week is The Affair on Showtime.  It’s a great show and the newest season just started after an excruciatingly long hiatus. There are essentially four main people on the show. Each episode focuses on two people who have had interaction over a period of time. The first half of the hour is how one person saw what occurred and the second half is how the other person recalls the events. It’s really interesting.

This week would be a good time for y’all to remember what good shows were like before our brains got rotten with Bravo crap.

So ? What are you plans today? I think I am going with hot dogs and curly fries today.

We’ve come close a number of times – buying a George foreman – still haven’t pulled the trigger yet. We had our #4thofJuly on July1st – Canada day, spent the day as spuds on the beach, watched people walk by at various rates wearing various clothing. People watching is fun.

    Happy 4th of july everyone!

    Happy 4th, Tamara and Banjo!
My George Foreman bit the dust years ago. My husband might have had something to do with that since he didn’t think the top was heavy enough so he used to literally put a BRICK on top of it! LOL.
Big fan of Queen Sugar and Dietland. I binged out on all the previous seasons of Queen Sugar when I discovered it a couple of weeks ago. Now I am addicted and the new shows just don’t get here fast enough. Dietland is looking really good and powerful right now. Loving it.
Here’s hoping all of our fur babies don’t suffer too much from fireworks!

Small hometown parade goes right by my house. So watched that today. The bonus is I get to watch a parade without pants.

Going to a friend’s house for a late afternoon dinner – I’m bringing the apps. Since I have to work tomorrow and I do worry about the cat, I will not stay for fireworks.

Happy Independence Day to all! We’re getting yard work done. I built a block wall to support the fern bed I made, so now I’m feeling the strain. My husband is getting some irrigation set up. We’re also getting ready for a cookout with work people by getting together brownies and such to take over. I’m watching Endeavour on the PBS website as I really enjoy the Oxford setting. The old buildings are so beautiful. Hope you all have a great day!

Woke this morning rather early and decided to make various dishes from the ingredients in my fridge. Made a cucumber/onion with sweet vinegar dressing, a dozen deviled eggs, caprese salad with multicolored grape tomatoes halved, mozzarella & fresh basil from my garden and white balsamic reduction to drizzle when served. Lastly a fresh spinach salad with strawberries, walnuts, goat cheese, grilled chicken and fresh from the Ninja mixer strawberry dressing. Then a nap. I’ll get up in a while to share some of the food with my kids as they come and go before heading out for fireworks. It’s to flipping hot here for me to venture far from home to watch the fireworks, so i’ll Sit on the front porch until the sweat gets to be too much, and dip into my comfy AC’d house and perhaps turn on the local TV channel to watch the DC or Baltimore fireworks displays. Taking the next couple of days off and plan to check out some of those TV shows to binge on…thanks TT. A chili dog and curly fries sounds really delish….that may be on the menu tomorrow!!! Happy 4th! Hoping you’ve got some doggie Xanax for Banjo! If only there was a way to keep noice reducing headphones over a dog’s ears!!!

Happy Independence Day, Tamara and Banjo.
From Nanette, Calico and Caster (not as in Pollux).

We got an early start with unexpected fireworks watched from our driveway last night. These girls are the first dogs I’ve known who are nonplussed by fireworks.

On tap today: watering the tomatoes; filling up the water gardens in ceramic pots (photos to come. Seriously TT the most rewarding and low maintenance gardens ever); and ant killing in honor of 1776. I usually give ants a chance to relocate when they are indoors, but these buggers keep biting me when I water.

I guess some food too. After working almost every holiday for years, I forget about food fests on the holidays.

Happy 4th TT to you and Banjo ,hope our fur babies can get through tonight without any major trauma .
My Dog will sit right at my feet if I am home during fireworks . neck surgery a couple years ago I have had zero desire to go watch fireworks.
This year I had plans to go watch fireworks and then last Friday my husband had a lawn mower accident and has 30 stitches in the bottom of his foot.
I guess my family is never meant to leave the house for fireworks lol.
I am thinking of leaving the hubby here alone for a hour though,he is driving me nuts .

Just woke up going to stay inside in the ac, watch rhooc shower and go in for my second night of third shift tonight at the hotel. We each take 2 days a month relieving the 3rd shift guy who came by for coffee at 2am went to Cherokee and returned at 6 $150 to the good. Probably going in early tonight so I can go up to top floor and watch fireworks. I am thankful to our forefathers!! 🇺🇸

Happy Happy 4th to you, TT, and Banjo as well. I hope the fireworks aren’t too hard on him.

My city bans them but we are surrounded by several cities that don’t, so there will be noise here and all round, legal and illegal fireworks (90 miles from the border at Tijuana).

Dietland lost me after one episode but Pose has me locked in. As I posted in that thread while I could anticipate seeing the tragedy of AIDs as it developed, seeing the use of injected SILICONE caught me unaware and ohhh.. not just the immediate lumps and effects but knowing that years later so many were sickened and destroyed by that silicone loose in the body..

But there are some fierce characters!

And the the spoiling of that show here is exquisite!!!

I am watching my usual.. as many M*A*S*H episodes as I can find.

Of course tonight for me is Big Brother, Code Black and Colony..

To start the day I pried myself out of the cave to drive a long time cancer patient (5 years. Her2positive breast cancer is a bitch of long treatment). Yes this doctor had her infusion center open today for a few patients.

The upside was that traffic wasn’t too bad and there was tons of available parking at the hospital!!!

And it got me out of the house to take advantage of first Wednesday of the month 20% off at Rite Aid for a list of items, and then to the grocery. I was out of just about everything and they were stocked up. That parking lot was full.

My patient wanted to send home some soup she and her mother made and it is interesting, chicken, large chunks of carrot but then there is something I don’t recognize at all. and more puzzling, she packed it along with three slices of white bread!

My patient is Vietnamese and I don’t understand the white bread unless she thinks I would eat that instead of rice.

Tomorrow is the first concert in the park for our city and two of my friends are singing the National Anthem and half dozen from our group of singers will be humming with them. I suspect it will be interesting, I hope.

I have no tomato plants but I trimmed my ficus tree this week and cut back the spider plants that grow in a small area in my patio and threaten to take over the world..

Just got home from a cook out with friends, I don’t think I’ll be able to eat for a week! I brought home a burger for my two pups to share. I’m going to put a calming tablet (chamomile, ginger & tryptophan) in one for my girl that’s terrified of fireworks and thunder. My other little lady could sleep through an earthquake. We’ve been having quick shower bursts all day, so it may derail some fireworks, but I doubt it. I love my little north Georgia town, but we do have some fireworks enthusiast (aka Good Old Boys). I’m re-watching season one of Ozark to get ready for season two that starts 8/31. Lunch with friends tomorrow, yard work on Friday, nothing planned Saturday or Sunday. Happy Independence Day!

Banjo and I have been working on positive reinforcement this week. Tonight he is on a mild muscle relaxer (it’s one of his old scripts that is slightly expired because I don’t like medicating him) and he got a hotdog today which he loved. He got to eat half and the other half is in tiny pieces with halved yellow grape tomatoes (the only tomatoes that have met his haughty standards this year) and bits of bun. It’s in the plastic hot dog container that makes a pop when I open it. He’s quickly learning that if he doesn’t bark and hears the pop, he gets a treat. We’ve had some minor fireworks all day and this is working. All bets are off for the grand finale of course. I just hope I have enough treats to make it through the night.

I was going to ask you TT how do you keep Banjo from not exploding herself with all thess fireworks? Even though it is officially July 5th I will be tortured with fireworks for about another week in my area. My luna powers through her Benadryl and just paces around drunk. At one point poor thing just stood there shaking and panting like the world is coming to an end. I have air conditioners on, 3 fans, 2 tvs on all trying to stifle some blasts but she is not falling for it. I feel like i am failing as a fur-mother.

Started the morning of the 4th the right way, with a bang–oh yeah, we eloped in May & just told family last week. Got tired of trying to accommodate everyone else’s schedule & demands (birthday parties, graduation, trips to Disney World, plane tickets for boyfriend & idiot SIL, move date a week because it was too close to late wife’s b’day, etc.). We were still trying to go through with a ceremony for the family because the 3 youngest great-granddaughters wanted to be flower girls, but it just got too complicated trying to please everyone, so when elder granddaughter suggested we just do a destination wedding I fessed up that we’d already done the deed I think everyone was actually relieved to now that grandma was actually legal & not engaging in what Betty White has referred to as her “sleepover dates.” I’d had 2 generations of grandchildren querying me about having clothes in my date’s closet. Anyway, life is nice now, opening living together, & my custom ring (his military call sign, a dragon with an emerald in its eye) is quite nice. Lovely quiet day, our only outing was Flyboy driving me to the Veteran’s Cemetery to deliver flowers & a beer to my late husband’s grave. St. Louis BBQ sandwiches, corn on the cob & baked beans with pineapple. Hot tub, fireworks & Sleep Number tonight.

Beef with St. Louis red BBQ sauce (slightly spicy). I used ready-made Heinz (Big Ollies packaged w/another variety of sauce) topped with pickles & served on sesame seed buns just because I like them. Flyboy is NC born & bred, & we reside there now, so his idea of BBQ is shredded pork w/vinegar sauce topped with coleslaw, to which I have never become accustomed, even though I arrived here (via the Panama Canal by sailboat from Newport Beach CA) a quarter century ago. Flyboy spent years in the SE Asian jungles with rice bugs as a staple in his diet, but was leery of my version of BBQ. Fortunately, he went for seconds.

I love all sorts of BBQ, Miz, When I lived in rural south Carolina they had yellow BBQ with a mustard base. It was great! Some places also had the NC kind with the vinegar. I love all the kinds of BBQ and refuse to pick of favorite. But STL is REALLY awesome.

Sat poolside for a few ours now headed Cottonwood for supper and fireworks (dear puppies home with dog sitter).

Had some down time, differing levels of work going into getting ready, my oldest and I are watching “Forest Gump” sipping wine in the blessed a/c.

I completely missed the Fourth as I have been in Paris for a couple of weeks. It seemed like just any other day.

There has been a heatwave here and it is extra difficult since almost nothing is air conditioned, and even places that have AC don’t crank it enough to really cool things down. I will be so glad to get home to my house, turn the AC down low, and stay inside for a week.

Seems like it was a good week to be away, with nothing on tv because of the holiday.

Glad to hear everyone seemed to have a good day.

Despite yesterday being a National Holiday, I was busy working myself to the bone for you guys. I did a very scientific study of hotdogs. You are welcome.

I set out to go to Checkers and get two chili dogs for me and a plain dog for Banjo. But first I had to stop at Quick Trip (where i got shanghaied by a couple broke down on the side of the road, because I’m a sucker and it was the 4th, but I digress) Quick Tip has good hot dogs and they are cheap. So I decided to get Banjo’s hot dog there. They are two for like two dollars or something so I got a jalepeno sausage dog for me.

Then, in the interest of science, and my readers, I proceeded to Checkers and got two chili dogs and a medium fry. For some reason I thought they had curly fries but they don’t and that was the reason I went but their fries are coated in all sorts of chemicals and are very good. The chili dogs were just okay. I tasted Banjo’s and wanted his. The sausage dog for breakfast this morning was amazing.

So the winner is Quick Trip. Or it might be a Racetrack. Their buns are better, their dogs are better and you can take lots of little packets of condiment. too! 🙂

I should point out that buying lunch at a gas station does sound weird but the store is very clean and they are name brand dogs ( I forget which kind) and it’s cheap!

I was so grateful that our dogs are not bothered by fireworks. Or so I thought after all these years. I hadn’t put it together that we have lived in counties that outlawed “personal” fireworks. “The girls” watched the major display from our driveway with us on the 3rd. They have watched displays from our stoop in Monterey and our backyard hill in Crockett (Bay Area) without any problem. But last night, in our new Sacramento neighborhood, there was a lot of “nearby noise.” My poor girl’s heart was racing. The noise lasted about 1.5 hours and stopped promptly at 10p.m. The girls finally calmed down about 10:30. Until some asshole started up again at 12:38a.m. I decided not to bother the overworked cops, but if it goes on like that tonight, there may be some vigilante frontier justice meted out.

Hot diggity dog! We (and the dogs) had Trader Joe’s version of Hebrew National dawgs on soft pretzel buns. The buns with TJ. mustard MADE the sandwich. And the best sauerkraut from TJ’s — with Persian cucumbers in it. It sounds like an oxymoron, but it is “fresh pickle” and in the refrigerator section. Fresh strawberry shortcake with sweetened creme fraiche. Bought enough of everything to do further “research” tomorrow. (Tonight it’s chicken salad and guacamole with THE BEST avocados. More of The girldawgs’ favorites. Spoiling them after a rough night.)
