The episode begins with Poppy and Richards banging in the upstate New York “cabin.” Meanwhile Erza finally calls Jules to let her know his father is dead. While he may be dead, some of us wonder if he is dead.dead.dead.
Maddie is looking stunning in a black wig and black suit at the horsetrack. She is carrying the phone that was mailed to her at her mother’s house and gets a message that says, ” If you get this, let me know you’re safe. I am. ” She almost replies with “Ezra?” then decides not to respond at all. She approaches three people at the racetrack and pretends to a lawyer looking for, “Cyril Roberts.” What the hell is she up to now? She’s not in touch with the doctor so has no mark at the moment. These three make her for a fraud right away. Maddie quickly changes her con to a long lost daughter Cy never knew he had. They inform her that Cy is gay but she sticks to her story and the say the will point her in the right direction, but they can’t be sure what condition she will find him in.
Jules tries to interrupt the lovebirds to tell them about Ezra’s situation but they are really not that interested so she walks to town watering hole where she just so happens to run into Lenny Cohen. If I hadn’t known she runs in to Lenny, I would have never recognized her. Jules opens up to Lenny about why she is so tortured. When she was a senior she had a bipolar roommate who she was very close to. The roommate was a tormented genius who killed herself by jumping out of their dorm room window. She was devastated for weeks and got behind on her studies and ended up turning in the room mate’s project as her senior thesis. Poppy came along and used the family power and money to get her out of trouble. She resents Poppy for that. As she is telling Lenny this story, Poppy is telling it to Richard. As I am listening to this I am wondering what the point is. Then I remember Sally talking about Arthur stealing his brother’s patent. And Richard’s scenes where he was essentially stealing his salesman’s clients. Is it possible that the Doctor’s method of picking his targets has to do with profiting off the work of others?
Lenny gives us the titular quote this week when she talks about the punished and the punishers who say, “Off you go, that’s enough.” She says that Jules needs to stop punishing herself, she needs to be the one who says, “That’s enough.” She also calls Jules by her first and last name. Then she gives her a ride home and invites Jules and her friends to dinner. When she pulls away, Lenny says to Jules, “See you soon, macaroon! ” That is the title of the finale episode.
Meanwhile, Richard has discovered that Poppy videoed their sexy time and sent it to her husband. Poppy is done with Richard now and appears to be leaving with the car.
Next we see Maddie in a whole new look coming out of a small town mom and pop grocery store. Colleen and Patrick are still on her tail. Why don’t they just grab her rather than following her for days? Patrick wonders the same thing and Colleen explains they want The Doctor. Oh! Should point out that Maddie stole someone’s dog along the way. She took the dog to a nursing home and pretended that she was there to do pet therapy with Cy Roberts. Cy was apparently the con artist to trained her to work for The Doctor. He’s been tucked away in an old folks home as sort of a retirement present from The Doctor. He wanted out and it was better than being killed. Maddie wants to know how to find The Doctor because she wants out too. He says he never learned his name just that he is a real doctor who practices out of Buffalo. It seems like we are going to gather everyone to New York eventually.
Maddie and her newly acquired dog hed off to their motel followed by Colleen and Patrick. Colleen is tired so Patrick suggest she get a room and sleep and he will keep watch. As soon as she is gone he calls someone to activate a tracking device he put inside the truck that Maddie is driving. Maddie gets another text that says, “I’d like to know if you are safe.” Then one that says, “Do you ever regret not getting on that bus?” That refers to the season one finale when she was supposed to get on the bus with the POV and leave together.
Then her real phone rings and she answers it thinking it is Ezra. It’s Patrick who says, “Interesting, so you guys have been in touch this whole time?” They start talking about whether or anything was real in their relationship, but before they get too far, Colleen show up to bust up the conversation and he hangs up on Maddie. Colleen is pissed and says she is going home tomorrow. Maddie takes the dog and leaves. Patrick watches her movements on his phone.
It’s funeral time. Ezra had an odd meeting with his brother earlier where he was hallucinating about Maddie before his brother busted in and had some sort of a breakdown. Ezra gave his brother something to read at the funeral which is apparently being held at the grave site itself. That’s weird. Ezra is also hiding behind a tree while his brother reads the eulogy he gave him. When he finishes, Ezra goes to the car where Max and Sally are waiting. When he gets in The Doctor is on the phone for Ezra. He tells them that as of now, the TOV work for him. Max will take him to the cabin where they will await their instructions.
Maddie returns the dog to its owner and receives a reward. When she gets back into her truck she gets another text. It says, “I know you are getting these texts.” She finally replies asking who it is. The response says to meet her at Langmore Cabin and we can talk about old times. It’s signed “Ezra,” So my prediction is correct. Ezra arrives at the cabin and the TOV reunite with a big group hugs and sobbing from Ezra.
Next week it all comes together at the cabin in the woods. There are four episodes left.
This may be the dumbest question ever but why does Ezra work for the doctor?
Not dumb at all. I don’t think Ezra has a choice in the matter. The Doctor chases down anyone (Max, Sally, Maddie) who tries to defy him, and now he has his sites on Ezra, Jules and Richard.
This. He has no choice. None of them do. I suspect Maddie will be an ally.
I is interesting that Maddie seems to have real feelings for Ezra.
I don’t think Cy trained Maddie. When Max and Sally first saw Maddie working at the coffee shop, they were waiting for Cy to meet them but he was a no-show. I think he was trying to drop out of the con-game with The Doctor. So Max and Sally recruited Maddie in his place. I think that’s right, but my memory is questionable at best.
It’s close to right. But when Maddie walked in she said that he is the one that made her what she is now. He taught her the pick pocketing sort of cons. Clearly Cy left, but he was never far away. She obviously new him and essentially trained her to work for The Doctor.
Thanks!
I’m a little confused. I thought cy was same guy she was talking to at race track. The one that told her he was gay.
But my facial recognition may be as bad as yours tamara
Me too. I thought it was Cy, didn’t he say he was his brother?
At the horse track, he mentioned picking the dark horse every time. The gal cracked “they’re all dark when you got no instinct.”
How does the greatest con of all tie all these themes together in this show?
I’m trying to figure that out too radchick. There’s all these separate ‘teams’ (for lack of a better word) on this show.. each with their own agenda. There’s max/Sally, Patrick/Colleen, TOV.. maybe the biggest surprise will be that the team members turn on each other…?
I think I know but I don’t know. The only thing I know is that I’m hooked.
The Cy thing was driving me batty so I watched the scene again when Maddie and the puppy walk into Cy’s room. She’s talking out loud while he’s pretending to be asleep. She says it’s nice to meet him since he is the reason she got in on the con. I think she is saying that because he disappeared on the day that Max and Sally were in her coffee shop they decided to recruit her in his place. She thought he had managed to escape The Doctor and was free, but of course he’s not actually free. Correct me if I’m still trying to make sense of it and getting it wrong. ; /
You are not wrong! I thought the same thing about when Max and Sally met Maddie. That’s when Max said everyone has an expiration date. I love this show even though it makes me bat shit crazy!
Thank you Radchick! I keep questioning everything I think I know, but it’s fun, right?
I’m obsessed with this show! This was a great recap. I too find it interesting Maddie has real feelings for Ezra, whom I’m convinced is more to this than we originally thought.
I don’t think it’s Ezra who is sending the texts to Maddie. I have a sneaky suspicion it’s Shelley Cohen. I also don’t think that Arthur is dead. Max, Sally and Ezra left Arthur on the floor of the bathroom in the hotel room, then there was the closed casket. I love this show, makes my head spin but I love it.
Oh and it was definitely not Ezra sending the texts to Maddie. He’s busy trying to get in touch with Sophia.
Yes, the Arthur is not dead theory still holds since we didn’t see a body.
Do you think Lenny knew Jules was one of the TOV? At first, I thought it was a chance encounter. But now with the Doctor sending Ezra to the cabin, I think Lenny knew who she was. Right? She had to know?
So Maddie has 2 phones? One from Patrick and the one she called Max from? It does seem like Patrick still has feelings for her. But who does Maddie still have feelings for? If it’s Ezra, I bet Sophia shows up and Ezra chooses Sophia.
I think Patrick is going to save the day with Maddie’s help. He’ll follow her to the TOV at the cabin. Max, Sally and Ezra will show up. And chaos will ensue.
I’ll be reporting back after I study my notes and rewatch the episode again.
TT, we love that you’re the only one in the universe who’s covering this amazing show. You take all the time you want and need to get this posted.
Chance encounter? Oh, Radchick. Of course Lenny was there doing her job which was to find the TOV. She will be there when they all get together next week carrying out the Doctor’s plan just like Max and Sally.
” As she is telling Lenny this story, Poppy is telling it to Richard. As I am listening to this I am wondering what the point is. Then I remember Sally talking about Arthur stealing his brother’s patent. And Richard’s scenes where he was essentially stealing his salesman’s clients. Is it possible that the Doctor’s method of picking his targets has to do with profiting off the work of others?”
I need a refresher on Ezra season one. Did he do anything to profit off the work of others? I need to go back to the first recap.
That’s an interesting theory Tamara!!
It does seem as if the doctor, despite his threats, cons, etc has somewhat of a moral compass. I’m not exactly sure what else makes me think that.. maybe because Sally’s still alive, so is max…
Right now I cannot think of an instance where Ezra did anything to profit off the work of others..but does ezra’s involvement once again link to his father? Like you said his father stole his brothers patent. And ezra’s threat to prevent him from calling police had to do with exposing his fathers affair…. I just don’t know.
But I cannot wait to find out more.
Something caught my eye in the “previously seen” footage. It’s the scene where Richard and Jules bluff there way into a stuffy country club. Jules runs into a former classmate who knows she turned in her dead roommate’s artwork as her own. He yells at her “you should be ashamed of yourself.” Flash forward to her and Poppy sitting on the bathroom floor Poppy tells her, “What you did in the grand scheme of things is nothing. No one will find out. Because it’s fixed. That’s what power and influence does. It fixes things.”
And it dawned on me, Lenny Cohen is the ultimate fixer!
Which brings me to Jules and Lenny’s conversation at the Wheel Around Tavern. Jules orders “a beer, your choice” from the bartender. Lenny says she wouldn’t advise that. Jule asks why not? Lenny counters with “so many things in life our of our hands. If you can make a choice, make a choice!” Jules changes her mind and says “actually, i’d like a Moody stout please.” Lenny replies “Strong. Definitive. Felt better doesn’t it?” Jules agrees and say I suppose it did.
The next scene, it seems like Jules has moved over a bar stool closer to Lenny. Lenny tells her she was the runt of the family, a girl, 6 kids. I had to claim respect.” Jules tells her she’s awfully tall for a runt. And asks what does claiming respect mean? Lenny gives her one example of many by telling her about a mime in a park who poses as a statue and has a hat for tips. She tells of her brothers getting up in his face and steal his money. He still wouldn’t flinch. She said he was “stiff as a cliff.” How she bet her brothers a year’s worth of their allowance if she could get him to move without touching him. At the same time, both Jules and Lenny say she “took his hat.”
Jule says she’s the youngest in her family and has yet to claim respect. since Jules has no mimes in her neighborhood, Lenny suggests “swift, brutal violence can be effective sometimes.”
There’s more I want to say about the Lenny and Jules scenes.
I’m finding the dialogue between Jules and Lenny very telling. I’ll be back to finish up with my thought on the Lenny and Jules scene. It’s fascinating.
I think interesting that Jules and Ezra developed an emotional bond, almost sisterly/ brotherly. But not really Richard. Richard still seems stuck on the superficial… I cannot help but think he will end up screwing them somehow.
With so much crap going on with the geriatric abuser douchebag I’m surprised you had time to recap, but so happy you did. I didn’t know the last show is titled “See you soon, macaroon”. I’m so hoping for a Season 3. Are the numbers picking up?
I’m still not convinced Ezra’s dad is dead, but I don’t think his family knows because of the breakdowns of Ezra and his brother. Is the Doctor behind the ruse? I can’t think of anyone else.
I’m not sure Maddie knew Cy before. Wouldn’t she have known he’s gay? I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Cy.
I think it was a chance encounter with Lenny and Jules (unless they have the house bugged) but Lenny knew Jules was part of the TOV and took the opportunity to mess with her. I think Jules blames herself for her roommates death a lot more than stealing her work. I know Lenny is a psychopath, but I think she has a soft spot for Jules.
Poppy is a bitch. Poor Ritchie.
I too think it was Shelly who sent the phone to Maddie. And I think Maddie really loves Ezra. The last text signed “Faithfully Yours, Ezra” made her smile. Or she’s just a cold-hearted bitch and is trying to use him again.
When Ezra gets in the car with Max & Sally after the funeral he says “We gotta move her”. Was he talking about his mom?
Because I’m completely obsessed with this show I watch with closed captioning. When Maddie is coming out of the market there is a conversation on CC but no one on the screen is speaking. It’s about parking and chicken on special. But at the end there is “Did you text her”, “Yeah, she said she’s gonna meet us”, “Babe, let’s launch this today”. I can’t figure out if it means anything or if it’s just the CC people messing with us.
TT, thank you so much for recapping this show and giving us all a place to voice our opinions and confusion. On my part it’s definitely confusion.
AAL, watching with CC on is genius! I keep rewinding. Great idea.
I agree Jules and Ezra have a brother/sister vibe going on and I enjoy it.
TT kind of cleared it up that it’s not a chance encounter Jules meeting Lenny. I agree, it seems like Lenny has a soft spot for Jules. However, I don’t think it would stop her from killing Jules. But I also wonder if Lenny is recruiting Jules if the TOV now work for the doctor? As in welcome to the family.
The envelope the phone came in was from Houston and arrived at Maddie’s Mom’s house. Patrick sent it to her and was the one who texted asking if she’s safe. I didn’t catch the part where he put a tracking device on the phone but TT did.
I missed the part when Ezra got back in the car and “we got to move her (?)” was said. Good catch. I noticed Ezra was acting odd in the car driving to the cabin.
Ithinkiknow, I agree with you Richard’s going to bumble something up at the most inappropriate time.
I’m very interested in the conversation on the grocery store parking lot. Great detective work AAL!
So many things about this episode drive me craxy! But in the best possible way. So many angles. The new character Cy. What fresh hell is he going to bring. We really don’t know much about Ezra’s relationship with his brother?
And the preview for next week, wow.
The phone was likely sent with a tracking device when Patrick mailed it. HOWEVER he also put a tracking device in the TRUCK right before he called her on the phone so that when she tossed the phone, he could still track her. He was immediately tracking the truck on his phone when she took off. That is how he will end up at the Langmore cabin with everyone else next episode.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I still think Shelley sent the phone. Why would Patrick put the a tracking devise on her truck if he already had one her phone? Why did she even keep the phone? If I were on the run I would have tossed it.
I think she thought Ezra sent the phone and she kept it because she really loves him. Which is going to suck when Sophia shows up. I really, really love this show!
It’s interesting the Doctor runs his practice in Buffalo, NY and everyone is meeting up at the Langmore cabin in upstate New York. It should be an awesome episode coming up. Plus the season is winding down, so we may get closer to finding some good stuff out!
Yes!! Last season was filled with surprises.. almost every episode. Maybe this season biggest surprise saved for the end..?
Next week should be Good!!
I think Maddie likes Patrick, not Ezra. But a relationship with him will be problematic since he’s in law enforcement. I could possibly, though unlikely, see her have feelings for Ezra. But Sophia will win when it comes to Ezra’s heart.
I think the only way for Maddie to end up with Patrick is if she plays a key role in capturing the doctor. But with no doctor, would that mean the end of the show?
