After forty days and forty nights of rains of Biblical proportions, Atlanta is experiencing three straight days of sun. Holy Crap! I just looked to see when the next rain is coming and it’s not until FRIDAY. I am totally going to try to get out in every day to pull myself out of the damn hole! This could actually happen!
I can barely type this as I am on a break from gardening because my wrists are shaking from some kind of shoveling fatigue. Yesterday, I forced myself to go to Home Depot and spend enough money that I would not just let everything die today rather than getting outside. I even got up early to start planting. Unfortunately, the family of the dead guy next door had set up camp on the lawn and were filing a giant dumpster with the remains of the meth lab and surveillance room or whatever the hell is in there. So I got a few things done inside the house. I cleaned up a few drifts of dog hair, sort of not really ran the vacuum and bleached the ceiling fan again. With all the sunlight in the forecast I may be able to make this house habitable again.
I bought five tomato plants which is about two too many for my first outing because I will be buying more. I didn’t find the sun burst yellow cherries yet. I can’t remember what they are called. I bought a cheat plant with two tomatoes on it. It’s a Bush Goliath. It’s not my favorite varietal, but I am impatient and need some immediate gratification while I wait for my heirlooms to set fruit. I just realized I only bought one other red tomato, an early girl. I need a Roma or something. I bought a pink brandywine, and some sort of yellow golden and I think an orange Pear. I bought four/five kinds of pepper, I think I got yellow, red and green bells, but I might not all three. I bought a red hot chile and a Tabasco. I bought two containers of cilantro which will die. But I and going to try it anyway. I can’t keep parsley or basil alive either. My oregano is apparently perennial because it comes back every year.
My garden is so grown over it makes me wonder if I even planted last year. I did a lot of pruning and weeding and that wore me out so, so far I only have my cheat plant transplanted and staked. I better get back out there and get a bit more done. I hope to have it all done by tomorrow at the latest. I’ve been scrubbing out the giant clay pot that the cheat plant is in for weeks and filled it with new organic dirt. Isn’t all dirt organic?
I am going back out now and enjoying the gorgeous yellow irises that came up in my flower garden for the first time this year. They are really tall so I can see them out my dining room windows. They’ve been blooming for weeks and are just about done. The back yard was full of purple bloom of money plant but they are pretty much finished now.
So is anyone else out in their gardens this weekend? What are you planting? Let’s keep the comments light and airy and about gardening and spring cleaning please.
