I think we can write this story off to yet another contract renegotiation standoff. Rumors have been swirling for days that Eileen Davidson was ready to walk over her Y & R contract and she just went on Twitter to make it official with the following statement:
“Yes I am leaving my second home @youngandrestlesscbs in September. I have been so blessed to have been able to play Ashley Abbott and work with all my lovely and amazing friends on the show. I have so much love and gratitude to them all. Time for more control over my day to day! ❤❤💋”
Falling ratings for daytime soaps as well as lack of pay increases for the actor for the last several years have been rumored as problems at Y & R. There is talk the entire show could be cancelled. With Eileen choosing to walk, I’d say that a cancellation is imminent.
Eileen originated the role of Ashley Abbott on The Young and the Restless in March 1982, and has played it off and on since then. She left the show in 1988 and in the 1990s she was on Santa Barbara until it was cancelled and then came to Days of Our Lives as the villain Kristen Dimera and played several other comedic roles on Days at the same time. She returned to Y& R in 1999 and was fired in 2007 for what the producers claimed was a lack of storyline. In 2012 Eileen was hires by both Y&R and Days, both shows are owned by Sony, but Y&R refused to share her so she was ultimately back on Days. After three Emmy nominations she won her first Emmy as a lead actress in 2014 for her portrayal of Kristen Dimera. She won her second Emmy this year for her role as Ashley Abbot on Y&R .
I’ve never watched Y & R so my only reaction to this is that I hope we see her back on Days or RHBH or even better both. Eileen is currently on a white water kayaking trip on the Kern river with her husband, family and friends, enjoying life. As she should be.
